SCOUTING THE WILDCATS (16–6, 12–6 CCAA): After an up–and–down start to the season, the
Wildcats has been on fire down the stretch, winning eight of their last nine entering Friday’s game in
Seaside. That stretch began with a 62–48 win over the Otters in Chico on Jan. 18. Individually, senior
guard Jazmine Miller leads a balanced Wildcat offense at 13.4 points per game. Hannah Womack and
McKenzie Dalthorp chip in 11.4 and 10.3 ppg. Analise Riezbos is the team’s top rebounder at 7.4 rpg.
WHEN LAST WE MET: For 30 minutes, the Otters were the better team when the teams met in Chico
on Jan. 18. but a 10–minute cold spell (during which the Otters went 0–for–13 from the floor) allowed
Chico a 17–0 run that proved to be the difference in a 62–48 Wildcat win. CSUMb got a then career–
high 17 points from Chezla Self (Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta College). Hannah Womack led
Chico with a game–high 19 points.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED, OTTER EDITION: Following a fast start, the short–handed Otters couldn’t
keep up the pace and Cal State San Bernardino came back to post a 67–51 win in The Kelp Bed
Saturday afternoon in front of a national TV audience on the CBS Sports Network. Chezla Self led the
Otters with 16 points. Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Parl/Santa Rosa JC) just missed her first double–
double of the season, finishing with 10 rebounds and nine points.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED, WILDCAT EDITION: Chico bounced back from scoring a season–low 21
points in the first half to post an important 54–51 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night in
The Torodome. Jazmine Miller was the only Wildcat to reach double figures, finishing with 19 points.
Analise Riezbos grabbed 12 boards, all off the defensive glass.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: This will be just the second Feb. 21 game for the Otters and the first
one at home. The last time they played on this date they dropped a 70–50 decision at UC San Diego
on Feb. 21, 2009.
WHAT A STEAL: Chezla Self tied her own career–high with four steals Saturday against Cal State San
Bernardino. She overtook fellow senior Ashley Morgan for the team lead, 36–35, a mark that ranks
No. 12 on the CSUMB single season list. She needs four more steals to catch Dana Andrews (2009)
for a top 10 spot on that list.
LIKE A THIEF IN THE…DAY: Senior forward Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) collected her 133rd
career steal Saturday versus San Bernardino, tying her with Dana Andrews for the No. 2 spot in the
CSUMB caeer list. Jessica Fontenette (2010–13) owns the CSUMB career record of 183.
HOLCOMB FROM LONG RANGE: Senior forward Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) passed current Otter Assistant Coach Stefanie Corgel) for the No. 2 spot on the CSUMB career list for 3–point
field goals by making her 94th Feb. 6 at Cal Poly Pomona. She needs three more to become only the
second Otter ever to reach 100 career treys. Dana Andrews holds the high water mark at 178 in a career
that spanned from 2006–09.
HOLCOMB ON THE REBOUND: Holly Holcomb entered the season holding the No. 2 mark in the
CSUMB career rebounding list and now has 598. With two boards Friday night, she will join Krista Herr
(643 from 2005–08) as the only Otters to reach 600 career rebounds.
SHE SHOOTS, SHE SCORES: Holly Holcomb (629 points) moved up another spot on the CSUMB
career scoring chart last Saturday vs. San Bernardino, passing Brittani Jefferson (627) for third place.
Dana Andrews holds the Otter record with 1,359 points.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY OTTER BASKETBALL NOTES • FEBRUARY 18, 2014 • PAGE 3 OF 23
HARRIS ON THE REBOUND: A return to the starting lineup has done wonders for Mykayla Harris, who has posted the two best rebounding games of her
career in her first two games back as a starter. She grabbed a career–high 14 rebounds at Cal Poly Pomona (Feb. 6) and 10 at Humboldt State (Feb. 8). She
is averaging 9.0 rpg since returning to the starting lineup on Feb. 6.
MORGAN AND HOLCOMB ON THE REBOUND: With her 10–rebound performance versus San Bernardino Saturday, Ashley Morgan vaulted up four spots
to No. 18 on the CSUMB single season rebounding list with 135. With her seven boards in the same game, Holly Holcomb now has 124 rebounds and needs
just seven more to catch Shonetta Crain–Williams (131 in 2012) for a spot in the top 20.
MORGAN REACH 200–POINT MARK: With nine points Saturday versus San Bernardino, Ashley Morgan brought her season point total to an evn 200. She
needs 37 points over her last four games to catch Denise Sanchez (237 in 2005) for a spot on the Otter single season top 20 list.
THE DEFENSE DOESN’T REST: Defense continues to be the staple of the Otter diet, with CSUMB entering Friday’s game allowing just 60.6 points per game.
The Otters entered the week ranked No. 2 in both the CCAA and the West Region and No. 28 in the nation in scoring defense.
70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn’t 42, it’s 70. With Saturday’s 70–63 win at Humboldt
State, CSUMB is now 32–2 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Prior to the 2013 regular season finale (an 84–75 overtime loss to Chico
State), the Otters hadn’t scored 70 in defeat since a 85–79 loss to Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 6, 2008.
