MP calls for ban on MMA New legislation could mean closed doors for NSS By qualified staff and to close nail bars if their activities constitute a health risk - a power London boroughs already have under the law.” Claire Matthewman claire@BeautyServe.net A Labour MP has called for the regulation of nail bars and the banning of MMA monomers, following a recent complaint from one of her constituents. Milton Keynes South West MP, Phyllis Starkey was alerted to the problem of some nail bars using MMA by a reputable salon owner who saw a number of customers seeking advice after their nails had been damaged by the use of this substance at other establishments in the area. Methyl Methacrylate, known as MMA, is a chemical substance that is typically used to make resins and plastics. It was originally used in the nail industry as a liquid monomer, until a discovery in the 1970s found it could cause harm to the nail bed, as well as having a number of other side effects, including irritation to the eyes, skin, nose and throat and could even potentially cause damage to the nervous system. Unlike methyl methacrylate monomer, methyl methacrylate polymers were not associated with these injuries. Following the discovery MMA was banned by the FDA in the US, however the UK has been slow to follow due to a lack of complaints this side of the pond. In fact, the only area of the UK that has current legislation in place to guard against disreputable salons is the London Boroughs. Under the London Local Authorities Act 1991, persons administering ‘special treatments’, which includes manicures, must be registered with their local authority in order to continue offering these services. If any premises offering such services within the London boroughs are found to be operating without a licence, the Local Authority has the right to prosecute the person concerned with the conduct or the management of the premises. On November 15th 2007, Dr Starkey asked the Leader of the Commons, Harriet Harman, for a debate in Parliament to discuss the public health impact of using Nail bars. She said: “This issue is of great importance to women in my constituency and throughout the country, and it would be helpful to have a debate about its public health aspects as soon as possible.” Star Nails Spangles Attitude Ms Harman agreed, adding: “There has indeed been a proliferation of nail bars, and I think that if there are public health implications we need to be confident that they are being looked into.” Dr Starkey has since been in touch with the Secretary of State for Health, Alan Johnson, and proposes to introduce a short piece of legislation in the House of Commons on the 12th March 2008 to permit all local authorities to regulate nail bars in their area. She explains: “This would allow councils to insist on Solglo Bella Mani As the publishers of the industry’s only Code of Practice for Nail Services, Habia’s Deputy Chief Executive Andrew Darby commented: “Habia is supportive of all nail technicians having a nationally recognised nail qualification at the level of the services being provided. We would prefer all Local Authorities to support implementation of the Habia Nail Code of Practice, which was put together by the industry, rather than come up with their own criteria. We would be concerned at overly bureaucratic regulation but are generally supportive of moves to raise the standards of nail technicians and nail businesses”. Should Dr Starkey’s bill be successful, it may take anything from 12 months to three years in order to implement the changes. If you have any information or experiences that may help to support Dr Starkey’s bill, then please feel free to contact her at phyllis.starkey@gmail.com or email us at thenailfile@BeautyServe.net. United Beauty shows ‘attitude’ at the Clothes Show United Beauty took centre stage with their first ever appearance at The Clothes Show Live, in December 2007. The main focus of the stand was to promote two of the company’s key brands: Attitude® Professional Nail Lacquer and Solglo® Professional Spray Tanning, whilst generating interest in the nail extension training courses. With an estimated 190,000, predominantly female, frenzied shoppers visiting the show, the United Beauty stand caused quite a stir. From the moment the NEC doors opened, stand PK114 saw a constant flow of curious shoppers snapping up their United Beauty bargains. The nail desk had a steadfast queue of ladies waiting to treat their weary bag-laden hands to the perfect manicure treat whilst the Solglo® tanning area was non-stop tan after tan. By Claire Matthewman claire@BeautyServe.net Timeless, stylish and classically elegant, the French Manicure is one fashion statement that everyone can wear - after all what other look can take you smoothly from day job to dance floor? But whether your clients prefer the traditional pink and whites, or go all out for gothic black and white, one thing is for certain - this nail trend is here to stay. Nothing says ‘ooh-la-la’ quicker than a French Manicure, but can the French really take the credit for this staple design of the Nail Industry? In short, nobody knows the style’s true origins, there is however much speculation that Max Factor created the style for the Fashionistas in Paris, who were looking for a clean yet polished look to adorn their perfectly moisturised hands. What is known is that the term ‘Original French Manicure’ was first trademarked in 1978 by Orly founder, Jeff Pink. “The concept was conceived while working with a Hollywood producer. The goal was to come up with a nail colour to complement movie stars’ wardrobes on set. While in Paris at the fashion shows, Jeff noticed that the runway models used white pencil under the tips of their nails to achieve a clean, natural look. Thus the ‘Original French Manicure’ was born and has since become the most sophisticated look in nail fashion,” says Lauren Bearman, PR and Marketing Assistant for Grafton International. designs, as each decade passes another generation of nail techs leave their mark of inspiration for others to follow. Some of today’s designs include the Chevron French, Reverse French, French Wave and Diagonal French (see main image). “There are various techniques available for updating the French look. Backward is the new forward at least when it comes to nails and the Reverse French Manicure is an edgier version of the old classic,” says Nic Coomber of Beauty Concepts International. “Dita Von Teese and many top designers and fashion photographers have been requesting this Topsy Turvy look for decades, as it symbolises the cosmopolitan, influential woman. Simply paint the French on the halfmoon part of the nail taking this down to the sidewall. Use the polish corrector pen to tidy up any excess on your clients’ fingers,” adds Nic. Alternatively, you can update a French Manicure by altering the shades to include any colour of the client’s choice. “For every dark colour there’s a complementary light colour, which can be mixed and matched,” comments Susan Gerrard, Managing Director of The Natural Nail Company. “For a ‘cappuccino-style’ French Manicure use Expresso (a rich coffee) on the tip and nutmeg (a pale brown) for the over and undercoat. For a more jazzy look, we suggest using a glitter polish for the tip colour, or simply dot a small amount in the middle of one nail to give a jewelled effect,” suggests Susan. Style by design “The traditional French Manicure is a style of polishing the nails wherein white is applied to the tips of the fingernails, and the rest of the nails are given a pink or painted with sheer polish that is coloured either pale pink or light beige,” explains Rene Lipsitz, of Bio Sculpture. Nails courtesy of Grafton International. Image courtesy of istock. Since its conception, the French Manicure has been the subject of several makeovers. From colours to The Totally French Collection by Nubar at Palms Extra carries an extensive collection of high gloss, fast drying and long lasting lacquers. 9 10 T he Nail File Wi n t e r 2 0 0 8 Polished to perfection Despite carrying the ‘effortless’ tag, perfecting a French Manicure takes skill and time to practice - a good eye and a steady hand can mean the difference between a perfectly polished pinkie or a wobbly smile line. Claire Lebrun, Beauty Business Development Manager for Aston & Fincher, recommends: “Why not get rid of the traditional brush altogether? Instead, take an eyeliner-sized brush and paint on a fine line of the white in a single stroke, following the white of the nail as closely as possible. “Then, when this polish is still wet, clean the brush in nail polish remover before running it along the near edge of this white tip. This will leave you with perfectly even, accurate white tips, ready to paint over the whole nail in a sheer, pale pink polish.” Susan Gerrard adds: “Make sure you seal the nail tip by painting along the free edge. This will not only protect the nail itself, but will also prolong the life of the Manicure. Make sure each coat is touch-dry before you apply the next one.” The Totally French Collection by Nubar at Palms Extra carries an extensive collection of High gloss, Fast Drying and Long Lasting lacquers to create the perfect French Manicure. The Collection offers a variety of colours with different tones and finishes to complement all skin types. From the range of Formaldehyde-, Tolueneand Phthalate (DBP)-free products, choose between the Foundation Base Coat, fortified with Calcium, and the Porcelain Natural Base Coat, which has been enhanced for strength and durability. Both Nubar Base Coats prevent staining and provide excellent polish retention results. Use the Nubar White Tip to achieve the desired smile line. The ergonomically designed bottles are an easy shape to hold, together with easy grip lid and high quality brush for an accurate and simple application. Having allowed time for the smile line to dry, select one of the colours from the Totally French Collection which includes beige, peach, pink and rose tones with a variety of finishes - matt, pearl, shimmer or gloss. For a frosted pink finish, Palms Extra recommends Nubar’s Pink Bustier and Blushing Bride. If your client is looking for a lighter, more natural shade of pink, try Pink Sachet or Pink Cami. For peachier tones, opt for Mon Cheri, Gold Aura or Nudité and for a more natural finish you won’t go wrong with Lady Lace or NuNu. While Jessica’s French Twist Collection is very popular, you can also make up your own kit from the wide selection of Jessica French Manicure shades. For those who opt for the traditional French Manicure there are over 15 sheer colours and choice of three white tip colours. For those who want a funkier French Manicure, there is a choice of over 160 colours, which can be mixed and matched. After applying basecoat, paint one coat of Jessica’s Beautiful (a translucent pink) over the entire nail. Then paint the tip or ‘smile line’ with White Cap (a soft white). Follow this with an application of Diamonds Dazzle Topcoat before painting another coat of Beautiful. Then, apply a coat of Brilliance for a high gloss shine and Quick Dry. This gives a natural look while keeping the nail protected. Top tips! 1 Always clean the neck of the polish bottle after use to give the closed bottle a tight seal and so prolonging the life of your polish. 2 Apply thin layers building them up to achieve the desired colour, thick coats only mean a clumpy and uneven finish. 3 Don’t over brush the polish as this makes it streak and can cause air bubbles in the finished result. 4 Never shake your polish bottle as this adds bubbles to the polish which are then transferred onto the nail plate, roll it between your hands instead. ‘Squeaking’ the nail plate using Protect Nail plate sanitiser and a lint free nail wipe. Polish like a true professional Whilst applying nail lacquer may look easy, achieving a perfect and professional finish is much harder than it looks. Here are a few top United Beauty tips on how to create beautifully polished nails. Squeaky clean It is essential that the nail plate is clean from any dust as any residue left on the nail will mean that the polish will not adhere and it will give an uneven and imperfect finish. This can be done by ‘squeaking’ the nail plate, to do this simply apply a nail plate sanitiser and dehydrator to a lint free nail wipe and firmly wipe over the nail plate. Back to base Apply a base coat and allow to dry. Using a base coat is very important as it prevents staining of the natural nail and creates a more effective surface for the lacquer to glide over and bond to. 1, 2, 3 Load your polish brush with enough product to cover the nail plate in three strokes (one down the middle and one either side) without having to go back in to the polish bottle to add more as this will cause streaking of the polish. Apply your first coat of polish making sure that it is a thin even layer and is not touching any soft tissue surrounding the nail plate. If you miss a small amount of the nail plate do not try to fill it in, if you do you will create a thicker amount of polish in that area and it could look uneven, your second coat of polish will cover it. Always use a base coat to prevent staining and create a better surface for the nail lacquer to glide over and bond it. Make sure you seal the free edge of the nail plate as this will promote the life of the finished polish and gives a more professional finish. Allow a few minutes and then apply the second layer of polish as above. Allow the polish a few moments to ‘settle’ then apply a coat of top coat. Use an orange wood stick or a cotton bud dipped in nail varnish remover to clean any areas where the polish has touched the surrounding soft tissue. Lightly spritz the nails with a drying product such as Star Nails polish dry. Do not spray too close as it may mark the surface of the polish and will cause bubbles to appear under the polish. Warning! Polish does not wear well on clients with thin, flexible nail plates as the movement of the nail plate causes the polish to separate from the nail plate surface and it then chips off so if the client requires a coloured polish go for a paler, iridescent colour. If a client’s nails are in a very bad condition use a nail strengthener as a base coat instead. telephone: 0845 331 2347 quoting: www.BeautyServe.com The Nail File Winter 2008 15 16 T he Nail File Wi n t e r 2 0 0 8 www.BeautyServe.com NAIL COMPETITION UK nail tech 2008 The Midlands’ only professional nail competition returns this spring. UK Nail Tech 2008 takes place as part of BeautyUK at the NEC, Birmingham on Sunday 13th and Monday 14th April. This year the event is sponsored by Kinetics Professional Nail Systems, along with Guild News and The Nail File. Once again, there are ten categories for you to enter, and with four competition sessions you can enter up to five different categories. Sponsored by GuildNews The categories are as follows: Sunday AM Top Techs - 21⁄2 hours Salon Nail Challenge Top Tech Tip & Overlay Gel Top Tech Tip & Overlay Wrap Top Tech Tip & Overlay Liquid & Powder First introduced in 2007, the Top Tech categories are designed for technicians who can competently complete a set of competition nails in two hours using their chosen system or discipline. If you’re not comfortable with producing ‘competition standard’ nails but want to showcase your salon work alongside your peers, then Salon Nail Challenge is for you. These categories allow you to compete against the nail crème de la crème, and even if you’ve never entered a professional competition before, the Newcomers category gives you the chance to test your skills under competition conditions. The judges are looking for the perfect set of salon nails. The beauty of this category is that you can use a gel finisher on acrylics, plus oil, base coats, top coats and polish dryers anything goes that you would use in a salon to achieve your required look. Sunday PM Salon Nail Challenge Monday AM Top Top Top Top Tech Tech Tech Tech Sculpt Newcomers - any system Nail Art Photographic Monday PM Salon Nail Art Challenge Student Nail Challenge Take your skills to the next level and prove it on the circuit. Photographic The theme for this year’s Photographic category is ‘Wedding Belles’. Judges will be looking for best ‘cover shot’ which encapsulates this theme - so let your imagination run wild! The winning image will be featured in Guild News and The Nail File. Salon Nail Art Challenge Permanent Nail Art using coloured acrylics, gels and glitters etc. You can use skills of encapsulation, 3D or others but your design must be deemed as commercially wearable. Student Nail Art Challenge - 21⁄2 hours Just like the Salon challenge, the judges are looking for the student who can produce the perfect set of salon nails. Pack your bag the night before and check again in the morning to ensure you have not forgotten anything. You do not have the time or need the stress of running around on the day finding products from the stands. Make a list and keep that for every time you enter. Ensure you read the rules and set up your desk accordingly, as many people lose marks on floor judging. Denise Wright Competition Director, UK Nail Tech & Scottish Nail Technician of the Year I would always recommend you pre-register to guarantee your place - make sure you know the registration deadlines. Pre-registered or not, you need to arrive on time as there will be a lot of people arriving all at once so get there early! Book your parking spaces well in advance as there are many exhibitors and visitors to the events and parking spaces are usually always limited. Or make a weekend of it and stay close by. Think about your model. Look for someone that has long straight fingers and long nail beds. Start manicuring the cuticles and hands at least two weeks before the competition. Forget about ‘salon nails’, the nails you produce for a competition must be seductive and pleasing to the eye and not in the least bit practical! Each nail must be exactly identical in shape and length. One little trick to ensure that the length of the nails are consistent is to hold the hands up palms facing you and make sure that the visible tips of the nail are all equal. When creating the smile line - whether you choose to give a deep smile line or a straight smile line - they must be identical. Adele Smith United Beauty Trainer and competition expert If it’s your first time in the competition arena it’s worth getting as much feedback as possible from other competitors. Most people will happily share their knowledge; my view is that a good competition needs as many entrants as possible (there’s no fun coming first out of one!). So I would always help and encourage anyone. OPI Nail Technician, who has been successful at both the Scottish Nail Technician of the Year and UK Nail Top Tech competitions amongst others One final tip is to use pre-tailored tips (if the competition rules allow) as you can save on tip preparation and buy yourself more time. And always remember to keep calm and not get worked up, competitions are a fun and worthwhile experience! As a competitor I spend a lot of time preparing. The day before I make a list and check it about a hundred times before I pack my box for the final time. It’s the simple things like kit list that I was so shocked at: amongst other things, a bin (metal lid with liner), also lamps and an extension cable. Think about wrapping up in layers; take a hot water bottle and flask of hot water to fill it. Be prepared, you never know what you’re getting until you’re there and then it’s too late. I always pack more than I need just in case - you don’t want to be left short in the middle of the competition. For the Wrap category I recommend testing the fabric first to make sure it has good clarity. Choose a good tip with a high arch and make sure it fits your model’s nails perfectly. Pick a high quality resin with a nice viscosity so it soaks into the fabric well; I recommend Backscatchers Stikr as I find it the best resin to work with. Use it with the Extreme Glaze Dryer for an expertly smooth and even finish. I take spare product too. What if something leaks, breaks or jams...these are all things I’ve learnt the hard way. Finding a good, patient model is one of the hardest things. You are under enough pressure. A good model will have long slender fingers, attractive hands, and long nail beds. Think this way, if you were giving her hands and nails marks out of 10, what they would be? If the mark is low, don’t consider them. My favourite model scrutinises the nail as I do them, watches the time, and reminds me to pinch. She`d make a great judge in fact. Always pre register. A competition I was recently at in Dublin almost had to turn away competitors who hadn’t registered as the turn out was so high. Remember to book accommodation and travel arrangements in advance and confirm them. Have a look for a competition workshop, know your faults and work on them. So, faults perfected, all products packed, model sorted, remember to read the rules! The organisers want you to enter so of course they’ll explain the rules. Look at the floor rules; this is normally 10 extra points for things like: Client Record card (filled in), bin and liner, light, sanitisation, tidy desk, uniform, goggles, mask etc. Finally, try and enjoy it. It is nerve wracking, you will wonder why you are putting yourself through it, but the experience will make you a better nail tech and the judge’s feedback (you get your score sheet back afterwards) is invaluable. Go for it. You won’t regret it. Prepare your model. Not just by simply pre-manicuring the nails but also mentally. Explain what she is to expect, it can be a long day and there is normally a lot of waiting around, especially when waiting for the finished nails to be judged. When choosing a model, make sure that she has good healthy hands and nails with no cuts or scratches. Also look out for long nail beds with a good pink colour. Make sure that you practice your polishing skills as sometimes in preparation this can be overlooked, yet it is something that will be judged on. Again if you’re a novice try and get an inside view, see if someone will use you for a model so you can see what it’s all about before competing, also consider entering a salon nail comp first. Here the judges are looking for a nail more like the ones you do everyday, rather than the typical long, very thin competition nail. Belinda Price Preparation is the key and your kit must be perfect, checking that you have everything that you need several times just to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. Make sure you have spares of each product you’re going to use and always keep spare brushes just in case! I also recommend using a fresh buffer on each nail to achieve an optimum glass-like shine. Elise Scholes Finally analyse your previous score sheets, make notes and practice your weaker points! Coloured acrylics and gels take your fancy but not sure which system to train in? Tara Oldham, Senior Trainer at Lena White Ltd, gives her advice on choosing between the two systems.... L & P (Acrylic) “This is the most commonly applied nail enhancement due to the fact that it is strong, durable and can be used to create shape on flat, problem nails. It is especially good for nail biters due to its superior adhesion qualities (although this may vary in different brands) and is ideal for sculpting or forming a free edge without using a tip. Acrylic is the ideal enhancement to train with if you only want to do one system as the versatility of it allows you to treat most clients that walk through your door. It is great for tip and overlay, sculpting and even natural nail overlays for strengthening. The downside is it is probably the hardest system to master and requires practice, patience and dedication to perfect. A good training course that is spread out over a period of time to allow you to practice is essential, as is choosing a good brand of acrylic to work with.” Gel “Compared to the other types of enhancement systems available today, gel is a relative newcomer. It is still an acrylate-based product just like acrylic and resin systems, but is in a pre-mixed format. The application of gels is really very dependent on the brand as some require a brush on technique and others use a gentler gliding technique. Gel is not always suitable for all types of clients, for example, some gels can peel off oily nail plates. What’s more, gel may not be suitable for extending the nails of extreme nail biters, for whom the strength of acrylic may be more effective. Any clients with flat or ski jump shape nails will need to have an extension constructed to give their nail the correct arched shape and gel can be difficult to build with. Gel application is much simpler that acrylic and is a good enhancement system to progress to from natural nail care. Enhancement application involves a thorough knowledge and understanding of the natural nail as the risk of causing damage to the natural nail in the application of enhancements is greater than the risks involved in natural nail manicure procedures. Like any acrylic course, make sure that your gel course allows you enough time to build up your skills slowly and learn the different techniques at a pace that enables you to master them better.” Contact telephone numbers: Bio Sculpture Gel 0845 331 2347 Calgel 0845 230 1087 EzFlow 0845 330 0840 ibd 01827 280 080 LCN 0871 222 8070 Lena White Ltd 01923 240 010 NSI Palms Extra 0500 131 009 0800 252 172 The Edge Nail and Beauty Ltd 01256 840 840 United Beauty Products 01536 463 350 Always quote The Nail File when calling. www.BeautyServe.com The Nail File Winter 2008 ● Excellent Value ● No Minimum Order ● Fast Delivery ● Professional & Retail Lines Contact details Email: info@palmsextra.com Tel: 01733 232350 Website: www.palmsextra.com %($87,)8/&2/2856BBBBB &$/*(/12721/<2))(567+('85$%,/,7<675(1*7+ $1')/(;,%,/,7<<28·5(/22.,1*)25,1$*(/ ,7·6$/62$9$,/$%/(,1$1(3,&5$1*( 2)29(5$//85,1*6+$'(6 &$/*(/ )25025(,1)250$7,2125725(48(67$&$/*(/,1)23$&. &$//862125(0$,/,1)2#&$/*(/&28.4827,1*71) 7+,1)/(;,%/('85$%/( % ( $ 8 7 , ) 8 / 27 28 T he Nail F ile Wi n t e r 2 0 0 8 www.BeautyServe.com Visit this year’s Beauty UK. • • • • Meet and do business with the top suppliers in Skincare, Nails and Equipment Walk away with exclusive Spring promotions Discover new ideas for your business and career Take advantage of fantastic 'show-only' offers Increase your knowledge and boost your profits with a visit! Purex joins the Elite NSI UK Educators and Distributors went back to school recently for an intensive, hands on two day training event at the NSI Training Academy in Manchester. Loughborough College’s new ‘Elite Beauty Academy’ is now fully operational, and to promote health and safety, their trainee Nail Techs are protected by sleek Purex Nail Stations. Mel Cornish, Elite Professional’s Beauty and Complementary Therapist, said: “At Elite Professional we only provide healthy options for nail enhancements, and the Purex Nail Station you receive a treatment on is the latest technology. Its unique extraction method draws away the dust and fumes given off by some nail products to protect the health of our students.” Training was conducted by Rise’ Carter, National Director of Sales and Education for NSI USA; Mandy Rainford-Jones, Head of Training for NSI UK and competitor in the world-wide nail competition circuit; and Denise Wright, 13 times UK competition winner and international judge. The objective for the training was to continue to raise the level of education and technical skills, gain a fuller understanding of NSI products and how to compete in the marketplace. It was also a chance to learn new skills, brush up on old ones and achieve higher goals. Fantastic new facilities have enabled Elite to offer a range of hair, beauty, complementary therapy and Nail Bar services, complemented by experienced staff. Treatments are offered in line with the part of the curriculum currently being taught, and offers clients reduced price taster sessions, whilst giving students the opportunity to practise their treatments and customer care skills.
