Thomas Heneage Art Books 42 Duke Street St James’s London SW1Y 6DJ This guestbook provides a fascinating insight into the glamorous clientele of New York’s most famous German restaurant, Lüchows. The restaurant was a hub for the stars, with signatures dating from 1950-1963, and celebrities ranging from Alfred Hitchcock to Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx, Marlon Brando, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Liberace, Richard Nixon, and Joan Miró. It was particularly popular with the entertainment elite, attracting musicians, actors, directors and models from all over the world, at the height of their fame; along with politicians, authors and sportsmen. Founded in 1882 by August Lüchow, the restaurant built its reputation on beer, wine, German cuisine, music and a unique set of festivals and traditions, from the annual Goose Feast, to the lighting of the largest indoor tree in the city at Christmas. The décor was notably opulent, in dark mahogany, and furnished with tiffany glass, skylights, and stag heads throughout. The food was equally decadent, with signature dishes including Wiener Schnitzel, Huhn I, Topf, and Sauerbraten mit Kartoffel Klosse. It dazzled with celebrities for over a century, surviving prohibition, and witnessing key transitions in the entertainment industry, from silents to talkies, black and white to colour, analog to digital recording. A little glamour lives on in the pages of this guestbook, preserved in the flamboyant signatures, playful doodles and outrageous comments of a golden age. 85pp., unbound, enclosed in original burgundy menu holder, with Lüchows crest on the front.
