Accommodations
UFPA does not offer room and board
for students. However, the International
Office staff can help you to look for suitable
accommodation. Since there is a very
limited offer of student residences
in the city, we strongly recommend that
you make reservation for temporary
accommodation at one of the suggested
boarding houses or hostels, at least two
months before arrival. Then you can look
for a place to live while you're here.
More details on the “Accommodations”
section of this guide.
Paperwork
for getting a visa
To get your documentation for a temporary stay
- essential during your stay in Brazil - there are two
steps to follow: the first step begins in your country.
In your country
At the Brazilian Embassy or Consulate, in your
country, you must ask for a Student Visa Type 4.
In order to do that you must have your
Acceptance Letter (Carta de Aceite), sent by UFPA.
You will receive the Visa Application Form
(Pedido de Visto Consular) to be shown
to the Federal Police when you arrive in Brazil.
Warning: When arriving in Brazil, your passport
must not expire within, at least, one year.

Belem City - Manoel Neto

The city
Studying
and living
in Belem
Belém is the capital city of the State of Pará, one of the seven
states of the North region of Brazil. The state occupies a flat area
surrounded by a complex watershed, where many inhabited
islands can be found. The city was founded by Portuguese
colonizers in the 17th century and has a mixed Portuguese,
Indian and African heritage, easily seen in the city architecture,
food and culture.
11
Today, approximately 1.5 million people live in Belém and
the city offers all facilities found in other big Brazilian cities,
such as hotels, banks, shopping areas and many other
urban services. Beside all modern facilities found
in a cosmopolitan city, Belém preserves its historical
heritage, with old buildings, mansions, manors, and
churches. Here are a few examples of the city's landmarks:
the fortress called Forte do Castelo, the jewelry center
(Pólo Joalheiro), the iron market, and the two-century old
opera theater Teatro da Paz.
On the second Sunday of the month of October, the city
hosts a major festival called Círio de Nazaré, one of the
most important religious manifestations of the country. It is
a catholic procession joined by millions of followers on the
main streets of the city.
For other information about the city, please check
the official city and state websites:
http://servicos.belem.pa.gov.br e www.paratur.gov.br .
Access the Culture website http://portalcultura.com.br
to find cultural tours offered all over the state.
The city
Belém is also known as “The City of Mango Trees” because
of the great number of mango trees that offer their shade
to cool down the hot and humid equatorial climate.
Average temperature is 28º Celsius (approx. 82° Fahrenheit),
with heavy rainfall.
12
Access
You may arrive in Belém by river, by road or by air.
The International Airport of Val-de-Cans is the main
gateway for those who want to get here quickly. Other city
gateways are the Bus Terminal and the Boat Passenger
Terminal, where people arrive and departure to and from
all cities in the region and country.
The university
The Federal University of Pará – UFPA is a federal higher
education institution, located in the Amazon Region, northern
Brazil. It was founded in July 1957, and since then has been
the leading university center of the North region of Brazil.
UFPA has several campuses spread all over the State
of Pará. The campus of Belém hosts around 20,000
undergraduate students, attending 52 courses offered
by 11 institutes. The university also offers 86 graduate
programs (specialization, master and doctorate courses).

within the campus and can help university users regarding
safe & security issues. In order to walk around the campus,
please follow the following safe & security tips:
• Do not leave personal belongings such as wallets, bags,
books and documents unattended. In case of loss or theft,
please contact the security office (details below).
• Avoid using electronic devices (notebooks, palmtops, cell
phones, CD players, etc.) or expensive accessories such
as jewels, watches, etc. while walking around the campus
or its vicinity. Such items might draw attention.
• Try to walk in groups as much as possible and avoid dark and
desert places, where it is difficult to get help in case of need.

The leisure and entertainment space at the university is called
“Vadião”. It is a traditional in-campus meeting point, where
cultural and leisure activities for students and staff take place.
It is located at Basic Sector I and the building has a beautiful
vista of the Guamá River. Art exhibitions, literary events, music
shows and student parties are frequently held at Vadião.

Cultural aspects
Costumes
Other U seful Information
One of the most readily observed local customs is to greet
all with “bom dia” (good morning), “boa tarde” (good
afternoon) or “boa noite” (good evening), shaking hands
with all present. Same courtesy is expected of saying good
bye (até logo) before leaving.
Hugs
The embrace or hug, usually given after
handshake, may vary in intensity from a tap with
the hand on the other person's shoulder to an
enfolding movement with arm and hands that
is reciprocated. Friendly abraços (hugs) between
men and women in public are quite appropriate
in Brazil. Women usually exchange kisses on both
cheeks. Until this widespread custom is thoroughly
mastered, newcomers are advised to limit
themselves to the traditional handshake.
Children
Children are the delight of the country and it is
customary upon greeting to ask for them or greet
them personally if they are present.
Water consumption
Tap (faucet) water is chemically treated against
germs and bacteria in general. However,
we strongly encourage you to prefer bottled
mineral water when you want to drink water.
25
Other U seful Information
Acceptable social distance
The usual distance for North-Americans and foreigners
in general is about three feet apart (approx. 90 cm) for a
comfortable conversation. For Brazilians it is much shorter,
especially between the same sexes.
Gestures and signals
Brazilian Portuguese language is heavily accented by hand
and body gestures. One of the first things a foreigner learns
is the “thumbs up”, which means OK. Also, one hisses
to catch people's attention, e.g., the waiter or clerk is called
by a prolonged “ssst” or “psiu”. The American gesture
meaning OK does not have the same meaning in Brazil.
Actually, it is a sign that should be avoided, since it can
be misinterpreted as an improper gesture.
Music
A keen sense of rhythm seems to be born in Brazilians.
One of the most outstanding features of many private parties
is the gathering of a number of guests to spontaneous
demonstrations of songs and dance, etc.
Personal traits
Brazilians admire “tranquility”. It is a high compliment to be
referred to as a very calm person.
Regional traces
Brazil is a very diverse regional country. Although there are of
course national traits, regional characteristics are also well
distinguished. People are frequently referred to by the State or
city of their birth. Paraense is thus a native of the State of Pará.
