The exterior of the car was shaped during more than 100 hours of wind-tunnel testing and on-track validation to improve aerodynamics. It features a lower grille opening than the Camaro SS for greater airflow, and also a different hood with carbon fibre inserts and heat extractor. The inside features front Recaro seats and a sueded flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob. Under the hood of the ZL1 is a supercharged LT4 6.4-litre V8 engine that pushes out an incredible 640 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. The engine will be paired to a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an all-new Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission that will allow the ZL1 to be the first volume production car to offer a 10-speed transmission. In a recent story by Autoblog, they state that Chevy has claimed that this new transmission shifts faster than the king of all automatic transmissions, the Porsche PDK dual-clutch transmission. The new 10-speed has six clutches, which allows it to behave a lot like a dual-clutch transmission and provide lightning-quick shifts. CARS PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016 Porsche Unveils the new 2017 718 Cayman Following on the heels of the announcement regarding the new Porsche 718 Boxster, the German automaker has announced the all-new 2017 Cayman which further enhances Porsche’s mid-engine model line-up. The new model marks the third generation of the sports coupe and this time features a more striking and athletic appearance than its predecessors. The new Cayman will be powered by the new flat-four turbocharged engines found in the new Boxster. The Cayman S model uses a 2.5litre powerplant that pushes out 350 horsepower, while the base Cayman model features a 2.0-litre flat-four turbocharged engine that produces 300 horsepower. The new engines both produce an abundance of torque at low RPMs, with the 2.0 engine producing 280 lb-ft at 1,950 to 4,500 rpm, while the 2.5 in the Cayman S features a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and allows it to deliver 309 lb-ft of torque between 1,900 rpm and 4,500 rpm. In addition to the increased power, the 718 Caymans feature firmer springs and sway bars, plus retuned shock absorbers to improve lateral grip, and will provide an overall better drive feel. I will be the first to admit that these big binders hold up to constant abuse, are resistant to fade, and produced stopping power forceful enough to loosen your fillings. Visually, there is no mistaking that the car shares many of its styling cues with lesser Ford Mustang models, but upon closer inspection you will notice that the Shelby is lower, wider, and much more aggressive looking. It almost looks like it is ready to pounce, as it sits back on its wide fenders which quickly draw the eye to a full complement of aerodynamic aids that were carefully integrated into the design after much work was done in the wind tunnel. The GT350 R benefits from a number of equipment upgrades to allow it to earn the title of the ultimate-handling Mustang ever. This super muscle car employs the same powertrain as the GT350, but the chassis has been further tuned to make optimal use of the special carbon-fibre wheels wrapped in more aggressive Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The GT350 R also benefits from the addition of a downforcegenerating, trunk-mounted rear wing and a larger front splitter. With final paving scheduled for mid-summer, and the first cars expected to do laps this September, Seibert and his crew are working flat-out. “We are certainly on schedule, maybe even a bit ahead,” he says. “The ground conditions and the weather have been very favourable. It rained a lot in February and March, which we needed because the ground was so dry. We needed the moisture in the ground for compaction.” It’s warm and dry now, ideal weather to build a track in. The first layer of gravel had been laid down over the entire distance, so The concept that this is a track for members who are not experienced is the actual contours of the track were very visible, including the cambers of front of mind for Seibert. “It’s keeping the whole idea of it seeming like you’re driving down a country road in a lot of areas, to make sure we don’t just go down the path of building a ‘race track.’ The great majority of people driving on here for the first time will never have been on a track before.” With that in mind, the pit entry and exit lanes were re-designed for safety, resulting in a pit lane with a unique “paper clip” design, perpendicular to the track surface at that point. All the concrete has been poured in the pits, along with the first couple of kilometres (out of ten-plus) of walls out on course, the latter with a new process Seibert came up with that saves literally weeks of time per kilometre, and therefore, expense in labour. Drossos is at the track every day working with Seibert, and admits he is working so much it is hard to be excited. But he is happy with the progress. “It’s certainly exceeding my expectations. The track is turning out a lot better than I ever imagined. And I thought it was going to be the corners and the various changes of elevation. A walk of the complete outstanding to begin with. Villeneuve, being a resident of Europe, has not been onsite more than a few times, but he was obviously pleased at how his design is taking shape. “This is great,” he says. “It’s one thing to see a corn field and make drawings, but to see the track take shape physically, to see it represent what you had in your mind, is amazing.” JUNE/JULY 2016 CARS Plus MAGAZINE 19 ROAD TEST: HONDA CIVIC COUPE by Benjamin Yong Price(MSRP): ...................................................... $19,455 Type: ....................................... 2-door, 5-passenger coupe Layout: ............................................... The two-door was sprayed in a bright lime green, and many people didn’t expect the finished product to closely resemble the teaser vehicle. As it turns out, it does. An interesting factoid: the process actually starts from the hip point, or seating position. If it’s too high, the driver can feel as though they’re behind the wheel of a bus. “We lowered the floor of the car and repositioned the engine,” he says, adding both the overall ride height and rear overhang are closer to the ground by one inch and 5.5 inches, respectively. In addition, the wheels have been pulled out, A-pillar moved closer to the centre resulting in a longer hood, and rear fenders stretched wider. Honda debuted the official production coupe earlier this month in Vancouver, looking mighty similar to the concept, and even offers “Energy Green” as one of the colours. Bridgestone/Firestone has announced a series of products for 2016 aimed at precisely the above segments, and recently provided an opportunity to showcase their ability at Texas Motor Speedway. Before hitting the track, Darlene Gray, consumer tire education specialist, introduced one of the new offerings that would be tested on the day: the Firestone Champion Fuel Fighter all-seasons, which combines the attributes of the Affinity and Precision models. vehicles outfitted with its own brand of tires and the competitor’s — to allow people to get behind the wheel and see for themselves. The Touring model is mid-range in the normally-aspirated line-up. This model is certainly the volume leader in the Forester line-up, so it was good to drive one that wasn’t completely loaded. The supple, long-travel suspension plays a big part in that feeling, too. The ride is quiet and smooth. The ‘no flash’ comment certainly applies to the design, which is quite conservative inside and out, but not unattractive. Our black Touring tester was about as invisible on the road as such a vehicle can be – which is not necessarily a bad thing. Inside, first impressions are favourable. To start with, the seats were an attractive cloth, and they were both ten-way adjustable and heated, two features considered essential by many drivers that aren’t always both available in a mid-level trim and a cloth seat. Comfort and support were very good for this taller driver, although the lower cushion could have been a bit longer. Under the hood is a 2.5-litre four with 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, the latter at a fairly high 4,100 rpm. On the face of it, that doesn’t seem like a lot of power for such a big vehicle. LEXUS RC F Segment Competitors: BMW M4, Audi RS 5, Cadillac ATS-V, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, MercedesAMG C63 Coupe The Skinny: The Lexus RC F launched in 2015 and was Lexus’ answer to some of the very successful German options for this type of car. It boasts a naturally-aspirated V8 engine under the hood, and definitely attracts attention with its aggressive, bold styling and a super addicting exhaust note. Pros: Boasts a very distinguishing look that helps it stand out from a crowd. Cons: The touchpad control for the infotainment system isn’t the easiest to use. Pros: The ride was smooth and the interior was very spacious. Cons: The Auto Park feature took longer than expected. HONDA FIT Segment Competitors: Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa Note, Mitsubishi Mirage The Skinny: The Fit is Honda’s entry into the subcompact hatchback segment and it does just about everything you’d expect of a car in its class. It provides amazing fuel economy, just enough room for passengers and cargo, and is easy to manoeuvre thanks to its diminutive size. Props to Honda for utilizing the space under the rear seats for storage, something other manufacturers should think about following. Pros: Gives you incredible sight lines thanks to a large windshield and small A-pillars. Cons: The front passenger seat doesn’t go nearly far enough back. JUNE/JULY 2016 CARS Plus MAGAZINE 25 FIRST DRIVE: FORD ESCAPE Faring Well Story and photos by Russell Purcell he Ford Motor Company has been a dominate force in the Canadian T utility vehicle market for years, and its smallest offering, the compact Escape, has been a showroom favourite since its introduction back in 2001. In fact, the stylish looking runabout is Ford’s second strongest product in the line-up when it comes to sales (only surpassed on the sales floor by the Ford F-150) having sold over 47,000 units in 2015. For model year 2017, the Ford Escape features revised styling to bring it more in line with that of its larger brethren – notably the Edge - and the aerodynamic efficiency of its new skin is such that it cuts through the air with less turbulence, leading to improved fuel economy and reducing the amount of wind noise entering the passenger cabin. In an effort to further enhance passenger comfort, Ford’s design team has employed the use of acoustic glass, as well as improved the quality of both the window seals and insulation. The product planning team at Ford have high hopes for the top-tier Titanium model that is loaded with luxurious features and the latest in technology, but they have also added a Sport Appearance package to the menu for 2017 which dresses the Escape up in a selection of black trim pieces - including the grille, fender surrounds, fog lamp bezels, mirror caps, side rails, and front and rear lamp unit trim - as well as stylish 19-inch alloy wheels. The Sport Appearance package should appeal to a younger consumer, and is available as an option on the Escape SE and Titanium models. On the inside, there have been several significant changes over that of the 2016 model. The parking brake handle has been replaced with an electronic unit to help tidy up the centre console to allow for more storage, enlarged cup holders, a more substantial armrest, and a USB outlet. The design of the dash itself looks similar to that of the outgoing model, although access to the controls has been improved and the large, centrally-mounted display screen becomes more prominent. The steering The look is modern, but familiar, as it is still based largely on the third wheel and its onboard complement of controls have also been revamped generation variant. This means that the Escape should be able to attract to allow for more intuitive operation. new customers as well as retain its current fan base. The most significant design changes can be seen up front, where a bold new grille treatment Tech savvy consumers will rejoice as the new Escape now features the latest variant of Ford’s innovative infotainment system, SYNC 3. The and slender HID headlamps help freshen up the Escape’s face. touchscreen design is quick to respond to inputs from your finger, and operation is largely intuitive, especially for those individuals familiar with using a tablet or iPad. The menu and controls have been simplified, and SYNC 3 also comes standard with SIRI and Apple CarPlay integration, as well as Android Auto for users in that camp. The 2017 Escape also offers SYNC Connect technology as an available option on Escape SE and as standard equipment on the Titanium model. SYNC Connect gives FordPass members remote access to their vehicle from their personal mobile device. Users can use this clever platform to lock, unlock and locate their Escape, as well as schedule remote starts and check fuel level. There are three trim levels to choose from - S, SE, and Titanium. The entry level S model carries an MSRP of $25,099, while the mid-range SE warrants $27,599, and the top-tier Titanium is $33,799. The S model is only available in front-wheel-drive form, whereas SE and Titanium models are available in either front-wheel- or all-wheel-drive form, and given Canada’s notoriously poor roads and variable weather conditions, I suspect that most buyers will elect to pony up the extra $2,200 for the latter. 26 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016 Motivation for all Escapes is derived from a trio of inline four-cylinder engines. The base S model comes fitted with the proven 2.5-litre Duratec naturally aspirated engine, while the mid-level SE comes with the turbocharged, 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine (179 hp /186 lb-ft) which it shares with the popular Fusion sedan. For those buyers looking for a more satisfying driving experience, Ford offers a 2.0-litre, twin-scroll turbocharged EcoBoost engine (which is available in SE and Titanium models) that is based on a similar unit used in the company’s Edge program. Both EcoBoost offerings feature Auto Start / Stop technology in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. During our time at the wheel, we managed to sample two Escapes, one fitted with the 1.5–litre and the other a Titanium trim unit powered by the 2.0-litre. Both engines offer plenty of scoot for these compact machines, and power is more than sufficient to hustle the Escape to triple digit highway speeds (and beyond) with very little effort. I was really impressed with the wide power band on the larger unit, which produces an impressive 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque - the highest output of any four-cylinder in its segment. The six-speed automatic transmission is a smooth operator, and transitions from gear to gear were quick and effortless, especially when I chose to select my own shift points using the steering wheel paddles (standard on models equipped with either of the EcoBoost engines). Our test loop was comprised of a series of high elevation highways where we came across steep climbs, long descents, and a full range of mountain weather – rain, sleet, snow and ice. The Escape never felt laboured, or sluggish, and both the gearbox and brakes held up well to the difficult conditions. After coming across a number of abandoned vehicles that had been caught out by the slippery conditions brought on by an unexpected snowfall, I was appreciative of the fact that our test vehicles were both all-wheel-drive models. Compact CUV and SUV offerings have become so popular in the last decade that the manufacturers have elected to outfit them with all sorts of upmarket accessories and comfort features. The product planning team at Ford Canada says that based on model history, the SE trim level will represent the bulk of Escape sales in our market, and in fact, may account for as much as 70-percent of sales for the coming model year. Appeal for the SE has been strengthened by its long list of unexpected standard features, which includes a backup camera, remote keyless entry, and a plethora of niceties that you will appreciate during our colder months - heated front seats, heated side mirrors, an engine block heater, and a windshield wiper de-icer. The Titanium upgrade brings along leather trimmed seats, LED headlights, a hands-free lift-gate, and tech goodies like a 10-speaker Sony audio system and SYNC Connect. Luxury items on the menu include helpful driver aides such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Advanced Collision Warning, Enhanced Active Park Assist, Lane-Keep Assist, Hill-Start Assist, Blind Spot Alert and automatic high beams. Other popular options include an enormous twin panel glass moon roof, voice activated navigation, and a heated steering wheel. With the thorough redesign, the Escape emerges as a more complete and more refined package. Its ergonomics and utility are class-leading, as is its dynamic handling. Add to this improved fuel efficiency and a competitive pricing structure and it is easy to see how the Ford Escape has fared so well in the marketplace. I didn’t feel as though I was just sitting in a fancy sedan that happens to go fast, but rather a performance-oriented vehicle with some nice 3-D wood trim, blue stitching and loads of legroom. Lexus compares the interior to “the cockpit of a modern fighter jet,” and that’s as good a description as any. Since the 2013 launch of one of the sleekest sports car to come out of the UK, the F-Type quickly became the modern face of the company, and has been steadily rolling out new variants featuring an alternate form factor (coupe, in 2014) and/or transmissions (manual, available in rear-wheel drive V6 models). Now, for the first time, the grade-topping, 550-horsepower R trim receives standard AWD. power adjustable seating with R logos set into the head restraints. On both door panels are knobs that can inflate the side bolsters to varying degrees of support. For convertibles, the soft top is raised and lowered using a pull switch on the centre console. Operation is smooth, quick and quiet, as one would expect from a Jaguar. What isn’t quiet, however, is the engine, and that’s a wonderful thing. A strong case could be made for buyers to choose a droptop over a coupe for this very reason — the F-Type howls like a startled jungle cat whenever the gas pedal is pressed, and without a roof overhead the sound seemingly comes from every direction. But first, a little on its appearance. Journalists, enthusiasts and even casual onlookers alike have commented time and time again on simply how beautiful the vehicle is. When it was first released, Ian Callum, director of design at Jaguar, likened the styling to a narrative, saying, “A piece of design should tell a story and this is why every line in the F-Type has a start, a direction and a conclusion.” The above effect is magnified ten-fold when the dynamic exhaust is activated, done so by pressing a button below the shift knob illustrated via a miniature set of muffler tips. A set of bypass valves in the exhaust piping open up, creating an increasing cacophony of pops, growls and backfiring sounds as the tachometer needle rises. Pure bliss. The story is conveyed through a pair of what Jaguar calls “heartlines,” creases formed in the bodywork that give the F-Type its unique windswept shape. The first heartline runs up the front fender and across the doors, and the other curves along the flared rear wheel arch and towards the hidden active rear spoiler, which pops up when sensors detect speeds of over 100 km/h. Replacing the 495-horsepower engine found in the RWD S is a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 pumping out a mighty 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Combined with the Instinctive AWD, Instinctive because torque is sent to the front set of wheels only when the computer determines additional traction is required to maintain grip, acceleration from 0-to-100 km/h is achieved in less than four seconds. If only it had the power of the later Bentley Turbo-R, it might have made the Camargue a little more exciting. This model boasted many firsts for this great manufacturer. It was the first post-war production-built Rolls-Royce to be designed by the Italian design house of Pininfarina, and the first of the marque to be designed in metric dimensions. It was the first Rolls-Royce to feature a slanted grille, inclined at an angle of seven degrees. (Why they picked seven degrees is a mystery to me!) It provides ideal wear protection and friction reduction across a wide range of operating conditions, while the high detergency allows extended drain intervals and provides increased cleanliness. It features superior high-temperature stability and oxidation resistance to increase lubrication of hot metal parts when compared to some other synthetics. For more information please go to www.redlineoil.com K&N’s AirCharger air intake system replaces the restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing on 2008-2013 BMW M3 models. The intake is designed to greatly reduce air intake restriction as well as smooth and straighten airflow, which allows your engine to inhale a larger amount of air than the factory air assembly. This results in more usable power throughout the engine’s RPM range. The air intake comes with a chrome topped K&N high-flow air filter and heat shield that installs into the original air box space. Gains of 13.43 horsepower can be experienced when using the intake. For more information please go to www.knfilters.ca MSD Gen 5 Chevrolet LT1 Plug Wire Kit Parts For Any Mopar Everything you need... Once that is done, you are able to apply the pre-loaded performance tunes to your vehicle, one for 93 octane fuel and the other for 91 octane. The 93 octane tune adds 30 horsepower and 30 lb-ft of torque, while the 91 octane option gives you a boost of 28 horsepower and 22 lb-ft of torque. An additional option is a factory horsepower tune that keeps the horsepower the same but allows you to modify various vehicle parameters.
