TCS Insurance Toastmasters is the beacon light
guiding budding speakers in troubled waters and
makes them master speakers to reach greater
heights. This has been showing speakers in spot
light fame when standing in a crowd.

We may rise and fall in our journey but would never fail to stand against it.
Move along the flow, you are taken to nowhere but
move against the hurdles and there you stand as the
conqueror. The conqueror of adversity. Toastmasters have made us stand strong against the odd tides

President Address
With an exuberant excomm on-board, we
have successfully organized our third anniversary
celebrations with a bang at the start of the year.
Three years down, forever to go, kick started with
special meetings of ACB Marathon, CC1 Marathon, nerve-racking club contest and interesting sessions with innovative themes every week. I would
love to sincerely thank each and every member of
the club for their dedication and determination
showing in towards their toastmaster journey.
We are not so far for bagging the prestigious Golden Gavel Plus award and it wouldn’t be possible
without your continuous support and commitment
for all these days. Special thanks to TM Pavithra
Manivannan for completing her ACS journey. The
club has grabbed the “Talk Up Toastmasters” award
for this term as well, which brings an immense responsibility to get the best out of each new member
by transforming them to better communicators and
great front-runners.

are in the shoes of the beginner who strives to learn
new things and improvising new techniques to

Dear Insurance Toastmasters,
It has been a fabulous year so far. Getting to the top is hard but staying on top consistently time and again is more harder. Your club has been doing that regularly
and you are well on course not only to DCP 10/10 but also to capture the Golden
Gavel this time too. I would like to take this moment to thank all the officers,
members and guests who have played a part in it. I am sure there would have been
lots of challenges that you would have faced on the way and times where you had
to go against the tide to keep the boat sailing. Under the able guidance of awesome
leaders you might have also successfully overcome it.

Interview with Karthikeyan B– ISC & TT 2015- Club Contest Chair
There are some people who sets an example in whatever they do. There are some people who lead by example
in whichever way they choose. And there are some people who set an example even when they are leading by
example.TM Karthikeyan Boopathy, an endless optimist and boundless perfectionist has the rare distinction
of being in this third category of people.
TM Karthikeyan Boopathy, the immediate past president of TITMAS, who has been with the club in the
thick and thin in the last 18 months is rightly credited for transforming the club to next level. He has yet
again delivered another first of its kind of achievement in the form of the best ever club contest so far.
The learning process could be hardest at times, especially if it is organizing a speech contest, but the fruits of
learning out of that experience can be sweetest and ever-lasting. Editorial team brings to you the keys learning’s so that similar success can be replicated in future contests. The Man behind the best club contest ever
for TITMAS shares his learning and experiences being the contest chairman.
1) Club contest this year was a roaring success.
What according to you was the most defining attribute that paved the way for this success ?
The success of a club's speech contest is judged by a
number of parameters like Members participation
as contestants or role players, PR activities, Members and Guest attendance, Quality of speeches,
Variety of speech topics and healthy competition. I
believe, this contest ticked most of the boxes but
the most defining attribute of this success is the
members involvement and quality of speeches. A
record 9 contestants signed up and almost all contestant were at their best on that day and the result
paid way for 4 different members to experience area
level contest.

2) The ISC and TT contest this year had a mix bag
of contestants right from veterans to newbies. As a
contest chair , how did you help them stay motivated and give their best on stage?
3)This contest season you not only donned the hat
of contest chair but also mentor and motivator.
What really drove u?
I always believe that there is more to Toastmasters
than meets the eye. The moment you start believing
in the program, you will start gaining more out of it.
Having had the opportunity to learn so much from
previous 2 contest seasons as a contestant and a role
player, I wanted to make sure that this year's contest
touches as many members as possible and touches
them deep!. So we, the contest team shortlisted all
eligible members and reached out to them to understand their plans for the contest. Whoever was available and showed even slightest interest, we pushed
them to sign up!. Rest of the things were driven by
their self interest, encouragement from excomm,
support from fellow experienced contestant.
Not everyone needed motivation from outside but
yes, having been in toastmasters for close to 2 years,
it seems I did learn something about motivating or
rather asking the right questions at right time!. Being in a corporate club, we often end up going
through the motion and settle for an ordinary effort. So all that was needed is, to help contestant
understand that "Lets not get our tight work schedule, deliverables, client visits, cricket world cup to
be the reason for giving an ordinary performance,
lets look beyond these and make this contest a
memorable learning experience by giving the best".

4) You were a part of several contests at our club
and beyond. How special was this one to you ?

Organizing a speech contest even at a club level is
not an easy task. It takes significant amount of time
and patience to pull it off successfully. In our contest week, 3 more contest were scheduled so we had
to arrange role players all from our club. Also, couple of members had to complete CC6 in short time,
PA announcement was not approved so had to try
our hands in different means for promotion of the
club contest. Despite all the odds tremendous support from the members helped us sail against the
tide and come on top.
It is very special and memorable for many reasons.
Our club has come a long way since last year's ISC.
Members activity was at a low during last year ISC
and the contest didn't show our club's full potential
but then we had an amazing run at humorous
speech contest season where members stepped up n
tried their best. It bound us together and took the
team spirit to new level. And that momentum
helped new members to get in and give their best in
this contest. The fact that we had a record number
of contestants in both ISC and TT and run the
show with all our own members makes it more special.
7) What were your key learning's from the previous contest chairs?? Also, what would be your message to the future contest chairs??
5) Tell us about your team. What were their
unique traits that really "WOWED" you?
Plenty of learning's:
1. Every member would want to test their public
speaking skills. But some may need a mentor or the
contest chair to help them take the first step.
"Team work is dream work". This contest proved it
once again. Starting from my co-chair, SAAs, TAG
teams everyone showed the spirit. But one unique
trait that really wowed me was the energy showed by
each contestants to attend mocks, help each other
during mocks, take time to give feedbacks, motivate
each other in whatsapp groups etc. My sincere
thanks to each and every role player and member
who contributed in someway. Special thanks to the
ever-dependable chief judge TM Aravindhan
Kuttalam and our area governor TM Ranganathan.
2. Every contestant should be effectively reminded
of why they want to contest. If they understand the
purpose, they will put their best effort.
Suggestions:
1.Plan early. Do it in style. Sent the benchmark for
other clubs
2. Contest is a mega PR activity for any club. Make
sure the poster are pasted and flyer is broadcasted at
least a week before

Contests always gives you a nerve-wrecking, nailbiting, jaw-dropping and a heart thumping moments. Those who embrace these moments bravely
know how exponentially they grow all the nuances
of public speaking skills and so did I.

Speech Contest has been my favorite platform as it
offers great learning in shortest span of time and
also it gives a chance to assess where one stands.
However, this speech contest has thought me some
important lessons and multiplied my affinity towards toastmasters. Although, we are contesting in
the speech contest I have received phenomenal support not just from role-players and other members
but also from other contestants ,which I believe is
an alien culture outside toastmasters. It sounds funny and strange but it is true that me and my fellow
contestants practiced our speeches together in the
same room and in fact we gave our speech demos to
other contestants and helped each other providing
feedback. What I really liked is that we wished other contestants to win as much as we wished our
speeches to win. That mutual harmony and selfless
attitude is a trademark of toastmasters but this is
the first time I experienced it to the maximum possible extent.
Winning first runner up in TT contest and contesting in area level contest offered me interesting
learning on impromptu speaking and I would say
that this speech contest was journey of learning and
introspection for me. Although am still a novice, I
learnt how to quickly get to crux of TT topic only
because of the regular mocks organized by the excomm and other supportive members.
Finally I would like to thanks Club contest chair

who has organized the contest so well. In my two
years of toastmaster’s journey, I would say this is the
When I heard the word ”International Speech
Contest” I had mixed feelings. I was tensed, excited
as well as worried. I was tensed and worried as I feel
that I am still a newbie and was hesitant to participate in the speech contest. I felt like participating in
the contest is only for the veteran toastmasters and
orators. It might be due to the inspirational and
motivational speeches I had come across in toastmasters, I decided to give a try. At the moment of
the speech I was not bothered about the result and
just concentrated on my speech and delivered it.
And to my surprise I was the second runner up in
the table topics. That was really wonderful, exciting
and surprising as well. The person who was hesitant
to participate in the competition bagged the second runner
up position. On a whole my

As the club contest winner TM Nivedita Rani said
the biggest enemy of you is yourself. My contest
journey was all about learning to deal my biggest
enemy - ME, daring to try new things, sharpening
my decision making skills and attempting to believe
in myself. I might have not won the Area contest
but definitely I won over my fear of failure and my
reluctance to move out of my comfort zone. This
contest experience was a fulfilling one that made me
promise myself to contest in the next season, to
keep trying new things, keep learning and keep
growing.

Being a toastmaster for more than 2 years and having witnessed many contests at various levels, this
contest is close to my heart. All these years, I have
taken part in the contest either as a role player or
cheering audience but never as a speech contestant.
To me participating in this contest gave similar experience as delivering my Ice breaker speech going
against the tide and fighting against all my reluctance, hesitation and self-doubt. The much needed
push, motivation and encouragement by our contest chair TM Karthikeyan Boopathy and the Excomm members gave me all the reasons and confidence to try things that I have never done before.

true fortitude of a man. Each time an incident occurs wherein a woman is assaulted and killed, there
will be a riot of blame game – The public will be
blamed for its perverse state of mind, the police department will be blamed for not stepping up the
security, the government will be blamed for not controlling the crime rate, the victim will be blamed for
going out alone late in the night, you name it and
every department will come under the axe and will
be viciously shredded to pieces. Every time this happens, the post incident progress taken by every department to nip the bud at the beginning will always be astounding. The good Samaritans from
public, the police and the government, every stakeholder will give their inputs to ensure that the safety
and integrity of women in their locale are well
guarded. But still we do not see an improvement.
The integrity and safety of women in our country is
still uncertain. With this insecurity looming large in
front of us, it is time we introspect upon the most
important stakeholders – US! Many of them out
there might help us to ensure our safety. But above
all this is an important point to be considered. It is
called as the “WE” factor.
Another day has passed.. We are untouched and
alive !!!
Aatmika is a fiercely independent person. A thorough software professional with well defined career
and personal goals neatly compartmentalized into
that meticulously organized brain of hers. She believes in equality like many of us. But she ensures
that she gets back home before 10 P.M. She takes
only the company cab or asks her spouse to pick her
up from work. Every time she has to leave late,
Aatmika will be wary of any stranger and her instincts will be ever ready to apply the SING (Solar
Plexus-Instep-Nose-Groin) technique she learnt during her self-defense classes.
Shanthi’s regular work is to deliver milk packets
from door to door in a particular area. Her duty
starts at 4 A.M in the morning. She ensures that
while on duty, she removes the little jewelry she usually wears and also removes the imitation jewelry.
Every time she leaves her home for the day, she will
pack a little amount of chili powder with her for
safety.
Lakshmi is a home maker. She has to stay alone at
home for a good part of the day. Her husband and
kids will be back home only by 5 P.M. Till then she
has to man the fort. She ensures that her double
lock is safe in place, her grill door is locked with a
study Godrej seven levers and the pepper spray is
within reachable distance. She never opens the door
for any stranger and every time the door bell rings,
she s gripped with fear and caution.
We should be extremely careful and cautious. We
should ensure that we are safely tucked inside the
warmth of our home. We should ensure that we do
not venture out alone late into the night. I know
this particular comment will draw rampant responses from many of my fellow womenfolk out there.
I’m sure you will be demanding that I withdraw the
statement because you feel your freedom is curbed
and that the right to equality does not hold good
any longer. I’m not asking you to forego your
rights. I’m not asking you to succumb to slavery or
become dependent. Women are supposed to be
independent and we have grown leaps and bounds
in achieving this. All I’m asking is for you to understand that there is a thin line of difference between
protection and peril. When the society you are residing in has an element of evil attached to it, the
right to saunter out all alone in the night, early
morning, lonely stretches, opening the door to
strangers, carrying cash or jewel and going alone
without company, anything and everything that endangers or exposes you to threat should be restrained. We should take every step within our au-

an article stating some woman somewhere has contributed something for the betterment of the society, my heart sings with pride. It feels like one of our
own has gone to the zenith. Every time I read that a
baby girl/girl/woman has been sexually assaulted
and killed brutally, my heart just shatters and I
think for a moment – Had this incident not happened would that person have contributed something magnificent to the society? Probably yes.
It always hurts to know that there are people out
there who think taking a woman by force marks the

thority to ensure that we live to see the light and
sleep to get up the next day.
faceless woman? Do we not take a moment to call
up our dear ones to warn them? Do we not get flustered if our loved ones do not pick up the call? All
these are reminders of how spiteful the society is.
All these are reminders of how close we are to menace, how intimidated we are with every passing day.
Every day we wake up with an agenda, with
thoughts for a wonderful day and future ahead. But
not everyone wakes up the next day to turn those
thoughts into reality. What might be an ordinary
day for many of us with bright promises ahead
might be the last day for some woman. She might
not wake up the next day. Even as the world celebrates a new beginning every day, a life might be
snuffed out brutally and the family might be
plunged into gloom. Why is the society sinking into such atrocities? Why is it stooping so low as to
rob women of their integrity and life? At what cost?
At whose cost? To all gentlemen out there, please
understand it is at the cost of your womenfolk, your
girl babies and your princess. To all ladies out there
please understand, till the society cleanses itself of
all contamination, we need to maintain constant
vigilance. We need to understand even as we are
reading this article someone somewhere might be
struggling with phantoms of losing their integrity.
We just celebrated women’s day. A day to celebrate
womanhood and salute all the beautiful women
who contributed in making us what we are today. It
is also a day to take time and revisit that dull ache,
that throbbing remembrance of the insecurities we
have been exposed to, of the mayhem every one of
our kind has been through. We can only grieve for
the souls of our sisters we lost. But, we can ensure
that we do not lose any more of our kind to such
inhuman behavior. That rests in the hands of the
men for they should treat us with reverence and the
hands of us women for we should be vigilant. Till
we reach a point where we can vouch for our safety
and integrity, we can only go back to the solace of
our home and offer a silent prayer to god – Thank
god this day has passed and we are still alive. Still
untouched.
There are times when we let down our guard. We
tend to walk down a poorly lit lane listening to music or lost in thoughts. We tend to get inside a vehicle with stranger. We tend to stop by and give directions to some stranger oblivious of what might
be in store for us the next second. We tend to believe that the route we take every day to and fro
from our home or work is secure. All these times we
harbor this one thought which make us elude the
reality. “Nothing will happen to me. It cannot be
me”. Ladies, it is time to wake up from our slumber.
It is time to act, time to start taking the defensive.
Time to realize that the world out there is not a safe
haven.
Ensure that you always carry a can of pepper spray
with you. Remember to use it in time of need instead of panicking. Be alert of your surroundings.
At all points, ensure that there is people movement
in the streets you are taking. Attend basic self defense classes and get trained to protect yourself.
Take time to meditate every day. It will help you to
stay alert. Do not be on call or listen to music while
walking on lonely stretches. It will act as a distraction and finally your loss will be the prowler’s gain.
Understand that when the society is tilting towards
such low and malevolent activities, we do not have
the rights to clutch our rights of equality. Ladies, we
need to be independent, stand up on our own and
hold on to ourselves. Agreed and point taken. We
do not need chivalrous knights in shining armor.
We are our own guardian angel. We have been oppressed enough by chauvinists. Yes, we deserve
brownie points for breaking the shackles which has
bounded us for so many centuries. But we also have
to understand we have not still reached a point
where we can shed all our inhibition and be satiated
about the society we reside in. The society still has
a long way to go in becoming civilized. We need
not think of dark alleys to become clammy. All we
have to do is remember the numerous incidents
where our fellow womenfolk’s integrity has been
tattered to pieces. Do we still not break into sweat
when we read about the doom of some nameless,

stand like a pillar behind every successful woman,
to a mother, a wife, a girlfriend, a lover, a businesswoman, a daughter, a best friend, to a thought on
how we (both men and women) in unison can raise
against the tide to fight for being treated equally
not differently. Through this article I would like to
bring out a snippet I read on Women Empowerment!!

young women.
Be authentic:
The strongest way to set an example and to be a
mentor is to be your authentic self.
In a time where we see women making strides in
business, education, sports, career and leadership,
yet they lag behind their male counterparts. Why??
Recent research by an American Business Women's
Association put forward the fact that- Women's empowerment starts with how women treat other
women. So bringing in the feeling of sisterhood is
important.
Get involved:
Be part of something bigger than yourself. There are
many professional and volunteer organizations that
are dedicated to providing women opportunities to
advance by providing education, mentorship, leadership experience and business/life skills.
Here are five ways we can help in reshaping and
empowering women around the world:
Have a voice:
Martin Luther King, Jr. said that "our lives begin to
end the day we become silent about things that matter." We can get so wrapped up in our day to day
lives that we can often lose sight of the bigger impact we can have in the world around us.
Choose a mentor:
It can just be choosing a woman who you admire,
either a public figure or someone in your life. Who
do you admire? Think about what life experiences
she has overcome. What are the characteristics she
embodies? Definitely she is not someone who has
had success come easily. I bet she is someone who
stands up for herself, knows who she is and isn't
afraid to be her true self. Whatever those characteristics are, write them down, and aspire to be them
every day.
There are enough of us to change the game. You
want to see more women in charge, support your
sister; you want to see gaps closed, fill them; you
want to see a difference made, make it. When one
woman succeeds, we all succeed!!

The Power of “WHY”??
Recently I attended a “Causal Analysis” meeting.
For all those who don`t know what is a causal analysis meeting is, it is a meeting where we find the
root cause of an issue, learn from the issue and the
come up with an action plan to overcome such issues. The entire meeting was revolving around one
great word “WHY”. When I asked one of my colleague why is the meeting revolving completely
around this particular word, he said that in a causal
analysis meeting “Why” played the crucial role and
they were implementing a technique called the “5Why” technique to find the root cause. In this technique analysis goes deep inside by finding the reason for each “Why”. In the meeting the root cause
for the problem was found and an action plan was
drawn to avoid such issues.

So by now, you have you have understood the importance of the word “WHY”. So the next time you
are asked to do any activity just ask why? If you do
not have the guts to ask that person, just ask yourself why. Keep digging this question continuously in
your brain. This change in ideology may not show
immediate results, but it improves the thought process to a great extent. This will change the way you
look at things. This will reduce mere following of
the ways we were taught and lets us to come up with
an easy way to our destination. The moment you
ask this to others, they will change their thought
process and you can change their thinking style as
well.
After the meeting I did a deeper analysis about this
particular word ”Why”. I started my analysis like
why do you have 5-Why technique but not 5-What
technique or 5-Where technique. In my analysis I
came to know that other question words like what,
where, who, when and how questions your
knowledge on a subject but why directly questions
your logical ability or analytical ability. In other
words why makes you think rather than recollect
what you have studied.
I just asked history whether it is impacted by the
word “why”? History answered me stating that it
loved the word why a lot and it said that many people ran behind this word “why” and created history.
There was one such guy, who sat under a tree and
asked himself “WHY do apples fall down from a
tree”. He went a long way to answer his “Why” and
came up with the concept of gravitational force, created history and we remember him today as Newton. In our primitive days we had this concept of
burning the wife alive along with her dead husband.
Another great thinker asked himself “WHY should
the wife killed along with the dead husband” did
his analysis, concluded that Sati is of no use and
declared it is as a superstition. Many great inventions/ discoveries started with this small word
“WHY”.
Through this question “why” you can differentiate
between a process and a problem, belief and a superstition. This thought process, will lead you to
think more about the destination rather than the
path to be followed. You will find easier and better
ways to get things done rather than the same process which your ancestors used. You will be an path
finder than merely a follower of the existing one.

Happenings in TITMAS
yanan gave educational session on "Inter-personal
communication and Customer delight" and it was
really a great enlightening experience for the audience. His emphasis on how interpersonal communication can help people both in personal and professional fronts will really bring change in audience
outlook. His style of using humor as a vehicle to
make a point is really impressive. Toastmasters understood why DTM Jayan is rightly called charismatic toastmaster.
Third Anniversary Celebration
Cheif SAA MTM Lakshmi Priya called the meeting
to order. She started with a BIG Bang by setting up
the celebratory mood. By praising all the club members for their dedication and commitment who
have been part of this club she addressed the auditorium which was almost full and are rightly looking forward for a visual & oratory treat. President
MTM Lavanya A also appreciated the efforts of club
members from the charter to the relatively new
members for being part of this momentous celebration. She also chalked out the achievements the
club has won at various competitions. She quoted
"While it is true that every milestone marks a celebration, it is also marks the beginning of the journey towards next milestone" She pointed out the
growing responsibility to help all members in their
pursuit of self-improvement.
The Chief guest for the day Global delivery director
(Commerical Insurance) , Karthick S released the
much awaited club newsletter "Ebullience 8 "which
is an epic in itself. Karthick S and Delivery partner
for CNA & Hortford Rajesh Thomas addressed the
gathering. Their speeches were really encouraging and we are really thankful for the Insurance
leadership for their moral support and guidance,
time and again. The club wants to promise that it is
really geared up to meet their expectations like we
did till date.
The MC for the event - TM Lova Kiran started the
event on the humorous note to keep the atmosphere in the auditorium vivacious before inviting
the Co-host of the event MTM Pratima who did a
marvelous job. Area governor TM Ranganathan introduced and installed the new set of Excomm as they took the pledge to groom and guide
all the club members for the next 6 months.
The General evaluator , TM Karthick Boopathy has
set the right expectations and the TAG team has
unmistakably mentioned their respective objectives
so that even guests can follow the rest of the session.
Division Governor TM Rahul Shankar addressed
the gathering with his usual grace and poise. With
those kind of words, the club will definitely race in
its tireless journey towards perfection.
Calm and composed, MTM Pavithra Manivannan did a wonderful evaluation for Nivedita's
speech and provided really constructive suggestions.
Her observation skills are definitely at a higher frequency of thinking than that of rest of
the audience.
The Chair TM Sidharthan did a tremendous job to
take the occasion to a picture perfect finish. His enthusiasm and commitment is equal to the value of
infinity. No-one can ever try to quantify their affinity towards the club. His detailed vote-of-thanks
sums it up.
MTM Nivedita Rani really inspired the members of
the audience with her CC10 milestone speech titled
"You versus yourself". They were really moved and
motivated. She shared her inspirational personal
story on how she won inter-college pageantry
award and how she converted her failures at various
levels to success throughout her journey both inside
and outside toastmaster’s world. Her closing comments -"from making mistakes to making newer mistakes, from perspiration to inspiration, from self
doubt to self confidence" - rightly concludes her
Competent Communicator journey. The MCs
rightly called her pocket sized power house.
Audience were also given TITMAS customized TCS
Holiday calendar along with the lot of learning.

Happenings in TITMAS
TM Arun Prabhu who is the fourth speaker gave his
ice breaker speech by giving a glimpse of his life and
comparing crucial instances of his life to third umpire decisions in cricket match. Humor was sprinkled throughout the speech.
Ice breaker Marathon
TCS Insurance Toastmasters Club celebrated landmark 175th session by organizing CC1 marathon.
Five speakers began their toastmasters journey as
they broke their shackles of stage fear. TMOD Lova
Kiran has rightly selected the theme – Mission I’m
Possible – which rightly portrays the mood of the
session to kick start the toastmasters journey of the
first time speakers.
The final speaker – TM Saravanan Shanmugam –
gave his ice breaker speech in a humorous way as he
detailed 3 main facts about his life by comparing his
life to cricket match.
The common denominator for all the speeches was
the creative quotient of the first time speakers.
The first speaker, TM Suriya, delivered her CC1
speech in a creative way by comparing herself to a
rock and detailed how different experiences in her
life molded her as a person finally comparing how
she was transferred from rock to a sculpture.
The TT master – TM Pravallika – make the TT section interactive and interesting which encouraged
guests to volunteer as TT speakers.
The second speaker, TM Pawan Teja, gave his CC1
speech titled Pawan Teja 23* by comparing different stages his life to that of a crickets match and
concluded that this toastmasters journey as a cricket
match and his CC1 speech as debut match.
All evaluators provided motivational evaluations
with constructive suggestions which were well received by the speakers.
The GE TM Nivedita provided general evaluation
by providing improvement suggestions which can
help organize the perfect sessions.
The third speaker TM Karthick Ramasamy compared his life to that of a train journey and detailed
different stages in his life to different destinations
of train and concluded his speech that he has started a new journey with toastmasters with its destination as self improvement.
Overall Ice breaker marathon was completed on an
inspirational tone with the real life examples of
great personalities who has achieved impossible
feats.

Toastmaster’s Journey
I have been the part of TM club since Jan 2013. Initially I attended toastmasters club as a guest as one
of my teammates was giving speech. I was attracted
by the TMOD performance and witnessed some
beautiful speeches, where I observed one icebreaker
speech from a TM with a lots of grammatical mistakes, lack of fluency. I was also not able to speak
English fluently and had so much of stage fear. So, I
did not think of joining TM club. After a few
months, I again attended another session where I
observed the CC3 speech by the same TM, but this
time there was a lot of improvement in his speech.
It gave me a hope and pulled me to become a TM.

learnt many techniques from the educational sessions. TM gave me many wonderful friends and my
club members always helped me to improve myself
as a better communicator and leader.
I started giving my speeches. My ice breaker speech
is very special for me. It was delivered in a 100 seater auditorium and it showed my speaking capabilities. I used to note down my evaluation points and
make sure not to repeat the same in my next speeches. I learnt the different nuances of public speaking
such as the eye contact, facial expression, voice
modulation, role plays etc. and how to script a
speech that is audience engaging. As a TM, I have
tried my hands on different genres such as informative, inspirational, persuading and humorous
speeches. I got a chance to evaluate other TMs as
well. I attended international speech contests and
This TM journey gave me the strength to improve
personally & mentally. It taught me the art of speaking before audience, the art of giving a technical
presentation to team, the art of speaking with clients, the art of maintaining friendly relationship
with friends, the art of leading a team as a true leader, the art of management. Its really a wonderful
and memorable journey. I wish all the readers to
witness these kinds of journeys!!!!

Toastmasters makes a difference!!
"If you want something in your life you have never know what are all the positives and negatives that I
had , you will have to do something you have never have. Toastmasters taught me how to maintain eye
contact , how to organize my ideas as a speech, how
done."
Sometime ago, being on stage is nothing but a nightmare which I always avoid; Sharing my thoughts in a
team meeting is not the thing that I can do; and communicating with clients over call is something that I
can't even imagine. So with all these negative feelings,
working in IT industry has become extremely difficult
for me.
But, I did something to come out of all these fears,
that is - joining TCS insurance Toastmasters
After becoming a member, I saw a change in me!
Slowly but steadily I am able to communicate with my
clients in a way that they can understand. I came to
to start and end a conversation just like a speech. It
also taught me how to work on my negatives and improve myself. Now I may not be the best speaker, but
am at my best as a speaker.

SDLC-”Speech Development Life Cycle ”
Unit Testing / Quality Analysis:
In my exploring journey of toastmasters over a year
now, I have been always thinking of what is the best
way to speak about a chosen topic in every single project. Choosing a topic is a challenge as it needs to
meet the project objectives completely. Though I read
my practice guide thoroughly and finally chose a topic, I get stuck in delivering my speech, on how to ensure that I am meeting the objectives rightly. And last
but not the least, Am I doing the entire process correctly - Right from project objectives till delivering my
speech?
Evaluate your developed script. Let your mentor evaluate your final script with constructive feedback / criticism against your project objectives. Fine tune your
script per mentor suggestions to make your script flawless and attain the quality. Test yourself -Practice your
speech. Gain confidence with time management.
Deployment:
GO-LIVE with your speech. Remember your objectives and deliver with the best presentation skills you
are having and improving with every speech.
One day, when I was reading my Project 6
objectives, the word ‘PROJECT’ hammered my mind.
Why not try to execute entire process of a speech as a
SDLC? Why not apply my project experiences to
achieve toastmaster speech targets? Here I present
CCLC – Competence Communicator Life cycle comparing each phase of Software Development Life Cycle.
User Acceptance Testing: (After Deployment)
This phase is after deployment as now you are being
evaluated by your audience and assigned Evaluator. If
speech doesn’t go through evaluation positively, based
on evaluator feedback, you MAY need to restart from
development / unit testing phase depending upon
your content / presentation respectively. This is a rare
case. If speech passes evaluation, you have completed
the project successfully but with the suggestions to be
implemented and improved in your future speeches.
Requirement Gathering:
Understand each project objectives clearly reading
more than once. Approach your Ex-Com for any clarification before assumptions on topic selection, content and delivery of your speech.
Maintenance:
Document your performance for each project with
positive feedbacks, suggestions, corrections and improvements which needs to be improvised with your
future speeches. Get back to your evaluator to know if
there were any more left out feedbacks due to time
management. This will help to track progress with
each delivered speech.
Analysis:
Choose your topic and Research about your topic.
Analyze if your topic can outline, open, narrate / describe and conclude to meet the objectives of project
and support relevance to your selected topic.
Design:
There you go! Isn’t the project success a Lock and
Key where you need to Un-Lock your potentials and
find the Key to next ladder?
Draft your content. Your speech content is your Technical specification document which should concentrate on Business requirement document which are
Practice guide project objectives. I realized it is tough,
but once you achieve it, delivery becomes simple and
accurate. Don’t forget timelines.
When our real-time project experience can help us
easily execute Toastmaster speeches successfully, I also
found that I could take-away Toastmaster experience
of Presentation skills achieved with excellence back to
my project to face team members and customers with
confidence.
Development:
Finalize your draft content by adding flavors of your
speech objectives which will differ with every single
project. Identify weak points in opening and conclusion, check your transitions, check statements with
audience interactions to connect, list down if No. of
speech objectives is equal to at least one sentence /
example / suggestion in your speech.
I look forward to become a Competent Communicator the by end

Toastmasters at Work ! A delight !!
Every day we interact with many people at workplace in variety of situations. We may deal with clients, project leaders, managers and co-workers at
work. We may be called upon to calm an upset customer or solve a problem with co-workers or we may
be called to present at a meeting on a spur of a moment. We may have to provide a critical feedback
with tact and deal with wide range of people diplomatically.
A lot of these factors directly or indirectly lead to a
company’s success. And coming from an IT professional background, these elements of communication are tantamount to technical knowledge. There
lies a stereotype that engineers are known for not
being good communicators. Engineers are known
for not able to put the idea across or convey their
expertise to supervisors. We must have heard statements such as “the error was as a result of breakdown in communication” or “it was due to communication gap”. The effects of such consequences are
very costly and lasting.
TM Pratima
a conversation with a stranger, tools required by
one to negotiate using win/win strategies to achieve
a goal, techniques on how to diffuse verbal criticism. Above all, it prepared me to deliver presentations and present ideas effectively without any hassle. Also, I’m able to give toasts without having to
worry all the eyes are on me.

think on your feet and talk for one to two minutes.
It’s a skill that transfers well to the workplace:
Whether you’re called to present at a meeting, talking to a customer or problem-solving with your coworkers, the ability to think quickly and speak confidently is highly valued. Toastmasters taught me to
be resourceful and adjust my approach depending
on who I was talking.
Being an engineer, I was the victim of unable to
comprehend the requirements and pull out the essentials and clarify the queries during the design
phase and the aftermath was doubling my efforts to
clear the gap and yet not to compromise the quality
of product.
This is where Toastmasters provides a remedy.
Toastmasters provided me with a ticket to become
not only a better communicator but also developed

transmit the idea effectively within less time. In addition to it, being an evaluator sharpened my listening skills, I’m able to comprehend the essentials and
provide positive mentoring.

heaps from better communication skills and in turn
help our company productively.
Opportunity to fulfill officer roles is not just leading
as an example. It is also to make other leaders. Taking up VP-Membership addressed my skills like listening, planning, organizing, motivation and team
building. However, it didn’t just help me in acquiring leadership skills and personal growth but also to
identify the potential of individuals, channeling
their abilities, boosting their morale confidence and
providing positive learning environment to make
more leaders.

Interview with TM Siddharthan Eswaran
A great man once said “Nothing is cooler and more attractive than a big comeback, and that'll be me.” If one
has to describe the Toastmasters journey of TM Sidharthan Easwaran in no more than a couple of words
then it would be “The Comeback Kid”. TM Sidharthan who has joined TITMAS in Jan ’13 after being active
for few months went into self-imposed exile out of toastmasters and maintained low profile for almost an
year. And then in end of 2014 he made a comeback to toastmasters which could be termed as one of the
most scintillating comeback TITMAS club has witnessed. In less than a month after his comeback he has
donned every possible role that club offered from delivering back to back speeches to taking up Club officer
role and chairing Magnum opus event of the club in 2015, the 3rd anniversary celebrations and executed all
of them to perfection.
His TT speech at the Club level speech contest was so humorous that he left the audience in splits. No wonder he stood as the winner at the club level TT contest and represented the club in area level. Toastmaster
Sid, a passionate filmmaker, shares his experience and learning’s from toastmasters before and after his comeback.

What comes to your mind when you hear the
word “Commitment”?

me it’s the name TM Srivatsan. Yes!! He truly personifies the word “commitment”. Come what maybe it meetings, calls or anything if he has given his
word that he’s going to make to the session or take
up the role in it. He will!! VPE or TMOD has never
had to fret for his backups. A Toastmaster with an
impressive personality and super cool attitude.

Toastmaster of the Month Award
This is a special award given to recognize the efforts and commitment of a toastmaster based on
their active participation in delivering speeches, taking roles and their attendance in toast-masters
meeting. Congratulations dear Toastmasters!! Keep up the Good Work!!
For the other Toastmasters, here is the simple formula For you to be crowned Toastmaster of the
month. Playing the roles as mentioned in the following table will not only fetch you the award but the
amount of learning that goes in hand will help you grow to become a Competent Communicator and
Competent Leader. The highest points will be awarded to Toastmasters speaking and playing the
TMOD. After addition of points, the Toastmaster with the highest number of the points win the coveted
award.

Clubs adding 5 new members in the months of February and March are awarded the prestigious Talk
Up Toastmasters Award. Each club receives a special ribbon for their club banner from Toastmasters
