Description Of Ironmongery: Working on such a prestigious project, it was evident that aesthetics were of paramount importance. The architect desired a unique finish on items so Allgood worked closely to produce a shot peened finish on many of the stainless steel furniture. In addition, to create a clean aesthetic on doors which required push plates and signage, Allgood created an all in one solution by shot peening stainless steel plates, blanking off areas to create contrasting areas for signage to be screen printed within. Many doors within the gallery space were of traditional arched design which caused a challenge on fire doors with self-closing requirements. Allgood’s solution to this issue was to specify floor springs combined with projection hinges to provide a specification that would self-close in conjunction with the door geometry. Furthermore, to minimise the aesthetic impact of the floor springs, bespoke tile trays with access holes were created to conceal the floor springs whilst providing easy access for floor spring adjustment. This provided an aesthetically pleasing solution for a very technical application. Due to the frequency of visitors to Tate Britain, it was important that the ironmongery specification would be robust, durable and capable of performing to the highest standards. Additionally, many doors throughout the building were very tall and heavy, demanding an ironmongery solution that was fit for purpose. A solution was created by selecting high quality items throughout the specification with the highest level of warranties, to ensure that Allgood exceeded the performance requirements for the project. Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 Manufacturing Support: Co-ordination with our supply base was key to this project as there were a high number of bespoke items. We had to rely heavily on their technical expertise to ensure that we could produce the requested items to the architect’s requirements, whilst remaining within budget. The shot peened finish of many items in particular required us to work closely with both our manufacturers and the architect to ensure that we delivered the desired aesthetic for the project. Additional Information (relating To The Ironmongery Specification): Throughout this project, Allgood had to liaise with all parties to ensure that the bespoke element of the specification would deliver an end result that made a real difference to the building. This required a real team effort and high level of technical expertise to ensure that the ironmongery package performed beyond expectations, whilst delivering a unique, minimal aesthetic to the project. Page 7 Commercial 2015 Sponsored by: The SilverShore Trading Co Ltd COMMERCIAL 2ND PLACE Project Name: West Yorkshire Police Divisional HQ Architect: Jacobs Architectural Ironmonger: Em-B Solutions COMMERCIAL 3RD PLACE Project Name: World Conservation & Exhibition Centre (British Museum) Architect: Rogers, Stirk & Harbour Architectural Ironmonger: Allgood plc Reason For Nomination: Reason For Nomination: The specification had to meet many tightly controlled requirements. The building is multi-functional, from front of house office spaces through to the high security custody area and this is reflected in the multi-disciplined ironmongery specification. The extension of the British Museum is a world class research facility. The contrast with the existing building created a challenge to find continuity between the ironmongery of both buildings whilst delivering a sustainable, high performance package. Description Of Ironmongery: Description Of Ironmongery: The ‘front of house’ office doors use durable 316 stainless steel round bar return handles and stainless steel door closers. Corridor doors in this area use stainless steel pull handles coupled with matching finger plates. The British Museum houses world renowned artefacts worth millions so security is a high priority. In the main building, there are a large number of high security Assa Abloy locks with inside turns and security escutcheons which protect the cylinder. As the new building is an extension, it was imperative that the specification was tailored to match the existing ironmongery in order to ease integration between the two buildings and match the design aesthetic. Consequently, we sourced the same locks and cylinders for the extension and continued the master key suite into the new building. Due to the highly robust nature of the custodial area, the requirements for ironmongery had to differ to the office areas. This area included specialist anti barricade products, Geze concealed closers, and reduced ligature pinch grip pull handles. This type of ironmongery would allow for maximum control in this area and reduce risk of self harm to any service users. The locking suite was supplied where applicable throughout the building. This co-ordinated suite had to meet the requirements of six different door types including, Timber, Metal, Glass, High Security, Curtain Walling and Garage type. Specialist cylinders were required for some applications, including, at times, extended length cylinders. Manufacturing Support: The wide range of Cylinder variations, sizes and types available from CES enabled us to provide the Single Grand Master key system required by the client. Additional Information (relating To The Ironmongery Specification): ‘The multi-disciplined use of the building created a challenge for the specifier but Em-B produced a seamless design throughout. The cost effective and co-ordinated package of ironmongery met with the client’s specification and long term requirements’ – Martin Brown - Interserve. Page 8 As the building is a scientific conservation centre, the brief from the architect required a particular focus on creating an environmentally sustainable building. We were able to meet the sustainability expectations as all of our stainless steel door fittings are made from 62% recycled materials of which 95% can be recycled at the end of the product’s life. Additionally, our packaging is also made from recycled material and can be recycled once it has been used. With a public building of this magnitude, there is a high amount of traffic around the building so it was imperative that the ironmongery performed to the highest level. For this reason, Allgood supplied the highest quality hardware including: triple knuckle hinges, floor spring units and mortice locks. We specified the hinges as they are made from 316 stainless steel and come with a 25 year guarantee whilst the other hardware items have a ten year guarantee. We also supplied our Modric lever handles on most of the doors as they are tested to grade 4 against BS EN 1906 and provide the doors with the highest quality and most durable handles. Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 Commercial 2015 Sponsored by: The SilverShore Trading Co Ltd COMMERCIAL COMMENDED Project Name: Minerva House Architect: KPP Architects Architectural Ironmonger: Em-B Solutions Manufacturing Support: Description Of Ironmongery: Due to the nature of this project (it is an extension of the current building) there were both design and functional requirements that needed to be fulfilled in order to match the existing building. Assa Abloy locks with oval cylinders were used in the main building so the client asked us to match them. We worked closely with our manufacturing and purchasing department to source the correct locks for the new project, enabling seamless integration of the existing master key system. Front of house ironmongery was all finished in Bronze, this included 500mm pull handles, finger plates, Grade 13 hinges, flush bolts, RAL finished door closers, signage and access control. This co-ordinated package was in the lift area of each floor, allowing for controlled egress in and out of the offices. Close attention to detail was paid to the Bronze finish as it was necessary to try and achieve a uniformed colour even though items were obtained from multiple sources. Additional Information (relating To The Ironmongery Specification): On this project we displayed our flexibility and dynamism as we were able to put together a specification that had to fit into many criteria. It had to be environmentally sustainable, whilst being highly durable and functional. It also had to provide a consistent and professional aesthetic whilst matching elements of the original building. Doing this required integration across a number of companies, and all departments to ensure that we met the specification exactly to the architect’s requests. To keep within the clients budget the ironmongery specification for the back of house areas also differed. Pull handles and signage were used but in the more cost effective stainless steel finish. Access control was specified throughout the building including the glass front revolving door and bike storage areas. Manufacturing Support: Specialist bronze plating. Additional Information: (relating To The Ironmongery Specification): ‘Em-B’s scheduling support and service assisted in providing an excellent solution to a complex brief and was within the clients budget’ - Tony Plowman - KPP Architects. Reason For Nomination: All doorsets were completed with 150mm satin stainless steel kickplates, fitted to the bottom of the doors to protect from scuffs and shoe marks. Satin stainless steel ironmongery from Laidlaw’s Centurion range was also fitted, complementing the doors aesthetically. Specifically designed for fire doors, to resist against the effects of heat for either 30 or 60 minutes, H102 Fixed Hinges were also fitted and finished in bright zinc plating. Page 16 Additional Information (relating To The Ironmongery Specification): Abed Shad, Senior Architect at Aedas Architects said: “Laidlaw was incredibly helpful throughout the project and the team was on hand to provide the knowledge and expertise we required. Considering the scale and phasing of the project, Laidlaw delivered on time and to a very high standard, meaning we were able to hand the completed academy over in good time, allowing pupils and staff to settle in as soon as possible.” Chris Yates, Project Manager from Willmott Dixon said: “It was a pleasure to work with the team at Laidlaw – they were dedicated to helping us find the right solution and were on hand to offer their help and advice at every step of the way. They were incredibly proactive and were always willing to offer a solution when needed.” Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 Education 2015 Sponsored by: Dorma EDUCATION 2ND PLACE Project Name: Glasgow School of Art Architect: JM Architects Architectural Ironmonger: Allgood plc Reason For Nomination: Allgood Plc supplied an ironmongery solution that was tailored to suit a wide variety of abnormal doorsets, differing in shape, size and function. Description Of Ironmongery: On this project, one of the obstacles Allgood had to overcome was supplying a door closing solution for the four 3m tall x 2m wide Gallery swing doors. To create a durable door opening and closing cycle for the gallery doors, Allgood supplied floor spring units that were able to sustain the weight of the door without hindering the floor springs performance. Special coffin boxes were supplied to suit the buildings concrete flooring and also to provide extra support. As the gallery doors were taller and wider than most doorsets, Allgood worked with the contractor by detailing the special coffin box dimensions so a provision can be made when settling the concrete floor, as the dimensions were bigger and wider than our standard offering. A bigger coffin box was needed to structurally support the floor springs position, using a larger surface area of the floor’s aperture to aid the floor spring’s operation when opening the 3m tall x 2m wide door. Special cover plates were also supplied in order to cover the entire special size coffin boxes, maintaining a clean finish with the polished concrete floor. Another challenge Allgood had to overcome was the specification of ironmongery to irregular shaped double doors that form the entrance to the lecture room. The doors were irregularly shaped due to 3 massive circular shafts, which allow natural light to enter the building. This was a key facet to the building’s design and the door and ironmongery solution had to adapt. The lecture room double doors were wider at the top than they were at the bottom and needed to be self closing to prevent outside noise from interrupting lectures. To meet this challenge, Allgood used a double action floor spring even though they opened in one direction, with a pivot point offset from the edge of the door at varying points depending on the location. This satisfied both needs when hanging and closing the door. Manufacturing Support: A great team effort was needed to ensure that when supplying sliding door gear to the project, all intricate important information was obtained. Working with the manufacturing base, we were advised on what precise and detailed questions were required, to provide a strong technical ironmongery specification. When dealing with the door suppliers we needed to find out important factors regarding the door such as; material, mass, width, height, opening width and the location in the building. Once we had obtained these details, we worked closely with our manufactures utilising their expertise and experience to provide a long lasting and durable sliding door gear set. A good relationship with our supply chain allowed us to provide a technically strong ironmongery specification when dealing with the wide variety of doorsets. When fabricating the special size coffin boxes and cover plates we were able to provide a coffin box that was deep enough to withstand the strain of the tall and heavy gallery doors. Working with the contractor and the manufacturer we were able to specify special dimensions to suit the concrete flooring whilst supporting the floor springs full potential. When specifying ironmongery to the gift shop section of the project, the area inside the gift shop was small and would have merchandise stands and rolling artwork displays. Because of this shortage on space inside the gift shop and the corridor outside the entrance was restricted by the coffee shop bar and corridor to the toilets, we felt that the best solution to this problem was to supply bespoke sliding door gear to the entrance of the gift shop. The ironmongery supplied to the 200x1250mm wide sliding door contained; Bottom rollers, channel top guides, bottom channel, wheeled hangers, and top and bottom tracks. Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 Page 17 Education 2015 Sponsored by: Dorma EDUCATION 3RD PLACE Project Name: BCU Parkside Building Architect: Associated Architects Architectural Ironmonger: Eisenware Ltd Reason For Nomination: It won the RIBA West Midlands Award in 2014 and now marks the first step in creating a multi-million pound centre of excellence within Birmingham. It had no compromise on quality with the product selection for its variety of doors. Description Of Ironmongery: Much of the hardware on the project was either bespoke or out of the ordinary – often because of the size and weight of some of the doors. For instance, because many studio doors are up to three metres high, bespoke 900mm long pull handles were selected. The refreshing part of this project was that we were never asked to compromise on quality In fact in certain instances, the architects asked us to spec up, on kickers and plates for example. This level of bespoke scheduling really did bring the AIs expertise to the fore. There were so many interesting doors – like a door which needed panic escape hardware on the inside but which had to function as side entrance for staff from the outside with full access control on it. It certainly tested us!. In the lobby area are a set of “hidden doors” which needed to be completely flush with the walls. For this Eisenware selected TECTUS concealed hinges from SIMONSWERK. The TECTUS fully-concealed hinge range was specifically designed for unrebated residential and heavy-duty doors so they made the perfect choice for these “secret” doors which had to be offset because of the throw of the door. This was not an average spec – there were floor springs set into computer floors, very heavy and tall doors, hold opens on pocket doors – lots of really interesting challenges so there were a lot of site meetings and we had to work really closely with the architects and then the contractors to make it work. We specified ASSA Locks working with our scandanavian partner d line and achieved a minimal look with door furniture that is tested under BS EN1906 to Class 4 (for use on doors that have frequent and violent usage). Page 18 Manufacturing Support: Nowhere was the spec more challenging than the door closers which were supplied by GEZE. This started with the automatic doors on the main entrance lobby. The Slimdrive SL automatic sliding doors were chosen for the entrance lobby primarily because the very low profile height of 7cm enables almost invisible integration into the facade. The overall effect is one of maximum light and space in the atrium while creating a lobby area that minimises heat loss – essential for the building to meet its low energy targets. GEZE’s products also feature elsewhere in the building. The large acoustic doors to the television studios are fitted with TS 5000 overhead door closers - a heavy duty closer ideal for big and heavy doors. The TS 2000 V door closer was chosen as a highly efficient, cost effective solution for internal doors throughout the building. It is also finished in satin stainless steel, ensuring design consistency throughout the building. In today’s competitive market we strongly believe in offering a client the quality the building deserves. We chose GEZE as our door control partner to complement our chosen d line products and give the design the characteristics this modern and fresh building requires. Associated Architects appreciate both the design and performance of the products chosen for their buildings, as do the team at contractor Willmott Dixon, who demand quality specifications. Additional Information (relating To The Ironmongery Specification): Once the spec had been agreed, we worked extremely closely with the contractors to ensure that it was carried through to completion. As with all projects, we had to work to a budget and of course hardware is always an easy target for cost cutting. Partly because it’s often the last thing to go in, and partly because many contractors don’t always understand why we have selected a particular product for a particular door. We worked closely with Willmott Dixon to ensure that the project did not get the “cheap” treatment and the client was able to have a completed building with products that would give them many many years of use. Page 19 Health 2015 Sponsored by: Harbrine HEALTH WINNER Project Name: The Royal Star & Garter Architect: Scurr Architects Ltd Architectural Ironmonger: Allgood plc Reason For Nomination: Allgood Plc supplied a complex ironmongery schedule including a mixture of finishes to provide a visual contrast between door furniture and its surroundings. Alongside the ironmongery schedule an access control package was supplied. Description Of Ironmongery: Allgood liaised with the Scurr Architects Ltd to provide an ironmongery schedule that ensured every room was specially equipped to suit the individual resident’s needs. Taking this into consideration, we supplied Salto lever handle sets with 41020 FSB lever handles. The combination of access control and ironmongery was required, as Salto’s efficient software and reliability teamed with FSB’s ergonomic lever handles, providing a safe and secure solution. As the residents of the care home are elderly people who are more susceptible to arthritis and rheumatism, we felt the ergonomic lever handle supplied was the most suitable, as it provided a comfortable grip. allowing residents to travel around freely in certain areas and keep restricted areas secure. With the end user in mind the automatic door operators allowed residents to open doors without having to use as much strength as a mechanical push and pull doorset. Manufacturing Support: A good working relationship with our manufacturers allowed us to deliver our ironmongery solution on time, within budget and to a high quality. With access control playing a vital role in the flow of traffic throughout the building we relied heavily upon our access control partners to modify the FSB 41020 lever handle so that it could be fixed to the on-door access control escutcheons. This proved vital to ensure that the hardware aesthetic remained consistent throughout the project. Working with our manufacturers we were able to firstly attach the handle to the on-door access control devices, in order to reduce labour time spend on site, aiding us to deliver all of our products on time. Royal Star & Garter’s dedicated dementia area required an ironmongery solution that kept within the main interior theme that used contrasting colours to help residents navigate their way round the building. To maintain the visual contrast between the ironmongery, door and the walls, Allgood supplied Polished Brass ironmongery as the finish contrasted on a variety of coloured doors; white, purple and green. This was an integral concept of the care home as different parts of the building were broken down into a colour scheme. Another concept the architect wanted to adopt was a homelike atmosphere. As well as providing a visual contrast, Polished Brass ironmongery is also traditionally a residential ironmongery finish, reinforcing the homelike atmosphere for its residents. Allgood supplied a combined ironmongery and access control package containing; hinges, locks, push and kick plates, signage, door closers, proximity readers, proximity lever handle sets, safety sensors and automatic door operators. The architect wanted to allow staff to control the access given to residents, without causing any disturbance or confusion. The way Allgood achieved this was by installing automatic door operators, push pads and proximity readers, Page 20 Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 Health 2015 Sponsored by: Harbrine HEALTH 2ND PLACE Project Name: Sir Robert Ogden MacMillan Centre Architect: IBI Nightingale Associates Architectural Ironmonger: Allgood plc Reason For Nomination: Manufacturing Support: Allgood supplied a tailored healthcare ironmongery schedule that included frequently touched items manufactured from an antimicrobial copper alloy with an appearance of stainless steel, to combat the spread of Healthcare Acquired Infections. A close collaboration between the Allgood manufacturing team and other suppliers allowed Allgood to deliver a high quality service to both IBI Nightingale associates and Sir Robert McAlpine. As a majority of the Contego range is manufactured internally, Allgood could easily manage the quality and lead time of our products, allowing us to be more flexible with our offering. Utilising our manufacturing skill set, we were also able to address any issues or questions swiftly, aiding the project to be delivered on time. Description Of Ironmongery: As always in a healthcare environment, it is imperative that good hand hygiene is maintained at all times to stop the cross contamination of bacteria between users of the hospital. As door furniture is an item that is frequently touched by many different people, the architect wanted an ironmongery solution that would protect against the cross contamination of Healthcare Acquired Infections (HCIS) whilst having a matching finish to rest of the mechanical hardware. Recent studies have shown that copper is inherently antimicrobial, killing 99.9% of bacteria within 2 hours of contact. Historically, most antimicrobial copper door furniture has a copper-like appearance but this would not meet the requirement of a stainless steel aesthetic. By using the unique Contego range of ironmongery formed from a proven antimicrobial copper alloy that has the appearance of stainless steel, Allgood were able to provide a solution that met the architect’s requirements. Most antimicrobial copper door furniture usually tends to use copper alloys that have a copper-like appearance, or use an antimicrobial finish which tends to be a less durable solution. Taking this into account Allgood developed the Contego range which utilises an innovative copper alloy that has antimicrobial properties with the appearance of stainless steel. The innovative alloy itself is antimicrobial, meaning that its antimicrobial properties are everlasting and still work scratched or chipped. This can be a common problem with antimicrobial finishes, whereas our manufacturing process allowed Allgood to supply a durable antimicrobial ironmongery solution that will still work when damaged. A full specification was created using Contego touch items such as lever handles, push plates, pull handles, WC turns and escutcheons complimented with satin stainless steel mechanical hardware such as signage, door closers, locks and kick plates. Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 Page 21 Health 2015 Sponsored by: Harbrine HEALTH 3RD PLACE Project Name: Southmead Hospital Architect: BDP Architects Architectural Ironmonger: Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw Reason For Nomination: Southmead Hospital is housed in the purpose-built Brunel building and brings the region’s acute healthcare facilities under one roof. It provides 800 beds, 75% of which are in single en-suite rooms – more than any other NHS hospital in the country. Additional Information (relating To The Ironmongery Specification): Working closely with all those involved in the construction process, from the design and specification stage through to completion, is central to Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s approach and played an integral part in the success of this development, explains contract manager Alan Vanstone: “We attended co-ordination meetings at BDP in Sheffield with the project architect and the Carillion design team manager on a weekly basis for a year. At these meetings we checked that the details for every doorset were suitable for its intended use and that all the ironmongery we were supplying was also compatible.” Leaderflush Shapland Laidlaw’s experience in the health sector and close relationship with Carillion ensured it was able to manufacture and install ‘integrated doorsets’ throughout the building, including in patient bedrooms, that satisfied the needs of the patients and the staff as well as helping to fulfill the building’s design ambitions. Page 28 Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 International 2015 Sponsored by: Samuel Heath INTERNATIONAL COMMENDED Project Name: Sports Hub, Singapore Architect: Elmich Keytech PTE Ltd Architectural Ironmonger: Arup Associates The complexity in the design & supply of ironmongery incorporating technical supports, integration with fire & building automation and production planning within a 14 month period for Sports Hub Singapore is unprecedented in KeyTech’s history. Built on a 35 hectare site and a construction costs of SG$1.3 billion, the Sports Hub Singapore is a 25-year Public-Private Partnership Design, Build, Finance & Operate project with a state-of-the-art fully integrated sports, entertainment and lifestyle hub that allow everyone in Singapore to watch, play and support sports and entertainment. Its existence provides a platform to elevate the Singapore sporting ecosystem on a regional and global scale and offer world-class facilities for sports, events, concerts, exhibitions and international trade shows. Sports Hub has been given 8 regional and international awards including ‘Sports Building of the Year’ at the recent prestigious World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards 2014. This is a key project in the Government of Singapore’s urban redevelopment that encourages sustainability, healthy and active society. It is made up of the following buildings: 1. National Stadium with 55,000 seat capacity 2. Multipurpose Indoor Games Hall (OCBC Arena) 3. Shopping Mall (Kallang Wave Mall & Splash-N-Surf) 4. Library, Museum & Visitor Centre 5. Office Block (Sport Singapore Office) 6. Car Park Building 7. Aquatic Centre (OCBC Aquatic Centre) 8. Water Sports Centre Hinges A combination of 127 x 89 x 3mm SS332 compliant stainless steel ball bearing grade 304 and 316 butt hinges are used to suit dry and wet / corrosive areas in each building respectively. Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 Door Controls In the general areas, Atena, SS332 COC & BS EN1154 compliant CE Marked. 88BC series fixed power backcheck door closers are used for plant rooms. 28A series adjustable power 2 – 5 backcheck door closers are fitted on all front of house, circulation and busy traffic areas in all the buildings. 660 series adjustable power 2 - 4 high efficiency concealed overhead door closers are chosen for the VIP area doors. To cope with the expected corrosive environment in the Aquatic Centre and Water Sports Centre, Geze, SS332 COC & EN1154 compliant CE marked 1500 series fixed power door closers are used for plant rooms. 2000 series adjustable power 2 – 4 and 4000 series adjustable power 1 – 6, adjustable backcheck door closers are used for different sizes of all front of house doors. Automatic Door Operators Geze TSA160 standard and slide arm automatic swing door operators are widely used in the National Stadium and the Multipurpose Indoor Games Hall on Make-Up Air Doors. This is a requirement in the local Fire Regulations and the automatic door operators are wired to the fire alarm system to allow automatic opening and holding of the doors in the opened position when there is a fire. There are also Make-Up Air Doors at the National Stadium that allow free passage during opening hours but required to be manually switched to controlled access mode at other times. These doors are accessed only by authorised key holders and egress with the use of thumbturn after opening hours. We proposed the use of mechanical night latch operated by cylinder / turn and with the use of Fail Safe electric strike and Maintained Contact key switch, to meet the operational requirements. In addition to this, the complete set up has to be linked up with a fire alarm system that cuts off the power supply to the Fail Safe electric strike and allows the automatic door operator to open the Make-Up Air Doors. However, the idea was scrapped afterward as the operators’ have a higher preference for access controlled point at individual rooms. Page 29 continued over page Reason For Nomination: International 2015 Sponsored by: Samuel Heath Electromagnetic Door Holder Geze 490N EN 1155 compliant Electromagnetic Door Holders are deployed for 1 hr fire timber door positioned right in front of the Cold Room door in the kitchen which swing in the same direction of escape (i.e. similar to a double layered door configuration with a small cavity in between the two door panels). This is to provide convenience for the kitchen operations but when there is a fire, this fire door will self-close to provide the compartmentation. Since fire door is required to be latched, there was fear that someone may get trapped inside the Cold Room when the fire alarm is activated. After proposing different solutions and talks with the Fire Officers, the addition of a Fail Safe electric strike was finally selected to allow anyone trapped within the Cold Room during a fire to open the Cold Room door which in turn pushes open the 1 hr fire timber door in the direction of escape. This is achievable as the Fail Safe electric strike allows the latch bolt to push through the released jaws during a fire without the need to retract the latch bolt with the lever handles. Locks & Cylinders As with the hinges and door control provisions, we provided two lock series for the complex. ECO Schulte GBS31 EN12209 Class 3 modular lock series (passage, privacy, deadlock, sash lock, night latch, anti-panic escape sash lock functions) with grade 304 stainless steel forends, strike plates, latch and dead bolts are used in general areas but for the Aquatic Centre and Water Sports Centre, we upgraded the locks to Dorma 300CE EN12209 Class 3 modular lock series (passage, privacy, deadlock, sash lock, night latch and classroom functions) to take advantage of their grade 316 stainless steel components for higher corrosive environment. Allgood 97000 series BS EN1303 6 pin dual profile / side bar; anti drill, anti-pick high security cylinders with sufficient differs are provided to suit the operators’ complicated master key suiting and security requirements. Provisions were allowed in the master key suite to cater for future Addition & Alternation and or Extension needs. Panic Exit Devices Since the Sports Hub Complex is a place of public assembly, the discharge volume in case of fire or an emergency could be very high. ECO Schulte EPN900 EN1125 CE Marked panic exit devices in Satin Stainless Steel finish are fitted on exit doors to facilitate escape and to give the aesthetics effect. External re-entry kit is provided at appropriate locations to suit the end users’ requirements. Door Furniture ECO Schulte D110 series OGL bearing technology 21mm diameter EN1906 compliant class 4 severe duty lever handles with safety return and 19mm / 32 mm diameter d pull handles in various length and fixings. Door furniture was manufactured either in grade 304 or 316 stainless steel for different areas of the project. Page 30 Bolts & Accessories Due to budget constraint, manual timber and metal doors flush bolts, automatic flush bolts & floor sockets, flush ring handles, floor door stops were sourced locally with some complying with SS332 performance requirements. Manufacturing Support: Elmich Keytech’s involvement in this project started with the preparation of the tender documents (door by door ironmongery schedule and specification) for the main contractor, Dragages Singapore. This covers the eight buildings with over 4,000 doors, grouped into three zones and built at staggering stages. Each zone was managed by a separate design and construction team with different timber, metal and louvred door suppliers. As with all Design & Build projects, the non-synchronized information on the general arrangement plans, door schedules (door size, fire & acoustic rating, access control requirements etc.) was a continuous saga. This resulted in repeated revisions for the ironmongery schedule and delay in the tendering process. Upon acceptance of our offer, our technical team checked all the doors shop drawings to finalise the ironmongery provisions. Needless to say, the delay in the order confirmation had left us with unrealistic production period across four major shut down period (Chinese New Year, Easter, Summer and Christmas & New Year Holiday) to catch up with the tight construction programme. The planning for the ironmongery production was tough but we got the full support from our entrusted British and European business partners by deploying their production facilities in different parts of the world to get round the holiday seasons and arrange the shipment in batches to cope with the installation schedules. Apart from providing templates and samples for items that need to cut into the door and frame for door factory preparation, we standardised strike plate size for all lock functions to ease door frame preparation in the factories and to allow flexibility in the change of use of the rooms that requires replacement of the modular lock function as works progress. A further standardization request came from one of the door manufacturers. After delivery of the goods, they requested DIN size eurocylinder deadlock for handicapped toilets to incorporate indicator / emergency release and a thumbturn of substantial size. We were able to source a special europrofile plug with a 5x5mm follower to control the cam mechanism and operate the deadbolt. Cylinder lengths were carefully verified with all door suppliers to ensure they were correctly ordered to suit various door thickness including doors with louvre cladding and acoustic property that require off-set length to match. Fire doors in Singapore need to be latched. This requires the use of automatic flush bolts and door selector on double leaf doors, which we usually don’t recommend to avoid possible problems arising from poor door / frame preparation and misalignment during installation. Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards 2014/15 International 2015 Sponsored by: Samuel Heath The situation gets more complicated when double leaf doors are fitted with electromagnetic locks as more emphasizes need to be placed during the coordination at technical workshops to correctly set out all ironmongery and other provisions from the access control system including the positioning of door position switches. We gained some new experience in the planning of the master key suiting for the Sports Hub Complex. There are 22 distinctive functional groups of end users covering 45 groups of sub-masters. Their needs on key management are quite diverse but we managed to align their ideas against practicality throughout the master key planning process.
