FIRST ANNUAL EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS HIGH SCHOOL
HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
There were 35 qualifiers for the first Eastern Massachusetts
Tournament, held in Boston from March 4 to March 28, 1968 at Boston
Arena and Boston Garden, with preliminaries held at Ridge Arena in
Braintree on March 4.
One of these top teams from the 12 Eastern
Massachusetts leagues would earn the right to meet the Central-Western
champion in the revised State Championship format.
The pre-tourney favorite was Needham, which had tied for the
Bay State League championship.
The three other top-seeded teams were
Brookline, Melrose, and Norwood. Arlington was not considered as a
favorite in many quarters because of two factors, the f i r s t being the
loss of many seniors from the 1967 state championship squad including
Bobby Havern, who had set the state scoring record in his last year.
The
other factor was that Arlington's hold on the GBI League title had been

Then, in the semi-finals, the Spy Ponders defeated
Needham, 1-0, in a hard-fought game which saw Arlington score on its
only shot of the f i r s t period.
When Norwood defeated Hingham by a simi-
lar 1-0 score in the other semi-final game it set the stage for a rematch
of last year 1 s state finalists.
Arlington had prevailed at that time, 2-1,
to take the 1967 title.
The annual sportsmanship awards were made to the following players
(one for each league division):
Berry Division - Mark Bousquet of Classical
Fay Division - Bill Nyrnan of Commerce
Wright Division- Danny Thomas of East Longmeadow
The amazing Arlington string of 48
consecutive league games without a loss was ended by Medford, 2 - 1 ,
Both teams played strong games in the title contest, but with
only 2 - 1 / 2 minutes of regulation time left Arlington led by 3-1.
Tom
Deveaux had gotten them off to a flying start with two quick goals in the
first five minutes of play.
Norwood scored when a Bob Begley shot was
deflected in off an Arlington stick, and it was 2-1 at the end of the f i r s t
period.
Bill Corkery, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding
LI
Player, made it 3 - 1 in the second period, and from there the score
remained until the final minutes of regulation play.
At 7:32 of the third period the Norwood goalie, Neil Higgins,
was pulled in favor of a sixth skater.
High-
scoring Dennis Hebner of Norwood was credited with the goal, but he
earned his next one as he scored on a screened shot at 9:46 to tie the
This forced the game into sudden-death.
It appeared that Norwood had turned the tide of play to its
advantage, and when Bernie Quinlan of Arlington went out for hooking in
the first minute of overtime the Spy Ponders' hopes were dim.
Once
again, however, Bill Corkery saved the day for his team by blasting in a
30-footer ten seconds l a t e r , and the game and championship went to
Arlington.
For Norwood it was a heartbreaking loss, but its tournament
p e r f o r m a n c e proved, once again, that the Mustangs are certainly a major
power of Massachusetts high school hockey.
Arlington's showing, of course, must be one of the greatest in
tournament history, and is a fine tribute to the coaching of Eddie Burns.

Hudson did not capitalize with the man advantage,
however, and the issue was still undecided.
Finally, Sullivan went out for
