What inspires you to lace up your shoes and run? After moving to Ocala, Florida in
2003, I started running the Florida Greenway trails near my home with my Australian
Shepherds. In October 2004, I ran my first 5k race with my dog, Shadow, and I was instantly hooked on running races with them. In the 9 years that I lived in Ocala I ran 318
races and 185 of them were with one of my dogs. Most of the regular runners in Ocala
did not know my name, I am sure I was just known as the guy that runs with his dogs.
I have lots of stories regarding my dogs in races. I have an Australian Shepherd, Apple,
who ran a bunch of races with 3 legs. I lost track of how many times I heard “I can’t believe I got beat by a 3-legged dog”. After one race I heard a father ask his son how he did
and he said “Not good Dad, I got owned by a 3-legged dog.” My wife went to our family
doctor wearing one of my Ocala Reindeer Run T-shirts. The lady at the front desk asked
my wife if she was a runner. My wife said, “No, my husband runs but nobody knows him,
everybody knows his dogs.” The lady said, “Oh Apple, I love Apple.”
The reason I run every day is due to the enjoyment I get running with my dogs. If I was just training by myself and always running races by myself I am sure I would have quit years ago. I keep a
spreadsheet with the race statistics for my 7 dogs. To date, they have completed over 210 races
and collectively logged nearly 19,000 miles!
What was your most memorable race? I have had so many memorable races, it is really hard to
pick the top one, but if I were to choose one it would be the first year I ran the Daytona Half Marathon with my Golden Retriever, Kati. The first year that Daytona had a half marathon it started with
a lap around the race track and I really wanted to be able to run the race with Kati. I emailed the
race director and asked if I could run with my dog and he said no. I tried several more times and
he finally said not for the 1st year of the race, but maybe she could run the following year. So
shortly after the first race I emailed the race director again and asked if I could run with Kati. He
agreed and Kati was a hit at that race! Kati and I got to run around the Daytona race track for the
first 2 miles and since her picture was on the front page of the sports section of the Daytona newspaper the day before people knew about her before she even got there. I got pictures of Kati on
the race track, at the track finish line and Victory Lane. Krispy Kreme was a race sponsor and Kati
liked their donuts.
What are your goals for 2014 and beyond? Well, I’m 56 so I don’t recover from
Full and Half Marathons as fast as I used to. But my first goal is to stay healthy so
I can continue to train during the week and run races on the weekend. Additional
goals would be to eventually get 1,000 total races and to continue working on the
50 marathons in 50 states.
And of course, my last goal is to continue to be known as “the guy that runs with
his dogs”!

The Story Behind the Logo
Have any of you ever found yourself running behind a fellow fanatic and wondered “what’s the deal with the
crazy guy on our shirts?!” - well now is your chance to find out…
First of all, as the Marathon Maniacs were the original club, the logo was initially fashioned for them and has been modified for the Half Fanatics, so the following story begins with the creation of the original MM logo, as told by our
“Founding Fathers”.
As the whole Maniac idea was coming together we thought we needed a logo to make us look as unique as our club
was. We got together with a fellow running buddy Mark Ariyoshi who is a graphic designer. Mark suggested that we incorporate characteristics of the three founding Maniacs (Steve Yee #1, Chris Warren #2, and Tony Phillippi #3) into an
animated character that would represent a true Marathon Maniac. Everyone loved the idea and Mark was soon collaborating ideas from each of us on our daily tempo runs to come up with
the right mix to keep the three of us happy. His first goal was to make
the guy look like a Maniac, that's where the bulging eyes and tongue
hanging out come in. Chris has a tendency to swing his right arm out
as he is running, that's why the right arm is placed where it is. Steve
always wore his Timex GPS watch while doing training runs, that's
what's on the left arm going "beep beep beep" (a feature that was removed from the HF logo). Tony's first website and also his personalized license plate were PF FLYER, so this was written on the side of
the shorts. Tony said before every race "LETS BURN SOME RUBBER" so the smoke was added behind the shoes. Also Tony has a
huge battle breaking three hours in the marathon, that's why the
watch reads "2:59:59". Steve and Tony would frequently tease Chris
about a comment that was made from a member of the Dead Runners
Society, "the dazzling smile of Chris Warren", this explains the gleam
off of the tooth. Another difference between the MM and the HF logo
is the hair on the fanatic. The hair was added to emulate, The Gatekeeper’s (Marc Frommer #9) hair.
Now to answer the question that everyone really wants to know,
What's up with the vulture??? Well the original logo has a cat mascot
(you can check out the MM website for the story behind the cat), so
the HFs needed a mascot too. During the inception of the new club,
we thought we would pay tribute to The Programmer (Brian Pendleton
#5) by incorporating something about him into the logo. Brian is an
avid bird watcher and during most of his races will take numerous pictures of various birds. Thus the vulture is for Brian…. and that kind of
bird seemed appropriate due to the crazy nature of the club.
Hope this helps make him slightly more endearing!

The inaugural running of the DreamCatcher Half Marathon took place in Grand Junction, CO on March 8, 2014. A new half marathon by Starunner Enterprises, the event
utilized a reverse-wave system with the longer finishing times starting before the
jackrabbits: 7:00 am start for 4 hour and greater expected finish time; 8:00 am start for
3-4 hour expected finish time; 9:00 am start for 2-3 hour expected finish time; and 9:30
am start for those expected to finish in less than 2 hours. It was a cool start to the
morning, but it warmed up nicely by the time everyone made it to the finish line. The
after-party was hosted at a local brewery, Edgewater Brewery by Kannah Creek, and
the runners availed themselves to good food, good beer and good times. The 2 nd Annual DreamCatcher Half Marathon will take place on March 7, 2015 – mark it on your
calendar to come join us in Western Colorado!
