commodore’s corner
Thanks to Sharon Berry, Vanessa Leffler, and Bonnie Stanford for our Halloween party fun! Guy and
Sallie were a big part of the festivities, the Big Bad Wolf
and Little Red Riding Hood served us well! If you
missed the party, you can enjoy it vicariously through all
the great pics that Sara took. Thanks to Coach Karen
Tone for running the Hank Gartner Costumed Regatta
for our youth sailors – they had a lot of fun, sailing
around in costume and playing after the races!
The Halloween bash was just one of several parties
that will be held between now and next May. Most are
associated with regattas but we have our traditional holiday celebrations as well. Every event we have here at
the Sailing Club requires a group of dedicated volunteers, whether they’re serving on race committee, as
cooks, decorators or clean up crew! Our club is famous
for its volunteer spirit, but I still see the same faces
working hard at every event. If you haven’t stepped up,
please consider doing so. Pick a date or an event that
appeals to you, and get in contact with the Board member who is responsible for that event. You can see that
list posted right here in Signals.
By the time this newsletter reaches you, we will already have packed a lot into one weekend, between the
spaghetti dinner to raise funds for the Mark Sorensen
Youth Sailing Program, the Open House, keelboat sailing lessons, and the Ladies’ Upper Keys Invitational!
But wait, there’s more! Our Dockmasters’ Regatta, the
Black Betsy, and a Thanksgiving feast are all scheduled
to happen in November. Early December is also jampacked, between our Flail and Sail and the Key Largo
Regatta. If you can’t volunteer, please do come out and
join the fun!

Speaking of seeing
the same faces at
every event,
there’s one face
we are sure to see
every time:
BONNIE
STANFORD, our
Decorating Queen
and November
Member of the
Month! Sara
Kahler nominated
Bonnie, who is always on hand to
make sure the UKSC is the best-decorated sailing
club in the state. Bonnie spends a lot of her time
keeping our huge stock of decorations organized,
and she spends of lot of her money on those decorations, too! Members like Bonnie make the sailing
club a fun, welcome place for all of us. Be sure and
say THANK YOU to Bonnie!

Eco Week was November 1 through November 7.
It isn’t just for pipe-smoking, sandal-wearing, Volvodriving tree huggers anymore. Eco Week is supposed
to remind us to keep our environment healthy. Our little
sailing club always does its best to recycle bottles, cans
and cardboard and keep things clean and green.
Please turn the water off after washing your boats and
sails. That way we don’t waste water and we’ll have a
lower water bill.
We have a handicap parking space by the front
door now. Legally we don’t need one but it’s a nice
thing for our members who may have a little difficulty
walking on the gravel.
The club bar now offers Jello shots. That’s right.
Jello for adults in Pina Colada rum, Orange vodka, and
other flavors. Sally Lange the dockmaster dreamed
these up. It’s a fun, interesting dessert for $1.

We're celebrating Thanksgiving Day at the
UKSC! We will be serving turkey, roasted and deep
fried, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, yams,
cranberries , bread, and all the trimmings! We already
have volunteers for many things so if you have a specialty let us know and we'll get you included in the
fun!! Special desserts are always welcome and I hear
the Pie Fairy (aka Commodore) may pay us a visit!! Dinner will be served at approximately 3 to 4 p.m. Another
e-mail will follow with the exact time.
Lindi had a great idea to have a food donation box
for the Burton food bank so please bring along something non perishable to give on Thanksgiving!
Along with that, Leah thinks it would be a great idea
for you to reserve a table and decorate it in the traditional way your family did. So get your creative
side going and we'll have the UKSC looking great!
We have about 40 signed up for the event so far so if
you're interested contact Pat (p200ytl@terranova.net) or
Sara (sarakahler@aol.com) via email to sign
up. Please sign up no later than November 13 so we
know how much food to get and no one has to go hungry on Thanksgiving. We have to cover our costs and
will be charging members $12.00 per adult and $6.00
for small children. Those who have already signed up
only need to confirm the number in your group if you
were unsure before.
We're looking forward to a great day and hope this
will become another great UKSC tradition!!

Fall is here and the winds are up! This month gives
us a little bit of a break in our schedule. The big regattas this month are the LUKI and the two-day Dockmasters. In addition to the “first off the dock” race, our
Dockmasters have some special plans for us including
the first annual cardboard boat race. I am sure it will
result in more than one Facebook moment.
I am looking for helpers on a few projects, If any of
you can lend a hand please let me know.
Clubhouse VHF antenna lead is broken.
Pontoon boat needs a bottom job.
Weather station replacement.
Install electric air horn on Signal boat.
Sunfish repairs.
The club is also searching for some offsite parking
for our rarely used powerboat trailers.
Hope to see you at the club for Thanksgiving Dinner.

flail and sail 2010
Can’t seem to buff up your brassie or
put a shine on your spoon? You say you can no longer
bedazzle us with your baffy or that you might confuse us
with your cleek. If you are fastidious about your midmashie shot, then maybe your niblick’s not a threat. Or
does all this golf speak make you want to chuck your
jigger or pitch your wedge?
What if your highfield lever isn’t up to the task, or
your barber isn’t hauling quite right? If your headledge is
hurting or your gudgeon is grounded? What if a Bombay
runner has taken your bonded jacky? What if your
canze iron is currently caught in a cringle?
What’s a USKC bunny to do?
Join us on December 4th and 5th for the annual Flail
and Sail, a day of collegial golfing in the Redlands
(Saturday) followed by a day of friendly sailing on Buttonwood Sound (Sunday), punctuated by a delicious yet
reasonable Saturday dinner at the Club. We’ll be playing
best shot in the golf matches, and all sailors can add
their golf scores to their boat’s corrected elapsed times
to arrive at a winning low score. We especially hope to
get all of our novice golfers out on the links to experience, first hand, one of life’s most… most… uh, bracing
sports.
To get the 2010 Flail and Sail up and running, we
need sign-ups for the Saturday golf games and the delicious dinner planned for that evening. Once we have
an idea of numbers, we’ll get a set of Rules and Regulations out to all of you, so you can start practicing keeping your portion of the house behind the tee line in time
for the bonspiel. Ooops! That’s from curling. Sorry.
Heady stuff, this mix of turf and surf.

race committee
Welcome back to all of our seasonal members! It’s
not only nice having you around again, but a relief to
have you rejoin race committee. During the months you
are away we have a somewhat limited pool of volunteers. Thanks to your return some will get a much
needed break. But they won’t rest for long, the calendar
is jam-packed with regattas at this time of year. We still
need race committee volunteers for Dockmasters and
Flail and Sail. Email one of us if you can help out with
either of those regattas.

Congratulations to the Mark Sorensen Youth Race
Team! This was a very busy month for our racers, starting with a fundraiser bagging groceries at Winn Dixie
over Columbus Day weekend. The following weekend
was their first regatta of the season at River Romp in
Ft. Meyers. With combined fleets of over 200 boats, our
team did a fantastic job. Ben Althouse placed 1st in
Green Fleet consisting of 88 boats! Our first time Green
Fleet regatta sailors Ella Marsden, Emma Marsden,
Caroline Althouse and Ethan Osborne all had great finishes. Red, White and Blue Fleet had 112 boats and
our own Ryan Guth placed 29th in Blue! What a great
way to begin the season. The Hank Gartner Costume
Regatta followed on Saturday October 30th. This was a
true regatta followed by fun races, capsizing and costume contest. Congratulations to Alex Orhmundt for his
first place finish in the costume contest. Thanks to race
committee Karen Tone and judge, Ginette (Lord Nelson) Hughes. Our sailors will travel to Naples on November 13 for their next regatta.
