Our first month of 2016 has
come and gone as has my
first luncheon meeting as
your Big SIR. A very good
meeting it was with 69
members in attendance
and 3 guests and an excellent speaker.
I don’t think I screwed anything up in my first go
around but I have 11 more months to go so who
knows. Senior moments could always set in.
We have started the year out with 92 active members, an increase of 5 members over the previous
year. Though the goal of most SIR clubs is a plus
one, my goal is to reach 95 but I’d be thrilled if we
could end up with an even 100 members by next
December. I look to each and every one of you for
suggestions as to how we can improve our organization and have more fun along the way. Look
around your neighborhoods and your friends outside of SIR’s. Could there be someone you’ve
thought about bringing. February 11th would be a
great time as they’ll be serving one of our favorite
meals and Paul Kramer has another great speaker
lined up.
Our next big activity is on Valentine’s day at the
Imagination Theater in Placerville. Lend Me a Tenor should be lots of fun for all who are planning on
going.
I’m looking forward to a fun and exciting year at
SIR branch 113.

Jenkinson Lake can fill up, although my snow blower could use a workout. I look forward to seeing
more of you in February

Little SIR Report by Paul Kramer
Congratulations to Big Sir, Paul Ricci, on the way he conducted his first meeting of
the year. The luncheon meeting went very well. The presentation by Steve Beck
was great. It continued the story of John Sutter with lots of pictures and accompanying information.
Our speakers for February are two ladies representing the Friends of the Pollock Pines Library. They will
be speaking about the library and how their organization works to support the library and the various programs they have there. The speakers have yet to be
chosen by them. A big thank you to Moose Brown,
our community liaison, for directing them to me when
they requested to speak to our group.
When I attend the various functions of our Sir group, I am always amazed at the friendliness and camaraderie that everyone exhibits. Keep up the outstanding atmosphere.
Our menu for February is ribs, coleslaw, and baked beans. This is one of our top luncheon items for a reason. I can’t wait!
This is Valentines month and as Ron Depass shared at our last meeting, hug your loved one and hold her
close either in person or in your heart.

Bowling Report by Ray DiBasilio
Well, it’s time to get yourself and a couple of competitive friends to join us
at the Gold Dust West Casino and Bowling Center for our branchsponsored bowling tournament coming up April 11-14th. The format is singles, doubles, and team. You can bowl any or all and even enter doubles or
team more than once. This event is the second largest state-attended bowling activity. Last year we welcomed over 200 bowlers in Carson City for
four days of fun and relaxation. This year’s event is sure to be the same as
we reconnect with our out-of-town SIR friends.
Gold Dust West is again offering great room deals and fine dining – you
don’t even need to leave the facility! If you do, however, Carson City and the local areas are rich in
history, shops and attractions for leisurely exploration.
My wife, Cindy, and I, along with Cyndi Hanley, will be there to welcome you again this year. An
entry form is attached to this newsletter and can also be found at Knotty Pine Lanes and online on
the SIR bowling website.

“Lend Me A Tenor” - 2:00pm Matinee Sunday February 14th at the Imagination
Theater
Due to cancellations we have a few tickets left. If interested, please contact Russ ASAP.
When these tickets are sold anyone else wishing to attend this matinee performance
should purchase their tickets directly from the theater.
We had previously announced that we were going to meet for brunch at the Sportsman’s Hall for a preperformance brunch. OUR PLANS HAVE CHANGED!
Instead, we are going to have our preperformance brunch at the Camino Moose Lodge located at 4310 Eight Mile Rd., Camino 95709. Directions will be emailed to ticket holders. We’ll gather there at about 10:30 -11:00 AM. Their awesome Sunday breakfasts, Bloody Marys, and Mamosas are famous locally…….and very, very reasonably priced.
We’ll then carpool the short distance to the theater at 12:30–1:00 PM.
Live Theater in 2016
We have scheduled two additional live theater Sunday matinees for the 2016 season: “Cabaret” on Sunday July 31 at the Music Circus in Sacramento, and, “A Christmas Story” on Sunday December 11 at the
Imagination Theater in Placerville. As always, tickets will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. Mark
the dates on your calendar. Detailed flyers will be available in March. DON’T BE DISAPPOINTED – BUY
YOUR TICKETS AS SOON AS THEY ARE AVAILABLE.
River Cats in 2016
Sir Eric Jack has taken the lead to coordinate three River Cats day games in 2016. He has already negotiated with the team’s Group Sales Executive for a group discount for 25 Solon box seats for each game (in
the shade) behind home plate. Mark your calendars……the three day games are:
Monday April 18 – River Cats vs. Salt Lake City Bees
Wednesday May 11 – River Cats vs. Reno Aces
Monday September 5 (Labor Day) – River Cats vs. Fresno Grizzlies
Flyers will be posted on our website and the SIR bulletin board at Knotty Pine Lanes and be available at
monthly meetings beginning in early February. We expect a quick sellout for each game so purchase your

Other Events in 2016
We’re in the talking stages of planning several other events for 2016: a wine tasting/picnic/Bocce tournament at Palisandro Winery in May, a Bottle Your Own Day at Mitchell Winery in November, SIR vs. Moose
and Branch 113 8-Ball Pool and Bowling tournaments, Annual Flea Market, and more.
WANTED: Volunteers to help arrange and coordinate activities in 2016
We need volunteers to assist in arranging and presenting some of the activities in 2016 such as wine tastings, annual flea market, 8-Ball Pool Tournaments, SIR Nights at Placerville Speedway, and day trips. We
will train and assist you.

To-dos for 2016
Fitness and diet routinely figure into people’s New Year’s resolutions, but they usually turn
out to be short-term commitments that are abandoned quickly.
Instead, consider focusing your resolutions on slowly and steadily improving your home
and financial future. That’s work that will pay off well beyond 2016.
Home energy audit. Schedule an energy audit through your local utility company to identify the upgrades that will immediately reduce utility costs.
Green your home. Pick some green upgrades and do one each month. They can be simple 10-minute projects, such installing LEDs or using power strips to cut phantom electricity
loads. More major projects include replacing appliances with Energy Star-rated models and sealing your
home.
Refinance your mortgage. The Feds are making noise about hiking interest rates, so look into whether
refinancing your mortgage would be beneficial.
Spring garden. When you’re choosing new flowers and shrubs for your spring garden, consider creating a
more eco-friendly yard. Possibilities include removing some or all of your lawn and devoting the space to
growing food. Also look at incorporating native plants, eliminating fertilizers, and composting food waste.
Age-in-place upgrades. Take steps to make aging in place possible. When you do home upgrades, make
choices with your long-term well-being in mind. For example, install lever-style doorknobs when you
change doors and add handrails when you redo your stairs.
Emergency preparedness. It’s always good to have a plan for emergencies, whether those are widereaching natural disasters or a local power outage.
Will updates. Review your will and those named as beneficiaries on your accounts. This is especially important if you’ve had a life change, such as a new grandchild or if you’ve divorced or lost a loved one.
End-of-life wishes. Draw up and sign a living will and designate someone to serve as your medical powerof-attorney. It will save your family grief and ensure that your end-of-life wishes are respected.
Fall prevention. Falls are the leading cause of injury among people who are age 65 and older, and
homes can teem with fall dangers. So when you’re doing your safety walk-through, also look for and eliminate fall dangers.
Image your future. Do you dream about travel or becoming expert in an art form? Investigate your options
and develop a loose plan about ways to weave your desires into your future. Then edit your desires based
on your physical and fiscal circumstances.

Castaways Fishing Club The club goes on monthly fishing trips to local lakes and rivers plus several
deep sea trips annually. Meets on the last Friday of
each month at Denny’s Restaurant in Placerville
where the location of the following month’s fishing

Bowling Members participate in local senior & SIR
leagues & SIR tournaments statewide. Beginners

Sunday February 14, 2016 - 2:00 PM Matinee

Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me A Tenor has delighted audiences world-wide for over 25 years and received nine
TONY awards since it was first performed in London’s West End and on Broadway.
World-renowned tenor Tito Merelli (called Il Stupendo) has signed on to play Otello at a Cleveland opera
company in the fall of 1934. This is a huge event for Cleveland. He arrives late and, through a set of crazy
circumstances, passes out after mixing wine with a huge dose of tranquilizers. Believing that the divo is
dead, the excitable opera manager orders his hapless assistant, an aspiring singer named Max, to suit up
as Otello and replace Merelli. All goes well until Morelli’s untimely return, also in costume. Meanwhile, Morelli’s jealous wife, his ambitious female co-star, Max’s girlfriend and the flirtatious head of the opera guild
are on the scene fighting – sometimes literally – for the star’s attention. Mayhem follows as the two Otellos
are mistaken for each other. This is a wonderful comedy and is a classic farce that wins big laughs from
mistaken identity, mixed signals and misunderstandings.
We originally reserved only 40 premium seats for the 2:00 PM matinee on Sunday February 14, 2016.
Those tickets sold out quickly. We have purchased ten more and will offer them on a first come first served
