This stimulating guide to Texas emigration, describes the state in glowing terms, including “Character of the People of Texas” earnestly refutes as false the contention than Texans are “violent and disorderly” and that “there may be and probably are some disorderly persons in the country. Articles include land, laws, stock raising (“Western Texas is the paradise of stock raisers”), cattle drives in 1875 (“large numbers of cattle have been driven from the Mexican frontier to Northwestern Texas to avoid raiders”), “Sheep Husbandry in Western Texas” (by John James), superiority of Mexican hides, essays on major cities, railroads and transportation, “Some Account of the Mineral Wealth of Texas” (by A. R. Roessler, along with another article by him), etc. Roessler enthuses: “Texas is, or will be, the wealthiest State in the Union, possessing as she does great agricultural capabilities, all the varieties of soils minerals, and useful rocks known to exist in the world.”Of special interest is Roessler’s ad (p. 86) for his map establishment located at 52 Beekman Street in New York, specializing in Texas maps “for a very small price.” Raines p. 107 misspells Hanford as Hansford, published annually from 1856-79 when it was absorbed by Burke's Almanac. SVENSKARNE I TEXAS I ORD ACH BILD; Swedes in Texas in Words & Pictures 1835-1918 Volume I only. Austin: 1919. First ed. Historic photographs, text in Swedish language. Lacking volume II. 604pp. Recently bound in maroon leatherette with gilt spine titles. Very clean bright and time with deterioration to inside corners of pages 588604 mostly in the margin with minor loss of text on a few pages. Very Good. Although the text is in Swedish, the 100's of photos, the organization by community, and the 1000's of names make this 2 volume set more than a very valuable rare Texas book; This book is an important resource for those interested in the settlement of early Texas by immigrants from Sweden. Swedes comprise one of the largest of European ethnicities in Texas. Swedish names abound throughout the state both in family and place names. Virtually every walk of life was filled by people of Swedish origins and they have been among the most successfully prosperous groups from the earliest days of their arrival. it is a useful tool for those wishing to trace the family history of their Swedish/Texan forebears. The first volume begins with a general history of Texas and the role of Swedes in forming the new nation/state. It goes on to describe the general business, agricultural, and social aspects of Texas. It is significant that foremost among the chapters are those about educational and religious practices. The communities covered in Volume 1 are: Austin, Palm Valley (Eastern Round Rock), New Sweden, Brushy (old Round Rock), Georgetown, Taylor, and Hutto. Volume 2 continues with coverage of the communities of: Decker, Ericsdale, Jonah, Elroy, Kenedy, Manor, E. Sweden, W. Sweden, Brady, Melvin, Ft.Worth, El Campo, Dallas, Waco, Lund, Type, Kimbro, Manda, Ganado, Crosby, Elgin, Louise, Galveston, Olivia, Temple, Swedonia, Bishop, Swensondale, Lyford, San Antonio, Houston. The final pages of this massive work are dedicated to showing the "Service Flags" of various communities of Swedes who served in the just-ended WWI. These include the rank, company, and location and years of service. (14061) $250.00 345. Shanks, Ann. LAREDO: REFLECTIONS. Laredo, Tx: Velia E. Uribe, 1985. Interspersing his narrative with some biographical information on Sam Colt and his company, Wilson traces the development of the company line with more than 400 photos. The fine engraving and rich textures are shown to advantage in Latham's photographs. Every model produced is described and illustrated, including rare pieces. An invaluable appendix traces the complete serial numbers and years of manufacture. Of interest to collectors and students of the history of technology, this is highly recommended. - George F. This is his story and that of other Clark family members ranched in Victoria County and other parts of the Brush Country around Realitos. One family member spent ten years riding with Pancho Villa. This is a rich history full of South Texas anecdotes about rangers, cattle ranching, family struggles and daily life in not only the Clark families but that of their neighbors. 48
