The conditions on which the union of .the CALCU1'1'A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL BOOK SOCIE1'Y with the CALCUTTA '. CHRISTIAN'l'RACT AND BOOK SOCIETY was concluded on the 13th of May 1859, are as follows : I.-That a special Department be est.ablished and maintained in connection with the TRAC1' SOCIJijl'Y for the production and circulation of good Christian School-Books, under the name of· the CHRISTIAN -8ClIOOL-BoOK DEP ARTMEN~I.'. II.-That a special School-Book Sub-Oommittee be appointed and maintained in connection with the General Committee, for the efficient working of the Department. IlL-That in consideration of the valuable proper- . ty, estimated ·in money and stock at about Rs. 9,000, now possessed by the Christian School-Book Society, and handed oyer for the special Department of the Tract Society named,-a separate account be kept of all the receipts and expenditure connected with the Department, with a view to maintain perpetually for its use a working capital not less in value than the amount with which it can now be commenced. THE SIXTY-THIRD REPORT OF THE CALCUTTA for the ei,dhteen 7nonths end.ing Septembell 30th, 1893 . • AT the last Annual Meeting attention was drawn to the fact that the Report then presented was for a period ending some nine months previously, and that, consequently, public interest in the matter.s under l"eview was in danger of being somewhat remote. The Oommittee shortly afterwards decided to remove this difficulty by adopting the date of September 30th, as being henceforth the end of the Society's Year. Renee the present Report, inaugurating the new order, is for a period of eighteen months. It will be seen, from figures presently to be given, that the work of the Society has been carried on during the period with unabated vigour, and from testimonies received, we can confidently say, with undiminished usefulness. We give praise to Almighty God for the tokens of His favour which have encoura, ged us in onr efforts, and we earnestly pray for such fuller blessing as shall bring greatt:r zeal, greater wisdom, and greater prosperity. We are grateful to the many friends who have assisted in . the carrying on of our important undertaking; to those who 1 2 IHXTY-THIRD REPORT OF THE have by literary work, by sagacious counsel, by diligent toil in the distribution of our literature or by their generous gifts, helped to further the great business in which we are engaged. W 0 confidently look for a continuance of their kindly interest, and, in some particulars, for an increase in their endeavours. We would particularly emphasize two or three points. The contributions to the Society's funds need to be con~ siderably increased. Of late years the tendency has been in the other direction, and we are quite sensible of the many difficulties of trade, and commerce,. and finance, which have helped to contribute to this state of things. At the same time, we believe that our friends will not willingly allow this work to languish for lack of funds. We hope that many who do not now contribute will have their names put on the Subscribers list, and that those who are already assisting us in this manner will find themselves able to increase their gifts. The Subscriptions for the 18 months amounted to Rs. 2,253. During the past year the Society received a contribution of Rs. 50 from Miss Tucker, the well-known" A. L. O. E.," whose books were familiar companions to many of us in our younger days. This devoted servant of God, who gave her last days to the evangelization of the women of India, has now passed to her reward. The Committee would place on record its sense of the valuable service which she rendered to the cause of the Tract Society .for so many years, and wonld glorify God for her useful and inspiring life. We desire to recommend strongly the purchase and sale of the Society's publications. As .is explained later on, our work is to a great extent gratuitous, and we fear that this opens the door to a careless.ness which may become a little demoralizing. As opportunity occurs, let missionaries and others earnestly endeavour to secure the purchase of publications which are worth, and cost, far more tba:n the inoney paid, but which, because of the price, are sure to be read, and prized, and preserved. We would further direct special attention to the later paragraphs on the business concerns of the Society, over the signature of the Rev. J. A. Macdonald. The issues of the Sor.iety for the eighteen months have amounted to 1,584,077, the bulk of these being small tracts for free distribution; but there have also been several publications of a much more important character, which are referred to in a separate section of the Report. CALCUTTA CHRISTIAN TRACT AND BOOK SOCIETY. The list of IBsu~s 3 is as follows:- English Bengali Mnssalmani Bengali Other Indian Languages Languages of Continental Enrope Companion V olnmes for Students School Books ... 346,582 1,1]8,785 36,775 60,513 6,450 5,129 9,843 1,584,077 This llum ber is about equal to the highest ever reached in the same length of time. Assistance has been given, by grants of paper, to the India Sunday School Journal, the Amnder Patrika, tbe Gleaner, the Evangelist, and Friendly Greetings; and also to several missionary workers for the production of tracts and Christian books. In recent months action has been taken which will seriously affect the future of the Society, and we trust, tend to its much greater usefulness. Seventeen years ago the Department of General Bookselling was commenced in the hope that the profits would add a substantial sum to the grants at our disposal for our proper work. The hope was not realized, and the venture resulted, on the whole, in a considerable loss. We have stopped the leakage by stopping the most serious portion of the General Department of our business, and our energy will now be chiefly concentrated on the sale of the Religious Tract Society's Publications, the proceeds of which are entirely given to the prosecution of our work. On this subject Mr. Macdonald says something which we trust will receive sympathetic attention. In conclusion, we have to tender our most thankful acknowledgments to the Religious Tract Society of London for their generous gra~t of £250 a year, together with gifts of paper, sufficient to meet the demands of all our work. W H. H. 4 SIXTY-THIRD REPORT OF 'l'HE THE RECENT PUBLIOATIONS OF THE SOCIETY. During the period covered by t.his Report the following new books and tracts have been printed :-The Commentary on the Prophets: by Mr. Rouse, of the B. M .. S., has been com pleted during the year. It is a Royal 8vo. volume of 470 ·pages. It is uniform with the Commentary on the New Testament published by the Baptist Missionary Society, except that the notes are briefer, and there is no collection of parallel passages. Ma.ny such passages, however, are referred to in the notes. New editions have been published of Martyrology, and Brooks's Precious Remedies. The previous eq.itions of these book,s were printed· many years ago, and the Bengali style had to be considerably altered in order to bring it up to date. An Anna-book for children has been brought out, called Little Nannette. For use among the women of India, a little book, a translation from Englisl1, has been published, called Widows and the Bible, by the late Miss Tucker (A. L. O. E.), showing the comfort and instruction which can be obtained from some of the Bible narratives regarding widows. A· tract called An Infant's lJeath, has been brought out, in order to comfort parents who have lost a little one. Two tracts have been translated from English, and published, on Jesus as a Philanthroput, and The Prayerfulness of Jesus. The Life of Kamal contains an account of a humble Garo Christian, who lived and died in Christ. The Mirror of the Heart, the Old, Old Story, Precious Songs, the Elementary Catechism, and other books in constant demand, have been re-printed. The last-mentioned book, Elementary Catechism, has been translated into two other languages,-Santaliand Manipuri. The tracts on the Hindu deities, caned An Account of Kali, &c., have been revised, and to some extent re-written. The small tract called The Bible, which contains a brief account of its contents, has also· been re-written. T4e Child's Friend has been issued as usual, 5,000 copies, of eight 'numbers a year, at the cost of the Children's Special Service Mission in England. The Society feels under deep o~ligation to that Mission for the efficient help it has thus rendered for so many years. The two monthly Series, the Monthly Messenger and the Zenana Leaflet, have been continued. The series has been carried on without a break for a.bout ] 3 years. Of the former 20,000, and of the latter 15,000, are now printed every month. The increase in the number issued shews that these tracts tmpply a felt need. CALCUTTA CHRISTIAN TRACT' AND BOOK SOCIETY. ;) :The following English pamphlets have been issued, most of which are new :-The Story of my Conversion, by Mr. A. T. Nag. The Atonement, and A Brahman Oonvert's Testimony for Christ: by B. C. Chatterjea, Esq., Sub-Judge, Rajshaye. Five Papers for Though~ful Men: by James Monro, Esq., C. B.-Orr Restlessness, Compromise, Retrogressive Progress, The Universality of the Christian Gospel, and The .Development of Hinduism. What Jesus said of Himself: by Dr. K. S. Macdonald; Christ's Teaching about Himself: by Dr. Stalker, and Christianity and some of its Evidences: by Sir Oliver Mowat, Premier of Ontario. . G. H. R. HOW TO HELP THE TRACT SOCIETY. After nine months' experince of the working of the Chowringhee Depot, I have been enabled to form a very clear idea of the position and needs of the Calcutta Tract Society. Some matters which have already been reported to the Committee, and which have received their endorsement, ought to be made known to the general body of our supporters. I have found that very few of the best friends of the Society realise how much support it ought to receive at the present juncture. PUSH THE SALES OF THE SOCIETY'S PUBLICATIONS. - The strong point of the Calcutta Tract Society is its issues of gratuitous tracts. In this line it has no rival in India, and the Missions are helped in this manner to a considerable degree. But the selling series of books and tracts is very poor, and the amount realised by sales is no more now than it was seventeen years ago. In other parts of India it has been found necessary to make a determined effort to sell Christian publications, and wherever this has been done the results have amply justified the policy. The present condition of things is a loud call to all missionaries to push the sale of Christian books. RAISE FUNDS FOR THE WORK. The total income raised from subscriptions is almost all expended in the gratuitous tracts which are so freely supplied to all a,pplicants. N ow it must be evident that unless th.e in90me from the sales of Society's. pUblications increase, it -will be utterly impossible to provide the books which are so needed for the work of the Missions in every department. 6 SIXTY-THIRD REPORT OF THE At present the sales show a tendency to decline, because tbe stock of th~ Society cannot be properly replenished. Printipg of everything' but gratuitous tracts is all but. stopped. It is evident that a small income of about two thousand rupees yearly can never effect very much for the teeming millions of Bengal. The second great need is, theref{)re, to increase the funds for publication work. BUY R. T. S. ENGLISH BOOKS. There is another manner in which the funds of the Society may be largely increased. It is not known even to all missionaries that .-the Religious Tract Society of London makes a generous grant of £250 worth of English books. If these books are all sold the equivalent of £250 would be available for the purposes of the, Society. But of late years, the sales of these books have diminished to the extent of Rs.1,000 annually. Now when it was decided to supply the works of ordinary publishers in a Depot which was largely built by the generosity {)f the London Tract Society, it was never intended that the sales of their books should Buffer by the arrangement. But unfortunately this has been the result, because the buyers of books have not realised ~hat when they bought books published by the London Tract Society, every anna which they paid was available for religious publication work in the country, whereas a similar book of another publishing-house when bought yields only a scanty margin of profit to the depot, and in some cases no profit at all. In selecting books for Sunday School libraries and for many other purposes, it is as easy to make the choice from the Religious Tract Society's list as from any other, and we earnestly beg our friends to help us to ta.ke full advantage of the London Society's generosity, and also to show our sense of gratitude to them by extending the dissemination of their excellent books. THE DEPOT. With regard to the internal arrangements of the Dep6t, I think it should be known. that every effort will be made to obUge and to a&ai~t all misaion~rie8 and Christian work.Brs. We :gave laid down the principle tbat the Dep8t exists for .the purpose of aiding in the work of evangelising the CQ,UI)try, and we trust tbat our friends intbe Mofussil will _wake use of it to a degree which h~B not been the case CALCUTTA CHRISTIAN TRACT AND BOOK SOCIETY. 7 hitherto. WhateV'er can, in reason, be demanded of them, the staff at the Bible House will be only too delighted to undertake. JAS. ALEX. MACDONALD. THE TESTIMONY OF CHRISTIAN WORKERS. THE ACCEPTANCE AND THE USEFULNESS OF THE SOCIETY'S PUBLICATIONS. Instead of publishing o~r own estimate of the value of the tracts, &c., put forth by the Society, we. reproduce a few extracts from letters received from missionaries and others who make constant use of the aid' which they afford. The Rev.G. H. ROllse gives the following interesting incident, a case very much to the point ; I was recently sitting in my study, when word was brought that a babu wished to see me. A bright-looking young man came in and sat down. I asked what he wanted. He said, "I was brought up a, Mohammedan, in the Krishnagar District; some years ago I became a Christian. I have studied at Krishnagar, and in the C. M. S. College at Allahabad, and I am now studying in the C. M. S. Divinity School in Calcutta. - I have come to see you, simply in order to tell you that it was your Mussulman-Bengali tracts which led to my conversion. 'Jesus, or Muhammad: on whom shall we trust?' was the one which most moved me: but all have been useful. I have distributed' a great many copies of them." He also mentioned the names of three or four other Mahommedans, whom he knows, who have become Christians through these tracts. I need not say how thankful I was to hear these statements. I never saw a brighter or happier face than that which the young man had when he was talking of his faith in Christ; and I trust that after these years of preparation, this happy and active young Christian may be much blessed to his fellow-countrymen who are still in the dark. I may add, that the Madras Tract Society Report speaks of a Moulvie at Bellary, who was converted through reading one of the tracts, "Fateh," which bas been translated into U rdn. MISS PARSONS, of Faridpore, writes as follows : I am glad to mention one or two instances of the usefulness of the Society's Publications. 1. A zenana woman who Wfl.8 almost persua~ed was helped in t.he light very much by the tract, "Doorga PooJahP She said it helped to clear away many of her doubts. I had a very great demand for this tract; so much so that I had to send for three times the usual quantity of that special publication. 8 SIXTY-THIRD REPORT OF THE 2. There have been several other interesting cases where the women ha:ve fonnd help from the "Zenana Leaflet." There is also a great demand for the Monthly Leaflets in the village~. 3. When our Sunday School boys go to their homes in the distant villages, we have been able to send tracts and small books to their parents, which we found usef:u.l in preparing the ground for work for us as we go into the Mofussil. Many women have had Gospel teaching in this way. I sincerely hope that before long the zenana women will be able to have more of such literature in their homes than iu the past. Yours Sincerely, AMY PARSONS. The following is from MR. H. C. RAHA, of the Oxford Mission Press : " I distribute tracts to the people of Eastern Bengal who come to Kalighat, and whom I visit at their lodging-houses. .They take our tracts eagerly: many would ask for a particular tract, which they would say was given them last year. 1'his happens very often." THE REV. T. K. CHATTERJI says.-" The Monthly Messengers, and Zenana Leaflets published by the Tract Society, are of great help to me in my work. "I have adopted a plan, suggested tome by the Rev. A. P. Begg, B. A., by which the m~mbers of the congregation under my charge have become much interested in reading the Tracts and distributing them to their non-Christian Il:eighbours. From time to time, I ask the people who assemble in our Church on Sundays for D"ivine worship, each to receive a Tract, and read it first, and then to give it away to some non-Christian, with a prayer that God's blessings may rest on this effort." THE REV. W. Y. MCCULLOCH of Hooghly, speaks thus:" All the workers in this Mission constantly express to me their sense of the great usefulness of the tracts. During the 9 months of this year, ending October 31st: they have distributed over 22,000 of these, in connection with the work of preaching. Everything possible is done to secure that these should not be given away except. when likely to be read; over 2,000 of the books and booklets 6f your Society and the C. L. S. have been sold in the course of the same period. These books are found to be very useful, as many will buy. them who absolutely refuse to touch what they know to be the Christian Scriptures proper. Many of my Preachers have repeatedly described to me experiences of this kind. I, myself, have found many Hindus willing to read ~.' CALCUTTA CHRISTIAN :TBACT" AND BOOK SOCIETY. 9 The REV. P. H. MOORE, of Nowgong, gives the following testimony:" The tracts &c., received, have been regularly distributed in the bazaars and to people whom we incidentally meet, and as a general thing they are readily accepted.! would be very sorry not to have them to distribute here. " If we could have the same ip. our own vernacular they would be still more useful; but even in a foreign tongue they are very acceptable for our work here. May God's blessing ever rest on the Word!" Much more could be said, the instances given will show how useful an auxiliary the Missionaries consider the work of the Tract Society. 2 '10 APPENDIX t. APPENDIX I.
