Plant trees in fall to boost property value
Planting a tree is an investment in the
future, according to this Greek proverb: “A
society grows great when old men plant
trees under whose shade they never expect
to sit.”
But did you know planting trees around
your home is also an investment in your
real estate value and the value of your
neighborhood? Or that it’s best to plant
trees not in the season of new life, spring,
but in the fall, as winter approaches?
Most Americans say they would — and
in fact, they do — pay more for a home
with trees in the yard, according to a
Wakefield Research survey sponsored
by the Alliance for Community Trees, a
program of the Arbor Day Foundation.
On average, Americans pay 18 percent
more for a house with trees in the yard.
Seventy-nine percent of those polled
said they believe trees define their
neighborhood’s character. Nearly three
quarters of respondents said they would
never move to a neighborhood that didn’t
have trees.
“The presence of trees in a neighborhood
is as important to home buyers as proximity
to good schools, accessibility to shopping
and entertainment, and commutability
to work,” said Dana Karcher, program
manager for the Alliance for Community
Trees.
“But the value of trees goes far beyond
beautifying a neighborhood,” she said.
“Planting trees helps on a local and global
scale by reducing air pollution, controlling
stormwater runoff and even mitigating
climate change.”
With 61 percent of Americans saying
they would welcome more trees in their
neighborhoods, planting one in your home
environment is good for your property
value and your community. What’s more,
fall is a perfect time for planting trees and
shrubs.
The fall planting season kicked off
with NeighborWoods Month in October,
an annual celebration of trees and green
communities that supports local treeplanting organizations and their efforts to
make neighborhoods cleaner, greener and
healthier. This initiative is made possible in
part by like-minded companies, including
Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day, Double Tree by
Hilton and the Aetna Foundation.
If you’re considering planting a tree or
two this fall, here are some things to keep
in mind.
• While spring may be the best time
to plant flowers and vegetables, fall is the
optimum season for planting trees.
In the spring, trees don’t have enough
time to grow deep roots before summer
heat hits.
Fall means warm soil, wetter weather
and cooler air that promote root growth,
helping a newly planted tree get
established before the weather turns cold
and the ground freezes.
• In warm areas, such as the South,
mid-August through mid-November is the
best time to plant a tree. In cooler climates,
trees should be planted by mid-October.

means they’ll be well established when
next spring’s growing season arrives.
• Some types of trees need longer to
become established, while others need less
time.
Look for trees that don’t require a
lengthy growing period before they can
withstand harsher temperatures. Options
include ash, crabapple, hawthorn, elm,
linden, maple, sycamore, pines and
spruces.
Not sure what to plant? The Arbor Day
Foundation (www.arborday.org) offers
an online tree-selection tool to help you
understand what trees will grow best in
your region.
• Trees are prepared for planting in
three ways — bare root, containerized,
and balled and burlap.
The best methods for planting trees will
be based on how the roots look. Bareroot trees have completely exposed roots,
and you’ll need to soak the roots before
planting the tree. Bare-root trees tend to
grow faster than those in containers. Plants
from nurseries often come in containers
that need to be removed before you plant
the tree. Root balls are typically wrapped
in burlap, which must also be removed
when you plant the tree.

Not only is a smaller house less
expensive to purchase, but the ancillary
costs of the home are also reduced. You
will likely use less electricity to heat, cool
or light a smaller home. This could bring
down your utility bills. Less house also
means there’s less to maintain, meaning
costs for repairs, gardening, etc., will go

If you decrease the size of your living
space, logically, you decrease the space

force you to re-examine your “stuff” and
how much of it you actually need, helping
you to declutter. Owning fewer things also

years but has never been captured.

A Gallup Poll conducted a few years
ago found that 37 percent of Americans
believe that a home can be haunted, compared to the 36 percent who believe that
global warming is real.
Q. Is it true that the site where Bonnie
and Clyde were shot by police is haunted?
A. Some swear that it is.
The site is basically a small, barren
highway turnout near the location of the
infamous gangsters’ former hideout in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. That’s where police ended the Barrows’ bloody two-year
crime spree in 1934 by riddling the stolen
car they were driving with more than 130
steel-jacketed bullets.
The site today has only a tall, weather-worn stone marker. Visitors have reported seeing odd mists swirling around the
marker, or even lights that suddenly appear
and then vanish just as quickly. Some have
even caught these oddities on camera.
Some also claimed they’ve heard volleys of gunshots and even seen mysterious
muzzle flashes at the site at midnight when
there’s a full moon in the sky. That would
be unusual indeed, in part because the
pair were ambushed on a sunny day.
Q. Is the house that was the setting for
The Amityville Horror movie still standing?
A. Yes, the three-story Dutch Colonial
is still standing in the village of Amityville
in the southern part of New York’s Long
Island.
The Amityville House, of course, is
known as the home where 23-year-old
Ronald DeFeo Jr. went on his renowned
killing spree in 1974 after claiming he was
urged by disembodied voices to commit
the murders of his six family members.
The really strange stuff, though, supposedly happened when the next owners
moved in. They fled the property just 28
days later, after reporting startling paranormal activities that included beatings by unseen hands, walls that inexplicably oozed
with green slime, and occasional visits
from a demonlike pig that could grow as
large as the house itself.
The resulting movie about their alleged
ordeal was released in 1979 and is still
considered one of the scariest motion pictures in history.
Subsequent owners have remodeled
the property several times over the years,
so it looks little like it did when the murders and alleged hauntings occurred in the
1970s. None of those owners has reported
any major events that experts would consider paranormal in nature.

Hardwood may be one of the oldest
building materials known to man, yet
architects, designers and homeowners are
always finding fresh ways to use it in the
modern home. What’s the appeal? Flexibility
and variety, for starters.
“We’re constantly delighted to see how
traditional woods like oak and walnut are
being employed with renewed flair and
imagination,” said Linda Jovanovich of the
American Hardwood Information Center.
“Subtle tweaks can make something
familiar, look innovative. The current trend
is to take a classic hardwood application,
like paneling or flooring, and give it a
stylish, up-to-the-minute twist. Here’s a look
at what’s trending.”
WIDE-PLANK FLOORING
Perhaps no recent trend has been more
influential than the use of wide-plank
hardwood flooring. Traditional plank widths,
ranging from 2 1/4 to 3 1/2 inches, are still
popular. But today’s homeowners often ask
for widths between 5 and 7 inches, and
there is even demand for up to 10 or 12
inches.
“Wider floorboards can make a space
look larger and more modern,” said Melissa
Morgan of M Interiors in San Antonio, Texas,
who has used the generously proportioned
planks in traditional and contemporary
homes.
“With fewer seams, these floors can be
treated like a canvas — ebonized oak or
walnut for a sleek, dark look; light woods
like ash or maple for a chic, urban vibe;
weathered-gray tones for a slightly rustic
effect — the possibilities are endless,” she
said.
WOOD CEILINGS
It used to be that hardwood planks
primarily went on floors or walls, but today
they’re appearing on residential ceilings,
too.
“Simple poplar beadboard, painted white
or with a light natural stain, looks crisp and
airy overhead, adding visual interest while
remaining quiet and unassuming,” said
Rebecca Ascher of Ascher Davis Architects
in New York and Newport, Rhode Island.
“For a more assertive effect, I might
specify tongue-and-groove walnut or
hickory, characterful woods that provide a
degree of drama. For that reason, they’re
best reserved for large, high-ceilinged rooms
that are not easily overwhelmed,” she said.
“In smaller, lower spaces, a ceiling with too
much personality can feel oppressive.”

Affordable solutions abound for personalized decor
When there is a specific style you want
to achieve, a good starting point is to
investigate the materials and colors that are
synonymous with that look. For example,
traditional interiors call to mind the warm
hues of polished wood, inviting sofas and
chairs covered in classic stripes and paisley
prints, wallpapered walls and lots of family
photos on tables and shelves. A chic city
loft style would show off sleek furniture
lines, a mix of metal-meets-wood or plastic
for furniture, and white walls with a shock
of accent color such as navy blue or acid
yellow for a surprising contrast.
I was asked to redecorate an old city
kitchen. The homeowner’s preference was
for a lighthearted country style that would
suit her young family and brighten up
dreary winter days.
I immediately thought of white walls,
mellow yellow cabinets, tiles with country
character — and how about some bricks to
add texture to the walls? Since we were on
a tight budget, we weren’t about to build
a real brick wall, so I investigated options
and discovered faux-brick panels.
The corner of the kitchen beside a big
window was big enough to highlight the
design, but not so big as to make the job
too difficult.
We cut the panels to fit the space and
screwed them onto the wall; then we gave
the panels a good coat of high-adhesion
primer to seal them. To produce a rough
brick texture, we thickened white paint
with coarse wall-texturing powder, stirring
the mixture but leaving some lumps
intact. To create the impression of an old,
whitewashed brick wall, we used a heavy

mosaic tiles. The kids drew a variety of
shapes and pictures that fit the family-
friendly country-kitchen theme.
Since building a tile picture directly
onto the wall was going to be awkward,
we cut pieces of Masonite to fit. (If you try
this project, be sure to cut out any holes
for electrical sockets or light switches
before you begin tiling).
Next, we copied designs onto the
Masonite, outlined the images and filled

hardwood in a single residential space,
now mix and match them with newfound
enthusiasm.
Clearly contrasting wood tones — blond
maple and black walnut, for example —
create a striking effect that can work well in
both traditional and contemporary settings.
This is particularly true in kitchens, where
a favorite configuration features upper
them in with cut pieces of black, white
and mirrored tiles. It’s like putting together
a jigsaw puzzle. (Note: Cutting the tiles
must be done by an adult, as edges can be
sharp. Use care and wear protective eye
covering.) When placing the tiles on the
background, be sure to leave space around
each piece for the grout lines. Glue the
Masonite board in place before you apply
the grout.
There are many approaches to
decorating. If you enjoy the challenge, take
the time to investigate what materials are
available today that make a DIY project
easier.
If the raw materials are too costly, such
as precious woods, tinted glass tiles or ontrend wallcoverings, you can always find
an affordable solution. Use paint effects
to imitate the grain in wood, or check out
the selection of good-quality laminates
available today. Choose a few glorious tiles
set into a central pattern, and surround
them with basic white tiles. Most of all,
have fun — just like the children — and
display your work with pride.
