What this talk is about
10 mins, that's just the time required for Pirate3D to smash its funding goal of US$100K!
Pirate3D is setup in August 2012 by Roger Chang, Brendan Goh, Tsung Yun Jun and Neo Kok Beng.
It is the 1st company under the Institution of Engineers - Red Dot Ventures Incubation Scheme.
In this talk, the Pirate3D team will share their experience in the development of the world's most
affordable 3D printer - the Buccaneer, and in particular, the Kickstarter experience from strategies,
marketing and operations. They will cover the product vision, concept and development. It will be
a great sharing and learning session for aspiring technopreneurs.
This will be FIRST time that the COMPLETE Priate3D crew will make its full appearance after its
Kickstarter campaign ends on 29 Jun.
It is your earliest chance to interact with all of them close and upfront!
Who are we
Pirate3D was started last year by 3 graduates (materials science and business) and one
professor. We have played with 3D printers before and thought that we could build a better one
which everyone could use. Hence the dream was born!
We have two offices, our admin and marketing side is located in Palo Alto (which will also be the
branch that will handle all US orders) and our main Engineering division is located in Singapore
(which will handle the orders from the rest of the world).
This is to keep costs low so that our start up can survive as long as it can to keep creating
awesome products and value for our customers! We may be shuttling between these two places
depending on the situation but this is how it is right now.

The Team of 8 Strong People
1)Prof Kok Beng NEO (Co-Founder): The man who told them it was better to sell the 3D printers
rather than the 3D prints when they first started out. He is a seasoned technopreneur and was
leading a team building a pico 3D printer for cells waaaaaay back. He is in charge of the main
vision and charting where we need to go and do.
2) Roger CHANG (Co-Founder): CEO + Mechanical Specialist. He is a Business school graduate who
rather spends his time tinkering with machines. He has been playing with 3D printers for a couple
of years with kits and has a deep understanding of the pain of using an unrefined product. Being a
CEO, he gets blamed for everything. So if you find that your Buccaneer has a small nick, don't
blame a rough sea voyage, blame him.
3) You Jun TSANG (Co-Founder): UX/UI + Chief Designer. Eugene is a Materials Science graduate
but is by heart, a design maverick. When you look at the Buccaneer and its design as well as the
website etc, they all stem from his design vision. He says what looks good, what looks like crap
and how the user experience should be as painless as it can be. Along with the other co-founders,
he has been playing with 3D printers for a couple of years and that's what got him interested in
the field.
4) Brendan GOH (Co-Founder): Finances + Operations. Brendan and You Jun are elementary school
mates all the way to university. Brendan is also a Materials Science graduate but handles all
company finances and the operations side of things. If you are looking at the day to day running of
things, the implementation of schedules and making sure that everyone is "incentivized" on time,
he's your man. He loves this phrase from the SF Bay Area: "The beatings will stop when morale
improves!"

The Team of 8 Strong People
5) Kai ELVIN: Programming genius. Kai is a French guy who loves hanging out at hacker space and
has years of programming for many startups under his belt. If you want to see the man
responsible for creating Smart Objects it would be him. He is a very humble guy whom even
though is a genius will never admit to it but will show it off through his amazing speed at which he
innovates.
6) Titan Lee: Growth Hacker. Titan has spent a few years working on venture capital TV shows (I
am sure you have seen some of them) as a Media Stragist for their marketing division. He is
Roger's university buddy and is with us helping us on Web Marketing Strategies. He also works
together with You Jun and Kai to construct the entire web ecosystem and all the cool bits like
cloud printing.
7) Adil HUSSAIN: Marketing Specialist. He got to know the team near the inception of the
company. Adil is a really cool guy who has in depth knowledge about how the various markets
around the world work and how we should best approach them. He is the person in charge of
market strategy and best practices.
8) Xuming FENG: Mechanical genius. Where Kai is with programming, Xuming is with mechanics.
He has been in the industrial automation line for 20 odd years and has led many huge engineering
projects over his career. He decided to join us to build something that would really impact the
world and also in his pet niche, 3D printers.
That sums up the main perm team but there is a group of interns who are with us who are sterling
in their performance and hopefully will one day join us full time. Here's a shout out to our 3 PHD
guys who help us build the electronics + cloud capability of our printer!
