August 2009 The The Connection Together everybody accomplishes more The newsletter for the residents of the Johnston Community School District District welcomes new staff Beth Ward Associate Principal For the 2009-2010 school year, Beth Ward will start on a new journey in her career at the Johnston school district as Associate Principal at JMS. Ward began her career at the JCSD in 1997 and during that time has worked as a PE instructor at JMS as well as an assistant varsity coach for softball, volleyball and basketball. Ward, originally from Sigourney, Iowa, now lives in Windsor Heights with her two dogs, Simon & Oliver, and her cat, Windsor. In her spare time, she enjoys simply being outdoors. Ward believes that the district has allowed her to grow in many ways. Ward said, “It is a great school district that provides great opportunities for all to grow professionally and personally.” Voters to decide on “Revenue Purpose Statement” on Sept 8 In 1999, Polk County voters approved a one-cent local option sales tax for school improvements. Last spring, Governor Chet Culver signed into law a repeal of the existing local tax and replaced it with a new statewide version. Because of this change, each school district must re-state how it intends to use the funds and the community must vote on that “revenue purpose statement.” Ankeny, Southeast Polk, Waukee, West Des Moines and other CIML districts have already approved the statement. Johnston Community School District residents will vote on Tuesday, September 8. Fast-growing school districts such as Johnston have relied on the revenue from the one-cent sales tax to build, renovate and improve school buildings. State revenue from property tax sources provides funding for district operations and salaries, but falls far short of being enough to keep up with facilities in this Continued on page 12 Barb Rankin Director of Behavioral Programs & Y-Home Associate Principal Dr. Barb Rankin officially joined the Johnston school district on July 1st and will serve as the Director of Behavioral Programs as well as the Associate Principal for the Youth Homes of Mid- America. Before arriving at the JCSD, Rankin worked at Heartland AEA as a behavior specialist where she often assisted the JCSD. Later she was the coordinator of behavior & autism services. Before leaving, she was the Assistant Director of Special Education. Rankin’s hometown is Pershing, IA, a small town located southeast of Knoxville. She now lives in Bondurant with her husband, Lyle, their son, Colin, and their dog (an Australian shepherd mix) named Buddy. Colin recently graduated from high school and their other son, Cory, is currently working at Wells Fargo and plans to marry in September. In her spare time, Rankin enjoys reading, cooking and quilting. When asked what she thinks of the JCSD, Rankin said, “So far everyone has been welcoming and excited to discuss how this new position will work. I continue to be impressed by the support and involvement of so many local and other service organizations that supplement and complement our work by providing extremely high quality experiences for our students in leadership, service, athletics, music, dance and many other areas. As we continue to move forward, we are developing our curriculum and our learning environment to provide world class experiences for our students. We are committed to refining our instruction to more effectively close the achievement gap between our students. At the same time, we will not close the gap by allowing our highest achieving student’s needs to be unmet. Our instructional improvement plans are designed to create an individual student focus that will push every child to higher achievement. This fall, the district will complete the development of a Long Range Facility Master Plan. This plan will be utilized by the Board of Education and will serve as a blueprint for future facility expansion during the next five years. This coming fall, we anticipate again another year of increased student growth. As with any growth, there will be continuing needs related to finances, facilities and personnel. With tighter state budgets and the current economic downturn – the district anticipates significant challenges this coming year. I am honored to work with a school district that puts students first. With the continued support of our parents and community, our school district will continue to enjoy the great reputation we have come to know. It will also be a place where parents want to send their children to learn. We should be extremely proud of our schools here in Johnston. At the same time, our work is not done. We will push forward to propel each student to higher levels of achievement. We welcome any suggestions, ideas, concerns and opinions you have on how we might make the Johnston Community School District a better place for the students we serve. By everyone communicating and working together, we will continue to make a positive difference for our students. Our children deserve the best. During the 2009-2010 school year, educators, students and parents alike have much to look forward to in the area of literacy. Johnston teachers and students will begin using our newly adopted Reading/Language Arts curriculum materials. For the past two years, Johnston teachers have carefully aligned our district standards and benchmarks to the Iowa Core Curriculum, mandated by the Iowa Department of Education. Teachers also met with many curriculum vendors and reviewed the various literacy materials from each company. Their goal in this material review process was to determine which curriculum series would best align with our district standards and benchmarks and meet the needs of our students. As a result of this large-scale process, the Literacy Curriculum Committee selected curriculum materials that will help provide better consistency in teaching and learning across the district. Teachers will now have common materials from which to plan lessons and matching assessments to monitor student progress. In addition to quality teaching and new materials, our students will have equitable opportunities to exciting and meaningful learning experiences. The use of the following literacy series will begin at the start of our 2009-2010 school year: • K-6 – Treasures from Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Being a Writer from Developmental Studies Center • 7-9 – McDougal Littell Literature Series The high school English department has restructured the format of courses offered so that reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing are integrated within each course. This is a change from each area of literacy being taught separately and in isolation. This integrated approach will better prepare our students for future opportunities. Teachers will use various novels, informational texts and technical resources that appropriately align to the themes of each course offered. Teachers have participated in two professional development days this summer to learn the new series that will be implemented this coming school year. Many have stated that they are excited to begin using the new materials. District prepares to celebrate 100 years by Nancy Buryanek, Director of Johnston Community Education In April of 1914, the first school board meeting was held for “The Independent Consolidated School District of Webster and Jefferson Townships of Polk County Iowa.” Four rural schoolhouses including Valley Grade School (located one mile east of present Lawson Elementary); Friars Grade School (located one quarter mile west of the present high school); Ridgedale Grade School (located across from Hyperion); and Rider School (located in the far southwestern corner of the present school district) joined together to form a new school system. That school system is now the Johnston Community School District. The district will be celebrating its 100-year anniversary during the 2013-2014 school year and a steering committee has started to meet and plan ways to “Celebrate and Educate-100 Years of Excellence in Education.” If you as an individual, family, organization or business would like to be involved in this celebration, please contact Nancy Buryanek at Johnston Community Education at 278-0552. August 2009 7 The Connection Infinite Campus - Information Portal by Ann Wiley, Instructional Technology Coordinator The Johnston Community School District uses Infinite Campus as our Student Information System. Infinite Campus is a webbased system that can be accessed by parents for information regarding their students. Secondary students have accounts that give them access to their own individual information. Staff members use Infinite Campus for student demographic information and the online grade book. The student and parent portion of Infinite Campus is called the “Portal.” Students and parents have individual accounts to access the portal. Student accounts only allow the viewing of the individual student’s information while the parent account may view all students in the household. Infinite Campus accounts used last school year continue this school year. Parent portal accounts remain valid until parents no longer have students enrolled in the district. So, once usernames and passwords have been set up, they are valid until enrollment ceases. Information about Infinite Campus and its features will be included in the summer mailings. For parents who have not set up an Infinite Campus account, account activation keys will be included in the informational letter. Secondary students will need to use Infinite Campus to view their grades, as most teachers do not post grade information in classrooms. During the school year, students in grades 9-11 will also use Infinite Campus to register for classes for the following school year. Secondary students will receive account information in their homeroom/seminar classes. Student accounts are valid until the student is not enrolled in the district. Student login information used last year continues this year. Elementary students do not use Infinite Campus like the secondary students; therefore will not receive student account login information. Parents of elementary students will receive account login information. Viewable Portal information for elementary students includes: attendance, fees, and schedule. Infinite Campus fosters communication between our schools and students/parents. One of the communication tools in Infinite Campus includes Teacher Messenger, which is available for staff to use. Teacher Messenger provides staff with the ability to post messages to the portal and the option to send messages to registered e-mail addresses. To ensure that you receive an e-mail message, your e-mail address must be entered into the portal in the ‘Change Contact Info’ settings. Please note that messages sent via the Teacher Messenger are sent from a generic account and replies to that account will not be answered. Parents are encouraged to be conscientious about sending e-mail messages to teachers because it is difficult to reply to large volumes of e-mail in a timely manner. How can I change my email address record? A. Email addresses can be changed from the Change Contact Info link (left frame). Q. What causes an account to get disabled? A. Accounts are disabled when there are three miskeyed attempts at logging into the account. This is for security reasons. Please contact the building account contact to have the account set as active again. Q. If I have some information that is not correct, how do I get it updated? A. Click on the Family Link (left frame) to see demographic information. This information can be updated at the school level; contact the school building office staff. Q. If I have questions about grades, attendance or fees, whom do I contact? The course teacher should address grade questions. The school level office should address attendance and fee questions. Congratulations to the Summit 7th Grade Band performed at the Adventureland Festival of Bands on May 1 and were awarded the “Runner Up” trophy for the weekend. FOREIGN LANGUAGE Congratulations to several French I and II students at JMS who took the National French Exam in March. One student placed in the top ten in the state of Iowa. Ninth grader Kaitlyn Aldrich competed in the State French Speaking Contest on April 18 at Central College in Pella. Felicitations, Kaitlyn! H I S T O R Y D AY Johnston Middle and High School Schools combined efforts to have numerous students qualify for the state contest. The district History Day event held on April 1 and 2, 2009 at the State Historical Building of Iowa. Over 500 students from the area competed in the event. Besides qualifying for the state competition, some received special awards. Students were coached by Extended Learning Coordinator/Middle School teacher Kathy Paul and Extended Learning Teacher at the HS, Sue Cline. Senior division state qualifiers included; Historical Paper category - Amber Solberg, 10th grade, and Ben Parsons, 9th grade; Group exhibit category- Grant McDonald and Chase Wallace, 9th grade; Group Documentary category-Taylor Mithelman and Helen Lagerblade (special award for best use of primary sources), 9th grade; Web site category- Kaitlyn Aldrich and Sam Sparland, 9th grade. The students will advance to the senior level state contest on April 27, also held at the Historical Building. Others who participated included Elizabeth Mills, (special award for outstanding use of local topic) 9th grade with an individual performance. For their exhibit, Jaihui Huang and Zea Zhu, (finalist in category) 8th grade, Ryan Danielson and Ian Dunshee (finalist in category), 9th grade, Joy Tan, 9th grade, and Lin Zhang (finalist in category), 11th grade. Bailey Eppard, Courtney Norelius and Hannah Soyer (special award for creative costumes and finalist in category) in 8th grade presented a group performance; Conner Jacobsen, 8th grade, presented an individual documentary and Shae Atterberg, 10th grade, entered the historical paper category (special award for outstanding use of local topic). Johnston students captured the second place school award at the Senior Division State History Day held at the State Historical Building on April 27. All eight of the Johnston students received awards for their research projects on the theme “The Individual in History.” Tenth grader Amber Solberg won a savings bond for outstanding research and excellent narrative for her paper on Simon Wisenthal. Freshman Ben Parsons won the Literature in History Award for his paper on Edgar Allen Poe, Sam Sparland and Kaitlyn Aldrich were finalists in the Web site category with an entry on Walt Disney. Four 9th graders and two 7th graders advanced to National History Day in June 14-18 in College Park, Maryland. Seventh grade students are John Koopal and Andrew Boge who did an exhibit on Dr. Seuss. Ninth grade students are Grant McDonald and Chase Wallace who won with their exhibit on the Red Baron and Helen Lagerblade and Taylor Mithelman will compete at nationals with their documentary on photographer Margaret Bourke-White. The four 9th grade students also advanced last year in the junior division. Their teacher is Kathy Paul. L I T E R AT U R E Congratulations to Elizabeth Mills, JMS ninth grader, who competed in the Iowa Center for the Book’s Letters about Literature competition and won first place in level three, grades nine through twelve. There were 311 entries total and the Iowa Center for the Book recognized 21 semi-finalists and a first, second and third place winner. Elizabeth was the winner overall for level three, which means she beat out upperclassmen juniors and seniors to earn this honor. M AT H / S C I E N C E Congratulations to Kerrick Staley who qualified to take the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). Kerrick was the first Central Academy student to EVER qualify to take this highly prestigious exam at the end of the month. The USAMO is a six question, two day, nine hour essay/proof examination. Congratulations to Vickie McCool, Director of Special Education, who received the Friend of Youth Award at the 65th Annual Meeting of Youth Homes of Mid-America. The Friend of Youth Award recognizes individuals that exemplify the mission and spirit of Youth Homes of Mid-America. The awards were for the 2008 Johnston Community Education Summer Brochure, a Johnston Community Education postcard advertisement, the Johnston Blaze Swim Club logo and the district Web site. TECHNOLOGY Congratulations to the Beaver Creek Jr. Webmasters who participated in the ITEC Student Technology Fair on April 14 in Ames. Their project won a blue ribbon as the best project in their age category and also received a purple ribbon as one of the best overall projects at the technology fair. The following Beaver Creek fifth grade students serve as the Jr. Webmasters: Alissa Coyle, Allexis Mahanna, Lizzy Salmon, Seth Tack and Anna Toot. They created an iMovie entitled “A Glance Back: Beaver Creek History.” The students used old photos and interviewed staff members who were in the district at the time that Beaver Creek was designed and built. Projects in the Johnston Community School District that have been funded entirely by the one-cent sales tax include Horizon Elementary building and the addition to Beaver Creek kitchen/ cafeteria. The one-cent sales tax, along with physical plant equipment levy revenues, were used to construct Summit Middle School. The revenues from the one-cent sales tax were used to offset the property tax obligations from the 36.5 million bonds issued for construction of Timber Ridge Elementary, purchase of land, additions to Johnston Middle School, Johnston High School, Lawson Elementary, and transportation support facility. This vote does not determine whether the tax will go into effect. The law has already been passed and signed. The sales tax will be collected statewide regardless of its use or the outcome of this vote. August 2009 Passage allows the school board to use the funds for items such as: • property tax relief • purchase or build and furnish new school buildings • remodel, repair, expand and improve existing buildings • establish and maintain public recreation places and playgrounds • community education purposes • help retire general obligation bonds The complete language of the revenue purpose statement may be found on the district Web site. Failure to pass the statement denies the school district the ability to use sales tax funds to build or renovate schools and could result in further overcrowding. Passage requires a simple majority. Prepare your child for school General reminders for the years prior to kindergarten Provide your child with time, availability, and love. You have many demands on your time and may live in a rushed and time-pressured world. It may be hard to turn off the pressures once at home. Yet your child’s self-confidence and motivation to succeed and to respond to challenges can be enhanced if he knows you are available for the moments when he feels fragile and needs comfort. He also needs to feel important enough to you to share his everyday accomplishments and wonder about the world. Availability, nurturing, and support take time and are ideally provided without other preoccupations. Kind words are important. We learn best by doing. Your child learns best about concepts like the number five by counting five crayons or raisins rather than from a verbal explanation. Likewise, he will learn how to say “thank you” from reinforcement and reminders at the appropriate moments (e.g., when being given a cookie) rather than from a speech about manners. Repetition works. Skills are habits that take time to form and are acquired best through reasonable repetition. Your child’s motivation is increased when her efforts are rewarded by kind, encouraging words, even if she did not succeed. Showing disappointment in a harsh way when your child’s efforts are unsuccessful may make her unwilling to try again. Value questions. Don’t push. Make learning a joy. Introduce new skills naturally in small doses, making them fun through conversations and play. If learning a new skill is not fun for your child, it is likely that you are trying too hard or that the skill is too difficult for her to master at this point. Come back to it at a later time. Small surprise rewards are helpful. They reinforce learning. They are not bribes, because your child receives them after the accomplishment, not before. Often, questions take more initiative and are more beneficial than answers. Praise your child for asking questions. It’s OK if you don’t know the answers. You can try to find the answer together with your child (e.g., by looking a word up in the dictionary).
