Message from the President
As you know by now, October is approaching and our
orchid show is just around the corner. Valerie Foster,
the show chair, is working very hard on the planning
and preparations, but we still need your help for the
show to be a complete success. You can support your
club by volunteering to work at the show and having
lots of fun with your friends!
Ruben Sauleda’s talk was a complete success at the last meeting, the topic could not have been more well-chosen, his raffle table was a real treat
and the plants he sold were wonderful, just as expected. Attendance
was very good, and everyone gave Ruben a warm welcome and many
of you brought awesome food and refreshments. Thanks to one and all,
and especially Ruben, for making the meeting such a success.
The speakers this month, from Broward Orchid Supplies, promise to be
entertaining and educational, so be ready for another treat (it’s just one
after another--we don’t get bored in this society). I am sure that you
will leave the meeting with new solutions for orchid care.
Please keep checking the EEOS website and Facebook page for updates
on the show, newsletters and other related information.
The rainy season continues strong and steady—I hope your precious
orchids don’t suffer too much and that you have been able to fertilize
them per schedule (I haven’t). Remember that you always can come to
the club for help, because we have the experts available and willing to
assist.
Once again I want to remind you that you can bring any suggestion
or idea you may have to help the Society continue to be the best in the
area. We deeply appreciate any help you can provide.
I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting!!

Show Updates
It is once again that time of year when we make plans for our annual orchid show.
Our show is now less than a month away and each year we make it a success thanks to all the efforts of our
dedicated members. Last year was a great show and I hope to make it even better this year. A lot of our members gave a lot of their time at the membership table and at our cooking tent.
We will again serve lunch on all 3 days of the show and I will be very happy to get some members
help at that tent. And of course we will need your help at the membership table as well. It is a great way for
us to recruit new members and sell raffle tickets which help fund our budget quite a bit. If you would like to
volunteer for one of the shifts, please contact me @ 305 903-0630.
It is also a great time to show off your beautiful orchids and I would encourage you to enter your plants for
judging by loaning your plants for the exhibit or by entering them individually. I will talk more about all of
this at our next meeting.
And then finally, I will welcome all the help I can get for the setup of the show on Wed. Oct 13th and
tear down on Sunday.
Thank you!

Guest Speaker
Our speakers this month will be Sandi Jones and Tom Wells, co-owners of Broward Orchid
Supply, Orchid Curators at the Bonnet House Museum & Garden in Ft. Lauderdale, orchid
hobbyist with about 400 orchids of their own and over 30 years of combined growing experience. Broward Orchid Supply is pleased to say they just celebrated their 4th anniversary.
At this lecture, Tom will be demonstrating repotting of an overgrown orchid and how to mount
orchids on tree fern, cork bark, grapevine & cypress. Common questions like what size/type
of pot or basket to use, what type of potting media and what orchids are best for mounting will
be addressed. General cultural information and when to use what, i.e., fertilizers, fungicides,
pesticides will also be discussed.
Orchid supplies will be available for sale at the meeting, but, of course, there’s not room to
bring some of everything, so members are requested to call or e-mail ahead to place specific
orders: 954-925-2021 or browardorchidsupply@comcast.net.

Encyclia of the Month
— by Mirta Russis-Heineman
Encyclia alata
This species is found from Mexico to Costa Rica.
In the wild they may grow as terrestrial in white sand
areas. The plants are tough and will do well in
baskets or on slabs hung in sunny locations in the
greenhouse. They are very easy to grow.
They flower in the late spring and summer,
sometimes to the fall. In nature they
grow in dry forest at elevations from 100 to 800
m. It grows long inflorescences, up to 80 in. long
and even many times branched, that may last 4 or 5
weeks. It is very easy to find them in private collections.

Culture winner
Now is a good time to start fertilizing your orchids for our Orchid Show next month. Be sure
you groom and stake orchids that are coming into bloom. Make sure you put out snail bait or
else those pesky snails can eat your blooms overnight!
Soon, we should see slight change of weather (no more 85 degree nights!) and we can wake up
to cooler mornings. Many orchids will sense this change and start blooming.
We have an orchid that has received the culture award this month! Haydee Navas received a
culture for her beautiful Cynoches William Clarke . Her plant displayed 27 flowers and 3 buds
on a pendulous inflorescence. These well displayed flowers were yellow-brown with a bright
yellow column. Congratulations, Haydee! Other awards are as follows:
