Dear Bayou Bash Friends,
Welcome to Horizon Academy’s largest fundraiser! As a guest of the
event, you are part of a twelve-year tradition that has raised nearly $2
million for students with learning disabilities. Our mission to provide a
caring and respectful environment for our students continues because of
individuals like you!
Horizon Academy opened its doors to just 12 students in 1999. Since,
we have given over 330 students the opportunity to achieve their highest
potential, become lifelong learners, and develop into productive,
responsible citizens of their community.
This year, 45% of our student population received scholarships. These
funds come directly from what we raise here tonight. Thank you for

What is Horizon Academy?
We are experts in helping children with learning disabilities.
 Horizon Academy is the only private, fully accredited school for students with learning
disabilities in the Kansas City area.
 Our staff is made up of highly trained specialists who understand a child’s individual needs.
 We utilize the Orton-Gillingham instructional approach, which is intended primarily for use
with persons who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing of the sort associated with
dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. This multisensory approach is diagnostic,
prescriptive, systematic, structured and personalized to meet the needs of the learner.
 An affiliation with the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning enables us to use
multi-sensory, evidence-based teaching methods, specially designed to help our students succeed.
We focus on the whole child.
 Teaching the right set of learning strategies along with social skills and self-advocacy allows our
students to become life-long learners.
 With a low student to teacher ratio in each classroom, Horizon Academy students receive the
individual attention they need in a quiet learning environment designed for student success.
We are results driven.
 After students acquire the skills necessary to be successful, they typically return to a more
traditional school or learning environment.
 Many students who have transitioned from Horizon Academy are now on the honor roll,
graduating from college, or holding professional jobs.
History of Horizon Academy
Horizon Academy is the result of the efforts of dedicated parents concerned about the
progress of their children in traditional schools. Combining the advice received from
national educational consultants, research from the Midwest Research Institute, and input
from local parents, educators and physicians, a vision and master plan for Horizon Academy
emerged.
In September 1999, Horizon Academy opened its doors to 12 Kansas City area students.
Today, up to 100 students can benefit from the specialized program. Horizon Academy
students work to gain the academic, social and self-esteem skills necessary to reach their
highest potential, and since our beginning, 330 students have successfully returned to a
traditional school setting.

specific learning disability and receive special education support. Over
70,000 of these students are in the Kansas City metro area.

Auction Information & Rules
General Information:
1. Horizon Academy enjoys exempt status under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code. Gifts to the school are deductible for income tax purposes as
prescribed by the code. Under current tax law, Horizon Academy is required to assert
specific language in acknowledging contributors, and under certain circumstances, to
advise donors of requirements that may pertain to the contribution. All donors to the
Auction receive appropriate acknowledgment meeting these requirements.
2. Cash contributions to Horizon Academy are included in total giving for recognition in
the appropriate gift club in the annual report.
3. Only the amount in excess, if any, of the fair market value of an item purchased can be
considered a charitable contribution. Fair market value is the amount a willing buyer
would pay a willing seller on an open market. For auction items, the fair market value is
the value listed beside the item in the program.
4. If an item is sold at or below fair market value at the auction, no part of the price will
qualify as a deductible contribution.
5. If the fair market value cannot be determined, for one-of-a-kind articles such as art,
autographed items, or party packages, the IRS is likely to say that the price paid for the
item at the auction is the fair market value. In this situation, no part of the purchase
price would be considered a deductible contribution.
6. Neither any representative of the school nor any representative of the auction may
engage in the practice of law by advising a donor as to the specifics of deductibility. It is
always recommended that all donors to Horizon Academy consult their own financial
advisors as to the specific extent of deductibility.
7. Successful bidders may pay for purchases with cash, check, MasterCard, Visa, American
Express or Discover. Payment must be made in full the night of the auction.
8. Items may be removed only by presenting a “paid” receipt at the silent auction tables or
live auction merchandise claim area.
9. All sales are final. There will be no refunds or exchanges, except where specified. Any
guarantees are according to manufacturers’ warranties.
10. Please honor the terms and conditions of any item you buy. If for some reason the
donor does not honor the terms and conditions, please contact Horizon Academy to
discuss a refund.
11. By his or her purchase, the buyer waives any claims for liability against either Horizon
Academy or the donor of the property or services. Neither Horizon Academy nor the
donor is responsible for any personal injuries or damages to property that may result
from the use of property or services sold.
12. Values of items being auctioned are donor’s estimates and are not warranted by
Horizon Academy for tax purposes or for general value.

Express Pay:
How Do I Bid Tonight?
Swipe your card at check-in and decrease your check-out time later! If you
DON’T win, you’re NOT charged. At check-out you’ll just pick up your receipt
and items. That’s it!
Silent Auction:
Each item in the silent auction has a bid sheet. To bid, print your bid number next
to the bid amount on the sheet. Each new bid must be written on the next
available blank line on the bid sheet.
1. Under no circumstances may the auction bid sheet be removed from the
silent auction table.
2. Use only your bid number to bid on items.
3. Each increase in bid must equal or exceed the minimum increase stated on
the bid sheet, in order to constitute a valid bid. Silent auction bids will be
disqualified if increase is not sufficient.
4. In the event of a dispute, an auction official shall determine the winner. Only
an authorized auction official may nullify a bid.
5. The Silent Auction sections will be open for bidding at 5:30 p.m. and closing
table-by-table beginning at 7:30 p.m. The closing bid circled by the auction
official constitutes the winning bid.
6. Check-out for the Silent Auction will begin at 9:30 p.m.
Fund-a-Need for Scholarships:
Our goal is to raise $25,000 for need-based scholarships tonight during fund-aneed, following the video. ANY amount is appreciated! Raise your bid card to
donate!

Live Auction:
1. To bid on an item, raise your bidder card.
2. The final bid at close of each item will be recorded on your bid number by
the auction clerks.
3. The Live auction will begin with the auctioneer at approximately 8:40 pm.
4. Time restrictions applying to a service or to the use of a facility must be
strictly observed. Where services are involved, arrangements are to be made
between donor and buyer within the designated time period, as outlined in
the auction program or on the gift certificate.
5. Check-out for the Live Auction will begin at 9:30 pm.
Checkout Instructions:
1. Check-out is located in the registration room where you checked in.
2. Payment must be made in full the night of the auction. We accept cash, check,
Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover.
3. Winning bidders will be responsible for collecting their items from the
auction tables. After you have gone through check-out with Express Pay or a
Cashier, you will be emailed a receipt. After payment is made, check in with a
volunteer in the silent auction room with the list of your purchases. They will
help you retrieve your item(s).
4. Horizon Academy will hold auction items for
up to one week following the event.
Check-out will close at 11:00 pm.

Heads or Tails Game
Do you make good choices??
Make all the right choices tonight in our Heads or Tails game and
you’ll go home with a four-course Dinner for 10 at Jazz a
Louisiana Kitchen that includes a $150 bar tab ($500 value).
Each player has one or three chances.
One chance for $10. Volunteers will be walking around selling Glow
Rings. If you buy one of these Glow Rings, you are eligible to keep
playing as long as you continue making the right choices!
How does it work?
After the Live Auction, Board President, Mike Koeppen will welcome
everyone and auctioneer, Tanna Guthrie, will start the game.
Everyone with a Glow Ring will stand up to play at their table.
Before a coin is flipped, Tanna will ask you to put your hands on
your head if you think the coin will flip to “heads” and put your
hands on your rear-end if you think the coin will flip to “tails”. Mike
will flip a coin.
If you are correct, you remain standing and keep playing. If
you are wrong, you sit down.
Who wins?
The last person standing is the winner and can pick up their prize at
check out.

French Quarter Experience
Enjoy a two night stay, Friday to Sunday, in a luxury condo that sleeps four in the French
Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. This once-in-a-lifetime experience includes a tour of the

Association. Good for a mutually agreeable weekend between February 12, 2016 - February 1,
2017 .
The condo has a no smoking and no pet policy. The maximum number of guests is four total. If
a guest wanted to stay additional nights, it would be $500 per night, not exceeding 5 nights
total. Please note that this condo is a private residence and if for some reason it is not
available, the winner will be put up in two suites around the corner at a beautiful hotel.
