State Lines Visit us on the web at www.statebeautysupply.net A Publication of State Beauty Supply of Kansas City North rty L i be o o m wr S ho W NO ! N OPE Volume 7 Issue 10 October 2007 Think Pink For a Good Cause! October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every three minutes a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2008, an estimated 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed, along with 61,980 new cases of noninvasive breast cancer. And 40,970 women are expected to die in 2008 from this disease. State Beauty Supply is committed to supporting organizations that fight this debilitating disease that robs so many individuals in our industry of a future. This month, when you shop at one of our showroom locations, we will be asking you to make a donation to the Touched By Cancer foundation, an organi- zation that serves people in our own back yard—the Northland. At the end of the month, State Beauty Supply will match the total amount donated by our customers! In addition, many of our manufacturers are banding together to make contributions from the proceeds of specific items. As one might imagine, these items are almost always pink in color—the signature color of the campaign. One of the items that always creates a strong demand is the Pink Farouk CHI Iron. The special commemorative addition released by CHI this year includes the pink Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon emblem on it to remind all who use it, that Farouk is an active participant in supporting a cure. The irons are available while supplies last for only $109.98. CHI also has pink styling brushes for retail this month. Another creative show of support comes from SBS Beauty Systems, who is offering—for a limited time only—pink pop-up foils for highlighting. The foils come in a box of 350 for only $9.95! Cricket is offering a limited edition pink tweezers made of German Stainless Steel for quality and durability. These are only a few of the items that are available this month that make a bold statement about the beauty industry, and its support for research and development of a cure for this dreadful disease. To order any of these items, and view additional ways to show your support, stop by any of our four locations— including our new store in Liberty, Missouri—to see these items, or register online with our website at www.statebeautysupply.net to see all of the current promotional items from the comfort of your home! Mark your calendar for the next V.I.P. Event with Farouk on October 22nd! 10 Ways To Power Up Your Gift Certificate Sales! By Kerri Lee at www.behindthechair.com It’s the most wonderful time of the year? Try to convince the harried mom running from store to store to locate that last, elusive Playstation 3. Or the clueless boyfriend who can’t remember if she said she preferred cashmere or cotton. Luckily, salons and spas have the best spot on the sleigh when it comes to making the holidays easier and breezier. With gift certificates, lists are ticked off in no time, banishing Yule-induced stress and leaving lots more time for making merry. The potential is enormous. At Ohio’s Charles Penzone Grand Salons, for example, 70% of all business in the five weeks before Christmas is attributed to gift certificates. Want to make the most of your certificate efforts? Here are ten ways to power up the season. 1. One For You and One For Me: People love to be spoiled, especially at the same time they are spoiling someone else. So offer clients a little something extra and they might spend a little more. Mario Tricoci Salons in Chicago, offered this tantalizing deal to customers until November 30th: For every $100 spent, up to $300, the customer received a bonus of $15, up to $45, printed on their service receipt for their next visit to the salon/spa. In Atlanta, Van Michael Salon rewards their customers with a $20 voucher with a $100 gift card, when the card is purchased during one of their three, pre-Christmas Customer Appreciation Days. Penzone Grand Salons also offer a $20 voucher on $100 during their Gift Card Bonus Days, November 24-26. Wisely, the fine print makes the vouchers redeemable from January 2 to February 28, 2007, which helps boost business during the slower winter months. The plan works: the Penzone vouchers have a nearly unheard of redemption rate of 90%. 2. Pick and Click: It’s December and the weather outside is frightful. So why not offer customers the convenience of shopping from the cozy confines of their computers? Printable, online gift certificates save time, gas and best of all, save Mr. Procrastination on 12/24 when he realizes there’s nothing for his wife under the tree. In fact, salons with online capabilities benefit the most from these foot-draggers—Tricoci Salons experience a surge in sales in the three days prior to Christmas. Consider offering a direct delivery feature, too. Penzone Salons will email the gift certificate directly to the recipient—perfect for outof-town gift giving. 3. Blast Off! Online sales are even easier when you use your client database to promote your gift certificates. Throughout the holiday season, send regular email blasts alerting them to your holiday gift opportunities. Include info on special events, parties, customer appreciation days, cooperative promotions with other businesses, packages, etc. and be sure to link the email back to the gift card page on your salon website. 4. Displays! Displays! Displays! When you’re offering gift certificates, don’t whisper…shout about it. Window signs, shelf talkers and stylist stations decked out for the holidays will help spread the word. You probably can’t be too obvious. Tricoci Salons stick gift-box shaped mirror clings on every station. Van Michael Salon’s Marketing Director Reeve McNamara also places mirror talkers in the changing rooms. Deck out that reception area with all your might. There shouldn’t be a shred of doubt about the fact that you offer gift certificates and that they are the answers to every holiday gift-giving dilemma. 5. Crosstown Traffic: Try a little teamwork. Partner with other businesses in the area to get the word out. The local caterer, for example, could be persuaded to include one of your gift cards in a special holiday muffin basket. Or, see if the florist would be willing to offer a wonderful floral arrangement for your salon in exchange for promoting her services. The arrangement, of course, would include a salon gift card. Print out a few hundred post cards and offer them to local businesses to use as bag stuffers; or include them in newcomer packages from your local Chamber of Commerce or Welcome Wagon. 6. Package Deal: Deep-Sea Kelp Pedicure or Brown Sugar Body Scrub? Customers may have trouble deciding which of your service offerings to gift. To help alleviate the stress of decision making, Charles Penzone Grand Salons offers the $220 You Deserve This package. According Chelsea Penzone, director of marketing, the package includes a full body therapeutic massage, custom facial, nutrient manicure, hydrotherapy pedicure and a catered meal. Best of all, however, is to keep gift cards open-ended, or offer them in increments of $25, $50, $75 and $100, which makes it simple for shoppers to keep track of holiday budgets. 7. Center Stage: Did you ever think that local production of The Nutcracker Suite could actually be good for your business? Nearly every community stages this Christmas classic, so why not consider promoting your gift cards in the program? Some salons go so far as to pay for the printing in exchange for the opportunity to place an ad and a discount coupon on the back page. 8. Voices Carry: With this much profit at stake, ad libbing is not recommended. Instead, script out your message and make sure stylists and receptionists know their lines. And be sure to include all information about holiday gift certificates in your telephone “hold” recording. Don’t forget to mention the online purchase option if it’s available 9. Eye on the Prize: It’s important to reward your styling staff for a job well done. Create incentives that will rev up team members. Throw a party or create a trophy for the staffer who beats her numbers from the previous year. Or, thank your top sellers with gift certificate from local businesses-another way cross-promotion comes in handy. 10. Big Bucks: When it comes to gift certificates, your front desk team is the most critical element of success. They’re on the front lines— suggesting, selling and following up (continued on page 3 ~~~~~> ) STATE LINES Page 2 Page 3 VOLUME 7 ISSUE 10 (Continued from Page 2) during this busy time of year. How do you insure they’ll serve as enthusiastic elves of gift card-giving? Most salon owners are blunt: “Incentivize” them with cold hard cash. A lump sum, or a percentage of each sale for top performers is the best way to keep your cash register ringing.
