The First Certificate Exam (“FCE”) is at a Level 3 of the Cambridge five level system. The FCE has widespread recognition in commerce and industry as proof of language ability at the upper intermediate level. Some university faculties, colleges and other institutions also recognize it as fulfilling their English language requirements. This program is offered in 8-, 10-, or 12-week options. Students in the 8-week course join the 10-/12-week course in progress. Discounted Lift Passes and Ski/Snowboard Lessons Offered: December to April only GENERAL ENGLISH COURSES Tamwood’s unique curriculum is designed to develop students’ communication skills in English; to improve their grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation; and to work on the key language areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Tamwood’s teachers are all university graduates with specialized training and certification in teaching English to non-native speakers. Class size averages around 12 students, with a maximum of 15 students accepted in any single Whistler class. Minimum age is 17, and the average age is 26. You will take both the grammar and the conversation class each morning. Full-Time English Hours per week: 20 Offered: Year-round This program focuses on the integration of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It will enable you to communicate effectively in real-life situations. In winter, you will take grammar and conversation in the morning, then break for ski/snowboard lessons or other activities, returning in the late afternoon for a Language Workshop. In summer, you finish at 1:00pm and have the rest of the day free to explore and have fun. CLASS WHISTLER TIMETABLE - Summer TIME 1 8:45-10:45 2 11:00-13:00 Hours per week: 1-20 Offered: Year-round Private lessons are designed to meet the personal needs and goals of the student. Students can combine private and group lessons. Private lessons are offered only in the late afternoons and are offered subject to availability and classroom space. Ski Instructor Course (CSIA Level 1) Duration: 3 weeks Students can take the Canadian Ski Instructors Association (“CSIA”) national exam to be a Canadian-certified Level 1 ski instructor. Course fee includes English lessons (13.75 hours/ week) for two weeks, five special evening and afternoon teaching seminars and the CSIA four-day examination, which is offered over two weekends during the course or at the end of the course. Lift tickets and ski lessons are sold separately. ACCOMMODATIONS Duration: 15 days Homestays Grammar Offered: December to April only Conversation Students can take the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors (“CASI”) national exam to be a Canadian certified Level 1 snowboard instructor. Course fee includes English lessons (13.75 hours/week) for two weeks, five special afternoon and evening teaching seminars, and the CASI three-day examination, which is offered at the end of the course. Lift tickets and snowboard lessons are sold separately. Since contact with English speakers is a key component of learning English, we recommend that students take advantage of our Homestay Program, and live with a Canadian family during their study period. Whistler families are inspected by Tamwood and are warm, welcoming, energetic and fun people who look forward to hosting Tamwood students. CLASS * In the winter, Whistler Full Time and Part Time students may be assigned by Tamwood to an afternoon class schedule after their placement test based on their English level, start date, age, and course duration. Students with afternoon classes have free time from 8:30-13:00 for skiing/riding and lunch. ** Lifts open and close at different times throughout the ski season depending on conditions, weather, and time of sunrise and sunset. Skiing and Snowboarding From late November until late May, students can buy lift tickets and lessons to ski or snowboard both Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains through Tamwood. Five-day and season passes are available to Tamwood students at a special, discounted rate. Students can also combine partor full-time English courses with discounted half-day ski or snowboard lessons at the world-famous Whistler Blackcomb Ski and Snowboard School. Instruction is available at all levels from beginner to advanced. SUMMER From June to October, Whistler is a student’s dream! Where else can you study English in the morning and relax in the afternoon with tours and outdoor activities designed for adventure? Combine your General English course with an unlimited summer lift pass for Whistler’s Mountain Bike Park. Glacier Ski and Snowboarding From early June until the end of July, students can spend weekends in the lush alpine, skiing and snowboarding on Whistler’s Horstman Glacier. The lifts open to the public at 11:00 and close at 15:00, so everyone has plenty of time to work on their turns, tricks, and tans.
