On Behalf of the All Saints School Community and St.
John Vianney Parish, we would like to express our
sincerest sympathy with the announcement of the closing
of St. Mary Magdalene/St. Justin Martyr School at the
end of the 2012-13 school year. We realize what a
tremendous and very personal loss this is for the families
involved as well as the greater community and Catholic
education.
This past Sunday, February 24th, All Saints held an Open
House for those families new to our school. What a
wonderful event! Over 100 new students registered. We
therefore anticipate an enrollment of over 300 for the
2013-14 school year. We look forward also to a smooth
blending of all our new and veteran families.
Please know how very diligently our school community
will work to maintain our level of distinction and ensure
the continuity of All Saints’ tradition of excellence.
With change comes anxiety, but with prayer and hard
work, we anticipate an even stronger and more vibrant
school community. Please keep us in prayer.
Last But Certainly Not Least, Congratulations To Our
8th Grade Girls Basketball Team on winning the CYO
City Championship last Sunday! The score was 20-15.
Our girls played St. Bridget’s a previously undefeated
team. Great job girls! We’re very proud of you. The team
members are, Monica Eckford, Christina Capretta, Kayla
Langford, Jessica Edwards, Regina Ploplis, Amy Bowens,
Ashley Bayer, Sammy Salatino, Jenna Vanek, Meghan

LIVING WATERS: Today and the next
two Sundays (at the 9am Masses) are the
Scrutinies (for the RCIA members). We,
look closely at ourselves to see how we are
following the Lord. How thirsty are we for
the living waters offered by Jesus? Do each
of us realize that the Lord is the way, the truth and the
life? Do we, do you, witness to his place in your life?
Our faith is based on this witness, and
on that of our ancestors who have
been touched and nourished by the
risen Lord. We sponsor and encourage

are asked to learn more about
the Catechism of the Catholic
Church – why we believe, what
we believe.
Why are we supposed to accept
suffering in our lives and take
up our cross and follow Jesus?
Christians should not seek suffering, but when they
are confronted with unavoidable suffering, it can
become meaningful for them if they unite their
sufferings with the sufferings of Christ. Christians
do have the task of alleviating suffering in the
world. Nevertheless, there will still be suffering. In
faith we can accept our own suffering and share the
suffering of others. In this way, human suffering
becomes united with the redeeming love of Christ
and thus part of the divine power that changes the
world for the better.
Sunday Afternoon Bereavement Group will meet
on March 10th in the Library of the Parish

The parable in today’s Gospel clearly
warns that we, like the fig tree, will be
judged by our fruit. While God
mercifully provides us with time and
opportunity, let us give witness to our
faith with deeds of
kindness and generosity.
What better time of the
year then the season of
Lent to show our good
and loving God our
gratitude.
Here are some ideas to bolster yours and your
family’s spiritual life during the Lenten season.
1. Read the lives of the saints to your children (or
yourself) 2. Encourage each family member to do
something nice for someone every day Take the
whole family to a Lenten program at the parish 4.
Clean closets. Donate gently used items. 5. Turn off
the television and spend quality time together
Today we celebrate the feast of St. Katharine
Drexel. She was born to a prominent Philadelphia
family. Katharine used a $20 million fortune and
devotion to God to help others. We may not have a
fortune at our disposal, but our devotion to God
may help us see how to help others.
In 2002, President George Bush declared March
as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
Each year more than 148,000 people are diagnosed
with colorectal cancer, and more than 56,000 will
die from this disease. Colorectal cancer is the 2nd
leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S.,
yet, it is one of the most highly preventable forms
of cancer. Early diagnosis is critical to survival!
Research shows that 91% of patients with localized
colorectal cancer survive for 5 years after diagnosis,
yet only 37% of all diagnoses occur at this stage.
The remaining 63% are not discovered until the
disease has spread. Please, if you are over 50 and/or
have a family history of colorectal cancer, see you
physician about being screened for this disease.

again this year! Open to children
ages 3-8, we will be having this fun
event on Saturday March 23rd
from 10 am-11:30 am .Registration
forms can be picked up at the parish
office. This event is free and open to all families.

We are still looking for volunteers to prepare meals
for our Spring Semester. If you are interested and
want to get involved with the youth group, please

It is time to get together all past and present
“One Love” team members for the 15th annual
celebration of Saint John Vianney and Saint
Aloysius “One Love” Tournament. The agenda
has expanded and will include some great warm
up and some skills training from some of the
area’s finest grade school and high school
coaches. Meet in the gym at the CPL at 10:30
and opening tipoff is 11:00. Pizza and pop will
follow all the games and activities.

Our Project Hope for the Homeless Collection
In 2012, Project Hope for the Homeless provided a
recordbreaking 396 individuals with shelter, care and
guidance, for an up-to-45-day stay. Of these, 80 people
were children – more than triple the number of children
three years ago. Each person was made in God’s image,
and Matthew 25:40 calls us extend the love He has shown
to our most vulnerable neighbors. You can make a
difference in the lives of Project Hope’s shelter guests by
making a donation of a Wish List item, gift card, or
finances through March 10. You can learn more about
Project Hope at www.projecthopeonline.org.
Some of the top items needed are: ear plugs for sleeping,
Styrofoam cups, bowls and plates, powdered drink mix,
individually wrapped snack items for lunches like:
granola bars, applesauce, fruit cups or paper products like
toilet paper, paper towels and travel size toiletry items
like: shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant and more.
There is a box for Project Hope in the Gathering Space
where you can place your donations. Collection
continues through Sunday, March 10th, but you can give
all year. Thank you for your kindness and generosity!
Beginning March 4, St. Vincent
de Paul will be providing Easter
Food Baskets to our clients.
We are in need of boxed potatoes,
boxed Jello, cake mixes, canned
fruit and vegetables, and quarter
and half hams. We will be giving
each of our young clients an Easter treat bag, so we
are also looking for donations of chocolate bunnies
and Easter candy.

Dear Parishioners,
Sister Angela
Marie Waldron
passed away on
February 15,
2013, after over 60 years of
service to the Diocese of
Cleveland as an Ursuline
Sister. Sister Angela Marie
has two sisters who also are
members of the Ursuline
community, Sister Brigetta
and Sister Catherine (the former principal of Lake
Catholic High School). Her brother, Harold, is a
wonderful member of our parish community. Sister
Angela Marie served in many capacities as an
educator and she served so well with her goal always
being to bring children closer to Christ and to the
Church. Being a teacher right up to the very end,
Sister donated her body to the Cleveland Clinic for
research and teaching purposes. Her memorial Mass
was celebrated at the Ursuline Educational Center
last Saturday and our own Father Kovacina was the
celebrant and homilist. Father Kovacina met Sister
Angela Marie a few years ago when he was a nine
year old at Saint Clare Church in Lyndhurst. Father
spoke well of Sister at the Mass and it was a very
nice celebration for a remarkable woman who made
a great impact on the educational scene of our
Diocese for so many years. All the members of the
Waldron Family are such great people and we are
blessed to have Harry in our parish. Please pray for
the repose of the soul of Sister Angela Marie and the
other deceased religious, priests, and deacons of our
Diocese.
Each year on February 19, members of the Marine
Corps League join us at the 8:00 morning Mass to
pray for their comrades who died during the World
War II Battle of Iwo Jima. They also pray for the
few survivors who remain to this day. The Battle of
Iwo Jima began on February 19, 1945, and it took
several weeks to be completed. It was one of the
more costly battles of World War II and it was one of
the more decisive ones in that it gave our troops the
needed airfields right off the coast of Japan. This
annual Mass was a tradition begun many years ago
by our own famous World War II Marine, Chuck
Malinowski, and the tradition has continued despite

Chuck’s death. Chuck participated in the Battle of
Iwo Jima and was awarded several medals for his
bravery in this battle and others. Chuck often shared
with me and others his war stories and his great pride
in being a member of the United
States Marine Corps.
There was one Iwo Jima survivor
in attendance at the Mass, George
Dorko and he received a standing
ovation at the Mass from his
fellow members of the Marine
Corps League and all the
parishioners who attend the 8:00
morning Mass. It was an honor
for me to recognize him at the
Mass and to talk with him
afterwards. May God bless him and the other
dedicated men and women who served or currently
serve our country in one of the branches of the
military. May God also grant eternal rest and peace
to those who have died in the service of our country.
The eighth grade girls basketball team from Saint
John Vianney Parish beat Saint Bridget’s basketball
team last Sunday afternoon in the City
Championship game at John Carroll University.
The girls played well and the final score was 21-15.
Many of these girls also played on our team which
won the City Championship for volleyball several
months ago. Congratulations to the girls and to their
coaches: Rick Lytle Junior and Rick Lytle, Sr.

I had the chance to give the girls a special blessing
at the parish before they departed for the game at
John Carroll. I am sure our local high schools will
be eager to welcome these talented young women to
high school sports. Many of the girls are students at
our parish school, All Saints, and this is one more
reason for me to be so very proud of our parish
elementary school.
I was happy to see last week that the majority of the
students at the soon-to-close Saint Justin MartyrSaint Mary Magdalene School in Eastlake chose to
apply for the next school year at our parish school,
All Saints.
I was saddened to hear that their school would close
at the end of this school year. It is always hard to
see a Catholic school close and it was especially
hard for me to see this one close since it was my
parish elementary school. I graduated from Saint
Mary Magdalene School in June of 1966 – at a time
when the school likely had well over 1000 students.
Willowick was truly a “baby boomer” community
then and the school was an excellent one. I am
happy to welcome these students to our parish
school and we certainly will do whatever we can to
make them feel welcome and to ease the transition.
I went to SJ-SMM school last week to talk to some
of the students to ensure them they were welcome at
our school. I truly am glad that many have made the
decision to come to All Saints. Let us pray for the
good people of Saint Justin Martyr Parish and Saint
Mary Magdalene Parish as they grieve the loss of
their parish school. May God bless them and help
them and be with them in their time of loss.
We celebrated the annual
White Mass last Sunday at
11:00 and I had the privilege of
blessing the hands of over 100
healthcare workers in our
parish community. It was a
special blessing for me to have
the chance to bless the hands of
some doctors and nurses in the parish who took care
of me during some of my hospitalizations over the
past ten years. Thank you to Maureen Kraizel for
organizing this yearly event and for coordinating our
parish Wellness Committee. Call me if you would

Maureen. It was also good to see so many
parishioners come forward to receive the Sacrament
of Anointing at one of the two Communal Anointing
Masses over the past two weekends. Let us all
continue to pray for those who are sick or suffering
and for those who care for them.
Let us also pray for Benedict XVI as he begins his
retirement and for the cardinals
who will soon gather at the
conclave to elect a new holy
father. Bishop Lennon has given
us permission to offer votive
Masses for these special intentions
in the coming days. It will likely
take a while for me to get used to
omitting the name of “Benedict”
in our Eucharistic prayers and
starting to use whatever the name of the new pope
might be, e.g. Thomas, Russell or Peter. The
conclave should make for interesting news in the
coming weeks and I am sure the excitement will
build as we get closer to the start of the process.
This is the weekend of the Celtic Ball and the
Hooley. I am hoping that all goes well at both
celebrations and that everyone has a great time. You
can still purchase raffle tickets at the parish office for
the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas cruise next
winter. The prize of the raffle is a trip for two on
this parish cruise. I know that we will have a great
time on the cruise. A raffle ticket is $20 each or 6
for $100. The winning ticket will be drawn at the
conclusion of the Hooley on Sunday night.

Decree on the Pastoral Office of Bishops in the Church
The First Vatican Council (1869-1870) focused on the bishop of Rome, the pope, but it
never got around to saying anything about the other bishops. When the Second
Vatican Council was called, everyone expected it to take up this unfinished business. This decree
describes how bishops exercise their office in the universal church, their own particular diocese, and at the
regional or national level.
A veritable job description of the bishop is given built around the threefold work of Christ as prophet, priest,
and king. The bishop is to proclaim the Word, sanctify the people, and shepherd his flock.
In exercising their duty of teaching, the bishops are to announce the Gospel of Christ to a l l men,
calling them to a faith in the power of the Spirit or confirming them in a living faith. In their sanctifying
role, bishops should be mindful that they have been taken from among men and appointed their
representative before God in order to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. As father and pastor, bishops are
to stand in the midst of their people as one who serves. In doing this, he is to gather and mold the whole
family of his flock so that everyone may live and work in the communion of love.
The pastoral office of a bishop is constituted for the governing of a diocese so that the good of the Lord’s
flock is always the prime consideration. Sometimes auxiliary bishops will be appointed because the
diocesan bishop cannot personally fulfill all his duties as the good of souls demands, either because of
the size of the diocese or the large number of inhabitants. The auxiliary bishops are to exercise their
office that they may act in all matters in single-minded agreement with the diocesan bishop.
The document continues by considering an intermediate level between the local diocese and the universal
church. Episcopal conferences first emerged in the nineteenth century, and Vatican II affirmed their
value. The USCCB resulted from the guidelines offered by the Decree on the Pastoral Office of Bishops
in the Church.

SAINT JOHN VIANNEY’S PROJECT
WITH ROOTED IN FAITH – FORWARD
IN HOPE FUNDS: Our parish completed
the Catholic Community Foundation Rooted
in Faith – Forward in Hope Campaign at the
end of 2011. All parishes were asked to
participate in the campaign to raise funds for
Catholic Charities, Catholic Education, Evangelization,
and Care for Clergy. The goal assigned by the Diocese for
our parish was $1,695,000 and we were truly blessed to be
able to raise $2,293,312 in pledges from 714 households or
families. Over the course of the next few years as pledges
are paid by our parishioners to the Foundation, we
anticipate receiving a total of about $800,000 from this
campaign to use on a local project.
SAINT JOHN VIANNEY ANNUAL FISH FRY
When the campaign began, I announced that we would use
our share of the funds to improve the quality and quantity
of parish office and meeting room space. Some
parishioners told me at the time that they were not able to
support the diocesan campaign or that they would prefer to
support only a local project rather than the four diocesan
initiatives. I would like to meet with these parishioners
and any others to explain in greater detail this local
project. A committee has been working on plans for
several months and I am excited to share them with you.
They involve creative renovation and reconfiguration of
space in the former church, the present office building, and
the Father Kline Center. Please consider attending one of
these three meetings with me.
