I want to remind everyone the ambient temperature, the
heat off the pavement and the heat of the bike can be
a recipe for disaster. At least 4 times last summer I was
witness to folks getting off their bikes and just passing out.
KEEP HYDRATED!!! And I don’t mean with beer or Crown!
Drink water and use sunscreen. Also keep a close eye on
your tire pressure and tread…nothing worse than cruising
along with friends and your tire blows. Messes up the
afternoon for everyone even if you don’t lay the bike down.
Also make sure you use the coupons in the magazine! JP

so please remember to use them!!
Many of us are going to Sturgis for the 75th! The folks

We are never at a loss for events this time of year in
Florida. However, after a work week that leaves its
mark on the Mind & Body, an early Saturday ride may
be easier considered than done. Organized rides with
scheduled times and briefings were not on my radar,
just give me flat asphalt and two huge cylinders firing in
perfect rhythm was the needed prescription.
When it comes to events within the Cycle community
we tend to pick our events with skepticism knowing
that some gatherings will be a disappointment. Who
or what crowd is going to be there? We ask ourselves
those questions because time is limited. Will it be
Cruisers, Harleys, Sport bikes, a Poker Run, or custom
Chops? In the case of the Ride Into History Concours
d’Elegance hosted by the World Golf Village every
niche of the Motorcycle legacy was represented which
made for an agreeable scene no matter what you ride.
A showing of three-hundred restored and preserved
Vintage motorcycles from all corners of the United
States assembled in one place for a two day event
to benefit exhibition. Pick your flavor and it was there
including Milwaukee Hogs and the original Indians beside Ducati joined by Soviet-era models, BMW’s galore
and every Moto Guzzi wowed the crowd. Kawasaki,
the innovator in motorcycle technology, stood beside
Honda with their strong line-up of 1970’s bikes still
running to reinforce their reputation of producing an
engine that refuses to quit.
The benefactor for this year was K9’s for Warriors.
They are a voluntary non-profit organization that links
Veterans to rescued service Dogs with a high success
rate of rehabilitation for both the Soldier and the Canine. Last year’s Ride Into History contributed $40,000
to K9’s for Warriors. It may be the struggling Veteran
or damaged Dog that was abused and discarded but
a new partnership of unconditional servitude repairs
wounds that resonates a positive change throughout
the Community. Since the beginning of Ride Into History the foundation has donated over $350,000 to various charities.
Instead of aiming the camera at every bike I found it was refreshingly nostalgic to just listen to people from all over our Country tell
a short story about a certain Make, Model, and Year of a bike they
were now seeing again like a High School reunion. It’s a religiously intimate connection we have to our bikes; the ones we ride now
and those we racked up the miles on. Which one did our family
member have or what color was the hottest thing you remember
from a decade past? Many made your Heart thump and like all
loves a few were wrecked leaving their marks like distorted tattoos.
These are the tales from those days that had to be lived to be understood - the low-speed turns and the high-speed falls that we’ve
experienced because of the freedom to hit the road on two wheels.

Celebrating 35 Years at the
Iron Horse Saloon

35 years in business is an accomplishment for any
establishment. But it is rare in the bar business!
But that is the birthday Iron Horse Saloon in Ormond Beach just celebrated and they did it cowboy style. The day was complete with a great
band Rio Grande, a free mechanical bull to ride
to your heart’s content, a Daisy Duke contest
with cash prizes, best female and male cowboy
outfit contest, best horse and western theme tattoo contest. Willie from Tropical Tattoo was there
doing his thing… Birthday cake filled the partiers’
bellies. Corona, Budweiser and Twisted Tea were
giving out things all day long including Kenny
Chesney tickets! Sherry handed
out Sparklers and we all seemed
like little kids suddenly, no one
waited until the order was given
to light them…they were running
around like maniacs with what I
perceived to be a danger in the
hands of Iron Horse patrons!
Everyone made it through the
night safely and I am sure with
the hardworking Melissa and
Sally holding the reins the
Iron Horse Saloon will ride
out many more birthdays!
Veteran’s Ride in Memory
of Bill Gruber

Friends come and
go in life…some
impact our lives so
deeply that we just
wouldn’t be the
same person without having them
in our lives. Occasionally it is someone that you really haven’t known
long or even that closely. Just the small amount
of time they travel down the highway of life with
you changes you. My friend Bill Gruber was one
of those men! He died last year tragically on his
motorcycle traveling up north to watch a graduation of one of his grandkids. He is missed by his
wife Nancy, his family, his fellow Rolling Thunder
family, by many friends and by me (one of his biggest fans!). This month Rue & Ziffra law firm, Veteran’s Assistance Coalition and Rolling Thunder
Chapter 8 held a ride in Bill’s memory to support
veterans . Bill worked tirelessly in his neighborhood helping those in need, helping veterans and
working with Rolling Thunder Chapter 8.
Bill convinced me a few years back to ride to D.C.
with their Chapter and that was one of the life
changing experiences I credit him for. I have always loved the men and women who protect our
country, but I had an eye opening respect hit me
in the face when I saw how the Vietnam veterans
work to keep our current veterans from ever experiencing what they went through.
The other was when Bill asked me to go on a
day of moving homeless veterans into housing.
I watched a group of “way past middle age” men
spend HOURS each week moving, packing and
unpacking to put one more person into a home
and off the streets, providing all the essentials
needed to make a safe homey place for someone
that 24 hours earlier had basically what would fit
in a knap sack.
This is how Bill spent his life, it wasn’t enough to
have served our country in the military. He continued to do so right until the end. I was pleased
when I heard about the ride to help veterans in his
memory…nothing would have made him happier
than to know the work he loved being a part of he
was still impacting.
Thanks to Rue & Ziffra for being such loyal supporters of great community causes, to Beaver
Bar for being the host for this event and to Rolling
Thunder 8 and Veteran’s Assistance Coalition for
all their tireless work. And to each and every one
of you who rode with us in Bill’s memory!

Opinion

July is one month that I get really irritated. I know it should be a joyous time
with BBQ’s, parades, and fireworks but I look around and I see our schools
indoctrinating instead of teaching. Polls have shown that 30% of our teens have
no idea why, and from whom, we declared our Independence. (21% believe
that the sun revolves around the earth). Even college students when asked
about Independence Day know little or nothing at all. They weren’t taught that
in 1776 we declared independence from an oppressive government. We are
far more dependent and oppressed by this Imperial Federal Government than
we were by Great Britain. We are taxed higher and regulated more.
I make no apology for being a patriotic American. Many Americans have
forgotten or never knew what the Fourth of July is really all about. They never
have been taught that a group of men signed their names to the Declaration
of Independence knowing that it could cost them everything including their
lives. Would you be willing to sacrifice yourself and your family to sign a similar
document declaring independence from Obama tyranny? The Fourth of July
is about our freedom in America. We are losing more and more freedoms
daily. Patriotism is dying. It’s no longer taught in government schools. It’s more
important to teach how to put a condom on a cucumber.
Even when I was in my one room K-8 school writing with a piece of coal on
the back of a flat shovel or with a quill and ink on pulp paper, my teacher
would encourage us to read as much as we could. When I finally went to
high school, where we had electricity, I was instructed to read two books that
have made a deep impression on me. One was “1984”, a dystopian novel
drink

by George Orwell that was about an
omnipresent government surveillance and
public manipulation dictated by a political
system that persecutes individualism and
independent thinking as “thought crime”.
The other was Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shugged” that depicts a dystopian USA
wherein many of society’s most prominent and successful industrialists
abandoned their fortunes and the nation itself, in response to aggressive new
regulations, whereupon most vital industries collapse. Sound familiar?
Our founding fathers despised democracy. That’s why they referred to the
USA as a Republic. Democracy was once explained as “a pack of wolves and
one sheep discussing what to have for lunch”. Time has changed. We now
have the minority of the minority telling the majority how they should live. Since
Bruce Jenner, aka Caitlyn (he to she) (if the surgery when going from she to
he is called “adadicktomy” is going from he to she called “loseadicktomy”)
and Rachel Dolezal (white to black), we now have to accept transgender,
transethnicity (cisacism), transracialism, transanimal (otherkin).
I was once told that if you can’t beat them join them. So I did. When I got up
this morning I felt like I was a female, so when I went to pee, I sat down. When
I went to the gym, I told my trainer that I was still feeling like a female and
would it be all right if I showered with the girls? He said “Just because you
have a nice set of moobs (man boobs) and a beer belly that looks like a baby
bump, that does not entitle you to the female shower room. The dumbbells
are over there dumbbell”.
Someone once said I was pessimistic. Could a person who was married 12
times be a pessimist?

History of Motorcycles:
Part 4
At this point in our journey, the Wright
Brothers are making quite a name
for themselves buzzing around the
skies, and Model T’s are rolling off
Henry Ford’s assembly lines. But
what is happening in the world of
two wheels? The early 1900’s continued to bring changes to the motorcycle world. Once manufacturers
had tackled the basic change over
from bicycle to motorcycle, the need
to start improving took over. There
was an aspect of the pre-war production era that was not
included in last month’s installment, that simply cannot be
excluded from the evolution of these beloved machines…
racing. The new sport of motorcycle racing began drawing
large crowds bent on celebrating our piston powered future.
And with racing came an increased need for comfort, safety,
and of course speed.
While numerous small companies throughout Europe were
involved in the racing industry, many operated only a short
time before ceasing production. One highly notable advancement that came from across the pond occurred in
1908, the development of telescopic pneumatic suspension
systems. The new suspension designs made their way from
England to the US, and the result was well received. After
all, who doesn’t appreciate a ride that doesn’t end with your
body aching and the famed “iron butt”?
Meanwhile, in the states, motorcycle racing popularity was
increasing by the minute. Early racing was actually held on
horse racing ovals or bicycle velodromes,
but by 1909 construction of wooden tracks
specifically designed for motorcycles began to appear. They called their tracks
motordromes, and they were circuits of
1.25 miles constructed out of 2 x 2 and 4
x 4 lumber. They featured severely turned
banks which allowed riders to reach
speeds previously unseen in the
motorcycle world. Crashes were frequent and horrific. Riders who went
down faced being impaled by the
wooden track, and they were often
fatal. Despite the dangers of racing,
people flocked to watch, and riders
wanted to go faster. This need for
speed resulted in demands for more
powerful, versatile, and comfortable
machines…and there just happened
to be some American companies
ready to satisfy that need.
While Indian and Harley Davidson continued to keep up with
the times and improve their production models, there were
two other companies whose focus was simple…SPEED. I’m
pretty sure these guys followed the motto “if ya ain’t first,
you’re last”…or maybe that was Ricky Bobby…but who the
hell cares?? These people helped ensure that today you can
pass everyone in the hammer lane, give ’em the old one finger salute for slowing you down, and wear a smile while doing it.
The Waltham Manufacturing Company was actually founded
in 1893, but it wasn’t until 1903 that they would commence
production of the famous “Orient Racing Bicycles”. These
bikes were first introduced to the world at the Charles River Race Track in Boston, at what would come to be known
as the first recorded motorcycle speed event in the United
States. The Orient set a tack time of 7 minutes over a 5 mile
course. Not bad for a first run, but exhibiting the primal need
to go faster, to push the limits if you will…
they went on to develop an improved 4
HP, 1,000 cc V-Twin that powered the
Marsh-Metz before the company’s motorcycle division went belly-up in 1908.
The other, more familiar, US name in motorcycle racing was Excelsior Motor Company. Though the company operated
overseas as well, the US division began operations in 1905.
A Chicago based division; Excelsior’s first motorcycle was
a 21 cubic inch, 344 cc 4stroke, single speed machine with
a leather belt drive. It had a top speed of 35-40 mph. This
first attempt would not suffice. Humor me, if you will, but at
this point in my writing I am forced to take a small break and
giggle at the scenario unfolding in my head…Four chimps
in all their ginger glory, standing around this bike. The first
is smiling at his brilliant creation, awaiting praise from the
others on a job well done. Chimps 2 and 3 pat him on the
back and commence telling stories of the awesomeness that
has just unfolded in front of them. But chimp 4 stands a bit
apart…scratching his head (or whatever chimps scratch)
and pondering. (Number 4 you see…he is the crazy one,
the envelope pusher, the friend that always sees another option…that usually gets you all in trouble). The other 3 stop
and stare at Number 4, and Number 1 of course has to ask
what the problem is…Number 4 looks up, one eye making
contact and the other trailing up and off to the left (as usual).
He smiles as he raises his arms, lets out a loud abrupt conglomeration of excited grunts…and begins flexing his throttle
hand. Squealing and grunting commences, and they all
begin exercising those throttle hands. And so it begins….
back to the drawing board. And so it was for Excelsior…
there had to be a better way, a faster way. By 1910 they
had introduced an engine configuration they would become
famous for, and continue to produce until 1929….the notable
“X Series”. This engine was the V-Twin measuring 61 cubic
inches (1,000 cc) and would become the first ever to hit the
century mark. The “Model Big X” was the mainstay of Excelsior production, sporting an inlet-over-exhaust V-Twin, it was
firstly belt driven, and later had 2 speed and 3 speed gearboxes. Production was limited in comparison to Indian and
Harley, and many of these models were exported to Europe
and Australia.
This era brought about the evolution of spring frames, magneto ignitions, kick starts, spring mounted seats, improved
tires, and heavier/sturdier frames to accommodate the larger
engines. The motorcycle had become its own entity, no longer a bicycle with an engine, but a separate machine with its
own technology. In late 1913 and early 1914, at what was
then its heyday, motorcycle production suddenly began to

of WWI in 1914, the motorcycle had rapidly progressed into
a dependable, speedy, and relatively inexpensive means of
transportation. Next time we’ll take a look at where the First
World War propelled the motorcycle.

Memorial Day 2015

For some people Memorial Day brings to mind a
three-day weekend, barbeques, a day at the beach,
and the Indy 500. What should be remembered is the
reason for this holiday, which is to thank the veterans
of this country and the families of those who have
fallen.
Every Memorial Day, Florida National Cemetery
(Bushnell) holds a ceremony to honor those buried
there and their families. Even in times of high gas
prices and economic turmoil, the Florida motorcycle
communities were out in full force to support this
event. Several military riding organizations participated. With approximately 350 bikes, the largest
group riding into the cemetery was the Defenders
MC (Tampa Bay Chapter). The Defenders MC is a
group comprised of active and retired military, law
enforcement, emergency services and public safety
professionals.
The Defenders’ ride was coordinated by Colonel Ron
“Paladin” Rook, USMC (Ret.), who has done so for
the past several years. Local HOG and other riding
groups were invited to join the Defenders for this ride.
Thanks to a police escort and the excellent road captains from the Defenders MC, this 30+ mile ride went
off without a hitch.
The ceremony had many poignant speakers, patriotic music and a “missing man” flyover by Ye Mystic
Air Krewe. While the actual meaning and traditions
of Memorial Day may have been forgotten by some
people, those attending the ceremony came out to remember, honor and salute those who had defended
our country as well as to those currently keeping our
country and citizens safe. Once again, the group
“Flags for Fallen Veterans” and a couple of thousand volunteers made sure that 120,000+ flags were
placed on the grave sites. A big THANK YOU to this
group and all the volunteers that came out the day
before to make this happen.

Glass Gallon Pitcher
Cup of Regular Sugar (or Splenda)
Cups of Ice Water; Divided
Packed Cup of Mint Leaves; roughly chopped
Cups of Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice
Cups of Quality White Rum
Sprigs of Mint
In a saucepan combine the sugar and water. Bring to a boil and gently
whisk till sugar dissolves. This is called a “simple syrup”. Remove from
heat & add the mint leaves. Let the simple syrup cool completely; 30 mins.
Strain out the mint. To glass pitcher, add the lime juice and stir in simple
syrup, remaining 4 cups of ice water and quality Rum. Stir completely. Add
the mint sprigs and it’s ready to drink ASAP! Serve over cubed ice. We had
these on the Island and they are SO refreshing! And everyone uses limes
as there’s virtually thousands of lime trees everywhere. This will end up
being your “go-to” summer drink.
THE 3 CLASSIC BBQ SAUCES
The Classic
1 Cup Ketchup
1/2 Cup Plus 2 Tbls. Water
1/4 Cup, Plus 1 Tbls. Apple Cider Vinegar
1/4 Cup Plus 1 Tbls. White Vinegar
1/4 Tbls. Plus 1-1/2 tsp. Brown Sugar
2 Tbls. Plus 1-1/2 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
1 Tbls. Chili Powder
1 Tbls. Ground Cumin
1-1/2 tsp. Kosher Salt
1-1/2 tsp. Coarse Black Pepper
1/2 Cup of Honey (optional) for good ole’ stickiness
Combine all ingredients in a pot and warm gently over medium heat w/o
bringing mix to an actual boil; stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Pour
into Mason jars and let cool before capping.
This cooking method will apply to this and next sauce. Keep it Simple,
baby. That’s how we roll, right?

1 Cup White Vinegar
1 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar

1 Tbls. Brown Sugar
2 Tbls. Brown Sugar

2 tsp. Smoked Paprika

1 Large Garlic Clove; peeled & smashed
1 Chipotle in Adobo; plus 1 Tbls. of it pureed
3 Tbls. Quality Bourbon
1 tsp. Roasted Coriander
1/2 tsp. Paprika
1 Cup Spicy Brown Mustard
1/2 Cup Yellow Mustard
In medium saucepan, combine vinegar, purple onion, garlic, chipotle pepper, bourbon, coriander and smoked paprika. Bring mix to a hard boil, then
reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 10 mins. & strain into a medium bowl and
then pour into a Mason jar.
CORN TIP: Take a whole ear of corn, husk on, & put in micro 3 mins for
S-M, 4 mins for L-XL. Remove. Slice off top tip and get ahold of bottom and
shake, shake, shake till ear drops out. It will be totally silk free, piping hot
and ready to butter it up. Perfection!
PINEAPPLE TIP: Put on garden gloves if you’re a wimp (lol) and get
up under crown top, pull up while twisting and top comes right off. Slice off
1/2 inch for a clean cut and turn upside down and place in bowl and just let
it sit in fridge this way until ready to cut. Pineapples are cut and stored on
their bottom their whole life so this way all the juices are redistributed back
through the entire fruit. Who knew?

STRAWBERRY & CRÈME’ CHEESE SPLENDOR
In 13x9 glass bake dish layer 1 solid layer of graham crackers then another
layer going other way. Mix up 2 cups Cool-Whip, 1 pkg. Philly Whipped
Crème’ Cheese & 1 cup sugar. Mix up 2 pkgs. strawberry gelatin, 2 cups
boiling water, 2 pkgs. frozen sweetened sliced strawberries; thawed. Put
filling over graham crackers, then Cool Whip mix. Chill for 5 hours. Sprinkle
with crushed graham crackers. Phenom

Stormy Hill Harley-Davidson Celebrates 13 Years!
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 13
years since Stormy Hill Harley-Davidson
opened their doors. “We decided we
wanted to do something really special
for this lucky 13 anniversary, so we
elected to giveaway a new 2015 Street,”
said Janice Malik, owner. On June 6th,
there were only 500 entries allowed and
you had to be present to win. Not only
did they giveaway a bike they had two
live radio remotes, K97 Country and
103.1 the Wolf were on site. Additionally,
the Andrew Williams Band and Patrick
Gibson Band shared the sound system
so there was never a break in the music
when one took a break the other band
played and the music was great.
At 3:00 they pulled the lucky winner,
Deirdra T. of Winter Garden screamed
when she heard her name called. “Not
only was she the perfect winner for this
bike, it was her birthday as well,” said
Janice. “It was a wonderful event and
the best thing about the day was that
everyone really seemed to be enjoying
themselves. We have heard so many
compliments about the day and all that
we did to make it so much fun. Guess
we have really raised the bar now.”

Late in the night, “Buzzard” finally regained consciousness. He was in the
hospital, agonizing in pain.
The last thing he remembered was going down on his bike and of course was
wondering if “she” was alright.
He found himself in the ICU with tubes in his nose, needles and IV drips
in every arm, a breathing mask, wires monitoring every function and yet a
gorgeous nurse hovering over him. Buzzard realized he was obviously in a
life-threatening situation.
He had heard the Nurses talking out at their station that there was a 50/50
percentage that he could have temporary paralysis from the waist down.
The nurse entered his room, gave him a serious, deep look, straight into the
eyes, and he heard her slowly say, “For now, you may not feel anything from
the waist down.”
Somehow Buzzard managed to mumble in reply, “Can I feel your boobs, then?”
Two women in their early 50’s pass away and meet up for the first time in
Eternity.
They hadn’t seen each other for quite some time.
SYLVIA: Hi! Wanda.
WANDA: Hi! Sylvia. How’d you die?
SYLVIA: I froze to death.
WANDA: How horrible!
SYLVIA: It wasn’t so bad. After I quit shaking from the cold, I began to get
warm & sleepy, and finally died a peaceful death. What about you?
WANDA: I died of a massive heart attack. I suspected that my husband was
cheating, so I came home early to catch him in the act. But instead, I found him
all by himself in the den watching TV.
SYLVIA: So, what happened?
WANDA: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I
started running all over the house looking. I ran up into the attic and searched,
and down into the basement. Then I went through every closet and checked
under all the beds. I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, and finally I
became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack and died.
SYLVIA: Too bad you didn’t look in the freezer -- we’d both still be alive.
WHY is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made
with real lemons?
WHY isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food?
WHY do they sterilize the needle and the arm for lethal injections?
WHY don’t sheep shrink when it rains?
WHY do banks leave mammoth vault doors wide open and then chain the
pens to the counters?
Charlie was installing a new door and found that one of the hinges was
missing. He asked his wife Tilly if she would go to Home Depot and pick up a
hinge. Tilly agreed to go.
While she was waiting for the manager to finish serving a customer, her eye
caught a beautiful bathroom faucet. When the manager was finished, Tilly
asked him, “How much is that faucet?”
The manager replied, “That’s a gold plated faucet and the price is $500.00.”
Tilly exclaimed, “My goodness, that’s an expensive faucet and certainly out of
my price range!” She then proceeded to describe the hinge that Charlie had
sent her to buy.
The manager said that he had them in stock and went into the storeroom to get
one. From the storeroom the manager yelled, “Ma’am, you wanna’ screw for
that hinge?
Tilly shouted back, “No, but I will for the faucet.”
EATING IN THE 50’s & 60’s; A Simpler Time.
Pasta was not eaten in Australia.
Curry was a surname.
A takeaway was a mathematical problem.
A pizza was something to do with a leaning tower.
All potato chips were plain; the only choice we had was whether to put the salt
on or not.
Rice was only eaten as a milk pudding for babies.
Calamari was called Squid and we used it as fish bait.
A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining.
Brown bread was something only poor people ate.
Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking.
Tea was hot or cold, but never green.
Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white
gold. Cubed sugar was regarded as posh, and Sweet Tea was the only thing
you drank in the South (when not drinking liquor).
Fish didn’t have fingers in those days.
Eating raw fish was called poverty, not Sushi.
None of us had ever heard of yogurt.
Healthy food consisted of anything edible.
People who didn’t peel potatoes were regarded as lazy.
Cooking outside was called camping.
Seaweed was not a recognized food.
“Kebab” was not even a word, never mind a food.
Prunes were medicinal.
Surprisingly, Muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed.
Water came out of the tap.
*If someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than petrol for it, they
would have become a laughing stock; now they’re mega-rich.
But the one thing that we never, ever, had on our table in the sixties was
Elbows or Phones.
Just sayin’…….as they now say.
