2010 - Shared Harvest Foodbank
2010 Annual Report Serving Southwest Ohio for 28 years A letter from our director To all of our Amazing Supporters and Partners: I am of that age where I tend to reminisce - I have a life’s worth of stories that keep me company, make me smile and get me sentimental. Stories of accomplishment and failure, of excess and poverty... all contributing to the person I am today and I wouldn’t trade any of them. We all have such stories that we share with each other, more often than not around the dinner table with friends and family. Food brings out this social bonding like no other thing we share as human beings; it sets a safe common ground for conversations about the good things and bad things; problems and solutions; laughter and tears. Meals that we share with each other give us ‘permission’ to slow down to enjoy the food and each other. The dinner table is where memories are made during holidays with fancy feasts and just normal ‘every day’ days with fish sticks and macaroni and cheese. In the 28 years Shared Harvest has been battling hunger, we’ve collected thousands of stories. Each one a slice of a persons real life, stories of triumph and tragedy, of need and generosity, all heart warming or heart breaking. Over the next few pages of this annual report you will read some of the stories we collected during 2010, the personal accounts of random acts of kindness and courage in the face of overwhelming challenges. And 2010 was certainly full of challenges, with unemployment and foreclosure rates reaching thirty year highs and a continuing recession like none since the Great Depression. We have all been touched, in one way or another, by these hard times. The lines at our network of food pantries grew longer increasing by 11% and the amount of food we distributed grew larger, increasing by 12% over a record breaking 2009. The number of children needing our weekend BackPacks of food broke all records – from an average of 1,546 children needing food each week in 2009 to 2,114 children depending on those BackPacks each week in 2010. And our ability to meet those increases say something about your story. We were able to serve more families and children because of you. From the donor who buys extra canned goods when they are on sale till she fills a box to drop off, to Marsh joining our retail pick up program with Kroger, Walmart, Whole Foods and Target that collectively donated over 1.1 million pounds of food. From the elderly couple who faithfully send a $5 bill in the mail each month to the Intermec Foundation that contributes $10,000 each quarter. So as you all sit down around your dinner table to enjoy a meal and tell each other stories of your day, know that because of you, families all over southwestern Ohio have the same opportunity to enjoy each other around a dinner they would not otherwise have. Working toward a hunger free world, Tina Osso, Executive Director The numbers tell the story Our Mission: To find, rescue and distribute food to people living in poverty through an efficient network, uniting the public and private sectors; To raise awareness of the impact of poverty. It probably won’t surprise you to find Shared Harvest Foodbank’s 2010 Annual Report sounds very much like our annual reports for 2008 and 2009. The number of people turning to our network of food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters continues to grow. What may surprise you is that the people on the front lines in the battle against hunger are reporting more and more middle class families turning to them for help. While it is a struggle to keep up with this incresed need for assistance, the good news in 2010 was that Shared Harvest’s partners - corporations, foundations, churches, schools, civic groups and individuals - continued to provide generous support to make that happen. While it is impossible to mention every act of generosity we saw last year, we’ve selected a few examples - large and small - to show how our friends and neighbors pitched in to help. We have tried our best to list every business, organization and individuals who supported our mission with food and funds. Many thanks to all of you! AN OVERVIEW OF 2010 Shared Harvest Foodbank distributed Shared Harvest’s Steve Cox moves large skids of a record 16.5 million pounds of food in donated food in our warehouse. 2010, an increase of 1.8 million pounds over 2009 levels. Of that total, a record 5.8 million pounds of food went to our partner charities in Butler, Darke, Miami, Preble and Warren Counties while the rest went to our partner foodbanks who rely on us to distribute U.S.D.A. products to 34 additional counties. Our pantry network provided groceries to nearly 131,000 families representing almost 372,000 individuals, and our direct service programs that assist children, seniors and families offered help to increased numbers of people. EXAMPLES OF THOSE WHO GAVE US A HAND IN 2010 Chuck Howard and John Cooper wanted to do something to help Shared Harvest Foodbank. So the owners of Ohio Lunch in downtown Hamilton came up with plans for a Santa’s Workshop project one Saturday in December. Their idea is a good example of how many small businesses, church, civic or school groups attempt an innovative project to help feed people who are hungry. The Santa Project gave kids a chance to have breakfast with Santa and get their pictures taken with him, as well as doing craft activities they could take home. While John says expenses ran higher than expected for this first time venture, the owners decided to still make a $250 contribution to the foodbank. John hopes to have more time to expand the project in 2011. Many other businesses like Grainger, Intermec, CHACO Credit Union, AurGroup, Kroger, Northrup Grumman and Pampered Chef continued their long-time support of Shared Harvest with generous contributions of more than $120,000 in 2010. Ohio Lunch was one of many organizations that stepped up with a unique holiday campaign in 2010. Students in the Hamilton City School District took on a six-week challenge in 2010 to see how much food they could donate to Shared Harvest Foodbank. When the drive ended in mid-February, students had collected 60,899 for the ‘Fill That Bus’ campaign. Zellene Miller, career development coordinator at Hamilton High and one of the organizers of the event, said one key to this success was incorporating Hamilton High students played a key role in helping the subject of poverty into the curriculum to pack and deliver more than 60,000 pounds of food at all grade levels. She saw high school from the district’s ‘Fill That Bus’ campaign. students and others carry the message to churches and other community organizations. “They felt it was important, and anytime you get children who have passion to be part of something like this, they also show compassion for helping those in poverty,” Miller said. While many people were surprised by the amount of food that was collected, Miller was not among them. “We have a generous community,” she noted. “People were talking constantly about this event, and any time you get that many people talking, something exciting will happen.” Walmart food drive response The manager of the Fairfield Township Walmart wanted his store to take a leadership role when the home office challenged its stores to conduct food drives for their local foodbank during the Thanksgiving season. So Ben Kincer passed that challenge along to his cashiers, giving them about ten food items which cost a $1 or less and asking them to see how many of those items they could get customers to purchase and donate to Shared Harvest. “We had some cashiers who sold three or four hundred items in a day, and we ended up donating over 3,000 pounds of food to the foodbank,” Kincer said. “Of course, the people who received the largest benefit were the people in need who were able to give their families a well-balanced meal over the holidays, so it was a win-win situation for everyone.” NALC AND OTHER FOOD DRIVES For fifteen years, members of Branches 43 and 426 of the National Association of Letter Carriers have been helping Shared Harvest through the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive. The local NALC campaign established a new record in 2010, collecting 77,917 pounds of food in Butler County. Local TV stations also did their part to assist Shared Harvest and two other Letter Carriers have been lifting a heavy load for foodbanks. Six Cincinnati stations Shared Harvest since 1996, participating in the national “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive in May. WCPO, WLWT, WKRC, WCET, WSTR and WXIX - joined forces for The CincyTVTogether campaign in March, raising $6,424 for Shared Harvest along with a donation of 1,549 pounds of food. In addition, our annual Holiday Aid campaign brought together many business, civic, church and school organizations that operated food drives during the Thanksgiving to Christmas holiday season, collecting 59,123 pounds of food. Retail Pick Up provides lifeline The Retail Pick-Up Program established new standards for grocery stores that work with Shared Harvest Foodbank to save food that usually was discarded. The project rescues perishable foods that weren’t purchased by the “sell-by” date, making them available to the foodbank’s network partners. While Kroger initiated the project in 2005, WalMart, Whole Foods and Target joined the program too, and the fall of 2010 saw the addition of Marsh stores. More than 1.1 million pounds of food were rescued in 2010, more than double the amount salvaged the previous year. KROGER Keith Turner has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Kroger Retail Pick-Up program, first as manager of the Monroe store and now at the Liberty-Fairfield store. “It’s great for us because it prevents food from being thrown in the landfill, but it also helps us to reach out to the community and help people who are struggling,” Turner said. He also has received positive feedback from Kroger associates. “It’s important to people like our meat cutters, who put a lot of work in to preparing cuts of meat. They’re glad the items can help people, rather than being thrown out.” 2010 food distribution Local In-kind donations 957,287 Kroger Retail Pick-up Project 151,453 Walmart Retail Project 959, 819 Marsh Retail Project 10,176 Back Pack Program 222,603 USDA Commodities 1,633,001 USDA to Partner Foodbanks 10,686,668 Commodity Supplemental Food 465,888 Ohio Food Commodities 439,352 Ohio Agricultural Clearance Program 847,403 Foodbank Market Program 144,174 Total distributed 16,519,824 WALMART In its first full year of participation, Walmart stores in our five county region came close to donating a million pounds of food to local pantries. “I think it’s awesome”, said Walmart’s Fairfield Township store manager Ben Kincer. “We’re able to donate meat, produce and dairy products, and all of the items are much needed by our pantries.” Shared Harvest driver Rick Devine loads frozen meat products donated by Marsh Supermarkets. MARSH STORES OUR NEWEST RETAIL PICK-UP PARTNER Shared Harvest welcomed Indiana-based Marsh Supermarkets to the Retail Pick-Up program in the final few months of 2010. Seven stores in the foodbank’s service area are already participating. “Marsh is proud to partner with Shared Harvest’s mission of feeding families in Butler, Darke, Miami and Warren Counties, “ said Connie Gardner, Senior Director, Community Relations for Marsh Supermarkets. “Through this exceptional program, Marsh is able to provide meat, deli, bakery and produce items to familes in need. This collaborative effort is vital to those struggling to make ends meet, and we encourage our retailers to join in this fight against hunger.” The view from our pantries Grace Ressurection Pantry People served by our partner Many people mistakenly believe that food pantries in 2010: poverty primarily is confined to urban Families 130,907 areas, but the director of a pantry in the most rural county in Shared Harvest’s Adults 60+ 43,225 service area can tell you that’s not true. She also sees 2-3 homeless families each week, some living in barns or similar structures and seeking blankets from the pantry to help them stay warm. Baltes said Shared Harvest Foodbank has kept her pantry going, and the Kroger Retail Pick-up Program also has been a lifesaver. “Sometimes we get a couple of hundred pounds of hamburger from Kroger, and by getting Hamburger Helper from Shared Harvest, we can help a family make two to three meals,” she said. Franklin Area Community Services Franklin Area Community ServiceS On the surface, a 4.5% increase in clients served in 2010 may not sound that bad, given the current economy. But Franklin Area Community Services Director Terry Coyle says that follows five years in a row with 10% increases, and many of those people are Zella Ballard (left) gets a helping hand from one of the friendly volunteers at Franklin Area Community Services still turning to her agency for help. after getting a basket filled with groceries. “On the positive side, our doors stayed open every day, we never had to turn anybody away, and we didn’t have to reduce the content of our food baskets,” Coyle said. “But as the need continues to grow, our food budget has gone through the roof.” Coyle predicts a 15% increase in the pantry’s 2011 food budget, the same as 2010. She’s grateful she can get large amounts of food from Shared Harvest and that the Retail Pick-up Program generates large amounts of food as well. “We received well over 100,000 pounds of food from Walmart, and we’ve also had generous support from Kroger, Dorothy Lane Market and Gordon Foods,” she added. BackPack serves more children For Michelle Couch, Shared Harvest’s 2010 BackPack Program BackPack Program helps to ensure that her four elementary-age sons have something Average children enrolled: 2,114 to eat on weekends. They are among an average of 2,100 students who benefit each week from the program, which provides nutritious snacks and meals to students identified as being chronically hungry in area elementary schools. “They get a lot of variety, and they change things up so kids don’t get the same thing all the time,” said Michelle Couch. “I think it’s refreshing when they discover something new, because it makes them wonder what they’ll find the next time.” Michelle is in school - just like her kids. She’s completing an Associate Degree in Fine Arts at Miami University this spring and will follow that with a criminology degree in spring 2012 and a Bachelor’s degree in 2013! Eligible seniors receive a monthly box of food and a block of cheese. While many CSFP clients drive to a pick-up location for their once-a-month supply of supplemental groceries, some seniors rely on volunteers to deliver. “I think the people really need it, and with the economy the way it is right now, it makes it especially important to them,” said Bob Hudson, who has delivered CSFP to Belle Towers Complex in Hamilton for the past 5 years. Jerry Horn delivers to seniors at Mark Petty Towers in Hamilton. “They look forward to it, especially the big block of cheese. Staff helps people with SNAP Shared Harvest’s three outreach 2010 SNAP Outreach workers were able to increase the number of applications they filed in 2010 Applications filed: for people who might be eligible for 643 the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance SNAP benefits accrued: Program - formerly Food Stamps. $2,122,857 As they visit local food pantries and other locations to help people seek benefits, Gloria Bateman, Lisa McIntosh and Kathy Dart come back with stories about the people they met. Here are a few: Lisa McIntosh: Joe was definitely down on his luck. He had been laid off before Christmas and was not given any severance pay. Unfortunately, his unemployment took about three weeks to be processed. He was in danger of being evicted, he had a utility disconnect, and he had no medical coverage. He was doing everything that he could to find employment, but he wasn’t having much luck. Throughout the course of our initial conversation, he had mentioned how his employer had gradually taken away overtime, medical benefits, and even pay. He thought that the employer had taken the proper precautions in the workplace to prevent layoffs. Little did he know that the economic situation there was much worse than it appeared. I took Joe’s application. When a man’s eyes water up with tears, it always touches my heart. I wished that there was something more that I could do for him because I felt so sorry for him and his situation. After getting assistance for a couple of months, Joe’s story ended on a happy note. He was able to land a new job - one that acutally paid more with less travel. Gloria Bateman: One couple I met recently was a family of three with one on the way. She walked into her job on a Monday and was laid off within an hour. Her husband is still working with a good job. They have a one-year-old with another baby on the way in June. They do have a relative who works at one of the Hamilton pantries who called me to see if I could help them. I drove over to their house and met the mother. We all sat around the kitchen table while I set up to do the SNAP application with them. When I was almost done I told her she and the baby would qualify for Medicaid also. It’s nice to see a smile on the face of a person when you are able to help. Shared Harvest’s Gloria Bateman helps a client determine whether she qualifies for SNAP (formerly Food Stamps) or other assisance programs. Kathy Dart: Lately, a lot of the people I’ve been seeing are faced with losing their unemployment benefits. I did an application for a woman whose benefits were about to expire, leaving her with no income. She had been able to get by on her check with the help of a food pantry but needed to explore other services, like the SNAP program. I could see in her body language and hear in her voice that she was really worried about what to do. I explained that the Benefit Bank has other services to help her and that her application would include medical and financial help if she was eligible. Now, these are all things that I would tell anyone who needed these services, but this lady was so thankful that I almost felt guilty for having an income. It still sometimes hits me that my job is all about people who don’t have what I have - a job, a home, insurance and food. M e e t O u r P a r t n e r A g e n c i e s ... Strong support for JNFR Edwina Blackwell Clark is pleased to see readers of the Hamilton Journal News have contributed more than $100,000 to Shared Harvest Foodbank in the seven years the newspaper has offered its JournalNews Food Relief project. The 2010 campaign - which began in mid November and ran through the end of December - resulted in 714 individuals contributing $23,585. That’s the second highest total in the history of the JNFR campaign, surpassed only by the $28,822 donated by the readers of the Hamilton JournalNews in 2009. “One of the reasons I wanted to do the JournalNews Food Relief Campaign is because the people of Hamilton and Butler County have been very good to the newspaper and part of our mission must be community service,” said Blackwell Clark, publisher of the Hamilton JournalNews and Cox Media Group Ohio’s other Northern Cincinnati Newspapers. “I truly believe if we can report on problems in the community, we should use our power to help solve some of these problems.” In addition, the Hamilton Community Foundation contributed $10,000, bringing the grand total for the campaign to $33,585. It was the second year in a row the foundation made a generous contribution to the project. Many thanks to Cox Ohio, the JournalNews staff and the many readers who showed their support.
