a note from the director
Dear Friends, Panto at The Playhouse and the holidays are back. How wonderful it is to proclaim that phrase once again! As many of you know, it was long my hope to create an ongoing theatrical holiday tradition here at our beautiful theatre. As you also know, I am always interested in doing something slightly different than you might find at other much-to-be-admired theatres in our community. So, while I greatly appreciate that well-known tale by Mr. Dickens, my hope was for us to go in another direction. I could not be more pleased that we found our own special way to celebrate the holidays at our theatre, in collaboration with Lythgoe Family Productions. For the third year in a row, we bring the delights, frivolity, visual splendor, and musical magic of Panto to our stage, unveiling this new production of Sleeping Beauty and Her Winter Knight. I am especially pleased that for the first time, the Panto is deservedly a part of our regular subscription series. And I am even more thrilled that this choice has been so warmly greeted by our subscribers, many of whom will experience this delightful theatrical form for the first time—hopefully along with other members of their family! We welcome our regular patrons and also those of you who are here for the first time. We are delighted to have you at home here at The Playhouse for the holidays. Many thanks to Bonnie, Kris, and Becky Lythgoe for all that they do to bring this holiday magic to OUR theatre. And my gratitude to our wonderful cast and all of the artists involved in bringing this “Beauty” to life. These tales often inspire us to make a wish. One of my wishes is that our partnership will allow us to share the joys of Panto on our stage for many, many seasons to come! Happy Holidays, Sheldon Epps Artistic Director of The Pasadena Playhouse A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR The Pasadena Playhouse is just the best place to be during holiday time. This is my winter, my love, my place. I can hardly believe this is our third season as it seems like only yesterday when I walked through the doors of darkness into the light of the magical theatre. This is where it all happens with the stage, the technical team, the volunteers, the office team, the actors, the audience, and the man at the helm, Sheldon Epps. Now my goal is to make the Opening Night a night to remember and hope the audience members clap, cheer, and walk away laughing and happy. Not an easy task! Throughout rehearsals I go from worried, to worried, to maybe, to yes. Then I wonder why I put myself through the same anxiety every year and go back for more. But then I walk outside to the Courtyard and see the rosy cheeks and wonderment on the children’s faces and know all the stress and hard work was worth every dollar. All the show needs is a sprinkle of fairy dust throughout the air and the actors to remember their lines! So knowing there is no way back, I walk into the theatre and take a breath. For this year's Christmas season, we bring you the magical story of Sleeping Beauty and Her Winter Knight with a stellar cast. Children: think of your fairy tales, sit back, and enjoy the story coming to life. Adults: remember your childhood memories. This is as much your show as ours, and without you, this could never happen. So I hope you have rehearsed your lines and are ready to enjoy the show of your life. Thank you, Pasadena Playhouse, for your loyalty and your love of the Lythgoe Family Productions team. She earned her M.B.A. in Entrepreneurship and Strategy at Rensselaer in Troy, New York. She has served as Director of Finance and Planning for La Jolla Playhouse, was Managing Director for Capital Repertory Theatre (a LORT regional theatre in Albany, New York), and most recently was Managing Director of Los Angeles’ own The Actor’s Gang. She and her husband, Kwinn Doran, a college professor and historian, have made themselves at home in South Pasadena with their two young sons, Giacomo and Ely, and welcomed a third child, Calypso. SEEMA SUEKO (Associate Artistic Director) joined The Pasadena Playhouse staff in January as Associate Artistic Director. For the past nine years, she served as the Executive Artistic Director of Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company, a community-focused, socially conscious Equity theatre company she cofounded in San Diego. In addition to directing at Mo`olelo, Seema developed Mo`olelo’s greening initiative and consensus organizing methodologies. She led the company to its selection as the inaugural Resident Theatre Company at La Jolla Playhouse and to awards from the American Theatre Wing, the National Endowment for the Arts, Actors’ Equity Association, and the N.A.A.C.P. San Diego Branch, among others. Other directing and acting credits include The Old Globe, Yale Repertory Theatre, 5th Avenue Theatre, Indiana Repertory Theatre, San Diego Repertory Theatre, and Native Voices at The Autry, among others. She was the recipient of the inaugural Leadership U[niversity] grant from Theatre Communications Group/The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which took her to Arena Stage in 2013 as a Visiting Artistic Associate in mentorship with Molly Smith. She holds an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago. A Panto is derived from the British institution, which is a musical show based on fairy tales. Historical fairy tales include Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin, Jack and the Beanstalk, Beauty and the Beast, Robin Hood, and Mother Goose. Panto scripts are rewritten every year and include ever-changing music sourced from Billboard charts so that each production remains current. Another contemporary Panto tradition is the inclusion of celebrity guest stars. Past Panto stars include Stephen Fry, Sir Ian McKellan, Eartha Kitt, Henry Winkler, George Takei, Joan Collins, Patrick Duffy, Priscilla Presley (pictured at right), and many more. The focal point of a Panto, though, is how it brings together the family unit by way of entertainment. Whether young or old, all members of the family can enjoy a Panto!
