Shawn is also an X-Box and Star Wars nerd. Tony Jones - Drummer, plays a full traditional drumset with trigger on kick drum as well as an electronic set of pads for hand clapping or special FX. Tony started playing drums because "he is a dumb ass as he should have been a singer/frontman so he could be a bigger asshole." Paul "Papa" Popadak - Production manager, sound engineer, stage manager, light production/operator, drums, cargo truck driver and chief bottle washer. This guy does it all and very well I might add. Based out of Virginia Beach, VA Snackbar Jones is one of the East Coast’s premiere party bands. The band was formed in 1997 and has an extensive set list that keeps growing and staying fresh. Checkout their songlist at www.snackbarjones.com/songlist_new.html Snackbar Jones Snackbar Jones, a full time working cover band, is like a bowl of Jambalaya. They work almost every night and have a bit of everything for everybody. Snackbar Jones caters to whatever venue they are working and to whatever the crowd wants to hear. Frank Hohl is a mastermind at doing this. He’s been doing it since the band's inception 10 or so years ago, but it is the effort of all 5 members of this band that makes it run like a machine. The band members are: Frank Hohl - Frontman, Leader, Main Vocals, Lead & Rhythm guitar and 3 years sober, for real. He has a cat that is gay and has had sex with every drummer he has worked with except Tony. Aaron Barlow - Bass, back up harmonies and sings 2 - 4 songs a night, one to remember is the Georgia Satellites, "Keep Your Hands to Yourself." Aaron has been with Snackbar from the beginning. Aaron is only a bass player because "he had to put NASCAR driving on the back burner because of his vertigo." Shawn Lindfors - Lead & Rhythm guitar, back up harmonies and tons of special FX including keys, piano, sax, full horn section, and synth sound. So if you are listening to "Ring of Fire" and you hear a fat group of horns, that is Shawn playing horns from the guitar and special secret FX pedals. That particular song, "Ring of Fire" is a hybrid version of Cash’s style Popular on college campuses, Snackbar Jones plays a wide variety of styles including modern rock, alternative, new wave, punk, ska, pop, classic rock, disco and hiphop. Snackbar was one of THE first cover bands to cover contemporary hip-hop, which has always been a really important genre for Frank. SBJ’s has performed from Key West, FL (Sloppy Joe’s) to Rochester, NY and everywhere in between. They have shared the bill with acts such as The Beach Boys, Salt-N-Pepa, Eddie Money, Kool & the Gang and The Smithereens to name a few. This band is perfect for college functions, frat parties, weddings, corporate events, outdoor festivals and club dates. Frank was influenced by Neil Diamond as his Mother made him watch "The Jazz Singer" twice and was always playing it at the house when he was growing up. Only SBJ’s can make a Diamond song "Forever in Blue Jeans" sound cool and fresh. Conditioned to Diamond’s songs, it’s very easy to figure out that they also do a Monkees tune, "I’m a Believer" which was written by Diamond. Another song that would seem impossible to cover is Cindy Lauper’s "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." I will not tell you the secret on how Frank can do this, but it is done amazingly well. Frank likes to cover songs by "Weezer" and they all sound great. Nobody else can touch "The Final Countdown", by Europe with Shawn playing a strong guitar pedal patch which contains, horns, keys, and synth. A few more songs to mention, Def Leppard’s "Poor Some Sugar On Me" Frank’s vocals are spot on and sound much better than Joe Elliot’s singing live. Prince’s "Purple Rain" is definitely one song to hear as Frank really is feeling this song. Vocals are magically Prince and Frank’s lead guitar is strong, note for note. SBJ’s can pull off all of their songs mix them up, emulate DJ’s and try to make the party happen to get the rowd singing, dancing and cheering them on. As good as SBJ’s is, Frank is grounded and knows that one can only take themselves but so seriously. He always thought that "cover bands talking crap about other cover bands is like waiters from Applebee’s ragging on waiters from Ruby Tuesdays." Some of the latest tunz that SBJ’s are performing or will be shortly are as follows: Lollipop - LIL Wayne, Pork and Beans - Weezer, South of Heaven - Slayer and maybe even the retarded "Kissed a Girl song." Frank has written about 40 originals in the last year (Monte Carlo and others are on their myspace profile page) and they are ready to start putting material together to go into the studio. So be on the lookout for an all original SBJ’s CD coming out in the not so distant future. SBJ’s plays every Monday in Newport News, every Wednesday in Virginia Beach, and every Thursday in Hampton. Frank says "I’m only in a cover band so I can be a D-list celebrity and challenge C-list local celebrity Bob Fresh from 96X to a charity boxing match. For the money….mostly for the money." www.myspace.com/thesnackbarjones Photo and interview by: GreatBoz@GreatBoz.com Open Mics Splash provides our readers with the most extensive list of open mics and jams anywhere. Suspension at Fuzion Ink We caught up with Josh and Pu at Fuzion Ink on Granby St. Norfolk. Josh and Pu handle the piercing at Fuzion. They both display body enhancements of their own as well as a sweet array of tattoos, which is to be expected. Fuzion is well known for their outstanding tattoo artist which have waiting list as long as your arm, but the piercing at Fuzion is being taken to a whole new level. The guys say they will put a piercing anywhere on the body that is safe. They are very professional and know what they are doing. They use freehand style technique and they only use internally threaded body jewelry. They work in a sterile environment and The thing that is really unique is their involvement with suspension. For those of you that might not be familiar with suspension it is being suspended in the air by having hooks inserted into the back or other areas on the body. The hooks are attached to ropes and the person is slowly lifted off the ground and suspended. The person may then hang in that suspended position for as long as they wish. The length of time seems to vary from person to person. There are many different positions the body may be suspended in. Each position has a different name like Coma, Suicide, Resurrection, Crucifix, Superman and others. Pu Nastee and Josh Burgh are joined by Andrew Bancroft and Ryan Provido of Ocean Mystique. Together they form the team that does the suspensions. We were lucky enough to catch up with Erik and Lucy Day who were celebrating their 1st year anniversary. They chose to be suspended for that event and we were there. The experience was unique. I think the invited guest were as effected by the event as were Eric and Lucy. We were worried about the flash on our cameras being a problem for the couple but as events moved forward cameras came out from everywhere. The Sandbar at Bubba’s Marina sits on the Lynnhaven River right at the foot of the Lesner Bridge and is an excellent choice if you desire a casual atmosphere which allows you to take advantage of one of the best views that Virginia Beach has to offer. The Sandbar is an open-air eatery and opened its doors, so to speak at the beginning of the 2008 summer season and as each week passes it is gaining in popularity. It’s owners, Dimitri and Josee Hionis are extremely active in the operation of the Sandbar and can usually be seen on the deck. Management responsibilities are ably handled by Will Miller, who spent most of his career managing the Duck-In restaurant as well as the Friday night beach parties. Will is excited about the buzz that the Sandbar is causing and for many natives it will be reminiscent of the atmosphere at the Gazebo. I initially chose the Sandbar because a friend of mine who is a musician was booked to play there on a Wednesday night when they first opened. I wanted to come out to show my support and from that day on I became an instant fan of the Sandbar. I was hooked immediately by the breathtaking view of the Lynnhaven River. After a long day of sitting in an office with a view of a busy street in downtown Norfolk, this was exactly what I needed. Add to that good music, food and drinks and the Sandbar rapidly became an item on my list of things to do. The Sandbar is adjacent to the Shellfish Company on Shore Drive at Bubba’s Marina and you can enter by walking through the store or directly from either side of the large deck. Or you can pull up to the dock if you happen to be traveling by boat, as many patrons do. In addition to serving wine and various cocktails a light menu of steamed shrimp, crab legs, oysters and clams are available. If you are not in the mood for seafood you can also order Buffalo wings or nachos. I ordered a half pound of medium steamed shrimp (small and large are also available) and the nachos, which can be prepared with either chicken or beef. The portions were surprisingly large and were plenty for two people. The shrimp were steamed at the Shellfish Company and came out perfectly with just enough seafood seasoning. The nachos were piled high with toppings and the grilled chicken was an appropriate alternative to the normal beef that you would get with nachos. If you prefer a full meal, patrons also have the option of ordering from Bubba’s menu which features fresh local seafood daily prepared to your liking. The Sandbar can accommodate parties of any size on the spacious and comfortable deck and according to management they are gearing up to regularly provide live entertainment. The servers on staff at the Sandbar are friendly and attentive and the prices are reasonable. The Sandbar is a perfect combination of atmosphere, food and drinks. Whether you are traveling by land or by sea, it’s a great place to unwind or entertain family and friends. Thursday Open Mic Blues Jam w/ Twofeathers 7-11pm Sun. 35¢ Wings + 1/2 lb. This Month’s Bands 8- The Dynamos 22- Ever After 9- Ever After 23- Dunn & Co. 1485 General Booth Blvd. Virginia Beach 491-2229 unfortunately haven’t had the time to attend a show at the Lafayette (I hope to change this in the next week or so), but have read plenty about it through all of these emails you guys have sent me. One reader writes, "I went to the Lafayette one afternoon with a few friends, not expecting much out of the evening. After we arrived, and had a few drinks. The staff was nice and the regulars were fun to hang out with. But, as soon as Forefront hit the stage, I saw just how live the place could get. I had such a good time at the Lafayette Grill, the next morning I woke up at a bus stop in Mexico with a surf board that had a shark bite in it and a snake charmer named Darla." So there you have it Bros, if that doesn’t sound like a clutch time, I don’t know what does. Wow! I had no idea that it was gonna take this long just to do Norfolk, my hands are tired, and my buzz is starting to die. Local Love So, next month I say we pick this back up with the Beach (lets ride this wave as long as we can baby.) Greetings Splashers, It’s me Big B, back again with another installment of local love. This also means you have more time to write in to corndogydog5447@yahoo.com and give me more to talk about. Now, last month we asked you guys to tell us about some of the Hot Spots in the 7 C’s. Well, I was happily surprised to learn that there is still literacy left in VA, and tons of you have emailed me some memorable moments had at some of Virginia’s great places for good times. Remember, we still have 6 of the 7 C’s to go so don’t let me down Virginia. I’ll see you in September, Peace! First off, we will start out in my home city Norfolk, VA. Now anybody who has ever partied in the "Folk," as we locals like to call it, knows of the high class, dress-coded clubs of downtown Granby St., or, the bright neon lights that line the row of bars on Colley Ave. Please don’t get me wrong, being a Norfolker like myself, I have had plenty of run-ins with babes and bouncers on both of these streets, but what they both lack is live music. To fix this problem we need to make a U-turn on Colley Ave. and head down to the other end, at a place called Tanners Creek. Now, if you’ve never been to Tanners, let me prepare you… The food is great, and if you’re a seafood lover, then it’s pink crustaceans and good vibrations for you. Not only is the food at Tanners BANGIN, but you’re also sure to enjoy it in front of a live band. That’s right! The kind people at Tanner’s Creek feature a mother load of live music. Coming from Ugly Friend of New York all the way to the Dunes of Norfolk, the Creek features all styles of bands and music, in fact my band the FSC has even graced its stage. Now, if you go back down Colley and turn onto 26th Street, which will turn into Lafayette Blvd., which is conveniently located a block from my house, and also houses another spot for live music, The Lafayette Grill. The Lafayette has just recently started their live music venture, which means there is gonna be bands out the A-hole trying to get in there. I Up All Night on HRMusic.tv is Hampton Roads’ first and only regional music Internet broadcast.
