CHIMES National Awardee
Steve Yulo, husband of the awardee; Roberto Tañada,
son of the late Senator Lorenzo Tañada; CHIMES
Awardee Marichu Yulo; Joey Ledesma, DLSP National
Mission Council; and Br. Raymundo Suplido FSC during
the awarding rites held on November 26, 2008 at the
DLSP Multi-Purpose Hall of the De La Salle University
Manila.
Marichu Sta. Maria Yulo was honored as
the 2008 Lorenzo M. Tañada CHIMES
Awardee. The award draws attention to school
employees who exemplify values
fundamental to the Lasallian identity: the
spirit of faith, zeal for service, and communion
in mission. It highlights Lasallians who, in
their day to day dealings, see everything
through the eyes of faith, manifest an
enthusiastic and total gift of self in the service
of the poor and the vulnerable, and have a
deep sense of communion with those serving
in the Lasallian Mission. Just as the pealing of
bells in the past beckoned a community to
pause momentarily, so shall this Award call on
the Lasallian Family to honor lives rooted in
faith, zealous in service and united in constant
solidarity with others in facing the challenges
of the Lasallian Mission.
The CHIMES Award was established to
give recognition to those who make a positive
difference in the community through their life
example as they perform their Lasallian
service and ministry. It is dedicated to Lorenzo
M. Tañada, a truly Filipino Lasallian who, by
his life works and passion, has earned a place
in history. Being a man who had a deep
devotion to his family and to public service, a
leader of integrity and morality, and a
nationalist who selflessly offered his life for
the cause of justice and peace, his example
ought to be retold so as to enrich lives through
generations.
Yulo has served as budget clerk of the
University of St. La Salle for 20 years, has been
serving as an officer of the Organization of
Non-Teaching Personnel, and is currently
pursuing a Masters degree in Business
Administration. She was a recipient of the
THOMAS Award and is also an active
member of the Brotherhood of Christian
Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP), proof
that her gift of service extends outside the
boundaries of the university.
PERAA Outstanding Members of 2008
Three faculty members of the University of St. La Salle were given top
honors by the Philippine Education Retirement Annuity Association as
recipients of The Outstanding PERAA Member (TOPM) awards for 2008. John
T. Cabalo PhD, a faculty of the Integrated School and the Visayas Area
Superintendent of the Lasallian Schools Supervision Office (LASSO) bagged the
top honors for Teaching Category - Level A, Stephanie Calamba, Accountancy
Department Chairperson, for Teaching Category Level B and Lisa Dy PhD,
Psychology Department Chairperson, for Non-Teaching Category Level A.
The University was given high recognition for the awards won by its faculty
representatives. It was the first time that USLS faculty representatives topped
all the categories they participated in. The awarding ceremony was held on
October 23, 2008 at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City. Receiving the award in
behalf of the University was Ligaya Castor, Director for Human Resource and
Development. The search for The Outstanding PERAA Member (TOPM) is
annual recognition of PERAA for its outstanding members nationwide.
PERAA is the largest non-profit multi-employer retirement plan provider
exclusive to private education in the Philippines.

ICA holds Reception Rites
for Pioneering Graduates
After 10 months of kitchen training
where they have learned the rudiments of
cooking, knife skills, stock making, baking,
wine appreciation and other aspects of the
culinary arts, the pioneering batches of the
Institute for Culinary Arts were honored in a
Reception Rites last November 24, 2008, at the
Sanctuario DeLasalle. In his inspirational
message to the graduates, Br. Ray Suplido
shared his insights based on a movie
“Babette’s Feast” where the preparation of
food is not only for the purpose of the pleasure
of eating but also as a communal act of sharing
and “agape.”
Responses from representatives of the
graduating batches gave the audience an
insight on their experiences and the challenges
they went through during the course of their
culinary studies.
The pioneering batches were handled by
two internationally trained Chefs. Chef
Richard Ynayan handles the 1:00 to 5:00 pm
class and Chef Richard Bringas for 5:30 to 9:30
pm class. The graduates will then proceed on
a two-month On-the-Job Training in different
restaurants and hotels where they can put
their kitchen training into actual use.

Project Citizen is an international program on
civic education that has been tried in more than
60 countries worldwide. It is a pedagogical
approach that seeks to impart the critical skills
our students need to influence the public
policies that affect every Filipino. It does by
training students to seek public policy
interventions to solve community problems. It
aims to connect the classroom learning of
students on democratic citizenship with
activities such as research that immerse them
in the community and expose them to the
dynamics of public policy formulation,
implementation and evaluation. It is a project
initiated by the Philippine Center for Civic
Education and Democracy (PCCED) based in
the University of Asia and Pacific (UAP) under
the auspices of the American Embassy.
Through the efforts of Mrs. Marife P.
Varela, Chair of Political and Social Sciences
Department of USLS and Prof. Virgilio
Aguilar, Political Science Research adviser,
Project Citizen was integrated in the course
program of Political Science department in
subjects such as Local Government and
Autonomy, Current Issues and Problems in
Governance and Political Science Research I
and II. Thus, the fourth year Political Science
students became the pioneering batch in
conducting the Project Citizen program in the
Visayas.

The presentation will showcase the
citizen interventions done in the selected
community Barangay 19 under Brgy. Captain
Jocylin Uychiat. The group will present on
how they have chosen the barangay, the
problems that they have found in the
barangay, their policy recommendations for
the City and for the barangay and their action
plans that will be implemented on the said
community.

sa Cauayan (KASAMA KA) marked its 10th
year founding anniversary last November 30,
2008. Since its formation, it has worked in
partnership with Balayan, the Community
Development and Volunteer Formation Office
of the University of St. La Salle.
KASAMA KA gained the recognition of
the community with its strong environmental
protection and advocacy program which
resulted to the passage of the Municipal
Fishery Ordinance of Cauayan in 2003.
Because of this, it was awarded by the World
Futures Studies Federation (WFSF) for
creating a futures-conscious community. The
programs of the federation were their concrete
response to the massive illegal fishing and
environmental degradation problem in the
municipality. Later, the programs included
poverty reduction, land-based supplemental
and alternative livelihood.
The anniversary is a celebration of their
gains and re-affirmation of their mission,
vision and principles to work for the
environment, people empowerment and selfreliance of fisherfolks, women and other
marginalized sectors of society.
Jullie Ablao, Senior Polsci student and
president of Guidance and Evaluation Center
(GEC) volunteers joined 151 delegates from
all over the Philippines in the 7th National
Youth Parliament held in the Development
Academy of the Philippines in Tagaytay City
from November 7 to 11, 2008. With the theme
“Unity Unity in Diversity: An Interfaith and
Intercultural Parliament” the National Youth
Parliament (NYP) aims to gather young
Filipino leaders to discuss the prevailing
issues affecting the youth and develop and
promote relevant policies in the course of the
5 day event.
Resource persons for the parliament
were: Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita
who gave the keynote message; Ms. Suneeta
Mukherjee, Country Representative of the
United Nations Population Fund and Atty.
Marc Castrodes who gave lectures on the
Role of the youth in Nation Building;
Councilor Ronald Barcena of the 1st District
of Antipolo City gave a talk on the Basics of
Parliamentary Rules and Procedure; and
Commissioner Richard Alvin Nalupta of the
National Youth Commission and NYC
Executive Director Apolonio Maleniza II.
USLS, St. Joseph School La Salle, DENR and
Barangay Punta Taytay Sign One Million Trees MOA
The university and St. Joseph SchoolLa Salle entered into a partnership with the
local government unit of Barangay Punta
Taytay and the City Environment and
Natural Resources Office last November 22,
2008 for the One Million Trees project in
selected sites in the said barangay.
At present there are two mangrove
reforestation sites in Barangay Punta
Taytay, Purok Seawall and Purok
Bayanihan. Barangay Punta Taytay Captain
Rufino Alcala and officials have been
actively involved in the process of planning,
implementation and monitoring of the
project.
The One Million Trees Project seeks to
provide a venue for a more proactive
response to environmental issues via tree
planting activities and reforestation
programs that promotes the propagation
and caring for indigenous species. The
project will draw out mechanisms that will
systematically involve the Lasallian Family
in sustainable reforestation and greening
efforts in close partnership and
coordination with local communities.
Furthermore, it aims to raise awareness and
form values in the Lasallian Family as well
as people belonging to the various partner
communities on the importance of natural
ecosystems such as forests through treeplanting and reforestation activities that
promotes a more practical “learning-bydoing approach in environmental
education.
The Integrated School
PAASCU Grants USLS-IS
a “Clean” Re-accreditation Status
“Hard work does pay off!” A common
expression that serves to inspire every
Lasallian administrator, teacher, staff, parent,
and student as the University of St. La Salle Integrated School (USLS-IS) has been granted
a “clean” re-accreditation status for a period of
five (5) years valid until November 2013 by the
Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools,
Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU) after the
school’s first Basic Education Accreditation
visit last September 8 and 9, 2008.
PAASCU maintains that only programs
that have been granted “clean” reaccreditation, meaning that no progress report
or interim visit is required within the five-year
accreditation period, may apply for Level III
status. This is where the Integrated School
stands.
As it awaits PAASCU’s invitation to
apply for Level III status, the school enjoys the
following privileges accorded by the
accrediting body:
(1) Full administrative deregulation,
provided that reports of promotion of students
and lists of graduates are available for review
by DepEd at all times;
(2) Financial deregulation in terms of setting
of tuition and other school fees and charges;
(3) Authority to revise the curriculum
without DepEd approval provided that DepEd
minimum requirements and guidelines, where
applicable, are complied with and the revised
curriculum is submitted to DepEd Regional
Offices;
(4) Authority to graduate students from
accredited courses or programs of study in the
levels accredited without prior approval of the
DepEd and without need for Special Orders;
(5) Priority in the awards of grants/subsidies
or funding assistance from CHED-Higher
Education Development Fund (HEDF)/DepEd
for scholarships and faculty development,
facilities improvement and other development
programs;
(6) Right to use on its publications or
advertisements the word "ACCREDITED,"
pursuant to DepEd policies and rules; and
(7) Limited visitation, inspection and/or
supervision by DepEd supervisory personnel
or representatives.
*These accreditation concerted efforts yielded
to better results because the Lasallian family
adheres to continuous improvement of
educational quality and services through selfevaluation and judgment of peers using
commonly accepted standards of quality or
excellence. Hats off for the Integrated School
family!
Rubin tops Rotary’s Voice of the
Youth Impromptu Speaking Contest
He was declared school champion of the
English Department-sponsored Impromptu
Speaking Contest. He represented the USLS to
the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports,
Cultural, and Educational Association
(NOPSSCEA) impromptu speaking contest in
its latest Literary-Musical Competitions. He
bested 20 other speakers from private and
public high schools of Negros Occidental,
Panay, and Mindanao during the recentlyconcluded Rotary Club of Bacolod Southsponsored Voice of the Youth Impromptu
Speaking Contest.
That's Jared Rubin of 9E, a sophomore,
who will represent the Integrated School and
the Rotary Club of Bacolod South to the
National Finals at the Philamlife Auditorium,
Manila, on February 6, 2009.
The national champion will receive a
trophy and a P50,000 cash prize. The runnerup will bring home a trophy and P40,000 while
the district level winners will each receive a
trophy and P15,000.
The Voice of Our Youth is an impromptu
speaking competition open to Filipino high
school students, 14 to 18 years old, from public
and private schools nationwide.
It seeks to develop the student's ability to
form their point of view on a particular topic
within a limited time and to effectively convey
their message to an audience in plain English.
The competition is held once every two
years and is jointly sponsored by all Rotary
Clubs in the Philippines, the Department of
Education, and Allied Banking Corp.

gain seat at
AFS-JENESYS
Study Tour 2008

Gonzaga, both of Grade 11E, will join the other
58 students from all over the Philippines in the
2008 AFS-JENESYS Japan Study Tour Program
from December 4-18.
Sponsored by the American Field Service
(AFS) Intercultural Programs Philippines,
theJapan-East Asia Network of Exchange for
Students and Youths (JENESYS) study tour in
Japan aims to foster solidarity among Asian
countries including the Philippines, Australia,
New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia
and India.
AFS-JENESYS provides intercultural
learning opportunities to help people develop
the knowledge, skills and understanding
needed to create a more just and peaceful
world through youth exchange among
students and teachers in Asia. Likewise, the
program provides the participants with the
chance to immerse themselves in Japanese
culture on a fully funded, two week
scholarship. The scholarships are worth $8000
each and include flights to and from Japan,
food, accommodation, medical insurance and
a study tour of Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima.
Participants will be exposed to the realities of
the Japanese political and economic systems,
and interact socially and culturally with
Japanese citizens.
AFS Philippines offers two basic
programs for junior and senior high school
students, namely the *Year Program* and the
*Short Program*. For one academic year, AFS
students live with a host family and attend a
local secondary school as full-time students.
This begins in July/ August/ September or
January/ February/ March depending on the
country.
The short program focuses on
homestays, language skills, community
service or cultural activities. Participants
mostly live with host families, participate in
educational activities and enjoy their new
communities.
Villanueva and Gonzaga will attend the
pre-departure orientation in Manila on
December 1-3 for the short-term AFS-JENESYS
program. Their participation means facing the
challenge of the organization: Today’s students
are tomorrow’s leaders.

Jochico and Quezon
on Official Visit to U.S.
Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Marie Therese Jochico, Ed.D left for the
United States on October 25, 2008 for a
funded program and travel grant from the
Philippine-American Educational
Foundation (PAEF). In the course of her
travel, she will be attending a US-based
training for Education USA Advisers.
The Philippine-American Educational
Foundation (PAEF) is a binational
organization responsible for the
administration of the Fulbright exchanges
between the Philippines and the United
States, the Hubert H. Humphrey
fellowships, and the East-West Center
s c h o l a r s h i p s . I t a l s o s e r ve s a s a
clearinghouse for information on
educational institutions and programs in
the Philippines and the United States.
Jochico is the adviser of the Education USA
Program.
On the other hand, College of Business
& Accountancy Dean Marissa Quezon, PhD
left on October 26, 2008 for an educational
exchange visit at St. Mary’s College of
California, a Lasallian liberal arts institution
in Moraga Valley, San Francisco, California.
She will also be visiting two other Lasallian
schools. Lewis University in Romeoville,
Illinois and La Salle University in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The purpose of
her travel is to explore possible partnerships
and exchange activities between the
University of St. La Salle and the Lasallian
schools she visited in the United States.
Quezon’s visit to St. Mary’s and Lewis were
part of the outcomes of the signed
agreements between USLS and these
institutions during the US trip of Br. Ray
Suplido, FSC, Rhoderick K. Samonte and
Cugie Loarca last September 2008.

Orientation Set
The Education USA Advising Center
held an orientation on October 8 at Room 10.
The orientation provided information on
the educational system of the United States,
application processes and requirements,
scholarship grants and other references and
sourced for various educational programs.
Guest lecturer was Esmeralda Cunanan,
executive director of the Philippine American
Educational Foundation (PAEF) the
organization that administers the Fulbright
Scholarship Program in the Philippines.
Cunanan also supervises a network of
advising centers in the country.
Two Lasallian faculty members,
Rhoderick Samonte who is a graduate of the
Masteral Program in Sustainable International
Development from Brandeis University in
Massachusetts; and Grace Alvarez who was a
grantee of the Foreign Language Teaching
Assistanceship
Program at Stanford
University, shared their experiences of
studying in the United States.
Arts & Culture
O’ Little Town of Bethlehem
The Museo Negrense de La Salle opened
the Christmas season with an exhibit of of
Belen and Nativity sets from the private
collections of Dr. Ricky Gallaga, Dr. Gloria
Tinio, Dr. Ann Jison, Mrs. Amai Lopue and
Mrs. Rosario Ledesma.
The exhibit features a diverse array of
nativity scenes interpreted according to the
cultural and creative influences of different
countries.
A Christmas tree in the center of the
exhibit allows visitors to hang an ornament in
exchange for a donation to the Bacolod Boys
Home and the Hating Kapatid Program.

ONE ANIMO InterLasalle
Coopetition Camp
The University saw athletes from different La Salle schools in
the country participate in a week long “Coopetition” Sports Camp
last October 26 to 30. “Coopetition” is a portmanteau (a blend of two
or more words) coined from the words Cooperation and
Competition which is the goal of the week-long camp to realize the
theme “ONE ANIMO” or One La Sallian Spirit, and build
friendship in the midst of competition.

Athletes Honored
Bro Ray Suplido, FSC, administrators, faculty, coaches and athletes
united in singing the Spirit Song.

The USLS champion athletes for 20072008 were honored in a dinner and awarding
ceremony on October 3 at the Sanctuario de
La Salle. An inspirational message was given
by Mitchel Martinez, a USLS alumna and a
multi awarded athlete from her college days
until present. She talked about her story as a
struggling athlete scholar who managed to
win medals and at the same time graduate
from college without failing grades.
Martinez is currently a police officer of the
Philippine National Police and at the same
time a Philippine Team boxer who has
represented and won medals for the country
in various sporting events worldwide.

Patindol is Two-time PBBY Grand Awardee
Jean Lee “Jeanette” Patindol, a faculty member of the
College of Business and Accountancy, has been awarded the
Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) Alfredo
Salanga Prize for her books “Papa’s House, Mama’s House
,” in 2004 and “Tight Times” in 2007.
The PBBY is a private, non-stock, non-profit
organization committed to the development of children’s
literature in the Philippines. It is the Philippine National
Section of the International Board on Books for Young
People (IBBY), a world organization founded in Zurich in
1953 that promotes international understanding through
children’s books. The PBBY is the lead agency in the
celebration of National Children’s Book Day (NCBD).
Both of Patindol’s PBBY Alfredo Salanga medals were
donated to the university and are now included in the La
Sallian Hall of Fame.

Annual Alumni Golf Tournament
The USLS Alumni Association
traditionally holds a summer golf
tournament sponsored by the year's Silver
Jubilarians. The year 2008 breaks the
tradition, in many ways. HS Batch '84
sponsored and spearheaded the
tournament held on November 15-16 at
the Negros Occidental Golf & Country
Club, Bacolod City. Aptly called the “One
La Salle Perpetual Cup Golf Tournament,”
the participating alumni teams represented batches, regardless of which La
Salle school they attended. The tournament was, therefore, open to alumni
of DLSP member schools.
The Perpetual Cup is aimed to be an annual event in which the name of
the winning team of each year's tournament is engraved and thus
immortalized onto the 3-foot high trophy.
As golfers and guests entered the Golf Club, they were welcomed by
the energetic USLS-IS Drumbeaters, setting the pace for the 2-days' games.
Day 1 of the tournament started with an opening program participated in
by the USLS community. The University Chorale led the crowd in singing
the Pambansang Awit, after which President-Chancellor Br. Ray Suplido
FSC gave his welcome remarks. The Pep Squad gave a special dance
number. The presence of USLS officers, College Deans, Department Chairs
and Directors of offices was very much appreciated.
As soon as the tournament was declared open, Br. Ray led the
ceremonial tee-offs, with the Lasallian family cheering, “Go, Br. Ray!” He
was followed by Henry Atayde of Batch '78 and Dave Sarrosa, Batch '84.
Noted among the golfers and guests were: Hon. Eric Saratan, Mayor of
Talisay City; Hon. Mark Golez, Vice Mayor of Silay City; former Governor
Bitay Lacson, HS '65; Hon. Manolet Escalante, Mayor of Manapla;
Congressman Celestino Martinez III, 4th District of Cebu; and businessman
Antonio Escalante.
In the evening, an audio-visual presentation of the day's activities was
shown. During the cocktails and fellowship, everybody was entertained by
the Artians Cheerdance Squad and U-Band members Gerhard, Hadasa and
Kim. Jamming with them was Cong. Martinez, who sang to the delight of
the crowd.

HS Class '84, led by president Dave
Sarrosa, hosted this year's forum with USLS
Manila-based alumni at Palm Grove, Rockwell
Center last October 1, 2008. “Paghili-ugyon: La
Salle Balikan Ta, Negros Ugyonan Ta”
gathered together 107 alumni from different
batches ranging from Class '57 to Class '07.
Five La Salle Brothers and the USLS Chairman
of the Board of Trustees, Oscar J. Hilado of
Col.'58 all joined in this reunion of USLS
alumni in Manila.

came and were conferred the jubilarian medals
and pins, a ceremony which they had missed
last July 4 at USLS during the 56th Foundation
Day Celebration.

Workshop
DLSP and the Lasallian Alumni Associations'
Workshop was held on November 15-16, 2008
at the PHINMA Training Center in Tagaytay
City. The central theme was “The Lasallian
Alumni Serving in Faith and Communion.”
Representatives from all the La Salle schools in
Luzon and USLS-Bacolod attended this
workshop, the objective of which was to share
with the alumni sector the strategic intents of
the District leading towards the 100th year of
La Salle in the Philippines in 2011. It also
sought to invite and inspire more alumni from
the different La Salle schools in promoting a
sense of belonging in One La Salle.

Dodo Fernandez FSC. Facilitators were Jay
Gervasio and Lito Tanjuatco, both former

This is to inform the public that the
University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City is
being misrepresented in a website with the
web address
http://www.marievelasco.cjb.net.
The said website contains: the name of an
alleged student whose identity is NOT in the
official records of the University, an image
file of a fraudulent USLS transcript of
records, diploma and certificate with the
falsified signature of the Brother President
and a wrongly identified University
Registrar. Advancement in technology has
given us application software and graphic
design programs capable of altering images
and in this case the image files of the
transcript, diploma and certificates of the
University. As much as it is impossible to
govern and censor the content and
information available through the Internet
and the World Wide Web, the University of
St. La Salle appeals to the public to be wary
of false information, hoaxes, scams and
other rackets that may involve the use of the
name of the University. Should you find
websites which contain information about
the University of St. La Salle in a dubious
manner please try to validate the
information presented or report the site to
the University of St. La Salle care of the
Center for International and External
Linkages at 435-2594. Please counter-check
with this office regarding any persons
allegedly related to the University asking for
assistance.
