Chairman's Message
Beyond Charity and
Good Work
Corporate social responsibility goes beyond onetime charity and donation. While discharging
corporate social responsibilities, we have to take
into account the corresponding impact on all
stakeholders and on the environment. And this
certainly calls for an integrated approach to
balance the needs of all stakeholders with its own
need to make profits and reward them
adequately.
It is therefore a continuing commitment to behave
ethically, contribute to economic development
and improve the quality of life of the workforce and
their families, the local community and society at
large. This holistic approach shows business
enterprises as being full partners in their
communities, rather than seeing them more
narrowly as being primarily in business to make
profits and serve the needs of their shareholders.
We can never lose sight of our responsibility to the
outside world and our employees. But to be really
sustainable in the long run, companies need to
link business opportunity to sustainable
development. By harnessing their creativity and
innovation, companies can find new products,
embark on new initiatives and develop new
markets and business models that can deliver a
better quality of life to all, for now and for the
future.
It is this approach that is making LIGHT stand
apart. Be it providing water to poor rural
communties, helping artisans of traditional arts,
distributing mobility devices among the differently
abled or sponsoring sports activities, the primary
objective is to evolve a system to make the larger
community self-supporting. And it is beginning to
happen.
The rural communties have begun to take care of
the arrangements made for supplying water. The
same is the story of the artisans. They have started
to respond to the inputs given by coming out with
new ideas and forms. The differently abled have
learned to look at life positively, instead of cursing
their fate. Sportspersons are making use of every
opportunity to excel, bringing laurels to
themselves and the State. It is a silent revolution
that is sweeping across Andhra Pradesh.
It is also an evolving process involving business
and community as partners. There is a lot more to
happen. All that is required is to continue to
remain as responsible partners committed to each
other.

Sujalavahini
Providing Safe Water to the Rural Poor
Integrating Community Participation
It is an avowed mission of LIGHT to make safe water available to as many poor rural communities as possible. In the
process, efforts are being made to integrate community participation to the whole approach. There are encouraging
signs of change with some of the communities taking the initiative to maintain their tube-wells.

More Villages under Ambit
LIGHT added another 166 tube-wells for the rural
communities covering 30 villages of 14 mandals in
Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. All the tube-wells

Safe Water for School Students
LIGHT not only digs tube-wells for water deficit village
communities but also provides facilities to them for safe
drinking. Moved by the plight of the students of Zilla
Parishad High School at Nandigama near Vijayawada in
the sweltering summer, LIGHT provided them with a
water cooler. The initiative was part of the efforts made by
LIGHT to provide safe water to needy people living
around.

Shraddha
Caring for the Differently Abled
Reaching out to Heal
LIGHT has reached out to Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu in its mission of caring for the differently abled. The artificial
limb fitting centres set up at Korba in Chhattisgarh and Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu aim to provide succour to hundreds
of physically handicapped people living around. LIGHT has also made headway in reaching out to the differently abled in
Andhra Pradesh through various social activities.
LIGHT now covers three states, six districts and 5000 panchayats. In all around 1200 handicapped people have been
identified and supported. A few intermediary civil society organisations have been oriented and enabled to engage for
the cause of the disabled. As stated in the past, a lot more needs to be done in collaboration with like-minded
organisations and committed individuals to have a sustainable impact.

LIGHT ALFC - Vijayawada distributed mobility devices
among the patients identified during the identification
camps conducted earlier in different parts of the State,
particularly in the districts of Krishna, Prakasam, Guntur
and West Godavari.
ALFC also tried to partner with government and other
institutions to provide necessary support to the differently
abled in the region by developing various integrated
programmes.

ALFC - Vijayawada Turns One Year
ALFC Vijayawada turned one year on 3 December
2005, the International Day for Disabled Persons.
Film artiste Nutan Prasad presided over the
celebrations. Children of Madonna School for Deaf,
Integrated School for Blind and Manasika Vikasa
Kendram presented a number of cultural items.
Distribution Camp in
Kandukuru, Prakasam
LIGHT organised a distribution camp at
Kandukuru in Prakasam district on 25 January
2006. The camp was inaugurated by Minister
of State for Human Resources Development
Daggubati Purandeshwari Devi.
Distribution Camps in Guntur
Artificial limbs were distributed among differently abled
students at the residence of Lagadapati Rama
Lakshamma in Guntur on 6 March 2005. Guntur
Corporator Rayapati Mohan Krishna presided over the

programme. Another distribution camp was organised
in Guntur on 26 March 2006 by Asya Vysya Kalyana
Mandapam, facilitated by Vasvi Club, Guntur.

Aid for Visually Impaired Person
Dasari Amulya Rao, a visually impaired person, has set
up an institute of spoken English at Tenali in Andhra
Pradesh with financial assistance from LIGHT. Amulya
Rao is a Postgraduate in English Literature, specially
trained in Functional English. He also holds B Ed degree
and Sahitya Ratna in Hindi.

A New Lease of Life!

When a major road accident
rendered me handicapped for life, I
thought there was nothing to live for.
With my aged parents, wife and two
children as dependents, I did not
know what to do. It was impossible
to pursue agriculture, the only
occupation I knew.
It was around that time, I came to
know about Artificial Limb Fitting
Centre at Vijayawada. Encouraged
by my family and friends, I visited the
centre, seeking their help. The
centre was quick to respond and
they provided me with an artificial
below knee prosthesis. My joy knew
no bounds.
I am able to walk now. I also run a
small shop in my village, selling
everyday items. I am grateful to
LIGHT for giving me a new lease of
life. If LIGHT has not come forward,
I just can't imagine what would have
happened to me!

A New Surge of Confidence
Yadala Padmanabham,
Peerala village, Cheerala mandal
in Prakasam district.
Young and energetic, I was always
rearing to go. I used to try my hand on
practically everything. I wanted to be
a big, successful person one day. But
a truck accident in 1985 changed
everything, shattering my dreams.
I was operated upon in Government
Hospital, Guntur. Thereafter I tried
using different artificial limbs. When
all those limbs failed to make me
comfortable, I approached LIGHT
Artificial Limb Fitting Centre at
Vijayawada. The artificial below
knee prosthesis provided by LIGHT
is much better. Now I feel very
comfortable. I am able to move
around freely. My business is also
doing well. LIGHT has given me a
lot of confidence.

Artificial Limb Fitting Centre - Korba
(Inaugurated on 24 August 2005)
Chhattisgarh Minister of Forest and Agriculture
Nankiram Kanwar inaugurated LIGHT Artificial Limb
Fitting Centre in Korba. He appreciated the initiative of
LIGHT in providing succour to the disabled in the district.
Korba District Collector Gaurav Dwivedi also lauded the
efforts made by the centre and suggested that the centre
should have an integrated approach towards the
differently abled.
Thereafter Artificial Limb Fitting Centre - Korba had been
working with like-minded organisations and individuals in
addressing the concerns of the differently abled, apart
from providing them with basic mobility devices.
As part of its efforts towards this direction, LIGHT Artificial
Limb Fitting Centre - Korba organised identification camps
in different blocks of the district.
Disabled Persons Day Observed
Mayor Lakhanlal Dewangan inaugurated the
International Day for Disabled Persons celebrations at
Korba. He appealed to LANCO to promote more
activities in the future as well. On the occasion, disabled
people were given mobility devices free.

Screening Camp Held for
the Disabled
LIGHT Artificial Limb Fitting Centre in Korba extended
its support to Project TEAM of Dhigdharshika, a
voluntary organisation based in Bhopal, along with
Ankur, a Special School for the Mentally
Handicapped. The District Administration also
supported the initiative. Nearly 350 people suffering
from various disabilities took part in the programme
organised on 10 January 2006.

Back to Work Once Again!
Mahetru Ram, Kalimandir,
Pordibahar in Korba.
In March 2006, I was crossing the
railway track in Korba,
Chhattisgarh. It was pitch dark,
making it difficult to see. Suddenly
the whole place shook as a train
happened to arrive unexpectedly. In
the confusion that followed, I
slipped and fell down with one of my
hands spread across the track. The
train ran over, severing my arm right
on the spot. Fortunately I was
spotted by the railway squad and
admitted to Korba District Hospital
for treatment.
It took a lot of time for the wounds to
heal. Meanwhile I was wondering
what to do with just one hand. It was
around that time I heard about
LIGHT Artificial Limb Fitting Centre
at Korba. The staff at the centre
heard my story and gave me a
functional prosthesis. I was very
happy with the way they treated me
at the centre. They asked me to
come back if I felt any discomfort
again.
I am very happy now. I am able to
perform all kinds of work using my
artificial hand.

Tamil Nadu
Artificial Limb Fitting Centre
- Kumbakonam
(Inaugurated on 20 March 2006)
As part of expanding the work of assisting the
differently abled across the country, ALFC has been
set up at Kumbakonam. ABAN Power Company Ltd
Vice President V Ravindran inaugurated the centre on
20 March 2006.
Besides making efforts to enter into partnership with
like-minded organisations and state government
institutions, the centre has been trying to achieve
optimal utilisation of its existing programmes for the
differently abled.
In this connection, LIGHT officials attended a
meeting organised by Rotary Club at Kumbakonam
on 19 March 2006 and sought their support in
organising camps for the differently abled in the area.

Promoting Traditional Arts
New Frontiers in Caring
In order to promote Kondapalli Bommalu (Kondapalli Toys), LIGHT provides training to the artisans in improving their
skills. They have been taught to use vegetable colour dyes and seasoned wood and improve packaging of the products.
Besides buying the toys as corporate gifts, Bima Yojana (Insurance Cover) has also been provided for the artisans.

Kondapalli Bommalu is a 400-year-old tradition, passed on
from generation to generation. The exquisite toys have a
lifelike quality in expressing rural ambience and mythological
characters. They are painted in vibrant colours obtained from
natural dyes by the artisans living in Kondapalli and its
surrounding villages. Kondapalli toys are unique as they are
made from the wood Tella Poniki (White Sander), which is
found only in Ibrahimpatnam and G Konduru of Krishna
District and parts of Adilabad district in Andhra Pradesh.
In addition, LIGHT, along with Kondapalli Artisans MACT
Society, filed for the Geographical Indication application at GI
Registry in Chennai to promote Kondapalli Bommalu as a
brand, safeguard the interests of the artisans and prevent any
unauthorised use of their art under the Geographical
Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999.
LIGHT takes this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions
made by its partners in this regard: Craft Council of Andhra
Pradesh, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Hyderabad,
AP Forest Academy, Dullapalli, CII APTS & Anand & Anand Co

Tapping Sports Potential
LIGHT believes in the potential of sportspersons. It has therefore been at the forefront in supporting sports. Besides
organising various sports activities, LIGHT has been encouraging sportspersons through sponsorship.

Rajagopal Vows to Promote Sports
The nineteenth edition of the Olympic Day Run in Hyderabad
on 23 June 2005, organised by the Andhra Pradesh Olympic
Association headed by L Rajagopal, MP and LIGHT
Chairman, had more than 30,000 students and
sportspersons from 14 districts in the state as participants.
This was in sharp contrast to the run in 2004 in which around
6000 people participated.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajagopal said he was happy with
the good response that the run had evoked. He reiterated his
commitment to identifying and nurturing talents of
sportspersons in Andhra Pradesh.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy
reaffirmed his government's commitment to providing
adequate funds and additional infrastructure to nurture
sports talents in the state.
Rain Fails to Dampen Spirits!
LANCO Asian Junior Tennis Tournament in Hyderabad was
called off following heavy rain. The organisers declared the
finalists as joint winners. In the boys section, Man Singh
Athare and Raunak Manuja shared the title. Aishwarya
Srivasthava and Archan V got the title in the girls section.
LANCO Group Director L Sridhar gave away the prizes. Film
actor Raja graced the occasion with his presence.
Tennis Tournament Organised
LANCO Group Director L Sridhar flagged off LANCO-JHIC
Tennis Tournament for boys and girls under 16. The
tournament began with a welcome gathering organised at
JHIC Tennis Ground by Tennis Trust and LANCO.
The tournament concluded with the prize distribution
ceremony. LIGHT Chairman L Rajagopal graced the
occasion.
Sports Kit Distributed
Sports uniforms were distributed among boys and girls who
took part in a health run organised by Krishna District Sports
Authority in Vijayawada on 25 May 2005. B Dharma Teja,
Vice-President (Operations), LKPPL, presided over the
programme.

Initiatives at Urban Health
Centre at Ranigarithota
In addition, vaccination was carried out against rubella
infection. Rubella is a contagious viral infection mainly
known by the distinctive red rash that appears on the skin
of those who contract the illness. However, rubella is
neither as infectious nor usually as severe as measles.
There is one important exception: If a pregnant woman
contracts rubella, especially during her first trimester,
the virus can cause death or serious birth defects in the
developing foetus. Taking this into account, around
300 adolescent girls were vaccinated at the centre
during the year.
LIGHT organised free distribution of medicines at Urban
Health Centre at Ranigarithota in Vijayawada. The
centre run by NRI Academy of Sciences had been
assured of free medicines all through the financial year.
On an average, 80-100 patients from Ranigarithota and
its surrounding areas visited the centre. Most of the cases
brought in were of viral infection, arthritis, malaria,
diabetes and hypertension. Medicines were also given to
pregnant women. In fact around 100 pregnancy cases
were registered at the centre every month.
Aid for Freedom Fighter's Widow
Moved by the plight of A Sundaramma (75), the
widow of E Arunachalam, a freedom fighter popularly
known as EA Chalam, LIGHT came forward to provide
her a lifetime pension of Rs 1000 per month.
Arunachalam was the editor of Voice of Rayalaseema, a
Telugu news daily owned by him. He had rejected all
monitory benefits offered to him by the Central and State
Governments. He breathed his last on 19 March 1985,
leaving behind his wife, two sons and four daughters.
Of them, two sons and two daughters have been married
and Sundaramma has been living with her two
unmarried daughters. Finding herself in serious financial
difficulties, Sundaramma finally applied for Widows
pension as well as Freedom Fighters pension from the
administration but in vain.
Reading about her saga in a local daily, LIGHT
sanctioned a sum of Rs 1000 as a lifetime pension for
Sundaramma. The first pension amount was handed
over to her by Nagaprasad Kandimalla, Director and
CEO of Clarion Power Corporation and Rithwik Energy
Systems, in the presence of District Collector Shamsher
Singh Rawat.

Succour for the Flood-hit
LANCO Awards for
Recognising Inspirational Models
LANCO has instituted LANCO Awards to recognise inspirational
role models, who have shown exemplary, significant and sustained
commitment in their respective fields, invariably leading to
betterment of society. They are recognised and presented as role
models to inspire others to serve society as selflessly as possible.
Every year five awards of Rs 5 lakh each will be given to
individuals or organisations under five categories - Education;
Health Care; Law, Justice and Human Rights; Public Awareness,
Advocacy and Leadership; and Public Service and Community
Development. The jury will consist of eminent persons chosen
from different walks of life.
A sudden depression in the Bay of
Bengal resulted in a downpour in the
coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh. The
situation turned grave when the River
Krishna started to rise at an alarming
rate. The flood gates were opened on
the Prakasam Barrage, resulting in
inundating the low-lying areas. Poor
people inhabiting these areas were
badly hit, necessitating immediate
government intervention.
LIGHT, along with the government
functionaries, swung into action
evacuating the people living on the
banks at Ibrahimpatnam, Mulapadu
and Vijayawada. The evacuees were
sheltered at Jakir Hussain College and
MRO office in Ibrahimpatnam Circle
and Mulapadu.
In all 1200 people were provided
temporary shelter during the flood. In a
bid to mitigate their sufferings, LIGHT
distributed about 3000 litres of milk and
large quantities of food among them.
Aid for Kids Carnival
LIGHT extended financial assistance to
Make-A-Wish Foundation towards
organising a six-day Kids Carnival 2005
- An Event for a Cause' at Prasad's Imax
in Hyderabad from 9 to 14 April 2005.
Rs 1 Million for Girls Hostel
LIGHT donated Rs 1 million towards constructing a hostel for
girls in Kadapa. The building would have a built-up area of
20,000 sq feet to accommodate 200 girl students with facilities
like residential rooms, common hall, dining hall, kitchen and
storeroom. The hostel, managed by the Shri K Koti Reddy and
Smt K Rama Subbamma Charitable Trust, is meant to provide
accommodation to girls studying in Government Women's
Degree College in the town.
Book on Mahatma Gandhi
LIGHT gave Rs 2 lakh to Venugopal
towards publishing Mahatma Gandhi's
days in South Africa titled
'Gandhisakam' in Telugu.
