Anglers, volunteers, boat captains, Shell employees, jobbers, vendors, and tournament board members pool their efforts to create a truly unique event. The 2014 tournament is dedicated to all the men and women who have made the Shell Key West Challenge a wonderful fishing experience. PROGRAM DESIGN AND PRODUCTION BY SANDY HUSMANN Photos by Vanessa Lam, John Balzola, Michael Whalton, and many team anglers. There’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that fishing is good for your health, but we don’t claim it can lower elevated blood sugar levels or cure a disease as debilitating as diabetes. However, anglers who compete in the annual Shell Key West Challenge certainly feel great knowing that their participation supports the efforts of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). Internationally acclaimed for its work in islet cell transplantation, the DRI leads the way in cellular therapies aimed at restoring insulin production and reversing diabetes in those who suffer from the disease. Shell is proud to sponsor the Key West Challenge and we hope that, through this partnership, each day brings us a bit closer to finding a cure for diabetes. For the past 26 years we've worked hard to make this an exceptional fishing tournament and a very special fundraising event. Thanks to those of you who have been here before, and to our new friends who are joining us for the first time, we are accomplishing remarkable things. In the early days, my wife Jo and I did much of the work, but after Jo passed away, our daughter Crystal stepped up to make certain that everything was in order and that Dear Anglers, Welcome to the 2014 Shell Key West Challenge Tournament! For the past 25 years, Shell/Motiva employees, wholesalers, and vendors have gotten together for an amazing weekend of fishing in the beautiful Florida Keys all for the cause of helping others. The Shell Key West Challenge has become one of the Florida Keys most successful fishing tournaments with total charitable contributions over $2.1 million to the National Mental Health HAYDEN BLAYLOCK Tournament Chairman you, our special guests, thoroughly enjoy yourselves. Over the years she has assembled a great team and they are happy to help make your visit the best ever. As many of you know, Crystal's oldest son Matthew Sanchez was diagnosed with PAUL STANIFER General Manager, South Region Association and most recently, the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). On behalf of Shell Oil Products and Motiva Enterprises LLC, I would Type 1 diabetes at the age of five and for the past eight years, the Shell Key West Challenge has been supporting the efforts of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). I will be forever grateful to Shell and Motiva for their generous support of the Shell Key West Challenge, as their efforts give my family hope and help the DRI continue its quest for a cure. As you enjoy the blue seas and Duval Street please know that your participation is helping bring us one step closer to a cure. As always, I wish you tight lines and calm seas! like to thank you for your continued support of the Shell Key West Challenge. Their kindness and generosity supports research aimed at curing diabetes and gives all those living with diabetes hope. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend. I look forward to seeing you at the Captain’s Meeting & Party. SHELL KEY WEST CHALLENGE 9 2013 RECAP The “In It To Win It” team celebrates their victory during the 2013 Awards Banquet. Matthew Sanchez also received four Junior Angler Awards from the Key West Fishing Tournament which honors top anglers throughout the year. 10 Record Scores Highlight the 2013 Shell Key West Challenge B risk breezes from the northeast, enthusiastic anglers, outstanding captains, and cooperative fish combined to make the 25th Shell Key West Challenge a resounding success. Sponsored by Motiva Enterprises and Shell US, and fished during two clear, crisp days in early spring, the 2013 Challenge pitted corporate teams from Texas, the Southeast region, the Pacific Northwest, the Gulf States, and the Northeast region against one another and Shell jobbers, vendors from around the US and a Saudi Aramco team from the Middle East. Thirtythree teams and 159 anglers enjoyed Key West’s sunny weather and equally warm hospitality while helping raise funds for the University of Miami-based Diabetes Research Institute. After arriving in Key West Thursday, April 25th, anglers met their teammates and captains during an evening party on Ocean Key Resort’s Sunset Pier overlooking Key West harbor and the Northwest Channel. A random drawing during the Captains Party teamed up boats and anglers, and fishing commenced the following morning with lines in the water at 8:30 AM. Things got off to a great start thanks to the unique multi-species format that awards points for everything from snapper to sailfish, mackerel to marlin, barracuda to bonito and tarpon to tuna. Captains are encouraged to move from the reef to the gulfstream to maximize scoring. And several veteran captains really came through on the first day of fishing. By the time “lines out of the water” was announced by Committee Boat Chairman Findlay Sinclair at 3:30 PM, nine teams had impressive scores of 300 or more points. The lead at the end of day one was held by the Authentix team which scored 475 points fishing aboard the Reef Runner with Captain Tony Saldano. Day two proved to be even more eventful as a number of teams clawed their way back into the hunt for first place. When the final score was tallied, the Blaylock Oil “IN IT TO WIN IT” team of Matthew and Cameron Sanchez, Tyler and Dylan Mironti, Daniel Kemmerer, and Anthony Broad earned top honors with a two-day score of 1290 points. Their captain, Chip Veach of the Super Grouper, has fished the tournament several times, but this was his first win. Veach is one of several young captains who fish Conch 27 outboard powered light tackle boats out of Hurricane Hole Marina. Tournament organizers have predicted it was only a matter of time until one of the light tackle open fishermen took top honors. Capt. Chip was quick to praise his young anglers, who traded creature comforts, like air conditioning and double berths that can be found on many of the more traditional charter boats, for non-stop action. “The boys did an excellent job of catching virtually every species we targeted,“ stated Capt. Chip. “I was able to find the fish and they did the rest, so we made a great team.” 2013 RECAP During the Awards Banquet in 2013, leaders from Motiva Enterprises presented a $25,000 check to the Shell Key West Challenge organizing committee for sponsorship of the 2014 tournament. 12 Record Catches by 2013 Shell Key West Challenge Anglers (continued) Vendors took second place honors in the 2013 Shell Key West Challenge when the Illinoisbased Royal Performance Team of Tom Gilbert, Chris Suess, Mark Hill, MJ Castelo, and Bryan Jendra scored 1225 points while fishing aboard the Double Down with Capt. Brice Barr. This was the second year in a row for the team fishing aboard the Double Down to finish “in the money” as Capt. Brice led anglers from Oklahoma to victory in 2012. Third place went to day-one leaders Kathy Payn, Kevin McKenna, Dan Little, John Stewart, Steve Kirkham, and Craig Schneider of Team Authentix who scored 1185 points while fishing on the Reef Runner. Also breaking the century mark with a score of 1020 was the veteran Shell US Team One of Mark Swanson, Rick Campbell, Bob Hubbard, Lifford Luthringer, Dave Selph, and James Roosa. The fourth place team fished aboard the Jolly Roger II with Capt. Joe Mecurio III. “This is the very first time all top four teams finished with over 1000 points,” stated Committee Boat Chairman Sinclair during the awards ceremony. “As our captains have become more familiar with the multispecies format we’ve known it was just a matter of time until we had a number of teams enjoying such high scores.” Outstanding individual efforts were recognized for largest fish in the target species. Fishing aboard the Scarlet Rose, Rod Onsky caught and released a 400-pound shark. Justin Macdonald, fishing with Capt. Chuck Butler aboard the SeaClusion caught a 50-pound dolphin. Anglers Trey Smith and Paul Cole on the Double Wrap each caught and released tarpon in the 50-pound range. Jeff Argast caught and released a 49-pound permit and Sal Jamal caught a 35-pound kingfish. A total of 10 sailfish were caught and released, including one by angler Matt Roach of Roach Energy in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Matt was fishing with Capt. Jim Sharpe aboard Sea Boots and this was his first sailfish, but what makes the story even more interesting is the fact that Matt’s grandfather Doug, dad Steve, and uncle Scott have all fished in previous Shell Key West Challenges, making this the first family with three generations enjoying the great fishing offered by the tournament. Dr. Luca Inverardi and Tom Karlya, speaking for the DRI, thanked the anglers and sponsors during the Awards Banquet on the Sunset Pier at the Ocean Key Resort. Over the past seven years the Shell Key West Challenge has contributed more than $500,000 to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. Total charitable contributions since the tournament began 25 years ago have now topped the $2 million mark. As the evening wound down, Motiva Enterprises General Manager Paul Stanifer presented tournament organizers with a $25,000 check for sponsorship of the 2014 Key West Challenge. Tournament director Crystal Blaylock Sanchez thanked everyone for the overwhelming support during the past quarter century and encouraged anglers to mark their calendars for the 2014 tournament. Once the trophies had been presented and accolades were shared, teams headed up Duval Street swapping stories of the fish that got away and the ones they’ll catch during the 26th Shell Key West Challenge. This was the fourth year in the last five that the Canadian team has dominated the competition, which attracted more than 1,000 students from across the Americas. The 2012 winner from Mater Dei High School in Evansville, Ind., placed second with a run of 2,308 mpg on the track through the streets of downtown Houston. “What the Laval team accomplished is truly remarkable and it underscores the long way our own cars and trucks can go to improve their fuel efficiency,” said Mark Singer, global project manager of Shell Eco-marathon. “Each year, dedicated high school and university student teams astonish us with the advances they make in achieving unheard-of fuel-efficiency improvements.” Mater Dei High took top honors in the UrbanConcept category, with a winning mark of 849 miles per gallon of gasoline. Second place went to the Louisiana Tech University team whose vehicle achieved 335 miles per gallon of diesel fuel. For their part, members of the Guatemalan team were 22 overwhelmed by the hospitality, generosity and camaraderie, said Andrés Hernández, its team manager, adding: “It feels like home.” Since 2010, the ShopGirls team of Granite Falls High School in Washington has been the only all-girl team to compete. SHELL KEY WEST CHALLENGE 25 Support for the DRI BioHub Swells With Gifts Of More Than $4 Million eading with vision and passionate commitment, Camillo Ricordi, M.D., director of the Diabetes Research Institute, has devoted his life’s work toward finding a cure for diabetes. Acknowledged by his peers as one of the world's top scientists in curefocused diabetes research and cell transplantation, Dr. Ricordi is wellknown for inventing the machine that makes islet transplantation possible. Today, Dr. Ricordi and his team at the DRI, together with partners around the world that are part of the DRI Federation, are combining a multidisciplinary approach to create a DRI BioHub, an integrated mini organ that mimics the native pancreas and restores natural insulin production in d i a b e t e s p a t i e n t s . D r. R i c o rd i anticipates some pilot clinical trials to begin in 2014 and states, “We are putting the pieces of the puzzle together to replace the pancreas.” Throughout his tenure, he has personally contributed more than $1 million to support the DRI’s research program and just recently pledged another $500,000 as a result of becoming the newly-appointed president of the Ri.MED Fondazione in Palermo, Italy. “After attending the presidential installation board meeting for the Ri.MED Foundation, I am happy to report that I will be donating my compensation as president to the DRI Foundation,” said Dr. Ricordi, whose gift is the total of the honorarium he will receive for serving in this position over the next five years. “I’m hoping that others may possibly match this gift in support of the DRI BioHub,” Dr. Ricordi stated in an email that he sent to National Board Chairman Harold Doran, among others. Without hesitation, Harold and his wife, Kelly, soon after L 26 announced that they would gladly match Dr. Ricordi’s contribution. “When I received Dr. Ricordi’s email indicating that he was going to donate money to further the collaborative research that is being done at the DRI, I was excited and Camillo Ricordi, M.D humbled. Excited that since he was willing to make such a financial commitment at this time, the research must be ready to make a quantum leap–which I think it is.” Harold continued, “And humbled that he chose to endow this organization to such a degree financially, when he has already invested 20 years of his time and talent in it. He is not only a world class scientist; he’s a world class guy.” From there, the wave of good news continued to swell. National board member Bonnie Inserra and Larry Inserra of Inserra Supermarkets, Inc. and their family announced an extraordinary gift of $2 million. “In an effort to honor the DRI's accomplishments and their unwavering commitment to a biological cure, our family has followed the generous initiative of Dr. Camillo Ricordi. We will continue to support the DRI's incomparable work to create the DRI BioHub,” stated Bonnie, who serves as secretary of the National Board. “Each and every time I go into the labs, I learn more about the scientists’ skills, their innovative projects and unique approach to accelerating cure-focused research. I leave there more energized with renewed hope and faith, knowing that these brilliant scientists are working for that cure,” said Bonnie, who is often at the Institute accompanying new supporters. For the Inserra family, their commitment to a cure is deeply personal. “When our daughter, Lindsey, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 18 years ago, our family decided we needed to start searching for a cure. We looked the world over for the best researchers we could find who wanted to CURE this insidious, merciless disease.” She continued, “When we discovered the DRI, we realized that we had found what we were looking for and even more than we had dared to hope. Nothing was going to stop them from finding a cure.” Another National Board member, William J. Fishlinger, treasurer, echoed Bonnie’s sentiments. “We’ve been supporting the DRI for a long time. Our daughter, Alexandra, was diagnosed at age 6, 20 years ago,” said Bill, who is the chairman and CEO of Wright Risk Management (continued to page 28) DRI BioHub Support Swells (continued) Company, Inc. and WRM Holdings, as well as senior and controlling partner of a New York law firm. Along with his wife, Joan, the couple contributed an additional $250,000 to support this exciting initiative. “In my mind, the DRI BioHub presents the best opportunity for a cure for type 1 diabetes. And as part of the leadership of the DRI Foundation, I think it’s important to show our commitment to the mission.” Other members of the National Board have increased their support for research, as well. “My family and I are fully committed to helping the DRI because we know it is the best place to support if you want to find a cure,” stated Piero Gandini of B o v e z z o , I t a l y, w h o s e r v e s a s president and CEO of FLOS, an international lighting company known for changing the concept of illumination. He is also the deputy chairman of Sostegno 70, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Milan that provides aid to children and families at the onset of the disease. The Gandinis made a $250,000 gift to fund additional research. “The news about the BioHub is very exciting. It was a natural reaction to make a contribution at this time to support it.” The father of Chiara, who was diagnosed at 1 and is now 15, Piero explained that families affected by 28 Bonnie and Larry Inserra, and their children Lawrence and Lindsay contributed $2 million to support the DRI BioHub research program. The Diabetes Research Institution Foundation's Board Chairman Harold Doran and his wife Kelly matched Dr. Ricordi's contribution. diabetes are very anxious to see an end to this disease, particularly when they feel they have been waiting for a cure for so long. He continued, “All of sudden, something that seemed to be in the clouds before is now something we can really feel on the ground. DRI scientists have one goal—to find a cure for diabetes. I know when I speak to them that they are committed to that goal…it’s in their eyes and in their voices. ”National Board members Esther and Marc S. Goodman and Ken Shewer, along with his wife Susan Winberg, established the Stacy Joy Goodman Memorial Foundation in 1994 after Marc’s daughter lost her battle with type 1 diabetes at the age of 17. Its mandate is to raise funds to help find a cure, and the DRI is the primary recipient of its funding. Ken, Esther, and Marc have served on the National Board since 1999, and Marc was chairman from 2003-2007. They have been closely watching over the scientific advancements made at the DRI and are more enthusiastic than ever before. “The science has progressed to a place we only dreamed about years ago,” said Marc, speaking on behalf of the Stacy Joy Goodman Memorial Foundation, which recently made a $250,000 contribution toward the DRI BioHub. “We’ve always been behind the work of the Diabetes Research Institute, but now more than ever, we truly believe the approach and the groundbreaking strategy behind the BioHub could be the answer we’ve all been waiting for." W ith the leadership of this organization putting their financial support behind this platform, Harold articulated his optimism and thanks. “I hope their generosity will induce other stakeholders to join us in this campaign as we move to shorten the timeline for the cure. These gifts represent the faith that our board members have in the exciting and promising science that is going on now at the DRI,” he said. In response to Harold’s call for action, another National Board member, Glenn Kleiman, made a generous donation to support the research most recently. Along with his wife, Gisela, they will stop at nothing until the DRI finds a cure for their daughter, Alison, as well as Glenn’s brother, Gary Kleiman, DRI’s senior director of medical development. Glenn summed it up best, “I've never been more optimistic about the DRI's research. Several elements of the BioHub are nearing clinical trials. I'm proud and excited to be a part of this.” As the momentum continues, hope for a cure is quickly feeling more real than ever before. Join the effort! Roy was selected from five finalists in the 2014 Shell Science Lab Challenge, a competition that honors science teachers who, with limited school resources, have developed innovative approaches to provide quality lab experiences to students. Sponsored by Shell Oil Company and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the competition encourages teachers (grades 6-12) in the United States and Canada to share their ideas and experiences for a chance to win the science lab makeover and an all-expense-paid trip for two teachers to the 2014 NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Boston. Roy had applied for small grants in the past but this was the first major proposal she'd written. "The application was a six page narrative with six additional pages of support materials," Roy said. She received an email from the judges telling her she'd made the cut and instructing her to submit a 5-minute video within two weeks. Roy knew nothing about making a video, but two of her IB (International Baccalaureate) students said 'we can do this' and they stepped up and worked with her to produce a winning effort. "I have the greatest students," stated Roy, who teaches juniors and seniors in the AP and IB programs at Vanguard High School. Four national finalists were also honored with science lab makeovers valued at $8,500. Teachers from Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; eStem Public Charter School in Little Rock, Arkansas; Taos Middle School in Taos, New Mexico; and Delta High School in Delta, Colorado were recognized for their outstanding science programs. In this, the fourth year of the competition, Shell awarded more than $90,000 in cash, lab equipment, and science support materials to Ms. Roy, the four finalists and the 13 regional winners. C Candace Roy Shell Science Teaching Award indergarten Teacher Kristen Poindexter was presented the 2014 Shell Science Teaching Award for her positive impact on her students, school and community through exemplary classroom science teaching. The $10,000 prize, which is sponsored by the Shell Oil Company and managed by the National Science Teachers Association, is awarded to one teacher nationally each year. The announcement, which came as a surprise to Mrs. Poindexter, was made during an allschool convocation in late February. "I am completely shocked, humbled, and awed to be chosen," stated Poindexter as she struggled to hold back tears of joy. “Kristen helps her students experience learning in an environment that connects the standards she is required to teach, within authentic concepts and contexts,” said Spring Mill Principal Subha Balagopal. “When we think about inspiring children to grow up and tackle anything, Kristen does this and more. She is growing young scientists who are inquirers and thinkers. This esteemed recognition of a kindergarten teacher is a powerful reminder of the importance of science education in the early years.” As the Shell Science Teaching Award recipient, Mrs. Poindexter received, in addition to the $10,000 cash prize, an all-expense paid trip to attend the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Boston earlier this month where she was honored for her achievement at a special banquet and ceremony. We at the Shell Key West Challenge extend our congratulations to both Kristen Poindexter and Candace Roy for their love of science and commitment to teaching. Blaylock Oil employees have always played a vital role in the success of the Challenge and this year we are thrilled to welcome two newcomers—Jan Ledford and Monica Franceschi to the fold. This tournament has become a generational event, with Hayden turning over the reins to Crystal several years ago, and now Matthew and Cameron coming of age, helping their mom, and leading a team of young anglers to victory in 2013. The doctors and scientists from the Diabetes Research Institute are passionate about finding a cure for type 1 diabetes, and are also great friends who enjoy fishing and helping with logistics during the weekend. Findlay Sinclair serves as Rules Committee Chairman responsible for the challenging multi-species format and for deciphering the score sheets at the end of the day. Photographer Vanessa Lam of LAM Studios captures brilliant images of team members and social functions. And graphic designer Sandy Husmann creates this beautiful program, then comes to Key West with her husband Richie to pitch in and work the tournament.
