•Against the $, sterling opened the month at 1.55 and has increased to 1.58
as at 9th September.
•Against the €, sterling opened the month at 1.16 and has increased to 1.18
as at 9th September.
•Against the €, Energy prices have risen following the political tension and
speculation that surrounds the potential Western intervention in Syria,
consequently driving the price of crude oil upwards. Brent crude oil on
ICE London increased 8% and light sweet crude oil on NYMEX US +4%.
Road fuel prices rose in line with crude oil; prices were higher for petrol
(+8%) and diesel (+7%) in the EU.
Fats and Oil
Soybean oil prices have increased due to fears that dry weather conditions
in the US may affect and reduce production. The global soybean production
forecast for 2013/14 decreased by 4.17m tonnes, in comparison to last month’s
overall figure of 281.7m tonnes, yet an increase of 5% YOY. Prices rose in
Rotterdam by 6%. Strong demand from China and Europe drove palm oil prices
10% higher in Malaysia and +10% in Rotterdam.
Rapeseed oil prices rose in Rotterdam (+4%), influenced by the higher soybean
oil and palm oil prices; prices were also higher for palm kernel oil in Rotterdam
(+9%). Other findings revealed that costs for lampante olive oil increased in
Spain by 13%, and extra virgin olive oil prices remained unchanged in Italy.
Wheat
Wheat prices in Europe continued to fall as they are weighed down by higher
forecasts for this season’s crop. The global wheat production forecast for
2013/14 increased by 7.6m tonnes, resulting in a total of 705.4m tonnes, this is
driven by higher EU and Black Sea production. Milling wheat prices were lower
in France and Germany, but remained unchanged on LIFFE Paris.
Dried Fruit
On 2nd September 2013, the first new crop of sultanas were sold at a price
of TL 4.750/kg, an increase of over 30% on last season pricing. This price is
expected to continue to rise as growers are looking to achieve TL 5.00/kg
going forward. As growers deliver to factories, they are offering fruit on a
consignment basis, initially taking some money to cover their costs but then
waiting for higher prices to balance – this is direct result of exceptionally poor
yields from the harvest. Previous estimations revealed that the crop was going
to be 30% lower than last year; however it is now being exposed as 40–45%,
therefore a crop of around 190,000mt is expected.
Given these difficult market conditions, stringent enforcement of contract
terms is predicted as exporters will be keen to close all their old contracts at
low levels. There is no doubt that it will be a very difficult season with the
production of Turkish Sultanas.

There are currently no raisins offered from Turkey and with USA prices now
significantly cheaper, most buyers will be looking to cover their requirements
using Californian product. Bids for USA raisins are approximately $200.00 per mt
cheaper than Turkish Sultanas. In addition to this, Greek currants are also
trading on a much lower level than last season.

Exchange Rates
Improved farming weather conditions across most of the EU have lifted milk
production to a normal level although cumulative production remains down
YOY, with the price of EU butter increasing by 3%. SMP prices in the EU have
risen approximately 5%, while WMP prices rose 3%. The EU cheese market
indicated a slight upward trend with further increases of 3%.

The Baking
Industry Awards
The Baking Industry Awards, organised by British Baker magazine, took place on
September 11th at the Hilton Park Lane in London.
The awards are now in their 26th year,
and with up to 800 key industry executives
attending, the Baking Industry Awards have
grown to be the most prestigious event in the
baking industry calendar. This year’s glittering
ceremony was hosted by TV celebrity and
former Hear’ Say band member Mylene Klass,
while the event itself had an oriental theme.
The main purpose of the event is to honour
those who have reached the pinnacle of
their career; finalists listed from the 10
categories attended the event. Those who
were selected as finalists have shown that,
via their products, skills and service, they
really are the best-of-the-best and are shining
examples of the talent and passion that is on
show in bakeries up and down the country.
They are judged by an independent panel of
experts who have spent hours travelling
the country and asking lots of questions.
The quality of the judging and the fact
that all entries are judged by their peers are
what make these awards so highly regarded.

were nominated for awards and we had our
fingers crossed for all of them; and we are
therefore proud to announce the winner
of the Celebration Cake Business of the
Year category was one of our customers
