WELL: Women’s Enrichment for Longevity & Life
Because Your Financial Health is Essential to Your WELL-being
Featuring
Jean Chatzky
Friday, April 24
11-11:30 am VIP Reception
11:30-12 pm Boxed Lunch
12-1:30 pm Program
Committed to helping people in the community achieve
happier, healthier lives, the JCC launched a WELL
Symposium series (Women’s Enrichment for Longevity
and Life) to provide our community with cutting-edge
information on a variety of timely topics connected with
well-being.
We are pleased to continue the series this spring on a
topic that is forefront on everyone’s mind these days –
financial stability – when Jean Chatzky presents Because
Your Financial Health is Essential to Your Well-Being. This
currently critical and exceedingly relevant lecture will
provide attendees with valuable tips and tools for tackling today’s highly volatile financial market.
Jean Chatzky, best-selling author and motivational
speaker, has created a global platform that is helping millions of families stay abreast of today’s financially unstable economy. Jean is the financial editor for NBC’s Today
Show, a contributing editor for More Magazine, a columnist for The New York Daily News, and a contributor to
The Oprah Winfrey Show. She is the author of five books,
including her highly anticipated The Difference: Why
Some People Are Rich, Some Are Not, And How You Can
Become One of Them. Jean Chatzky also hosts a daily
show on the Oprah & Friends channel, exclusively on
XM Radio.
“We are so pleased to feature Jean Chatsky as our speaker,” says co-chair Kathy Leventhal. ”In these difficult
financial times, she is sure to provide our audience with
the information they need to make sound, healthy decisions that they can then act upon with confidence.”
“Jean Chatzky, in her highly-informed and straightforward way, makes complicated financial information
accessible and pertinent,” adds co-chair Nancy G.
Brown.

“The goal of the WELL series is to provide a forum where
women can ask questions and get answers from a variety
of experts who can empower them to make intelligent,
informed decisions,” concludes Robin Miller, JCC
President and co-chair for the symposium. “Financial
health is now a pressing global concern and we are committed and honored to have a speaker like Jean Chatzky
address our community on such a timely topic that is
impacting everyone.”

Message from the Executive Director
This issue of In the Center is the
first designed to cover two months;
March and April. In these difficult
economic times, we find a
bi-monthly publication to be a
more prudent use of our resources.
It will, we hope, reduce not only
our spending, but our environmental footprint as well. We are aggressively pursuing moving towards
electronic communication and encourage you to visit our website at www.jccotp.org.
This isue also presents us with the unusual opportunity to
talk about two of the most popular holidays, Purim and
Passover – at the same time; the former in March, the latter in
April. They celebrate different events in our history, but among
the common themes they share is community. For on these
occasions we come together – as a community, to celebrate
both the holidays and our sense of belonging.
And if our Jewish tradition is to be our guide, we’ll also
come together to help those of our fellow Jews who would
otherwise lack the means to truly enjoy these holidays on their
own. We’ll do it through donations of tzedakah, by sending out
Purim gift baskets (Shalach Mah’not) or by providing and sponsoring Passover Seders.
It is this feeling of caring and concern that ultimately
unites and defines us as a Jewish People. And we, at the JCC,
take great pride in the privilege we have – to promote and
partake of on-going efforts that speak to the welfare of our
Jewish community.

Kaplen JCC ON THE PALISADES 3
Towards that goal, we have always tried to create the sort
of surroundings that allow people to feel comfortable, and to
lift their spirits – something we sorely need these days. That’s
why we spend so much time developing and coordinating
events and programs that bring us together as a community.
Come by any day, evening or weekend, and you’ll see families,
children, teens, young adults, seniors enjoying, films, music,
basketball, swimming, lectures and a multitude of other activities. Our building is humming with an energy and buzz of participation and involvement.. And one of the by-products of that
special energy that emerges from these communal gatherings is
the feeling of connectedness with our community, both in the
local and global sense.
Such energy reinforces our mission – to not only serve the
community, but also to build Jewish community, to encourage
individuals into our community; to teach about and to nurture
a sense of community that will empower our Jewish future.
As we wish you a Chag Purim Sah’mey’ach and a
Chag Pesach Kah’shayr V’Sah’mey’ach, we ask and
urge you to join us in our mission.
B’vracha,
Avi A. Lewinson
Executive Director
Renovation Update…
Construction team laying foundation for new café.
As everyone can see, the first phase of our JCC renovation is nearly complete, with
dramatic changes happening every day. This month, the Klatskin courtyard will be
completed, with new pavers in place, new landscaping, the re-installation of the garden
statue and the enclosure of the new space with a temporary fence. The new structure
in the courtyard, which will ultimately be the new café, will be fitted with temporary
rooms to be used for Neil Klatskin Day Camp and children attending the Leonard and
Syril Rubin Nursery School.
Behind-the-scenes site work is also progressing. The new detention basin,
switchgear room and electrical room will all be completed by month-end and construction will now begin on a new Tumble Room, as well as a new Security Room.
And, we are pleased to report that we are air-conditioning the Taub Gymnasium.
These projects should take us to the end of March – and the end of the first phase
of our renovation.
Phase 2 will begin in April. On or around April 1, construction will start on most of the Health and Recreation spaces, requiring
us to close the Seiden Health Center, as well as the racquetball courts and the Sadinoff Fitness Center.
To provide seamless fitness services during this intensive six-month construction (approximately April through September), the
following changes will be made:
• All fitness services will be held in a temporary fitness center in the newly air-conditioned Taub Gymnasium and the
exercise room located by the courtesy desk.
• The downstairs locker rooms and family changing spaces will be used by all members during this period.
• The upstairs locker rooms will be used by all members during October, November and December.
• The Ben Bergen Youth Fitness Center will house our post-rehab training programs at designated times.
• Babysitting will be relocated to the new Tumble Room.
To create the foundation and the steel framework for the new Health and Recreation entrance, the HRC/Café entrance and circle
will close in early April. From April through to the end of school, the Early Childhood carpool will take place in front of the playground for both drop-off and dismissal. Details of these procedures will be sent directly to all nursery school families. The drop
off for our adult day program will be moved to the front circle. Traffic flow in the camp building parking lot will be impacted, so
we request that people drive patiently and carefully. None of the nursery classrooms will be impacted during the school year.
Center closes at 4 pm through March 6
Center closes at 6 pm March 13-April 24
Center closes at 7 pm May 1-August 14
The real excitement is just beginning…and keeps building every day. To stay up-to-date on every phase and stage of development,
please refer to signage that is displayed throughout the building and check our website, www.jccotp.org, where you can learn all
the important details about upcoming renovations. In addition, we will continue posting regular Renovation Updates here on page
3 of In the Center. If you have any questions about the renovation please do not hesitate to email us at renovation@jccotp.org.
Stay tuned for more exciting news!

book? There are stories about stories from an oral
tradition – both ancient and contemporary – that
delve deep into our Scripture and shed new light
on our ancient tales. Join Storahtelling for One

ARC: Where Socializing is Good Medicine
Singles Schmooze with Jeff and Bruce
Fran and Herb Honig will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this coming
June. When they met, it was love at first sight, so they married, started a family, and
actively pursued their professional interests. Fran performed and taught piano and
Herb was an audio engineer, technical writer and authored books on Apple computers.
A couple of years ago, Herb started to become forgetful and lost interest in activities.
He was evaluated by a doctor, who diagnosed him with mild cognitive impairment and
recommended that he attend a day care program to promote socialization and help
him resume meaningful activity. At first Fran was hesitant to pursue a program of this
kind, since Herb was never a social person. But with encouragement from friends and
family she reached out to the Kaplen Adult Reach Center (ARC). Fran now claims it
was one of the best decisions for both of them. “I was pleasantly surprised that Herb
welcomed being a part of an active social atmosphere,” Fran says. “From day one he
seemed happier and more outgoing. Socializing is good medicine.”
Knowing that her husband is safe and active in a loving environment, Fran has peace of mind to pursue
her interests, run errands, visit with friends, and continue teaching piano. “I am very grateful to ARC because
Herb and I both benefit.”
ARC meets four days a week from 9 am-2 pm and offers a complete program of recreation, therapeutic
and social activities, including a nutritious kosher breakfast and lunch. It welcomes all members of the
community, offers scholarships and is a Medicaid provider. Caregiver support groups are available bimonthly.

Duality by Zach Horn

Meet the Artist Reception: Sunday, 3/1, 1–3 pm
I am intrigued by places that are both beautiful and
dangerous. I translate my awe and fear into an abstract
language of pure color, shape and composition that only
hints at recognizable images. Natural colors refer to hidden
environments and imply narrative within the abstraction. To parallel the dualism
of these landscapes, I use two painting styles: hard-edge motif and expressionist
brushstrokes. The interaction between the techniques mirrors the two sides of my
experiences.

“America’s Cake Maestro”
This not-to-be-missed culinary adventure
begins with a light breakfast, featuring special guest speaker, Ron Ben-Israel, at the
home of Jan and Edward Turen. Participants
then choose from an appetizing selection of
lunches, served in private homes, where
hosts and hostesses provide a unique and
memorable dining experience.
When former dancer Ron Ben-Israel
fell in love with a chocolate maker while on
tour in Canada, he traded in his ballet slippers for a whisk and a spatula. And fortunately, the discipline he acquired during years of rigorous
performance schedules helped him as he pursued his new vocation.
Like many aspiring chefs, he traveled to France and apprenticed in
Cannes, Beaujolais, and Lyons. Ultimately, New York provided Ron with
the most exhilarating and challenging “stage” for his artistic vision. In
less than a decade, his culinary artistry has become legendary and he
has truly become America’s cake maestro.

Community Supported Agriculture at the JCC

Hazon Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) program
JCC is proud to launch a Community Supported Agriculture program
(CSA), Tuv Ha’aretz. Tuv Ha’aretz members buy shares in a local farm, help pay
for seeds, fertilizer, water, equipment, maintenance and labor. In return, the farm
provides its members with seasonal, locally grown, fresh organic produce (to
the best of its ability) throughout the growing season. Participants will gain the
satisfaction of knowing that they are helping to support local agriculture,
assisting farmers and building a community committed to eating food that is not
only fit for us, but fit for the Earth as well.
The beauty of this Jewishly-rooted program is that it represents a committed
partnership between a farm and a community of supporters that provides a
direct link between the production and consumption of food. This, in turn,
encourages a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat,
the land on which it is grown and those who grow it. The end result creates
economically stable farm operations, where members can be assured of high
quality produce at below retail prices.

P
enny Harvest Comes to the JCC and
raises $1,300 for Charity in Just Six Week
Penny Harvest – a “common cents” initiative that grew from one child’s desire to feed the homeless – has come to the Kaplen
JCC on the Palisades, the first New Jersey agency to embrace the project in Bergen County. The Penny Harvest mission is to
collect unused pennies gathering in jars and pockets all across America, and after a successful grass roots effort in New York, it
has begun to take the country by storm.
Leading the NJ effort, the Children’s Department at the JCC encouraged first to fifth grade students who attend the JCC
after school program, Finish the Day at the J, and other children in our community to join together to make a difference in the
lives of others.
And that is just what they did. The JCC maintenance department hand-built a giant container, shaped like a Menorah in
honor of Chanukah, and the children placed it in the JCC lobby so that members and visitors could deposit their “loose
change” in the bin. The children then gathered in the JCC board room on select Mondays from mid-November to January,
where they “harvested” their pennies and learned about teamwork, community and moral character. They even created a
Skylar Oliver and Noa Slotky
“wheel of caring” to identify the various causes they hoped to support. And then, just six short weeks later, the group went on
a field trip to the Valley National Bank in Tenafly to count what they collected. Each child got to drop bags of coins into the
bank’s change-counting machine, and watched attentively as the dollar amount on the counter rose higher and higher. To
everyone’s surprise and delight, when the last bag was counted, they had raised more than $1,300!
“A key mission for the JCC is to teach everyone the importance of giving back, and Penny Harvest takes this concept to a new level, as it teaches young children that they
can really make a difference,” says Michal Kleiman, director for the JCC Finish the Day at the J program. “They learn that every penny – and every dollar – they collect is
theirs to give away. It also teaches them about leadership and responsibility and empowers them with the knowledge that individuals – and kids in particular – can help
change the world.”
With the money they raised, the group collectively decided to donate $800 to the UJA NNJ Crisis Fund to help people in our local community recover from the current
economic crisis, and gifted the remaining $500 to Make A Wish Foundation.
“We are incredibly proud of these young leaders, who were so dedicated to helping their community,” says
Judi Nahary, JCC Youth Services Director. “For many of these kids, this program was their first philanthropic
experience and we hope to encourage all of them to stay active and involved in charitable projects, knowing that
they can always make a difference.”
The Penny Harvest receptacle remains in the JCC lobby and we encourage everyone to support the project by
continuing to make donations. All coins and bills will be accepted (not just pennies!) and the children will continue to use the collections to support other local charities. For more information on the JCC involvement in
Penny Harvest and how you and your children can help, please contact Judi Nahary at 201.569.7900 ext. 369 or
email jnahary@jccotp.org.

School Children Plant Garden
with Frail Senior Adults
Children from the Leonard and Syril Rubin Nursery School join seniors from
the Kaplen Adult Reach Center (ARC) – the JCC adult day care for seniors
with Alzheimer’s and related forms of dementia – to share ongoing
intergenerational experiences. Pictured here are Regina Sallevelt (left) and
Isabel Cracchiolo (right) participating in a recent horticulture project, where
the children and seniors planted paper-white narcissus bulbs together. The
flowers will bloom this spring in the beautiful senior adult garden that
overlooks the children’s playground.
“It is now known that individuals challenged with Alzheimer’s or related forms of dementia benefit from
social interaction,” says Vivian Green Korner, Director, Kaplen Adult Reach Center. “Programs that foster
interaction, a sense of belonging and purpose can lessen the impact of cognitive impairment and for this
reason, ARC provides a full day of stimulating activities, including interaction with children, that are
designed to keep our participants engaged.”
Since its inception more than 20 years ago, ARC has helped hundreds of individuals afflicted with
Alzheimer’s disease while providing needed respite, support and guidance for their family caregivers. ARC
meets four days a week, 9am-2pm, providing participants with a wide range of upbeat activities that
encourage socialization and active participation. The day starts with a nutritious breakfast followed by a
schedule of activities including: a daily exercise program, music, reminiscing, intergenerational programs,
music, current events, pet therapy, horticulture and outings. Holiday celebrations, cultural events, parties
and more take place in a bright, spacious room with an adjoining patio and garden overlooking a cheerful
children’s playground. Door to door transportation in handicapped accessible vehicles is available, as well as
financial assistance for those in need. The program as well as services for caregivers, is offered by highly
trained compassionate staff, supported by a corps of volunteers. For information contact Vivian at ext. 461.
Berkeley “4 My Heart”
Celebrates First Anniversary
Last year, the JCC joined forces with Berkeley Heart Labs
and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (EHMC) to
offer our community a unique and innovative program

successfully growing, with the JCC Seiden Health Center
partnering with Berkeley and EHMC to offer participants
and members practical lifestyle management skills fitness
and wellness classes, behavior modification, post clinical
rehab programs and informative lectures and
workshops, Berkeley Heart Labs recently held their
official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first anniversary
of the grand opening of the Englewood-based center,

THE ABE OSTER HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE AWARD
Music Contest for High School Students
The Abe Oster Holocaust Remembrance Award was established in 2004 to honor the memory of
Abe Oster. During his lifetime, Abe worked selflessly, together with his wife Ann, to encourage
young people to study the Holocaust and to develop an understanding of its implications. The
Kaplen Jewish Community Center on the Palisades would like to perpetuate Abe’s memory by
insuring that this goal continues to be fostered. It is our hope, that every year, we will identify a
meaningful project to be engaged in by the youth of our community that will increase their knowledge of this horrific historical reality. We hope to elicit a personal response to the Holocaust, by
high school students, that demonstrates a historical and moral understanding of the Shoah.
This award also serves as a living memorial to the six million innocent Jewish victims of the
Holocaust. Among these were one and a half million children, including Abe Oster's brother Avrum
and sister, Yocheved, both toddlers, murdered simply because they were Jews. Gan Hazikaron, The
Avrum and Yocheved Holocaust Memorial Garden at the Kaplen Jewish Community Center on the
Palisades - an area for contemplation, reflection and inspiration - was lovingly dedicated in their
memories by Ann and Abe Oster.
Project for 2009:
Create an original musical composition with lyrics whose language is appropriate for all listening audiences. The piece may
be melodic and/or rap, and must not be longer than 4 minutes. The song should convey the lessons you have learned from
your comprehensive study of the Holocaust and how those lessons may be applied to present communal or global issues.
Contest Rules:
The contest is open to all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students either residing in Bergen County or enrolled in a Bergen
County public or private high school. Entries from students of all backgrounds are encouraged.
Applicants must list on the application form their name, address, telephone number, birth date, school name & address, grade
in school, and indicate whether they are available to attend the Yom Hashoah Commemoration on Tuesday, April 21 at 7 pm
at the JCC. They must state that they meet the eligibility requirements and the student as well as his or her parent or legal
guardian must sign this statement. This application form must be submitted together with (a) two CD copies of the song, and
(b) two typewritten copies of the lyrics.
An applicant must submit two copies (each in its own jewel case or protective sleeve) of one (1) original musical composition
with lyrics, whose maximum playing time shall be 4 minutes. The submission may not display any identifying information
(name, address, age, school, etc.) about the applicant. The two CD copies shall be marked/printed only with the title of the
musical composition, and be submitted in separate jewel cases or protective sleeves.
The student must affirm on the application form that his/her submission is a piece of original music created solely for the
purpose of submitting an entry to the 2009 Oster Contest.
All submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges. The JCC has the right to play the student’s submission at the
community’s Yom Hashoah Commemoration on April 21, 2009. The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades assumes no responsibility
for submissions that fail to meet the contest rules, and will not be liable for any damage to the CDs or jewel cases.

ENDOWMENTS: A LOVING LEGACY
How to Establish an Endowment Fund
Over the years, endowment funds have enabled the JCC to enhance our programs
and services and respond to challenges within our community. We thank you for
making a commitment to our agency and our future.
For a charitable, tax-deductible donation of $10,000
or more, you can establish a personal endowment
fund at the JCC. We are continually evolving to meet
the needs of our community and we pride ourselves
on our ability to offer programs and services that
enrich our members’ lives. The additional revenue
generated by personal endowment funds, makes it
possible to offer the new and dynamic programs.
Please, consider establishing a personal endowment
and help us address important needs in our
community.
Types of Endowments
The wonderful thing about endowment funds is that they allow you to give in
personal and creative ways. They can be named to:
• Honor the memory of a loved one
• Recognize a family member or friend on a special occasion
• Meet the goals of a family foundation

• They can be earmarked for an existing JCC service or program, allowing you to
support a cause or interest that is important to you.
• They can be named for a loved one, allowing you to honor or remember
someone meaningful in your life.
• They are gifts that “keep on giving.” Only a small amount of your fund’s value is
expended each year, so the fund lives on — helping people in need and
perpetuating the memory of the person you are honoring.
• Can be tailored in many ways to meet your philanthropic needs.
Tribute Cards
Donations can be made to individual endowment funds in honor of a special
occasion such as a wedding or anniversary, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the birth of a child,
or in memory of loved ones. The JCC sends notification cards to recipients and
publishes the tributes in our monthly newspaper, In The Center. The minimum

WE NEED YOU!
Host a Shaliach from Israel for Summer 2009
Each summer the JCC Day Camp hosts shlichim from Israel as part of the camp staff. These young adults
join the camp, the staff, and the community for nine weeks. The JCC is privileged to have such a high
caliber of Israeli leadership in the camp each summer. The JCC is looking for families who are interested
in hosting Israeli staff members (usually around 20-22 years old) for 2-4 weeks this summer. The camp
provides daily transportation and lunch. The families are asked to provide a private room, breakfast and
dinner and to welcome them as part of their families for the duration of their stay.
For more information please contact Erica Kose 201.569.7900 ext. 317.

Carved In Sand: When Attention Fails
and Memory Fades In Midlife
With Cathryn Jakobson Ramin
Wednesday,
March 18 @
8 pm
Brad Hirschfield is
president of CLAL –
The National Jewish
Center for Learning
and Leadership
and a popular
commentator on
religion and society.
Cathryn Jakobson
Ramin has been
a veteran reporter
for more than
30 years.
How can we create a world with less violence and division? Can we make room for other
cultures and beliefs without negating our own? Is there a way to balance commitment and
openness without sacrificing one to the other? Brad Hirschfield reveals how to be
passionately committed to one’s faith community while remaining open to other religious
traditions. Nurturing our ability to make deep commitments while remaining open to new
ideas and experiences, Hirschfield reminds us that conflict is an inevitable part of life, a
function of being connected to one another, and he shows us how it is also an opportunity
to grow closer.
Anyone older than forty knows that forgetfulness can be unnerving, frustrating, and
sometimes terrifying. Veteran journalist Cathryn Jakobson Ramin embarked on a
three-year quest for a more agile brain, interviewing top experts in the field and, with
their supervision, undergoing ten “interventions” intended to restore – and perhaps
enhance – her cognitive function. Carved in Sand addresses readers’ legitimate concerns
about the future, explaining that genetics play only a small part in determining who will
develop Alzheimer’s and that there are things you can do right now to help preserve
memory.
