Doing What Bowling Does Best
A wonderful, but little known fact, is bowling raises millions of dollars each year for local and national
charities. Sister Center's Jupiter and Saint Lucie Lanes have hosted some of the most successful
fundraising events on the Treasure Coast. When we partnered with Publix/MDA we raised over
$30,000 in two fun filled afternoons at our Family Entertainment Centers. St. Lucie Council on Aging
2015 Annual Event at Saint Lucie Lanes Center raised over $16,000 in one afternoon.
Hundreds of Publix employees fill Saint Lucie & Jupiter Lanes to support The Muscular Dystrophy Association every year.
Bowling fundraisers are popular because everyone can participate. It is not strength nor gender
based and there is no expensive equipment to purchase – we provide it all ! There are no “rain dates”
with our fundraisers because we are never affected by weather and set-up is easy. But most
importantly, bowling fundraisers generate funds for the hosting organization.
Our fundraising events are tailored for both large and small
gatherings. Some of our most successful fundraisers include
Boy Scouts of America, Save the Chimps, Dogs and Cats
Forever along with local Not For Profits, Church Charities and,
of course, Youth Ministries.
Priced right, we are confident that with only one phone call
any organization can set up a successful fundraising event.
The key is planning. We provide you with marketing to our
database of over 14,000 people and create press releases to
alert the media about your upcoming event. With over 2,500
customers a week passing through our bowling center, our
daily announcements of your upcoming event reach a huge
number of people to further encourage attendance.
It's difficult to estimate the total amount of money raised in
bowling centers annually for charities but, without a doubt, it
Saint Lucie Lanes Bowler Phyllis Marino is
amounts to millions of dollars. An example, "Bowl for the Cure"
the driving force behind the very successful
annual Save The Chimps fundraiser.
and Susan G. Komen to Fight Breast Cancer raised 1 million
dollars in 2014 and since 2000, over 10 million dollars was raised for this most worthy cause.
The Bowling to Veterans Link---founded by bowlers in 1942, whose Board of Directors are
representatives from USBC and BPAA- is bowling's oldest charity. It provides recreational and
therapeutic programs and services to brighten the days of America's active duty and veteran service
men and women. In 2014, it raised a cool $1,000,000 and has generated over $30,000,000 overall!
Many of our bowlers are involved in charitable events and
fundraisers, for sure. In part due to their belief in community
service but also because they love the sport of bowling. For
example: The entire Probst family is involved in our league
bowler program. Father Scott works close with Terry, our Junior
Coordinator; to make certain all our juniors have positive
experiences while learning the universal rules of good
sportsmanship. Scott’s children, Logan and Trinity, are both
past winners of "King of the Hill", a weekly Saturday morning
tournament of the USBC youth league bowlers.
Scott Probst mans the grill at the youth
bowler’s season ending party.
Phyllis Marino one of the organizers of Tuesday Duo's league
and the driving force of "Save the Chimps”, an organization
dedicated to giving experimental chimps a comfortable live after
service. We find ourselves asking, how can we improve our
customer service; our food; our beverages; bowling and the
arcade ?
Everyday we strive to improve and we need your input whether it be a complaint or a complement.
Please visit www.bowlfl.com and send us your comments. Once received, we will respond to each
and every customer. Feel free to make suggestions and remember to KEEP THE BALL ROLLING !
OLD: Findings suggest Cardio helps slow down aging of the brain. As we get older, we experience
occasional lapses of memory. It makes all of us worry. Research published in the April 2015 edition
of Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, found that “cardiorespiratory fitness” improved the
brain function of older adults.
What is cardiorespiratory fitness? Cardiorespiratory fitness is a measure of how well your body is
able to transport oxygen to your muscles during exercise and how well your muscles are able to
absorb and use the oxygen, once it has been delivered, to generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
energy via cellular respiration (cellular respiration is a chemical process in your body's cells that
converts the energy stored in the food you eat into the ATP form of energy that is recruited for use by
your muscles).
Translated – exercise keeps the body and brain strong. They write, "We hope this study provides
additional motivation for older adults to increase their levels of physical activity, which positively
impacts health, mood, cognition and the brain."
YOUNG: Holding off on carbohydrate snacks and eating high-protein foods reduces the afternoon
munchies and unhealthy eating among teenagers. Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Exercise at
University of Missouri, Dr. Heather Leidy, published in Journal of Nutrition, May 2015 "...we found
when teens ate high-protein snacks, they incorporated more protein throughout the day and
consumed less fat. We also found the high-protein snacks improved certain aspects of mood and
cognitive (brain) function."
EVERYONE: For folks of all ages, according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, there are
important benefits of exercise including reduced blood pressure and triglycerides, increased "good"
HDL cholesterol, a lower risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and improved chances for maintaining a
healthier weight.
Among Women: A new study suggests that physical activity may reduce a woman’s risk for lung
cancer. Researchers followed nearly 132,000 postmenopausal women over a twelve-year period and
found that a woman's risk for developing lung cancer or dying from it decreased the more minutes
she spent per week engaged in exercise. Lead author Dr. Ange Wang adds, "We saw that as levels
of physical activity increase, risk of lung cancer decreased... It seems to indicate that you don't have
to kill yourself… It doesn't need to be strenuous. You just have to put the time in."

ASK THE BOWLING DOCTOR… (772) 465-4444
Dr. Ian C. Boykin MD
imdadoc@icloud.com
Any injury can be a terrible and aggravating experience. Bowlers may
sustain injuries ranging from muscle sprains and joint strains, to the
more severe orthopedic and chronic pain problems. Not all injuries are
career ending or life threatening, but they do require appropriate
(medical) attention to head down the path to recovery. This month I am
discussing Bowler's Tendonitis.
Tendonitis is a nagging injury. Once developed, it never seems to go
away. Tendonitis produces a dull ache or sometimes-sharp piercing pain
that persists with most any movement of the specific joint. The type of
pain is directly related to the severity of the injury. Many bowlers experience tendonitis once or more
during a career.
Bowlers Tendonitis is similar to tennis elbow and the same as golfers elbow. Bowler's Tendonitis is
medically termed medial epicondylitis and is the irritation and swelling of the tendons located medially
at the elbow joint or on the inside and middle of the elbow and forearm. Paralleling tennis elbow, both
occur as a result of repetitive motion. The type of pain is directly related to the severity of the injury.
Treatment of Bowlers Tendonitis:
1. The first step is to see your doctor. Ask if your condition is too serious to continue bowling. Your
doctor may recommend medication that might help treat your tendonitis.
2. You can try using over the counter ibuprofen, if it is not contraindicated for any other medical
conditions. This will help you manage the pain and inflammation.
3. A wrist or forearm brace can help provide support and decrease the pressure and strain of your
forearm and elbow area.
4. Immediately after bowling, ice the area to minimize swelling and pain. Ice the area 20 minutes at a
time, once every 2-3 hours.
5. About 24 hours after bowling, switch from ice to heat. Use a heating pad or warm towel (not too hot
where you will burn your skin). Heat the injured area about 30 minutes at a time, once every 4-6
hours.
A simple strain or sprain may take as little as 2-3 weeks of rest before tissue can recover completely.
More serious injuries, like a tendon tear, may require 6-months or more for a complete recovery. It is
very difficult to bowl, let alone bowl effectively, when injured or recovering from injury. The competitor
in you may push you into bowling when injured, but it will only hurt your team and may further
aggravate your injury. Allow yourself time to heal.
Joint, muscle and tendon stress from bowling can occur with improper repetitive movements of the
approach, arm swing, release, and follow-through. Muscles, tendons, and joints may become
weakened and damaged through unnecessary twisting and turning. Take time to bowl correctly by
taking advantage of bowling lessons by USBC Certified Coaches.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Spotlight On: Lynn Silber
Lynn Silber volunteers at both the Alpert Jewish Family and
Children’s Services and Levine Jewish Residential and Family
Services. She is a true humanitarian and avid bowler. Lynn bowls
with the Jupiter Lanes Tuesday Trios and Ladies on Strike Leagues.
She also hosts an Autistic Group of children and adults on the
4th Monday of every month. They meet at 1PM for pizza and then
bowl. Lynn considers it a privilege to “pick up the tab” on this very
worthwhile adventure for these special friends. She will tell you
“This is very important work but I get something out of it that money
cannot buy. This is a rewarding and emotional experience that
allows me to touch these special people’s lives.”
A retired Minneapolis high school and college art teacher, Lynn is
also an accomplished concert pianist who played with the
Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. Using her art education background she now teaches at Alpert
House.
Lynn's husband, Art, sits on the Board of Directors and is the
Treasurer for AJFCS. As owner of the Potomac National Baseball
Team, you may have caught a glimpse of Art in uniform at Jupiter
Lanes gifting signed baseballs from his players to our league
bowlers.
Since 1974 the AJFCS has been serving our community by
continually enriching people of all ages through focused programs
addressing the well-being of children and families; the
independence and well-being of older adults; and the optimal
quality of life for individuals with special needs.
The Palm Beach County Levine Jewish Residential and Family
Services is a premiere program for adults with disabilities. Their
mission is to optimize residents potential enabling them to lead
fulfilling lives in a least restrictive environment.
Lynn says "I was very lucky to have all the options I did, and am
very lucky to have opportunities like at Alpert Jewish Family and Children Services to have fun and
the thrill of the art projects we work on, the bowling we enjoy together, and the big hugs and the
deeply-meant feelings that the residence show me. They are very important to my life and help me to
be a better person, as I hope I'm helping them."
Every day we strive to improve. We welcome your comments and suggestions
whether complaint or compliment. Please visit www.bowlfl.com and send us
your comments. Once received, we will respond to each and every customer.

Employees Of The Month
Jupiter Lanes Bernard Hatcher
Bernard Hatcher, Jupiter Lanes Food Court Manager, is
truly a model employee who is admired by his colleagues
and all our customers. We hardly believe it is already been
10 years since Bernard came on board in 2005.
An extremely hard worker, Bernard’s responsibilities go way
beyond doing schedules, ordering and receiving product,
supervising and mentoring staff. Bernard wears every hat in
his department and is the backbone of food and beverage.
He can always be found in the middle of the action, in the
trenches, with his crew on the front line of food preparation
and service.
A Jupiter Native is a rarity -Bernard has lived his entire 50
years right here in town. Upon graduation from Jupiter High,
he immediately jumped into the workforce and hasn’t
stopped yet. He learned his culinary skills the old fashioned
way, “on the job training”. Bernard draws on both his
success and from each and every mistake he has made in
his chosen profession. Bernard is on the job 24/7 as he continues to inspire and mentor those under
his supervision.
Bernard and his wife, Edith, have 5 grown children ranging in ages 23 to 28. The family loves the
outdoors and spends as much time as they can fishing, biking and kayaking with his children. We
want to raise a glass and toast Bernard to thank him for being a senior member of our family at Sister
Centers. We are blessed by his presence and proud to have him in our ranks. Congratulations on a
successful life and thank you for being a positive influence on all you come into contact ! !
Saint Lucie Lanes Lucille Esposito
For many guests who visit Saint Lucie Lanes there is no greater
hostess than Lucille Esposito. Lucille has been a manager and
exemplary employee since joining the time in October 1992.
When our Lucille first came to what was then called “Port St.
Lucie Lanes” 23 years ago, it was owned by a partnership
headed by Bill Gould. Round about 1998, almost 17 years ago
the bowling center was purchased and the name changed to
Saint Lucie Lanes. Since that time we know our Lucille has
never missed a beat!
Lucille and her husband Paul and daughter Nicole moved from
Brooklyn, New York in 1998 to Port St. Lucie, Florida. All of
Lucille's family is originally from Brooklyn and yes, our Lucille has
never lost that identifiable Brooklyn accent. Lucille’s sister,
Nancy, often visits Florida. There is a lot to discuss when the
girls get together because Nancy held the title of “General
Manager” at Brooklyn's Gil Hodges Lanes.
Lucille's Mother, Josephine Ciccone, lives on her own in a small apartment at Nancy's home in Staten
Island. Josephine, an amazing 97 year young lady is full of life and love. Our Lucille visits Mom and
family, including sister Marie, a couple times a year to spend as much time together as a busy life will
allow.
Bowling is a Ciccone family tradition. The torch is carried by the new generation of Lucille’s
grandchildren: Christian 16, Isabella 12 and Gabriel 4 years old. Gabriel bowls on the 10 for 10 Learn
to Bowl league and earned his free bowling ball. Christian being 16 years old just developed other
interests as young man… he just discovered girls don't have cooties after all !
Our Lucille has bowled on Sparemakers League, Wednesday mornings for over 10 years and been
their League Secretary for over 5 years earning the 2014 USBC League Secretary of the Year.
Daughter Nicole bowls with Mom Wednesday mornings. Both enjoy the company of the wonderful
ladies that make it up this league. Lucille carries an average of 151 and has had a high game of 236.
Our Lucille is widely loved by her colleagues and all the folks she comes into contact with at Saint
Lucie Lanes. She will tell you the main reason is: "Saint Lucie Lanes is dear to my heart. Having
most of my family still up north the fine guests of the Lanes are my extended family and the Lanes is
my home." We love you Lucille and our lives are enriched by your presence!
A Perfect Strike On Land & Sea
Sunny skies, calm seas and fish are biting! A perfect
day for our Gone Fishin' Bowling League on a private
chartered fishing boat. Bowling and Fishing? Not
your typical combination but…we are here on the
Treasure Coast and combination is perfection!
"It just seemed a natural match," said Bill Ronayne,
President and Founder of Saint Lucie Lanes Gone
Fishin' League. "Bowling is the America's most popular
participation sport. We have beautiful marinas and
facilities here so sport fishing is huge, the combination
a blast."
For Gone Fishin' bowlers the "pay-off" is a deep sea
fishing trip on the Lady Stuart. We enjoy a licensed and
experienced captain, mates and a magnificent private
chartered fishing boat equipped with whatever you
needed for a perfect day on the water! "Saint Lucie
Lanes many fun leagues, like vacation leagues; two day
theme park excursions; and cruise leagues. But this
one day getaway still remains the most popular
because some of us just can't get more than one day
off from their jobs," said Ronayne.
For those interested in learning to bowl or learning to
deep sea fish, this is a perfect summer activity. No
experience required! The Summer 2015 Gone Fishin' League started Sunday, June 7th at 6:20pm but hold your lines....it's never to late to join! All ages, all abilities, all welcome. Visit the front desk to
