We hope you enjoy your visit and make it a tradition for years to come. If you are a local, we hope this Lake Anna Life finds a place on the coffee table and makes you proud of your community. Lake Anna Life is our attempt to capture the lifestyle of lake living as well as showcase the essence of what makes the area so special, not only to our visitors but to those Lakers that call LKA home. Between our covers you’ll find so many things to do here, you’ll probably need several years to accomplish them. And by then, we’ll have even more for you to try! If you are a long time visitor or a local, you know the lake has grown incredibly in just the past 12 months. Many new commercial businesses now operate, grateful for local patronage as well as that of our seasonal tourists. While all this development is part of the inevitable evolution of Lake Anna, let’s not forget what brought us all to the lake to start – the ability to get away from it all, the quiet coves, the hoot of an owl at dusk, the silent splendor of spring dogwoods and redbuds along the shore, the clear water great for swimming, snorkeling, watersports and fine fishing. I hope you can see how passionate we are about LKA and showcasing it properly to the world. It’s a job we take seriously, and as life long publishers professionally. Don’t forget you can read Lake Anna Life online where ever you are at www. lakeannalife.com. There’s an electronic version of the magazine there, Facebook link, and other links to great blogs, activities and much more. From all of us here at Lake Anna Life, I thank you for your visit if you have traveled to the lake and also thank our local readers/businesses for your support. Enjoy the Lake Anna Life this year! Creating the lake was accomplished by building a 90-foot high earth and rock dam on the North Anna River near Bumpass. Careful planning by engineers expected the creation of a 17-mile long Lake Anna west of the dam after about two years of regular rainfall and run off. Would be LKAer’s didn’t have to wait that long, though. Mother Nature intervened with Hurricane Agnes in June of 1972 and 12 inches of rain fell in the water shed. Lake Anna was created about one-and-ahalf years early with 225 miles of lake front property and approximately 13,500 acres ready to be explored. The down lake section of Lake Anna begins at the dam and runs back to the power station across from the mouth of Sturgeon Creek. It is characterized by clear water, shallow coves and little commercial development. Welcome To 40 Years Of Fun The mid lake region is the section from the power plant back up to The Splits where the North Anna River arm (approximately 8 miles) and Pamunkey Branch (approximately six miles) diverge. This part of Lake Anna is known for deep, clear water, much of the State Park land, Contrary Creek and most of the commercial businesses that operate on the lake. Head past The Splits in either arm and you are in the up lake region. Here you’ll find some agricultural land use, shallower water, water willow grass, some commercial businesses and the headwaters of the lake. Also in 1972, work began on the acquisition and development of a water-oriented state park. Lake Anna State Park opened in 1983 on the north shore of the Pamukey Branch just above The Splits as the culmination of these efforts. Several bridges cross the North Anna River and Pamunkey Branch in the up lake region. Most boats are able to cruise under these bridges offering unlimited access to the When Hurricane Agnes blew through central Virginia in the summer of '72 and 12 lakeannalife.com 2012 main lake. The main bridge for Route 208 (New Bridge), approximately one mile below The Splits, is the only bridge that crosses the lower side of the lake. All over the main lake there are hundreds of little coves that provide nearly endless opportunities to explore and more room for boating, recreation and lake communities. For the purpose of cooling the warm water discharged from the power plant, without affecting the main portion of the lake, Lake Anna was designed with two navigable parts, the public and private (warm) side. This was accomplished by building dikes across the mouth of the first three tributaries from the dam, on the south shore. Each of these tributaries were then inter-connected by canals to dispense the warm waters throughout all of them, eventually returning the cooled water to the main lake at Dike III. The warm side of the lake also features dozens of quiet coves and lake communities, o The Lake! And Memories... however commercial business is not permitted in this section of Lake Anna. You cannot reach the “private” side unless you have access to a boat ramp in one of it’s communities. Together, both sides of Lake Anna creates a one-of-a-kind, highly desirable, 12-month out of the year site for those that enjoy water sports and fishing. In recent years, commercial development of the lake has expanded with a shopping center that includes a national grocery store, Virginia ABC store, restaurants and more. These commercial businesses have greatly expanded Lakers' and visitors' dining and shopping options making for a more complete Lake Anna experience. Any visit to the lake will reveal a vibrant resort setting that swells during The Season (Memorial Day to Labor Day) and beckons to those that do not live here year round in the off season. Come celebrate the 40th anniversary of Lake Anna this year with us and make it a tradition every year afterward. d dumped 14" of rain, Lake Anna was formed... two years ahead of schedule. lakeannalife.com 2012 13 join us for a perfect day on lake anna From sunrise to sunset you can fish, boat, tube, swim, paddle, hike, ride, eat, star gaze and shop.... T By C.C. McCotter The perfect day on Lake Anna starts with a pre-dawn coffee and quick breakfast at one of our great country stores (Elk Creek, New Bridge and Dickinson's), because you need to be in place to greet the sunrise. A fine place to do this is in a boat in the down lake region, right around the island off Tyler Point. From here, you can watch the sun come up over the dam, first with a warm pink/orange glow and then bursting over the horizon and illuminating the lake northwestward back to Old Rag Mountain in the distance. Now it’s time to make a few casts for bass or striper while the morning is calm and quiet. The Dike III region offers great fishing opportunities year-round and is nearby. Once the 10 am hour rolls around, it’s time to stow the rods and join the fun of watersports. Tubing, wakeboarding, water 14 lakeannalife.com 2012 skiing and more are favorites among Lakers and visitors. Find some flat water at the mouth of Valentine's Cove or over near Dike II and have a blast. When you think you can’t take any more, take a break to enjoy that lunch you packed (perhaps the foot-long from Subway?) and pull up at The Bahamas for some beach time, too. Soak your feet or take a dip, the water is clear and clean. This area is located near Boggs Creek, across from the power plant behind the islands. After lunch your can choose to nap and tan (not!) or get back out there and make some wakes. Consider renting a personal watercraft, flying a kite off the back of the boat (or rental pontoon) or just stay put during the heat of the day. Snorkeling is a great way to enjoy an afternoon on the lake. The water is so clear in the lower lake region you can see and feed the fish in many areas! Find a little sandy beach along the shore, anchor the boat and set up the lawn chairs. The old foundation homeplace in front of Peaceable Kingdom offers a fascinating underwater view of the past. Find it and slip on the snorkel masks for some underwater treasure hunting! Once the sun dips, get back in place to look westward as the sun sets below the mountains and Lake Anna’s nightlife begins. Rack the boat and head back to the house for dinner with friends on the dock, porch or at any one of the great restaurant options in the LKA area. (See our LKA Dining Guide on page 46.). You can choose from hibachi grilled items, sushi, sashimi, burgers, sandwiches, local wines, crabcakes, pizza, subs and more. Want something sweet? Try the hand-dipped ice cream at paddle Start with the sunrise and don't stop going until your head hits the pillow. It's the Lake Anna Life. Elk Creek or Dickinson's Country Stores. Elk Creek's Sweet Spot offers frozen yogurt and soft serve as does New Bridge Market and Hunter's Landing. After dinner and dessert, it's time to head back to the rental or your own home for an evening on the dock or boathouse with family and friends. The stars do shine brighter here and you can watch for falling stars and listen to whipporwhills or owls as the evening turns into night. If you are up for some real adventure don't go to bed yet... It's now the perfect time to go on a Lake Anna Monster hunt! Grab your flashlight and camera because you might just find what you are looking for and need to document the experience. Don’t stay up too late, because if you’re here for the weekend, you’ve got another day to enjoy! Want to go down the road less traveled? Consider renting a kayak and paddle the more remote sections of the lake like The Sanctuary in the upper North Anna. Paddle from the Rt. 208 marinas and you are within a quarter mile of the 1,000 plus acre Lake Anna State Park with plenty of hiking trails, places to swim and quiet, undeveloped coves. Like to shop? Before you head home, check out Lake Anna Outfitters, "The Coolest Little Shop on the Lake". Inside you'll find everything from those LKA stickers to caps and t-shirts, plus art, flags of all kinds, kites and more. Next store in the Anna Point Marina complex you'll find the Lake Country Boating Store, another good option for gifts le, fish, float, eat, relax, boat, monster hunt, sleep and repeat... continued on page 16 lakeannalife.com 2012 15 THE PERFECT DAY on Lake Anna Cabins, Camping & Picnic Shelters Christopher Run Campground and Lake Anna State Park have many options for visitors that want to enjoy the outdoors. The Market draws locals and tourists, and both bring friends. It’s a rare day that you won’t meet or make a friend on a Saturday in Mineral, Virginia. Businesses are noticing increased Saturday traffic, tourism is picking up, and the whole endeavor seems seamless. It might appear that way but actually, market manager Becky Vigon and her committee start working on plans for the upcoming season in November. “I have an awesome committee - two really smart, talented ladies that serve as Mayor and Vice-Mayor of Mineral - plus the Board of Directors of the Mineral Business Association [MBA], which sponsors the Market”, says Vigon. “My ad hoc committee is comprised of “friendors” - real farmers and bakers and artists that I can bounce ideas off of and brainstorm ways to keep our Market uncomplicated and fun.” On any given week there might be giveaways, live music, cooking demonstrations featuring the freshest, seasonal produce, games or contests. There are always MFM coloring books and crayons for the kids, plus Vigon sets up a mini tourism center where visitors can pick up maps, guides and free publications. 24 lakeannalife.com 2012 The Market and the MBA have developed a great working relationship with the Town of Mineral, Louisa County Parks and Recreation, the Virginia Tourism Corporation/Virginia Economic Development Partnership, and the Virginia Department of Agriculture. Vigon focuses on the entire season. Since the Market runs from the first Saturday in May through the last Saturday in October, there are plans for children (think pizza garden, kids planting seeds in the community garden and watching them turn into food, zucchini derby, punkin’ chunkin’ etc....) The theme for the 2012 season is “Growing New Farmers”. Vigon doesn’t care how old you are or how new you are to gardening. If she can’t answer your question directly, she can find someone who will. Good luck trying to catch her, though, she’s a blur of handing out flyers, picking up trash and facilitating relationships. Don’t miss the Mineral Farmer’s Market; located at 81 Louisa Avenue (US 522 N) in Mineral, VA. Directions may be found at their website, www.MineralMarket.org. Here are the most popular features you’ll find around the lake. Walk Out, Fully Finished Basements With even just a little elevation to a lot, a builder can create extra living space, and more recently, a complete entertainment area. Many of these spaces include a bar, entertainment/media room, guest bedrooms, children’s playrooms and storage. It’s not always going to be 85 and sunny at the lake. For those days when it’s not perfect, family and friends hang out when they visit your home? It’s often the kitchen. Lake house layouts that feature kitchens with bars and sightlines right to the lake are very popular. Add a floor plan with a chimney as another focal point and you have a great room with a high cozy factor. Bunk Rooms Many folks remember visiting a lake home when they were young and sleeping “bunkhouse” style. Creating a large room with muliple twin or bunk beds is another trend among lakehome builders that want their children to bring friends and enjoy the lake house they remember. Construction Co. Where do most of your 2012 Hardscaped Lake Viewing Areas There’s nothing like the perfect spot to enjoy the view and a special moment with a loved one. Sunrises, sunsets and just amazing vistas are highlighted by block patios or terraces complimented with some quality Adirondack chairs. There's Only One Name To Remember If You Need Gutter & Roof Work... TIMMY HEIN ilding Trends Home owners can choose from traditional block builder materials or stamped concrete. C3 Concrete’s Curtis Stephian is masterful with his medium - concrete. He designs and creates custom walkways, patios and more for lake clients that want the durability of concrete and a more artisan look. His patterns make concrete look like block. Outdoor Fireplaces/Grills Some of the above viewing areas will also feature hardscaped propane fueled or more traditional wood fueled fire pits. A few feet away some folks will create a built-in place for the gas grill or have a contractor build an outdoor bar-b-que for cooking dining truly al fresco. and Irrigation Systems It’s not illegal to pull water from the lake to water your lawn so it’s no surprise that lake fed irrigation systems are one of the hottest trends around Anna. Dan from Design Landscaping and Irrigation is one of the lake's busiest tradesmen. On most days of the year, he's either installing, designing or maintaining the hundreds of irrigation systems he's done around the lake. New advances in materials and pumps have made this option a major lake home trend and creates some amazing lawns! Beaches Not all properties are wellsuited to the creation of a beach. Some lake properties feature natural swales where lake sand accumulates. Add a hardscaped terrace wall to separate the beach from the lawn and you have your very own Coco Beach. Living The Lake House Dream LAKE ANNA LIFE By Megan Smiley 32 lakeannalife.com 2012 Those fantasizing about where to build their dream home would be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful and lovely location than Lake Anna. With its clear, clean waters, abundant restaurants, plenty of year-round recreational activities and both a resort and full time community atmosphere, Lake Anna is one of Virginia’s most well-loved areas. And, fortunately for people seeking to move here, there is also a multitude of talented and skilled builders on hand to assist in constructing that dream home. Lake Anna Life asked some of these innovative people to offer a few tips to those contemplating a move to the lake. Keeping your budget in mind and being realistic about the potential cost, is one of the first things Lake Anna Dream Home contractors suggest doing when considering building your project. In some cases, it is even suggested that a future Lake Anna homeowner choose a builder, at least on a preliminary basis, BEFORE knowing the price of construction. “It may seem counterintuitive to choose a builder [first]…,” said George Daily of AE Homes LLC, “[but] the planning process is dynamic and having a builder’s assistance from the outset will save time, effort and money.” Daily recommends choosing a builder with whom the client feels comfortable, and who understands the vision and will impartially advise of options throughout the planning process. Jay Scheurenbrand of Plum Tree Properties notes his company works with clients from the initial meeting almost weekly to ensure their vision is realized every step of the way. “Good communication from the start is the way we do business. Establishing this link to the customer saves time and money for everyone.” It is also important to make sure that the builder is, indeed, a custom builder, according to Jean Martin of Southern Image. “Custom builders very seldom build the same home plan repeatedly nor use the same products. That is because the customer primarily designs custom homes. Take a good look at the builder’s portfolio and the homes they have built,” suggests Martin. Experience is also a key component, according to Eric Henry of Spartan Homes, whose company has years of “real world” construction knowledge under its belt. “Nothing beats the experience of building many homes. It prepares the builder to appropriately react to or anticipate the kinds of issues that can affect the quality of work, time of construction and, ultimately, the client’s satisfaction,” added Henry. It is also important point to consider what kind of home can and should be put on the land that a customer owns. “The neighborhood, location and topography all play important roles,” said Andy Datesman CONTINUED ON PAGE 79 "Lake Anna's Premier Custom Home Builder" 2012's #1 Lake Anna Builder! Whether you're searching for a lot, an existing home, or planning to build your own, the realtors featured throughout our pages are a big part of the Lake Anna Life family. Each offer a unique perspective and their own brand of expertise to ease your way. Most of the property owners at Lake Anna purchased here because of a desire to be near the water and what that means to them in terms of lifestyle. The lake has been a draw for folks from many states and almost each and every one of them had the choice to select where they wanted to move to and they chose Lake Anna. Those of us that live here and love it definitely understand why. That tells us a lot about what promises Lake Anna held out to them. Among other things it promised a life on or near the water at prices that are hard to beat elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic area. It encompasses a life that includes water activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, sailing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, and one of the best things of all in my opinion…the sense of peace felt by simply seeing the lake. Lake Anna’s great location, only short distances from Washington, D.C., Richmond, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg and right in the midst of many of our nation’s historical sites, has the best of both worlds and contributes to the decision to relocate here that so many made and others continue to make. By Kate Elim, Realtor Situated in a rural area, life has the quality many long for. We laughingly refer to “Lake Anna Time” but that really does reflect the ease in how we approach time. There’s a friendliness and helpfulness prevalent on the part of folks you meet whether in a local business or in the many neighborhoods surrounding the 13,000 acre lake. Owners have also turned to local REALTORS® to help them when the time came to sell. Sometimes it is parttimers wanting to sell their first Lake Anna property in order to obtain one that will better suit their change to fulltime status. Other times it might be a landowner that decides not to build but elects to search for a re-sale home instead. Whatever the reason, agents have made it happen. Others search the Internet; find a web site that seems to do the best job of answering their questions. The next step is getting in touch with that agent to solicit either additional information on specific properties or general information on the area. Statistics tell us that approximately 83% of buyers begin their search on the Internet. The number has grown dramatically in a relatively short time. As a result many REALTORS® are making sure that their presence is there not only with their own personal web site but also through social media. If this is your first real estate transaction or if it has been some time since you have Worked with a REALTOR® here are some of the things that you may wish to consider when making your choice. How familiar the agent is with the area and with the local real estate market. Lake Anna has its own nuances when it comes to properties. Waterfront and access properties have increased value because of a number of specific attributes. Knowing those attributes and why they are important is very helpful to the consumer. Did you know there are a multitude of Realtor designations recognizing additional training in specific fields. These designations signify that the agent has an interest in learning more than the requirements for licensing and continuing education. Following are a few examples: GRI – Graduate, REALTOR Institute, Accredited Buyer Representative, Resort and SecondHome Specialist, Certified Residential Specialist, SRES – Senior Real Estate Specialist, ePRO – Internet Professional Years of experience that a Realtor has does not necessarily tell you everything, but if often means that there is a familiarity with the transaction process that is not learned overnight. A good Realtor has professionalism, a willingness to listen to your wants and your needs and to address them, is someone that will be there for you not only during the selling or buying process. Your agent can and should be willing to provide assistance following settlement and to continue to serve as a ready resource and the most important quality of all: will be PROTECTING YOUR BEST INTERESTS AT ALL TIMES. Certainly purchasing a property, whether it is a resale home or land so that you can have your new home built, should be a wonderful experience. Your agent should help make it exactly that. Selling your home has stressful moments as well. Once that decision to sell is made determining a realistic price is vitally important. It is extremely hard for many of us to be impartial to the charms and the imperfections of our home. That is especially true when we think about selling it. Often the items needing repairs that bothered us for as long as we owned the place suddenly become insignificant. They are not to prospective buyers. Sellers need to keep an open mind when they seek the advice of a REALTOR®. A good agent will tell you exactly what you need to do to enhance the sale of your property. There are times they may suggest the services of a professional stager. Remember, your REALTOR® should not be getting any type of payment from the stager (unless they have made that arrangement known to you prior to an agreement between you and the stager). Staging definitely has its cost. However, the investment is especially worthwhile when a house needs to be updated and given some needed pizazz. Yes, there’s that word. Not only does that mean your REALTOR® is able to post compelling photos online but potential buyers will also feel it when they walk in the door. We all know that we can only make a first impression one time. Make it count! An investment in staging will often result in a faster sale and a better price…the goal of every seller. This is one of the many ways your REALTOR® can help you. Your local REALTOR® should be able to help you in finding other professionals that will help you through the various processes needed in not only preparing your home for sale but to also guide you through the complete transaction. Throughout the process whether it is a sale or purchase one thing is paramount… your best interest. You deserve nothing less. Many families use the dock/boathouse like a beach. They are there from 9 am until dark, and only come back for lunch and dinner! Tiki bars, roll-up bar windows, covered areas that offer seating at a banquet style table, television, outdoor speakers, climate-controlled sun rooms, screened in rooms, second story sun decks, the list of boat house options is growing each year as builders incorporate the ideas of their clients. Stacey Ramsey, Randy Johnson and Brad Eyler are three of the lake’s top dock/boathouse/ bulkhead builders and they’ve had a busy year keeping up with clients’ projects. If they can dream it up, these three can figure out how to build it. Each man and his crew has its own specialty in addition to the ability to built the standard Lake Anna boat house. Ramsey has an immense red barge you might have seen on the lake. It's called The Enterprise and it can set pilings in deep water. The Captain of The Enterprise also creates water front structure of all kinds, but he specializes in building docks and boat houses over deep water. Creeks on the lake like Contrary that feature steep, channel banks of 30’ or more require specialized pilings. Ramsey’s USS Enterprise dockbuilding barge can set pilings into nearly 40’ of water. “I've made a lot of homeowners happy with our ability to create a dock or boathouse when they thought they had no good options." Johnson works with a number of suppliers to build seawalls, docks and boathouses around the lake. One of the favorite Alpha Land Surveys, LLC Affordable & On Time Scott E. Sun decks are another popular option Johnson has built onto existing docks and added to new boathouses. No matter the plan, you’ll have to run it by Dominion’s Lake Anna liason, Peery Agee. Another fellow that has been setting some market trends recently is Ed Kuhne with Lake Breeze Enclosures. His specialty is taking a dock and creating a four-season space. Imagine watching the Redskin game on your dock and sipping a beverage as the leaves fall! “We take your screened in areas and create living spaces for all seasons using energy efficient materials," Kuhne told Lake Anna Life. Many folks built screened in porches and then want to use them during the fall and winter to entertain guests. With Kuhne's expertise you can be watching football on the flat screen on your dock as the wind blows and rain falls! Stabilizing your valuable shoreline is important. You don’t want to be paying those high waterfront property taxes and loosing a foot a year, right? The days of two options (gray rip rap rock or pressure-treated bulkhead) are over. Contractors are now using rounded, river stones for a more natural look and the rock fits together better. While wooden bulkheads remain popular, newer materials like composites, galvanized steel and even colored nylon offer bulkhead options. “I use the Enterprise and several other pieces of equipment to place rock along clients' shorelines. I also install the best bulkhead materials on the market for high traffic areas on the lake," says Ramsey. Purchasing the right building materials is also critical to ensure the job your builder does lasts. J.S. Purcell Building Supplies in nearby Louisa has been providing options since the lake was created and nearly 100 years prior. Two Lake Anna experts are on staff to work with you and your builder to ensure you get the most options and the most for your money. Lake Anna delivery is part of the J.S. Purcell way, too. Here are Lake Anna Life’s favorite activities according to season. We hope you are already enjoying them or plan to do so soon. Spring This is the time for reawakenings and an early season visit. The lake bursts with spring blossoms in early April and the fishing season kicks into high gear. Anglers vastly outnumber any other user group on the weekends. On some weekdays you might not see five boats, though. They come from all over the east coast to try their luck on Anna with guides and by themselves. Fishing tournaments are held each weekend. The weigh-ins are exciting to attend even if you aren’t fishing. Kayaking is excellent now all over the lake due to the nonexistent boat traffic. Paddle into the remote headwaters of the lake to view nesting great blue herons or explore a quiet State Park creek where purple martins and kingfishers nest naturally. The State Park trail system is all yours and the cool air and budding trees make for a refreshing outing. Try and count the shades of green. We think you’ll give up at 50. Spring Break LKA style in a lakefront rental home has become a popular alternative to for many folks around the region. Activities abound but the summer pace slows now as the change of season arrives. Fall When does the fall officially start on LKA? Locals say the season officially ends after Labor Day, however, true fall probably starts sometime in mid-October when the first hickory turns yellow and the sugar maples flame red. Lakers know the shoreline along the State Park just up from the Route 208 marinas is breathtaking starting in late October. The best way to view it is by boat or kayak. This one mile stretch looks like a painting during the peak leaf view period. The contrast of deep green Virginia pine and multi-colored hardwoods is something you cannot take your eyes from. The Louisa Wine Festival held October13 is another reason to reserve that rental home. The Lake Anna Winter This is the time of year year-rounders enjoy most. Those lucky enough to live full time around Lake Anna know the winter has its own beauty. Anna is nearly empty save for the anglers that once again have the run of the lake. All is quiet as the air temperature drops and a quiet winter blanket covers the region. Snows are infrequent and often greeted with sledding parties and bonfires. Boating, wake boarding, water skiing, hiking the trails at the state park and my favorite... fishing! Every year thousands of families visit Lake Anna to fish. As a fishing guide, I get to spend some of those days on the water with the families. I have had just about every combination that you can imagine: husband/wife, father/son, father/daughter, mother/son and even a mother/daughter trip. Not to mention the countless nieces, nephews and sibling outings. Lake Anna fishing brings families together. There is nothing better than spending time with your family. 52 lakeannalife.com 2012 I spend as much time as possible with my Dad and daughters as I can on the water. Virginia is a great place to fish with many choices, and Lake Anna should be at the top of your list. Our clear, clean waters teem with fish of many species. And remember on any family fishing trip, catching fish is a bonus! The memories are what you're really after, those hours that you can’t get back once you are gone. There is nothing better for me than seeing a youngster catch his/her first fish or seeing an adult catch the largest fish of their life. Those are memories that will be etched in your brain forever. You might not remember anything else that happened that day, but you will ALWAYS remember that. I have had children catch their first fish with me as well as some MLAGS photos Fish On! Guides can put your family on fish while teaching you how to find them. adults. I have had anglers catch their largest bass with me here on Lake Anna after fishing all over the country. If you get the opportunity to take a family member fishing this year, please do so. Take a kid fishing, take an adult fishing or just take someone that is really close to you. The fishing really picks up in March and lasts all the way through early winter. Although you can catch fish year round on Lake Anna, the spring and fall are the best times to be on the water. If you do not own a boat there are still options to get a day of fishing in. There are several boat rentals on the lake. First Mates, located at Anna Point Marina rents pontoon boats that are large enough for the entire family. One of the biggest family fishing events on the lake happens over at Anna Point Marina. The first Saturday in May they host their annual Youth Fishing Tournament. There are three age classes for the young anglers to compete in 5-9, 10-12, 13-17. They fish from 8 am until noon and have a cookout and award ceremony afterwards. Get in touch with Dave Fauntleroy or Chris Craft for more details. 540-895-5900. Another major, annual family fishing tradition are the Friday Night Tournaments held out of High Point Marina from June through August. Savvy guides now blog about each day they are on the water. You can read how they are catching bass, striper and crappie and often glean enough information to target the right area at the right time. Emailing a guide for information is a possibility, but realize if you are not a paying customer you are asking for free product. You might also call one of the marinas around the lake and ask them what lures are selling and how the fish are biting. While it’s not a sure bet, you do have good odds to catch all three in one day, if you know where to look. Here are some annual patterns you might find helpful during your visit. Crappie invade the shallow coves and shores of the lake usually around the end of March. First they feed and then they spawn. Spawning takes place over the course of a month or so throughout the lake, with the up lake fish finishing last. Once the crappie complete the spawning ritual they will move out to structure in deeper water like the ends of docks, brush piles, rocks and bridge pilings. They will move progressively deeper as the water warms into the summer. By late September, they will come back to the docks one more time before overwintering once again in deep water. A Virginia citation crappie is 15” or two pounds. Largemouth bass fishing on the lake has been consistently good for many years. It’s not uncommon to catch a bucketmouth weighing five to six pounds at any time of the year. Like crappie, largemouths move shallow to spawn in the spring, usually by mid April. At this time you can spot them on their beds and sight fish for them, casting lures. Once the spawn is over the bass will leave the shallows to recover then return and feed heavily into June. This is a great time to use a topwater plug to catch a big bass. In the summer, many largemouth’s seek refuge from the heat. You’ll find Striper, them in the willow grass lines in the upper end of the lake or on deep structure in areas where the water is clear and deep. By September, they are back in the shallows in great schools and feeding on herring or shad before moving offshore into deep water winter haunts. Vertical jigging for them is most productive November through January. A Virginia citation largemouth is 22 inches or eight pounds. The striped bass (a.k.a. – striper or rockfish) that are stocked into the lake each year are the same fish that inhabit the Chesapeake Bay. Each year over 180,000 striper fingerlings are released into Lake Anna. In about four years they reach “keeper” size of 20” and top out around four pounds. Anglers have caught striper up to 26 pounds from the lake, though the average fish is about six pounds. You can cast to them with artificial lures, pull live baits and even bottom fish with cut bait. The top fake offerings are a Zara Spook topwater, a swimbait, a multi-arm rig and a spoon. Live bait anglers will use blue back herring and gizzard shad caught from the lake with a cast net when possible. Jumbo minnows are worth trying, too, if you cannot catch your own bait. LKA Hat Trick... crappie and largemouth in one day. nna Hat Trick Crappie All In One Day .... Striper make an annual run into the upper end of the lake in both the North Anna River branch and Pamunkey Branch of the lake. They feed in shallow water often from the end of February until May and spawn sometime in April/ May. Once they spawn, the fish migrate back down into the mid lake region and remain there for most of the summer. In the fall they move up lake a bit and intercept large schools of threadfin shad. By winter, they are mostly back into the mid lake region. The Dike III region also draws striper, especially when the temperature differential from “hot” side to “cold” side is greatest. The VDGIF maintained Anglers’ Catwalk at the Dike is the best place to fish from the bank on the entire lake. So let’s say you land a whopper bass, striper or crappie, what next? To certify a trophy catch, take it alive to a marina where they will weigh and witness it. If you have a trophy, the marina will provide a citation form you can mail to the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries (along with a check for $4) to receive your citation form suitable for framing. So where does one find out more about fishing Lake Anna? Marinas around the lake cater to anglers eight months out of the year. They want you to catch fish, purchase lures and live bait, so the advice they offer on where-to-go and howto is a good place to start. Marina websites and blogs can be good sources of information for Lake Anna fishing. See the list of good ones at the end of this article. Our list of the year's t Chuck Meeks Co-Owner, Anna Point So what does a former corporate executive do for fun? He buys a marina and starts selling boats. That exactly what Chuck Meeks did a number of years back when he and partner Al Gajarsky purchased Anna Point Marina. Since then (coinciding with the economic downturn) Chuck and Al have been on a tear of changing the ways things are done at APM. New for 2012 was the hiring of Dave Fauntleroy and Chris Craft at what is now called Fish Tales (the old Shore Store). This duo completely remodeled the on-the-water shop into an LKA Must-Do destination during your stay, even if you're not (yet) a fisherman. Chuck also took over the boat sales duties developing Lake Country Marine into the largest boat dealership on Lake Anna. Along the way he acquired some of the top brands in the boat business including Hurricane, Aqua Patio, Ski Centurion, Yamaha WaveRunner, Bryant, Malibu, San Pan and Sweetwater. The marina’s boating supply store is second to none with Jill Gajarski at the helm. If a boater on the lake needs something, The Boat Store is likely to have it! And if that wasn’t enough, Chuck and Jill collaborated to create the brand new WakeAnna Surf & Ski shop now open at Anna Point selling top of the line water skis, wakeboards, wake surfboards, marine stereos and great clothing. They even have a unique Airhead Lounge! Whew! Old Chuck really moves! His wife Jan operates the First Mates jet ski and pontoon boat rental business at the marina. Linda Salisbury Author When Lake Anna’s own Linda Salisbury started writing The Wild Women of Lake Anna, just before her retirement in 2003 from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, she had no idea that this children’s book would receive national recognition, and would be the first in an award-winning series that put the region on the map long before the 2011 earthquake. Adults and children around the country are reading the Bailey Fish Adventure series and are learning about Lake Anna and Virginia. “Lake residents tell me that they often give copies to friends and family, and keep a set for themselves,” Salisbury said. The earthquake has inspired the ninth book in the series for boys and girls, ages 8-12. Titled Earthquake Surprise, it has an expected summer 2012 release. The series involves 11-year-old Bailey Fish, who moves to the lake to live with her wise and wonderful grandmother, Sugar (one of the family’s inspirational Wild Women). Her single-parent mother, Molly, is a writer who is off on a “dream” job in Costa Rica. As the series progresses, her best friends are the Keswick “twins,” Noah and Fred who are adopted brothers, their foster sister, Sparrow, Justin Rudd, an enigmatic neighborhood boy, and members of Bailey’s family she didn’t know about. Although the books are sequential, they can be read in any order. Schools and homeschools also appreciate the discussion questions, glossary, maps and photos,” she said, noting that she really enjoys presenting assemblies and workshops at schools all over the country. She also speaks to clubs and groups. And the books have drawn for tourists to the lake area. They tell her that they have visited Lake Anna State Park, looked for Contrary Creek, driven to Mineral and Louisa and even launched boats to see what Bailey and Sugar describe on the lake. “I’ve even had readers tell me that they have driven around and know exactly where Sugar lives,” said Salisbury, laughing. “However, I have been inspired by abandoned houses, people I’ve met or observed, and keep notebooks so that I can accurately describe what happens during various seasons here.” Ash Dickinson Dickinson's Store This is one of our younger Most Influential LKAers but he's on track to play a major role in many of our lives. Lake Anna Tubing Club members must be considered, too. Perhaps paddling is what you want to get into this season? Well, there really are plenty of boat options for the Lake Anna enthusiast depending on your area of interest. Let’s run down some of the top options according to the lake’s marine dealers that tend to see buying trends and favorites well-suited for LKA. 60 lakeannalife.com 2012 Runabouts This is the word used to describe the majority of the pleasure boats used on Lake Anna. You’ll find everything from Stingrays to Hurricanes featuring a fairly deep-v hull design with plenty of seats, some in the bow, for passengers. Runabouts are mostly powered by stern drive motors. Unlike an outboard marine engine, the engine block on a stern drive is housed inside the hull, usually in the middle of the stern. The business end of the motor, the propeller and lower unit stick out from the stern. Jet drive runabouts are a relatively new category of boat that have quickly gained in popularity around Anna. These craft are powered by water jet engines that suck in lake water and “jet” it out via a powerful impeller and nozzle. Some top-of-the-line jet drive boats feature twin engines that produce over 300 hp. Here is a short checklist courtesy of the Lake Anna Coast Guard Auxliary, Flotilla 87 to make sure you are prepared for a safe and enjoyable boating season. You must have the boat registration card or a “temporary” registration on the vessel before your boat or PWC may be legally operated on Virginia waterways. Validation decals are furnished with each three-year registration issued by the VDGIF. These decals must be on your boat and indicate the month and year of expiration and the registration number assigned to your vessel. Nearly all boating related fatalities are the result of drowning. It is estimated that over 80% of fatalities could have been prevented if a properly fitted life jacket had been worn. There must be one properly fitted wearable (Type I, II, III or V) US Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person on board. This is the time to check your life jackets to make sure they are in good condition and meet the needs of those that are usually on board your vessel. Remember, inflatable life jackets are lightweight, comfortable to wear and take up about 10% of the storage room of the conventional continued on page 63 powered by outboard engines but some of the larger offer stern drive options. Four-stroke outboards have become the most popular option due to the nearly zero emissions (think no stinky blue smoke), quiet operation, good mid-range power and excellent fuel/oil economy. You can set up a pontoon for cruising or for fishing. Many layouts are available depending on your need. Dee Kidd at Anna’s Marina Center sells the popular line of Bennington and SunTracker pontoons. He says a pontoon is perfect for the retired couple with grandchildren or the family that likes to fish and to cruise. “Most of our pontoons are sold to a client that enjoys Lake Anna at a leisurely pace and has plenty of family that accompanies them on weekends and in the summer.” continued on page 62 lakeannalife.com 2012 61 Which Boat Is Right For You? Wakeboard and ski boats feature torqueladden inboard engines mounted inside the hull and a keel drive propeller and rudder system. The boats ride low in the water and can turn as if on a track due to keel fins and a rudder. On board tanks can be pumped full of water allowing the deep hull to displace even more water creating a wake of nearly three feet for high acrobatics. continued on page 64 62 lakeannalife.com 2012 Boating Safety jackets. So, it is totally irresponsible not to wear a life jacket and insist that your passengers wear a life jacket while underway! Check your life jackets for deterioration that could diminish the performance of the life jacket. Also, make certain your boat has a Type 4, Throwable Flotation Device which is ‘immediately available” and can be quickly reached in an emergency. You must have a US Coast Guard approved fire extinguisher on board that it is adequately charged and is mounted where it is readily accessible. Before your first outing, it’s a good idea to clean your “backfire" flame arrestor and make sure your battery is charged and the positive battery terminal is covered. Also, check your horn and running lights to ensure they are working properly even if you do not plan to boat after sundown. Legally, these must be in good working condition. Last, but not least, check your bilge. Make sure it is dry and clear of grease. Boat with confidence knowing that your boat and its equipment meet state and federal safety requirements. A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is a good idea. It’s a free check of your boat or PWC to make sure that the required safety equipment is on board and in good condition. The Auxiliary Vessel Examiner is a trained specialist who will also make certain recommendations and discuss certain safety issues that will make you a safer boater. The VSC is not a law enforcement inspection. We will supply you with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow some of the suggestions given. Vessels that pass will be able to display our distinctive VSC decal. This does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be prepared to make this a positive encounter. Interested? Try a virtual VSC to understand what is covered. Afterwards, request an actual VSC from one of our examiners. You can find links to the Virtual VSC Information and "I want a VSC" links on the Flotilla 87’s webpage www.a0540807.uscgaux.info. Your boat can be checked at Flotilla 87’s VSC stations held at different Lake Anna marinas on Saturdays during the boating season from 10 AM - 2 PM, weather and resources permitting. Check our VSC Calendar on our website at www.a0540807.uscgaux.info for the next available VSC station at a marina near you. We also make house calls on either the public or private side of Lake Anna. A unique VSC time and place may be established for those Property Owners Associations interested in fostering safe boating. Anglers come with great, shiny metal flake bass boats, aluminum hulls and center console striper rigs. The colors are those of the rainbow, and the outboards that power each can exceed 250 hp. Some can dart from the headwaters of the lake to the dam in under 15 minutes. They feature $1,500 3D fish finder/GPS units, electric trolling motors and tandem axle trailers with LED lights. You can spend your child’s college fund fund on one or go budget and choose a packaged, pre-rigged aluminum option. Local options include Nitro and TRACKER (Anna’ Marina Center). Personal Watercraft Love them or dislike them, personal watercraft, Waverunners†® or Jetski® are here to stay and they are favorite among Lakers. Today’s PWC feature low emission four-cycle engines that run cleaner and quieter than their predecessors. Some run over 70 mph, others can accommodate up to Yamaha 212SS. Is Right For You? You’ll find Lake Country Power has the full line of Yamaha Waverunner PWC. We also offer hunt seat riding lessons for all ages and pony rides by appointment. Sorry, no horses for rent or trail rides. Kayaks Yes, there are some folks that prefer not to fire up an engine when they go boating. Kayaks have become very popular around LKA. You’ll see many on docks in addition to powerboats in the lift. You can choose from sit-in hulls and sit-on-top hulls. The former offers a drier ride, the latter a much easier in and out, plus fishing options. Lake Anna Outfitters is Anna’s kayak shop and sells the Emotion line of sit-on-top and sit-in boats. The Emotion Temptation or Mojo is the most popular sit-on-top and the Emotion Glide is the most popular sit-in boat. This shop is located at High Point Marina, selling and renting kayaks. It’s about 80’ from the water so you can test paddle any kayak on the weekends or by appointment on the weekdays. Kayaks are a great way to explore the lake and get exercise. Tandem kayaks are great for families wanting to get on the water for a modest investment. The Lake Anna Kayak Club is active with monthly expeditions both on and off the lake. For more information visit www.lkakayakclub.blogspot.com. Marine Gear Trends Since the EPA changed the design of the fuel containers used by most folks to fill their boat tanks when not at a gasoline station, a simple tank topping has become more difficult. The Flo n' Go hose assembly retro-fits the standarnd fivegallon fuel container and permits you to actually get the fuel out of them in under five minutes with no spillage. You'll find this popular accessory at Anna Point Marina's Boating Store. You'll also be relieved to note several marinas on the lake sell the non-ethanol fuel recommended for use in outboard motors. While you might pay a little extra for this type of gasoline that tends not to attract moiusture, it can save you hundreds of dollars in repair bills. LKA Minutes from the Lake! You’ll find the watersports crowd in one area, the boaters in another, the kayakers in yet another and the anglers in others. The spots that draw the different Lake Anna users have names like The Sandbar, Cocktail Cove, The Bahamas, The Ware Tract and The Sanctuary. This article will share some of LKA’s hotspots and the reason for their popularity. Keep in mind, when you become a user you become a steward of the spot. Dedicated Lakers don’t tolerate misuse of the lake and accept the mantle of responsibility that comes with enjoyment of its special places. Hotspot #1 – The Sandbar Lives On The Sandbar is a 100-yard long spit of sand located at the mouth of Gold Mine Creek far up the North Anna River arm of Lake Anna. When water levels are normal, much of The Sandbar is under about a foot to two feet of water. On most summer weekends you’ll find dozens of boats with their captains and guests enjoying various water-related activities. One of the most popular is people watching, however water volleyball and just catching up vie for second place. The scene is festive and the crowd generally 18 and up. Hotspot #2 – The Boardwalks On Lake Anna Debutting at #2 this year, The Boardwalks on Lake Anna will certainly draw visitors and locals with a combination of restaurants and shopping. At the time of this writing WakeEdgers was open featuring excellent gifts and wakeboarding gear. Other establishments scheduled to open include a restaurant (Tim's At Lake Anna), an ice cream shop and the third location of Dockside Realty. This place will definitely be a gathering place for LKA gliteratti and entertainment. A liimited number of boat slips permit boat-in access. Hotspot #3 – The Patio & Bar At Ally's Restaurant These quickly became LKA hotspots last season. With a year under her belt, Ally is ready for season #2 and your visit. Now you can belly up to the bar and order a Lake Anna Sunset or your favorite malt beverage and enjoy a Redskins game or take the party outside "Dedicated Lakers don't tolerate misuse of the lake and accept the respo 66 lakeannalife.com 2012 Ally's Patio Railroad Ford Trail Lake Anna State Park Boardwalk At Lake Anna spots yours to discover.... and enjoy the view from Ally's Patio overlooking the lake at the Rt. 208 region. It's located just off the trail about 100 yards from the point where the railroad bed ran across the North Anna River. Hotspot #4 – The Deck At Anna Cabana If you know Lake Anna you know there aren't many commercial options in the down lake region - it's a nice break from the busier sections. However, if you want to enjoy an incredible view from a vantage point, high above the water's edge with a beverage or meal, check out the deck at Anna Cabana. It's spacious and a great place to relax when you come in for brunch, lunch or dinner. The crab cakes sell out every weekend. The beer selection is excellent. Hotspot #6 - Cocktail Cove This is a very special place on the lake that can easily be abused so we must advice careful use if you want to visit. In fact we're not going to give the exact location, just a general area - near Dike I. This secret spot features an atoll-like sand spit and protected swimming area on either side. Do not venture onto the island, but stay along the shore to adhere to Dominion regulations regarding islands. Stay for the day but leave no trace. No loud music or craziness permited here. Just good, clean family fun. Hotspot #5 – The Tree On Railroad Ford Trail This is one of more challenging Hot Spots to find on our list. You'll have to hike the Railroad Ford Trail in Lake Anna State Park or kayak/ boat in from the water. The tree and it's unusual shape have attracted numerous visitors and many of them have signed it. While we don't advocate carving anything into this beautiful beech, it's worth finding Hotspot #7 – Anna Point Marina Rock The Boat Concert Jill Gajarksy has scheduled a series of summer concerts at Anna Point Marina and dubbed them the Rock The Boat Series, Yes, you can sit in your boat and listen. The concerts will be held the first Saturday of the month from 7-10 pm in June, July and August. Hotspot #8 – Ware Creek Sunset View Named after the Ware family that sold the land to the state for use as Lake Anna State Park, this is one of the few creeks on LKA with zero development. It’s a favorite with paddlers, anglers and boaters that anchor and enjoy the relative quiet found there. Hike up to an amazing sunset view on the Ware Creek Tract and you'll find a surprise waiting for you! Hotspot #9 – The Bahamas Down at the other end of the lake you’ll find a series of islands across from the North Anna Power Station dubbed “The Bahamas”. Boat to the lee side of many of these islands and you’ll find sand beaches perfect for swimming and relaxing. While actually walking on any of the islands on Lake Anna is not permitted, pulling your boat to the waterline is fine as is snorkeling, setting up your beach chairs and watching the kids have a blast feeding the many fish that frequent these islands. The crowd here varies from island to island but skews more toward families and children. Hotspot #10 – The No Wake Zone Bar Few places on Lake Anna are as fun as the No Wake Zone at Hunter's Landing. Part of Lakeview Restaurant, this outdoor bar is a favorite of visitors that come by boat and land looking for a great place to unwind with friends and family. Enjoy these hotspots and let us know if you find others you’d like to share. Be good stewards and the LKA good times will keep rolling. lake anna hotspo "I want to be YOUR Lake Anna Realtor."
