SPECIAL EDITION MAY 16, 2016 DAISY Award Says Thank You to Our DAISY Nurses Mae’s Nomination Story Mae Woodward, RN, Home Health “I’m not sure exactly how to begin because Mae’s care extended to every aspect of our lives during the time my husband was her patient. Whatever problem we presented, she figured out some way to bring comfort. I always looked forward to her warm, friendly smile and attitude. “Mae was resourceful, seeing solutions that sometimes were very simple and not obvious to me or my husband. Her exceptional teaching skills helped me feel comfortable changing my husband’s bandages. And she was reliable: I always knew that if she promised to contact the doctor, order a prescription or investigate a problem, it would be done. In the year that we were with her, there was never a time that she failed us. “Despite the sadness in regard to the health of my husband, we still managed to have laughs and some fun times, something that was extremely important for me. I felt as if she were my friend even though the difference in our ages was great. Mae Woodward, RN “When Jerry was very close to the end of his life, Mae saw him each day. I am speaking of Saturday and Sunday! When the end was imminent, she helped me through those last hours in a way that was gentle, directive and consoling. I could not have asked for anything more. “Mae is one of a kind.” L. to rt.: Mae’s colleague Sharon Kroll, MSW; Mae; and Elaine, who nominated Mae for a DAISY Award All Our Nominees Mae’s husband and son attended the March 14 ceremony. Dat’s Nomination Story Dat Phung, RN, MedSurg, 8 Silver A story from a colleague: “The patient ‘weebled and wobbled,’ falling over and landing on the floor. Dat called the doctor about the fall – missing his break – putting his patient first and going above and beyond with patient care.” A thank you from a patient: “Dat was not only attentive of my care but very funny as well. He explained my new pain control and got me an extra dosage at midnight because of the new onset of pain. He told me about the new flu shot and offered to get me a shot, despite it not being available until the next day. Dat went out of his way to discuss my upcoming procedures and, of course, made me feel like a friend and very comfortable about staying here in the hospital. Dat is a very good asset to EvergreenHealth and deserves this award.” Dat Phung, RN CNO Nancee Hofmeister presented Dat with a “healer’s touch” sculpture at the March 24 ceremony. Each DAISY nurse receives a hand-carved sculpture made for The DAISY Foundation by an artist from the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. Healers are regarded by the Shona people as treasures, and the well-being and safety of the healer is of community-wide importance. DAISY nurses rely on their colleagues to help provide the exceptional care for which EvergreenHealth is known. THE DAISY AWARD IS AN INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO RECOGNIZE EXTRAORDINARY NURSES. The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the Barnes family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died (at the age of 33) from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Touched by the remarkable care, clinical skills and compassion demonstrated by nurses during Patrick’s illness, the Barnes family made it their mission to recognize exceptional nurses around the country.
