garnish your loved ones!
IN SEPTEMBER WE CELEBRATED MY FATHER’S 70TH BIRTHDAY. (I’M GETTING OLD!!)
The month was also packed to the brim with sports, back to school activities and settling into
the post-summer groove. Needless to say, it’s a busy time here. I know you can relate!
When my dad’s big day was less than a week away, I had yet to put together a gift. I wasn’t at a
total loss, though. I knew what I wanted to do. As the days approached my head was swimming
with ideas. Folding laundry would bring one bit of an idea; loading the dishwasher another.
And then walking the aisles of my craft store brought the final inspiration and sealed the deal.
You see, my dad was going to be in the South on his special day with his brother and some
great friends. But the rest of our family would not be there to celebrate. So why not bring us
to him. Heaven forbid I pop a picture in a frame and send it on its merry way. I mean, I had a
brainwave! And when one hits (and let’s be honest, it ain’t that often!) you’ve got to go with it.
It was going to be a hectic couple of days to get my project done in time to overnight ship but
I guess that’s the way it goes when you wait until the last minute. I thought about abandoning
the project and just sending a picture frame but come on, where’s the fun in that?
WHERE AM I GOING WITH ALL THIS YOU ASK AND WHAT IN THE WORLD DOES IT
HAVE TO DO WITH OUR GARNISH WORKBOOK? Let me tell you a little something about
that birthday gift I created. Yes, it took a little time. Yes, the dust bunnies nibbled a couple of
extra days on my floors. Yes, I put the power of my dishwasher detergent to test from neglected
dishes. But here’s the thing. He loved the surprise gift. Everyone at the party thought it was
great fun having the rest of his family there. And I had a deliriously beyond giddy time putting
it all together. It was far from perfect and let’s just say you could definitely tell it was homemade.
I was laughing at myself for laughing at my creation. I know, I know, what can I say?
I live on the corner of giddy and geek!
OK. So Picasso
I’m not. But a gift
from the heart touches
hearts, every time!
And who doesn’t
love heads on sticks?
AND THIS IS MY POINT. THE HOLIDAYS DON’T NEED TO BE PERFECT. THEY JUST NEED
TO BE JOYFUL. Don’t approach the season with a Pinterest obsession and resulting massive
to-do list (hello... major buzz-kill!). Instead, try to focus on savoring all the little moments that
remind you just what makes this life so wonderful. That’s my goal this year!
And that’s the idea behind your Garnish Workbook. Little ideas with big impact. And of course
Garnish has everything you need to get it done with ease and grace. From taking home
leftovers in style to treating everyone on your nice list, our Workbook will help you breeze
through the holiday season...and beyond. Because you know we think the everyday
is just as deserving of a little Garnish as the holidays!
HAVE FUN WITH IT. Enjoy the simplicity of Garnish. Enjoy the beauty of giving. And take it
from one DIY-er to another... it’s okay if you don’t have the exact same font found in one of
our inspiration shots. It’s okay if your strong suit is not label making. If you’re not a baker, you
can still Garnish. Trust me, whatever you create is going to be its own world of fantastic and
because you enjoyed putting together, it’s going to make an even better gift.
I have the pleasure of working with Michelle at A Girl Named Fred and stylist / photographer
Catherine Choquette to put this Workbook together. If left to my own devices, my ideas might be
a little more along the lines of heads on sticks. But you know what? Heads on sticks are awesome.
And your ideas will be, too. When adding a little Garnish, there is no perfect...just perfectly you.
All the best to you and yours this holiday season, and into 2013. We’ll see you right back here
in the Spring with the next issue of Garnish!

IF YOUR SEASONAL CALENDAR IS ANYTHING LIKE OURS, IT’S PACKED TO THE
RAFTERS WITH SOCIAL EVENTS! And if your mother is anything like ours (and ours is
wonderful!), she taught you never to arrive at someone else’s party empty handed. Here you’ll
find some simple ideas for putting together a Garnished hostess gift that’s sure to make anyone
feel pampered. And in this busy season, let’s face it... a little pampering goes a long way!

Help your hostess indulge
her inner chocoholic with
this simply delicious (but
deliciously simple) treat!
NO MATTER HOW OFTEN WE SAY THAT WE BELIEVE THE BEST GARNISHES ARE THE
SIMPLEST, EASIEST, MOST LICKETY-SPLIT GARNISHES... NO ONE EVER BELIEVES US.
Well, we say the proof is in the pudding... or the chocolate lava cake, as the case may be. You
can put this Garnish together in no time flat. So whip up a few and it can be your go-to gift.
And your hostess will lick the spoon clean!

AAAHHH.... THE HOLIDAYS. FOR MANY OF US, ALL IT TAKES IS THE MENTION OF
“FAMIILY THANKSGIVING” AND IN OUR MIND’S EYE WE SEE... THE KIDS’ TABLE!
Remember the kids’ table? When we were growing up, we were relegated to our grandparents’
coffee table, and got to indulge in mini glasses of ginger ale (oh, the luxury!). But that was
about the extent of the kids’ table festivities. Today, we think the experience can benefit from
a little Garnish. After all, you’re only young once!

GUESTS TO TAKE HOME. She didn’t put them in Tupperware. She didn’t use plastic baggies.
She used deli containers. We were delighted, and a business was born! That “this or that”
philosophy is what drives Garnish. It only takes a moment to turn the ordinary (OK, our
scalloped potatoes are a little more than ordinary... they’re delicious!) into the extraordinary.

Chocolate is the universal
language of “you’re awesome”
(at least we think so!)
WE OFTEN HEAR THINGS LIKE “OH, I’D LOVE TO GARNISH, BUT I DON’T BAKE.”
HERE’S A LITTLE SECRET. WE DON’T EITHER. We are the queens of store-bought. (Just
keepin’ it real!) So don’t fret if your chocolates aren’t the hand-dipped confections you saw
on Pinterest. Stock up on Lindors and pack them up with a little Garnish flair. Your guests
