Tools to Mobilize
your Learning
David Metcalf,
University of Central Florida
March 11 - 13, 2009
Orlando, FL
Agenda
A wide variety of tools and technologies are available for
m-Learning. Cell phones (of all ages and vendors), PDAs,
and iPods, are just a few learning delivery options. This
session will show you the technology and tool categories
available, the types of m-Learning that work best on
different platforms, examples and case studies of how
these technologies have been used, and the costs in time,
money, and staffing needed to implement each major
segment.
Tools and Technologies
for Mobile Learning
In this session you will discover:
ƒFrameworks and processes for delivery
ƒHigh-level examples of mLearning
ƒThe breadth of mobile tools available and select examples
ƒShare your mobile learning projects and compare with
others

Agenda
Where does mobile fit into your overall
learning strategy? We’ll examine trends in
devices, services, and methodologies, and
review sneak previews and current examples
that point to future advances. In this
session, we will discuss issues facing the
rollout of mobile solutions as part of a
blended learning strategy and:
ƒIntroduce m-learning and good practices.
ƒShowcase leading edge examples.
ƒDiscuss future trends.
ƒHighlight key issues in this emerging
technology discipline

ƒ Note: By “reliable connectivity” we mean connectivity that
you expect given shortcomings of your travel area’s mobile
and broadband infrastructure. The Guild recognizes that
individuals may not have persistent nor fast connectivity
(especially in the U.S.), but if these shortcomings are
expected, then corporations and learning professionals can
work around them. We will explore this indepth later on.

What is Mobile Learning
(m(m-Learning)? Guild Definition
ƒ The eLearning Guild defines Mobile Learning (mLearning) as follows:
ƒ Any activity that allows individuals to be more
productive when consuming, interacting with, or
creating information, mediated through a compact
digital portable device that the individual carries on a
regular basis, has reliable connectivity, and fits in a
pocket or purse.

Wikipedia Definition
M-learning is the term given to the delivery of
training by means of mobile devices such as
Mobile Phones, PDAs and digital audio players,
as well as digital cameras and voice recorders,
pen scanners etc. M-learners are seeking
lessons in small, manageable formats that they
can undertake when it suits them.
