The BEST High School
Athletes Do This…
Threshing Bee time in Butterfield
Guest Columnist
Dr. Scott Burtis, M.S., D.C., Burtis Chiropractic Center
The fall sports preseason is off and running.
Once again Martin County
athletes are coming together and crossing town
boundaries and old rivalries to bring out the best
in each other and themselves. As the two-a-days
and Captains’ practices
begin one thing that will
make the biggest difference come playoff time
is how well the athletes
bounce back from injuries.
And whether you (the athlete) or your parents are
out to just have fun or perform at your highest level,
there are tried and proven
ways to make sure that you
are ready for your best season and your best playoff
run.
This article is more
for those who want to be
their best, but it also applies to anyone who happens to get injured while
participating in athletics.
The past few years have
seen many teams with a
very promising season
end up disappointed after
a key player or two receive
injuries that end their
season. The unfortunate
thing is that very often
those injuries would have
responded to appropriate chiropractic care. It is
quite frustrating to me as
a chiropractic physician
to see a player I know get
injured and then choose
the wrong kind of care for
their injury, often un-necessary surgery, more often pain pills for a sprain/
strain that ends up healing
poorly and limiting their
performance for the rest
of their high school career.
There is no better proof of
the amazing impact chiropractic can have than
looking at the long list of
elite professional athletes
that have credited chiro-
practic care with keeping
them at their best. This list
includes Emmett Smith,
Joe Montana, Tom Brady,
Adrian Peterson, Michael
Jordan, Wayne Gretzky,
and on.
I have seen a number
of local athletes respond
amazingly to chiropractic
care integrated with appropriate nutritional advice. At Burtis Chiropractic we have had a number
of all conference athletes
as patients, not to mention state tournament participants , school and state
record holders, and even
quite a few of the athletes
that continue their careers
into college. Your body
can heal at its best and
fastest when the nervous
system is clear and functioning without interference. This becomes important especially as you
respond to injuries and a
hard season. That is what
chiropractic does for the
athlete’s body.
drink and an energy bar.
Proper balanced meals of
high quality protein, fresh
fruits and vegetables, and
an appropriate amount of
carbs are vital to the top
performance of your athlete. Individualized plans
are the best based on the
kind of sport your athlete is
involved in and the genetics they have been blessed
with. For elite info talk to a
trained sports nutritionist
who knows more than just
creatine and BCAA’s.
For now let’s go back
to the topic of Biofreeze.
Many people choose to
treat joint inflammation
and pain with anti-inflammatories. Do these
actually help the injury?
NO!! They only block pain
which can result in people using damaged joints
and making things even
worse. Biofreeze reduces
pain by reducing swelling and inflammation, so
it actually helps the healing process. This applies
whether your injury is
sports practice induced,
caused by an injury, or the
result of gardening. Along
with chiropractic and appropriately prescribed nutraceuticals, these are the
only the things that will
result in your body healing
better! So whether you are
nursing a sprain, arthritis,
or plain old wear and tear,
Biofreeze may be the best
way to bring you relief so
you can stay active while
you rehabilitate.
One of the go to products every athlete should
have available on the field
is Biofreeze.
Biofreeze
is the elite sports crème
that has set the standard
for sport crèmes. It has
the most research behind
it and is very effective at
both relieving discomfort
of mild sprains/strains
and also stabilizes soft
tissue until you can get to
your chiropractor. Every
player, coach, and trainer
should have some readily available. The faster

and most importantly, full
of fun!
Another
important
health tip is to make sure
high school athletes get
proper nutrition.

The
Butterfield
Threshermen will hold
its 49th annual Steam
and Gas Engine Show
on Saturday and Sunday,
August 15th and 16th at
Voss Park on the west
edge of Butterfield.
In the past this twoday event featuring antique tractors, engines,
cars and machinery as
well as pioneer town
and crafts has drawn upwards of 25,000 people.
Admission is $10 for
adults (good for both
days) with children under 13 free. Parking is
free, and the shaded Voss
Park campground along
Butterfield Lake is available for camping.
Several steam engines
and antique tractors will
thresh about ten acres
of wheat and oats during the show. Over 250
antique tractors from
Rumleys to Hart Parrs
will be on display and
parade each afternoon at
2:15 p.m. along with classic cars and trucks. This
year’s special attraction
at the antique car exhibit
is pre-1968 Ford vehicles.
The tractor featured on
this year’s button is a Oli-
ver 70 and will be on display during the 2015 show.
The show’s many other
attractions include wood
cutting by a saw mill,
lathe mill, shingle mill
and much more. The Voss
Park grove will be loaded
with antique gas engines
big and small, not to mention scale models. A steam
building houses a permanent display of stationary
steam engines. There will
be a stock antique tractor
pull held on Friday evening at 5:30.
The pioneer town replicates early Butterfield with
a school, general store,
church, homestead, grist
mill, print shop, saddle
shop, livery and more.
Each has working displays showing how early
Butterfield thrived. Pio-
neer crafts like spinning,
weaving, doll making
and broom making are
on-going, and the many
antique collections will
delight all.
A new feature at the
show this year is the
Swap Meet on Saturday,
August 15th. People with
cars, tractors or parts are
encouraged
to participate.
The gates will
open at 6:30
a.m. for anyone
interested in
taking part in
this new event
either as a seller or buyer. Interested parties
may
contact
Tom Anderson
at 507-381-2834 for more
information.
Continuous
entertainment on stage from
Friday night through
Sunday will feature
outstanding bluegrass
bands. The audience can
watch in shaded comfort
with a variety of foods
available on the grounds.
Sunday morning the 9:00
a.m. open air church service will feature some of
the bluegrass groups.

Tequila Majitos
Cool off with a refreshing summer drink!
If you grow your own herbs you know that some of
them come up every year and can be invasive. So it
is with mint and, except to use as a garnish, I had no
recipe that called for a significant amount of it. Then
my friend Sharon Hansen shared her recipe for Tequila Majitos with me and that solved the problem!
This is a refreshing summer drink and is perfect
for a Mexican-themed dinner.
Tequila Majitos:
1 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup fresh mint leaves
Heat water and sugar bring to boil until sugar dissolves, remove from heat add mint, steep for 2 hours,
strain and cool then add:
1 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 cup tequila
2 cups lemon lime pop like Sierra Mist
Stir and serve over ice
I took a can of frozen limeade, made it as directed
and froze it into ice cubes. By using them, the drink
didn’t get watered down.
I made a double batch and used 1/2 cup tequila
and 1/2 cup triple sec. I filled the glasses with ice,
then filled the glasses half full with the drink mix and
then added the pop. My guests enjoyed them. Stay
cool and have a great week!

Ask A Trooper:
Running Lights Concern
by Sgt. Troy Christianson,
MN State Patrol
Question: My car
has running lights and
I always assumed that
meant my rear lights
were on as well, but my
husband let me know
one day as he was following behind me in the fog
that my tail lights were
not on. Since then, I have
noticed that many other
drivers must assume the
same thing. You might
want to let them know
they need to actually turn
on their lights during the
day when it is foggy or
raining. Thanks
Answer: We have been
fighting that battle for
many years now and I
hear about it all the time
from people. I have always
taught motorists to drive
with their headlights on
at all times, even during
the day, so they can avoid
the whole issue of when to
have headlights on. Even if
you think you have head-
lights on all the time, you
might not. Turn them on
manually; then you will
know for sure.
Daytime running lights
cannot be used in lieu
of actual headlights during the times that actual
headlights are required
to be on. During those required times of headlights,
all the other lights also are
required (e.g., tail lights,
marker lamps, etc.). Those
other lights are not always
on when the so-called
“automatic” lights are on
either.

dressed in black, these three sisters are ready to tackle any
problem and enter any home either together, in pairs or even solo.
Dust bunnies won’t be safe with these girls on the job.
HENRY has his own fan club. He has several people that walk in
the room and ask “Where is Henry?” This friendly black and white
neutered male is a favorite because of his great personality. He
loves to cuddle and play.
A FEW OF OUR DOGS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION:
TAZ is a brown Chihuahua mix with a few quirks. This cute little
guy stands on his hind legs and begs to be picked up, but then
backs away. He has trust issues that require a commitment to get
past his barriers. With the workers and volunteers that he trusts,
he is loving and personable. With new people, Taz is stand-ofsh.
Do you have the time and patience to make him love you?
CAPTAIN is a yellow lab mix with a cute little white blaze on
his forehead. This neutered male is just under a year old. In his
previous home he lived with kids and was partially housetrained.
Captain was surrendered when his owner moved.

Nature by
the yard
By Al Batt
I filled the bird feeders.
I put out a few peanuts in
the shell for the blue jays.
I saw or heard no jays as I
did so, but they were feeding upon the peanuts before I made it back to the
house. Blue jays are definitely not featherbrained.
I suspected
the
blue jays
considered me
a simple
c r e a ture that
cached
food just as they did. They
were happy to steal my
poorly hidden treasures.
Young blue jays begged
to be fed. Goldfinches
and house finches spread
about the feeding stations.
I wondered if all male
finches were named Atticus. Young Baltimore orioles bellied up to the grape
jelly feeder. It was a real
jam session.
I saw a horse fly. It was
no big deal. I’ve seen a
goldfish bowl. Canada
geese were flying, having
completed the molt that
left them earthbound.
I found a lightning bug
sitting out the day on a
leaf. There are 15 species of
fireflies found in Minnesota. They believe in the adage, “When ya gotta glow,
ya gotta glow.” I see their
sparkling work beginning
in late June or early July.
Whenever I see them, I go
silent with wonder.
Q-and-A
“When do wild turkeys
begin to fly?” They fly as
early as 10 days of age and
are capable fliers by the
time they are 18 days old.
“Why do chipmunks
chip?” There is a chipmunk that vocalizes in my
yard from its perch on the
tire of a wheelbarrow. No
matter how long it sings,
it’s not a tireless singer.
Eastern chipmunks communicate via a wide variety of chips, chucks and
trills. Warning calls are
used by females to alert
young. Territorial calls
lead to aggressive behavior
toward other chipmunks.
Chases establish hierarchy
among males competing
for females. Chipping and
chucking are oft-repeated
calls. Trills are shorter in
duration and are given
during pursuit by a predator or a perceived predator, with the likely primary
function being to warn
family members.
Pitch and frequency
identify predator types.
Some people believe that
a chip is made in response
to danger on the ground
while a chuck means it’s
in the air. The chipmunks
in our yard (Chip, Dale, Alvin, Simon and Theodore)
find haven in our downspouts, but continue to
make terrified trills from
there. Chipmunks become
more vigilant, run more
direct and shorter routes,
and delay exiting burrows
after hearing an alarm call.
Sunday morning
A good friend named
Penny Jacobsen of Albert
Lea wrote this,
“You have heard about
churches with bats in their
bell towers. This is a story
about going to church identified by someone as speaker. We all enjoyed
with a sleepy bat and a a juvenile brown-headed having the little cowbird as
part of our group, and I’m
quite sure we all appreciated the fact that the bat
did not wake up and try to
join us.”

The city of Truman is
eagerly anticipating the
completion of the current
phase of its storm water
project that has had many
parts of town seeing major street construction this
spring and summer.
According to city clerk

been installed and all underground work is complete in the 11 blocks of
streets of Truman. Street
grading, curb and gutter,
sidewalks, blacktopping
and sodding still need
to be completed before
the October 15th project
deadline.

out to visit us, most of my

So, whenever any of our
nieces and nephews come
to visit, that is the most use
they get for long periods
of time. So, when Chase
asked to go for a ride on
my grandfather’s tractor
(a 1971 John Deere 3020)
last Saturday evening, I
figured it would be a good
time to go for a tractor ride
over to visit our neighbors
and relatives, Ted and
Opal Kittleson. Ted was a
first cousin to my grandfather and we have known
the family for many years.
When we arrived at the
Kittleson homestead, Ted
was sitting on his little Allis Chalmers tractor and
belly mower, enjoying the
cool shade. When he saw
us, the first thing he said
was that we all needed to
go on a ride in his old Ford
their bean fields in the past
couple weeks and have
found a healthy infestation of soybean aphids on
the plants. Those aphids
tend to feed on the plants
and remove much of the
nutrients needed for the
soybeans to produce their
bounty. Because of the
infestation, many farmers have taken to the fields
with sprayers to eradicate
the pests. One of the ways
to spray the fields is to
hire “crop dusters”, which
are the small airplanes
that are fitted with tanks
and spray equipment to
spray the fields from the
air. Last Saturday we had
a “birds-eye” view of how
a crop duster works when
our neighbor had his bean
field sprayed. It is amazing
how much skill is required
to spray these fields! In our
neighbor’s bean field, one

we know that the Martin

be the 150th Annual Martin County Fair. There will
be many of the things you
come to expect from the

it is the 150th this year,
there are many new additions to the fairgrounds
and also to the activities that take place at the
fair. Over the next couple

be bringing you stories of
what is happening at the

With the choice
of having a child walk alone or chauffeuring them a
short distance into the traffic congestion at school,
the Walking School Bus is a dream come true.
The Fairmont Safe Routes to School (SRTS) youth
meet Tuesday mornings at five different drop stations: Bird Park, Aquatic Park, Holden Park, Grace
Lutheran Church and Salvation Army lot. Children
may be dropped off at these points or anywhere
along the routes to either the parochial schools or
Fairmont Elementary school. Along the way, kids
can be active with friends and find safety in numbers. Each “bus” has one or two adult “drivers” or
chaperones. Parents, grandparents or other community volunteers walk with the students to their designated school. If we get additional chaperones we can
add additional days. That is your call.
This is our fifth year in the program and our numbers are steadily growing. SRTS gives the children
about 30 minutes of activity and makes them more
ready to get on task.

76 Is Just
a Number
Maisie Bentz, Photo Press Reporter - Intern
Track and field is a typical sport for students in
high school to participate
in. But for most 76 year
olds, it’s not particularly a
first choice when discovering a favorite pastime.
Sherwood Sagedahl, however, is one 76-year-old
who found that running is
just his cup of tea.
Sagedahl worked as
a counselor at Fairmont
High School before retiring in 1997. When he was
in high school, track was
never a priority of his.
“You’re in a small town
and in those days it was
football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and
baseball in the spring,”
Sagedahl says. Track was
only something he did if
he had some extra time.
He started to get into running at age 60 through
the encouragement of his
kids, and ran with local
programs and competitions. In 2005, he started
competing with the National Senior Games Association (NSGA), whose
games were held at Pitts- and Bloomington this year

sports in the NSGA including individual sports, team

Mayo Clinic Health System Q&A
It’s an exciting time
in Martin County as we
gear up for the 2015 Martin County Fair. We’re
happy to have a presence
at Minnesota’s Other Big
Fair, and we look forward
to seeing you there. On
top of that, we’re counting down the days to the
start of construction on
the Emergency Department expansion. Lots of
good things have been
happening at the medical center and in the
community, so thank you
for the ongoing support.
Now, let’s address this
month’s questions.
Q: Are there any staffing updates?
A: John Alm, D.O.,
has joined Mayo Clinic
Health System to provide
physical medicine and rehabilitation services. Dr.
Alm will be in Fairmont
twice a week, Tuesdays
and Thursdays, starting
Aug. 20th. He will focus
on non-operative orthopedics, bone care, sports
injuries, spinal damage,
stroke
rehabilitation,
chronic pain, injections
and therapy.
Dr. Alm attended medical school at A.T. Still University – Kirksville College
Osteopathic
Medicine
in Kirksville, Missouri.
Additionally, he holds a
Master’s in Health Care
Administration. Dr. Alm
has particular interests
in sports medicine, musculoskeletal injuries, and
concussion and brain injury.
Jessica Julig-Weedman,
nurse practitioner, and
Heidi Stevermer, nurse
practitioner, are the newest members of the local
family medicine department. Jessica will start in
September and Heidi in
October. We look forward
to Jessica and Heidi joining our team. We’ll share
more information on
these expert providers in
the coming months.

Here’s a review and
some additional info
about Top 20 Training:
• Top 20 Training has
trained over 500,000
teachers, students, parents, coaches, and businesses throughout the
United States. Top 20’s
mission is to empower
both youth and adults to
make a positive difference
in the quality of their lives,
relationships and experiences.
• Top 20 Focuses on the
power of making positive
choices – we all have the
choice to choose positive
and hopeful thinking that
is effective and serves us
well (in Top 20 terminology this is called “Above the
Line Thinking”), or we can
choose negative and pessimistic thinking that is ineffective that doesn’t serve
us well called “Below the
Line Thinking”.
• One of the key principles of Top 20 is to Help
Others Succeed! It’s all
about creating an effective and healthy community culture, which is a key
theme for the upcoming
sessions.
• We already have a
great start and strong
community support on
this initiative. Top 20 trainers have trained over 2,500
people in the Fairmont
area including students,
faculty, staff, parents,
coaches, businesses (both
execs and employees),
members of community
organizations, churches,
service clubs, seniors and
retirees. Top 20 Training
Co-founder Paul Bernabei
has stated that Fairmont is
the first Top 20 Community in the nation because
the broad support & commitment in the Fairmont
area.
The Top 20 sessions
and specifically the Community Leadership session which is new fits well
with our focus, which is to
“Help Others to Succeed”
in our community, especially our children. As the
great abolitionist Frederic
Douglas said “It’s easier to
build strong children than
repair broken men.” Walt
Disney often said “Our
greatest natural resource
is the minds of our children”.
The Top 20 committee
strongly believes there is a
great opportunity here in
Fairmont for our leaders to
work together for the benefit of the community. We
believe that if the leaders
of this great community
come together and work
on a common purpose, on
common goals and common objectives for our
community, “The Sky’s the
Limit”.
