The Cape Ann Chamber, established in 1922, is dedicated to the economic well-being of the region, with 900 member businesses in Essex, Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Rockport and throughout the North Shore. The mission of the Chamber is “to serve as the principal voice of business while working to enhance both the economic environment and the quality of life for the citizens of Cape Ann.” This mission provides critical guidance to me, the entire Chamber Board of Directors and the Chamber staff, to ensure that every day we stay focused by providing maximum value to our members and the entire Cape Ann community. A total of 3,000 applications are needed before the Chamber is completely relieved of all financial obligations. Each application will need an associated check for $40 made out to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). There is also a one time $20 plate transfer fee at the time of plate pick-up, but we do not need these checks now. The Chamber will follow-up with you when we approach the 1,500 applications. We will request your payment at that time and then submit them as a batch to the RMV. There is no deadline to collect the 1,500 applications. However, the sooner we have them, the sooner we all will have our new plates on road! Frequently Asked Questions Is the $40 a one time payment? No. The $40 is paid every two years coinciding with your registration renewal along with the standard renewal fee of $50. So the total is $90 every two years. Where do I pick-up my plates? At the closest RMV office (Danvers for Cape Ann). Can I reserve a custom license plate number? Yes. A three or four digit number may be reserved with a minimum donation of $100 per requested number, with a separate check payable to the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce. These are available on a first come, first served basis. There are certain numbers that are being held for auction that are unavailable at this time for reservation; these numbers are: 1 to 100; 1623, 1630, 1642, 1645, 1683, 1755, 1819, 1840, 1873, (our local communities incorporation dates); and 1929, 1930, 1944, and 1966 (four local zip codes). Note also that “0”s are not allowed before numbers, e.g., 007 is not allowed. Can I have letters on my plate? No. Letters are not allowed until all the 4 digit numbers, through 9999, are used. How will the license plate proceeds be distributed back to Cape Ann? The Chamber is forming an affiliated non-profit organization, comprised of representatives from each of the four Cape Ann communities, to manage the plate proceeds. This new non-profit will determine how the proceeds are re-distributed back to the four Cape Ann communities.
