One fringe benefit of my job is getting to write a letter such as this one while watching the islands go by on the ferry. As we travel and meet with people, I’m reminded of how much Four Winds means to so many. Last week in the Bay Area, I met with several members of a three-generation Four Winds family. Yesterday in New York City, I witnessed two Romany Winds cabin-mates reconnect after 30 years. Later in the evening, we all sang Seven Golden Daffodils together. The connections that Four Winds fosters run deep. They sustain people through good times and bad. The formative experiences that young people have had at Camp for nearly 90 years now, and will continue to have every summer, are some of the most significant in forming the adults they become. In this annual report, we recognize those members of our community who have made a financial commitment to keeping Four Winds strong. We are so grateful to all of you who continue to include Camp in your philanthropic plans. Most traditional, multi-generational, long-term summer camps are for-profit family businesses, as Four Winds was when Ruth Brown founded it. We are the beneficiaries of Miss Ruth’s foresight and generosity in donating Camp to the independent 501(c)(3) organization that exists today. That unique positioning as a nonprofit, along with all the generosity that the Four Winds community has shown to Camp over the years, has allowed us to maintain Camp’s unique character, continue such incredible programs as big boat sailing and our commitment to financial aid, and keep tuition lower than comparable camps. We appreciate that generosity, both past and future. We hope to see many of you on Orcas Island this summer. For those of you who can’t make it, please take comfort in the fact that far off on an island, children are having the time of their lives, just as they have for nearly 90 years, and will forever. All the best, Paul Sheridan, Executive Director the purpose of four winds is to create a community where young people can become independent and discover themselves in a natural setting. As we give shape to that purpose, we are inspired by Ruth A. Brown’s concepts of community, creativity and simplicity. As we approach our 90th anniversary in 2017, I’m pleased to report that Four Winds is in a remarkable state of health as a community and as an organization. Many of you know that this year, for the first time in modern memory, the 80% of Camp that is reserved for full tuition campers filled on the day that enrollment opened for new campers, and waitlists are long. As Board Chair, that data point excites me as an indicator of Camp’s vitality. Of course, it also raises the question, “where does Four Winds go from here?” As usual, we want to maintain everything that our community has come to love about Camp, but we also want to make sure we secure that character for decades to come. This inflection point is a wonderful time to consider that topic. Among Camp’s many wonderful achievements this year, a particular point of pride is that the Board of Trustees decided to invest $100,000 of Camp’s cash resources at the Seattle Foundation in our Board Designated Fund to bolster our long-term financial resources and to take a small, but meaningful step towards sustaining Camp’s relevance and character for the long term. In addition, thanks to your generosity, we had a notable year in the following areas: n total donations received: $331,063 n total number of separate donations: 556 Both numbers are improvements from the previous year, and prove again that one thing is certain: Four Winds’ strength and uniqueness over the decades has been tied to the unflagging loyalty of our Camp community. Thank you for the incredibly generous support that is outlined in this document, and thank you in advance for your continued support moving forward. If you have thoughts or concerns about the direction Four Winds takes in the future, I am always open to hearing them as is our Executive Director, Paul Sheridan. Best wishes, Henri Broekmate 3 donations Four Winds * Westward Ho appreciates the support received from the following individuals, corporations, & foundations.
