modelling legend Tony Ward and blonde bombshell
Cassandra Smith, who welcomes you to the land where
it never rains – Los Angeles. Keep turning the pages
to find iconic model Irina Lazareanu adopting a poetic
approach to the Summer months, while photographer
Wendy Bevan delves into the darker side of the season
in Voodooville.

Schön! delves into the magical, mysterious photography of Wendy Bevan.
When I meet Wendy Bevan at The Groucho Club in Soho during London Fashion Week, she is dressed
with an aura and style that harks back to the days of Hollywood glamour. My immediate reaction is to ask
her about the catwalk shows she has been to and is going to, but Bevan – like her photography – deviates
from the norm and, although she has been to a few shows, explains that the circus that is LFW doesn’t hold
much appeal for her; an unexpected answer and also an indication that there is a lot more to Bevan than
meets the eye.

A few minutes with Bevan is enough to sense she is an
intriguing character, and the longer we converse, the more
you begin to realise her dreamy images are very much
an extension of herself. Her stunning work portrays
enchanting femme fatales in ways that do not play up to
generic ideas of feminine beauty. The sometimes disturbing
images encourage you to enter a surreal world enveloped in
nostalgia. However, Bevan says this nostalgic feeling was
not something that was steadfastly sought after: “It was
never meant to be too nostalgic, but I think it’s just that
naturally I love that feel of images, so my imagery that I
create – it’s not super glossy and hard and digital – it is
really other worldly. It’s capturing something that you can’t
put your finger on; it’s creating a world.”
an ambition, and a feeling, and a world that I try and create,
both with imagery and the way that I perform.”
In a realm of digital cameras and the mighty titan of
‘Photoshop’, Bevan is something of an anomaly as she
creates her images solely using Polaroid cameras, a skill
she honed early on in her career. “I did work with film
for a long time,” Bevan explains, “but I was always taking
pictures on my Polaroid.” The pivotal point in her career
occurred during her first commission, when she was asked
to shoot the entire fashion editorial with her Polaroid: “I
built up quite a collection of work on Polaroid and they saw
this work and said actually maybe try and shoot like this.”
This is apparent within Bevan’s music and personified
through the character she plays while on stage: her alter
ego (nicknamed Olga) could have stepped right out of
any one of Bevan’s Polaroids. Laughing, she explains this
persona further: “Actually the name kind of became a bit
of a joke really. It was more of an instinctive development
of character. She’s very theatrical and very dramatic and
she feels pain deeply. She’s an absolute femme fatale and yeah,
this character just really developed with the music that I
was writing and it instinctively felt really right to perform
in this way.”
Bevan soon realised this was the direction in which she
wanted to take her work. “It answers the instinctive kind
of nostalgia in my work and also I feel like there is still a
pure magic to it,” she says. “You know… literally having
something in your hands after you’ve taken a picture. It
seems kind of encapsulated in this square format and you
can watch it develop. I really love the magic of it. It amazes
me every time, it’s exciting you know? I think [with] digital
now, we sort of got rid of that excitement.”
Fast forward to 2013 and Bevan’s client list reads like a
fashion photographer’s dream. However, her talents do not
start and end behind the camera. When she is not creating
dreamy editorials Bevan fronts a band titled ‘Temper
Temper’, something she says she has always wanted to do.
“It’s always been a goal,” she explains. “I studied music and
[I’ve] performed and sung since I was a kid. I kind of have
One of the strengths of Bevan’s work is the authenticity
behind it, and it is another reason why the same themes
seem to effortlessly work their way into her many different
endeavours, something that she consciously acknowledges:
“I think with my photography I’ve spent time creating and
styling these women – sort of these femme fatale characters
– and I’m really interested in that. I love the theatre of
photography and the theatre of performance and music
and so I really saw a world within that, that I wanted to
understand and develop. I guess it’s a soundtrack to the
images and the world that I create with the photographs.”
Although Bevan’s images provide viewers with a distinct
sense of a time gone by. She is not one for intoxicating
nostalgia (“I think some people can really get caught up in
the past, I don’t really do that, I’m interested in the idea”),
and moving forward, Bevan begins the year with various
performances and exhibitions of her work. So as a nonPhotoshop card carrying member, how exactly does she
create the atmosphere seen in her photographs? “I can’t
tell you that!” she laughs. “A lot of hard work… and hocus
pocus.”
If her track record is anything to go by, Bevan definitely has
the magic touch and, whether through harmony or instant
camera, we look forward to what her next unique offering
will bring.
