Filipino families in Australia to lose
An issue already four
years in the making, Australia’s banks are joining many
of the world’s largest big
banks in mitigating money
laundering and financing of
terrorists groups by closing
bank accounts of money remittance providers’ nestled
in Australia, thereby affecting hundreds of migrant
communities across the
country.
The problem arose as a
result of the lack of antimoney laundering controls
that the big banks require
which most money transfer
companies all over Australia are not able to practice.
The said “loophole” may
be a means by which these
so-called terrorist groups
are funded albeit in small
amounts.
The closure of bank accounts of remitters, according to Forex Australia Manager, Enrique Campos Jr.,
will affect migrant communities in Australia including Filipinos. “Hundreds of
thousands of Filipino migrants will no longer be able
to support their families
and communities overseas.
For many Filipinos living
in Australia, the low-cost,
secure money transfer services of registered remit-
ters is the only way they
can send essential funds
home safely and securely,”
said Campos in a statement
released to the community.

made history by having the

to grace its Melbourne Cup
Eve Dinner-Dance last 3
November 2014 at La Mirage

Melbourne Cup celebration
of the Filipino community with more than 700
Filipino-Australians and
guests enjoying the night of
fashion and glamour.
The event was able to
raise more than $10,000, including the $1,335.20 from
envelope donations on the
tables. The amount raised
will be used by the Club to
finance its various projects
in the Philippines.
Now on its 32nd year, the
Pampangueño Club offered
the guests good food, generous raffle prizes like return
trip to the Philippines and a
lot of dancing to the delight
of the guests.

the group has been raising
funds to provide assistance
to the less fortunate in
Davao City, Philippines and
in Australia.
For 2014, some its projects were: tree planting in
Hallam, donation of medical supplies to the Southern
Philippines Medical Center
in Davao, donation of eight
digital cameras for the deaf
and mute school children in
Davao, and cash donations
for children with cerebral
palsy in Davao City.

A not so merry
Christmas
In the Philippines, the Christmas season begins as soon as the ber months set
in, though many prefer to wait until All
Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day are over
before they start putting up the holiday
decors.
Regardless, it all boils down to one thing:
Filipinos love Christmas. We like the chilly
air while attending the nine-day Simbang
Gabi (dawn Mass), the local snacks right
after such as puto bumbong and a mug of
piping-hot cocoa, the almost-endless parties, and, most of all, the celebrations we
have with our friends and family.
In Australia, the Filipinos are now the
fifth biggest ethnicity with more than
150,000 residents as of census 2006. While
a good number of us have succeeded in
bringing our immediate families here,
many still have loved ones back home.
The problem is, come Christmas, these
families will not be reunited to spend the
most festive of seasons.
There are many reasons why this is so.
One is debt. A number of Filipinos who
get lucky to work in Australia are actually
buried in huge debts that take years and
more than a third of their income to pay.
In other words, what is left to them is just
enough to send back home and pay for
their basic needs here. Sometimes they
find themselves with hardly anything
left.
Christmas can also be a sad reminder
for them—a brutal one—of the things
and people they have to give up not
only to chase a dream but to put food
on their family’s table and send their
children to a decent school. Being away
from their family is a battle of will and
loneliness that is only amplified when
they realise that they will not be around
during Noche Buena and Media Noche.
Many Filipino workers also feel as if
they are taken for granted, perhaps because many families back home see overseas work through rose-coloured glasses:
it is usually not glamorous but rather
backbreaking. This is more pronounced
at Christmas times when some families
back home may be looking forward more
to presents than their loved one’s actual
presence.
Christmas is a fun-filled season that
many look forward to, but it is also a time
of reflection, and often it means Filipino
workers in Australia are clearly reminded
of what they do not have: a family they
can physically hug, kiss, and say I love
you to. It is the kind of emotional void and
disconnect that not even a lengthy chat
over Skype or Facetime can fill.

November proved to be a month
for remembering and giving
thanks. We brought to mind and
were grateful for the memories
of our departed loved ones in
our traditional observance of All
Souls Day and we commemorated and showed our appreciation
for the bravery and commitment
of those fallen in conflict and
war on the Day of Remembrance.
We also remembered Typhoon
Haiyan (Yolanda), one of the
strongest tropical cyclones ever
recorded, which devastated the
Central Visayas a year ago claiming over 6,300 lives and displacing millions more. Yolanda
severely damaged around 1.1
million tonnes of crops and 44
million coconut trees, wiping out
farming and fishing communities
along with some of our motherland’s most productive regions.
Yet, as we recollect the impact
of such a destructive storm, there
is much for which we can be
thankful as the world continues
to come together to help rebuild
people’s lives and restore their
self-reliance. Nearly $40 million
in support from the international
community is reviving over
150,000 farming and fishing
families. The recovery is also
ensuring that when the next typhoon hits, the impacts are more
manageable and they are able to
re-establish more quickly.
As your Consul, I wish to
express my own personal thank
you to the many individuals in
the Filipino-Australian community of Victoria who give their
time so freely and willingly to
organise fiestas, fundraising activities, dinner dances, auctions,
raffles and the like.
These wonderful events bring
our kababayans together often to
celebrate and support so many
worthwhile causes, particularly
those that help the poor and disadvantaged and those suffering from
adversity, to advance the common
good of Filipino Australians.
As we approach the holiday
season, when families come
together to celebrate and our
awareness of natural disasters
such as bushfires is heightened,
let us share the prayer of the
Philippine Council of Bishops
on the National Day of Prayer
for the victims and survivors of
Typhoon Yolanda:
Most loving Father,
One year ago, the fury of Typhoon Yolanda made us experience darkness and the pain of
losing everything; it made us understand the meaning of despair.
But in the midst of all these,
You never have forsaken us.
In the most special way, You
gifted us courage and strength to
rise again.
In the most loving way, You
shielded us with mercy and
compassion.
And you accomplished miracles through those who came to
our aid.
And as we remember that day

Mega Nurses hold “Smile for a Cause 2014”

row, Mega Nurses, a group of
Filipino nurses based mainly
at Sunshine Hospital in
Sunshine and Footscray, as
well as few others working at
Royal Melbourne and the Alfred Hospital held a dinnerdance during the Melbourne
Cup eve last 3 November
2014 at the Lakeside Banquet
and Convention Centre in
Taylors Lakes.

Edna Parolma said all proceeds of the event will be
donated to the Smile for a
Cause project of the “Share-
me-a-Dream”, another
cause-oriented Filipino community social club headed
by Choy Symes. However,
both declined to confirm the
amount of proceeds to be donated to the club due to their
confidentiality agreement.

Retrospective
About this time last
year, I was two weeks into
a self-imposed online hiatus that lasted almost a
whole six months. It was a
much-needed respite fuelled
mainly by an uncontrollable
lifestyle and the lack of
creative inspirations. How
times have changed.
It’s funny looking back
to see that much of what I
was concerned about back
then were quite simply
trifle issues; insignificant
in the whole scheme of
things and yet reverberated
so potently in the moment.
I guess nothing affects so
profoundly than what you
are so blindly immersed in.
Perspective can be a much
skewed thing.
I never really talked about
what happened in the time
that I put my life offline. I
guess it was just life going
on. A whole lot of everything and a lot of nothing.
Still, for the sake of a retrospective, let’s take a stroll
down that lane. Come, hold
my hand.
It all began with a relationship that failed to
launch. I was seeing a guy at
the time and treading gingerly into the potential but we
both somehow came to the
same conclusion that what
we had wasn’t really going
where we had intended it to.
We became friends instead.
I was fine – and yet still felt
heartbroken.
In the meantime, my continuing status as a single out
and about party animal provided the much convenient
excuse to go out, mingle and
meet a whole lot of people.
The late night partying and
the lack of sleep gradually
caught up with me and I was
a careening train-wreck. I
lost it at quite possibly the
worst time and place. A
particularly difficult client
at work wore the full brunt
of my increasing frustration
and sourly demeanour. The
result: a slagging match that
saw spittle fly, faces flushed
and her giving me the finger as she stormed out the
door. I was left shaken and
disturbed – and took the following week off from work.
Everyone was glad, not the
least of which was me.
The time-out proved to
be a great healer as I began
to sort some things out that
needed much sorting. I also
began a fitness regime that
saw me being at my leanest
and beefiest. I was a much
fitter and sexier self by the
time I flew out on my holiday abroad. It helped, you
know, with meeting and getting to know the locals. Lots
of tripping, lots of tropicalflavoured partying and lots
of life-changing experiences.
And before you know it, the
plane was landing on the
tarmac back home.
Six months. It was a whole
lot of nothing but plenty of
everything.
I learnt three things from
that time. One: that life presents itself from the harshest
of light to the most blissful; you just can’t pick and
choose. Two: I am far more
capable than I believe myself to be; I just need to learn
to temper my (re)actions.
And three: that in spite of
how dramatic and drastic
things may seem, it will all
eventually pass.
You live to see another
day, another year, and you
get the opportunity to do
a much timely and needed
retrospective.

Changing lives in the Philippines

Pipeline Ministries International was formed in
1995 by eight friends who
lived in the Geelong area
of Victoria. Following a
visit to the Philippines by
one of them, their hearts
were touched by the needs
of the Filipino communities they had visited. During his time in the Philippines, Ian McKenzie had
met Richard Conte who
headed Victory Churches
of Asia, which at that time,
was a small church com-
munity with two churches:
one in Cabanatuan and one
in Baliuag. Richard and
Ian have become life-long
friends and the communities which Pipeline supports
have grown to almost 30.
To support the communities in the Philippines, Pipeline was formed to provide
financial, spiritual and practical support to organisations
and to Filipino nationals
who are willing to give of
themselves to the special
needs of others. Pipeline
raises funds in Australia
and distributes 100% of the
monies raised to projects,
communities and individu-
als in the Philippines.
The communities that are
being supported are located
in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya
in the North, Davao and
Romblon in the South plus
a large number in Metro
Manila and surrounds, with
the newest being in Bicol.
Pipeline supports the
communities with livelihood projects, and the
funding of school teachers
and students and community workers. It also funds
buildings and equipment
for schools and their current
project is the building and
fit out of a Women’s Health
Clinic and Children’s Home
Araw ng Pasko
in Bagumbong, Caloocan
City.
Pipeline supports humanitarian programs such
as child feeding in areas
of Metro Manila including
Miramonte and Pulilan.
Financial assistance has
been provided in times of
disaster, as well as food,
clothing and medicine gathered and delivered to areas
in need following several
typhoons including Ondoy
and Haiyan.
There are a number of
other fundraisers coming
up which will finance the
building structure, the electrical work and the fit out
of the building. Pipeline anticipates the children’s home
will be ready for the first
group by this time next year.
When the building is complete, it will also become the
base for training for women.
They will learn skills and
practical things to help them
earn income which in turn
will support the community
where they live.

DURING his visit to Melbourne last August, Cardinal
Luis Antonio Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, encouraged Filipino Melburnians
to be the face of God and the
hope of others, stressing that
their active faith is the gift of
the Philippine Church to the
Church of Melbourne and of
Australia.
Last November 15, this
gift of faith was once again
manifested as Archbishop
Denis Hart ordained three
Filipinos, Cristopher Creo,
Carnilo Daculan and Danilo
Jumonong, into the Order
of Deacon for the Archdiocese of Melbourne, bringing
the number of permanent
deacons in the archdiocese
to 15.
The diaconate is the first
of three orders of ordained
ministry in the Catholic
Church, the other two being
Priests and Bishops. The
Second Vatican Council
restored the ministry of Deacon as a proper and permanent rank of the hierarchy.
Those who are preparing for
the priesthood are still ordained deacons in transition.
Deacons Chris, Neil and
Danny were ordained by
Archbishop Hart after more
than six years of discernment and formation.
At the end of the ordina-
tion Mass, Deacon Chris,
speaking on behalf of the
other two newly ordained
deacons, thanked the Archbishop for accepting them
into the diaconal ministry;
their respective families—
especially their wives; their
respective parish priests
who gave them guidance
and support during formation and the Filipino clergy
and the different Filipino
communities all over the
Archdiocese who attended
the ordination.
He also gave acknowledgment to the Filipino Grand
Chorus of Melbourne for
the additional songs during
the Mass.
Deacons, as directed by
their respective bishops, assist parish priests in Masses,
including preaching from
time to time. They can also
celebrate baptisms, assist
at marriages and conduct
funeral liturgies. After ordination, Archbishop Hart
will be assigning the new
deacons to parishes in the
archdiocese.
Deacon Chris is appointed
to St Catherine of Siena Parish in Caroline Springs. Deacon Neil is assigned to the
parish of St Justin, Wheelers
Hill while Deacon Danny
will carry out his diaconal
ministry at the combined
parishes of St Mary’s and
Holy Eucharist in Malvern
East.

When I was about twenty
years old, I was introduced
to a man who was in his
early thirties. At first he
seemed refined. He invited
me to go out with him, but
I was not interested so I always found a reason to say
no. He started to pursue me,
and for the first time in my
life I felt unsafe. I did not
want to share what was going on with my boyfriend as
he was a top ranking official
who carried high-powered
weapons due to his job. I
was afraid that the situation
would escalate into something tragic.
I examined whether I was
giving him mixed signals so
the next time I encountered
him I told him my honest
feelings. He was very upset
and tried to assault me. Terrified, I needed to confide
the truth to my boyfriend.
Since then he left me alone,
too afraid to come near me. I
was certain that he was paid
a visit. During that time, I
was glad to have protective
network that saved my life.

a personal stance and do

need to start building and
strengthening collaboration among the sectors and
groups whom we can engage. Let us have a healthy
conversation about it. Let
us help our men (who have
their own sets of challenges) to understand, accept
and commit to the need
to change behaviour- that
violence against women is
not acceptable at all.
Let us teach our sons
to build a healthy self
with genuine respect and
concern for our girls and
women and stop community attitudes of justifying,
excusing men’s use of violent behaviour, trivialising
the impact , blame women
for the violence they experience, conceal the dimensions and extent of violence
experienced by women.
At Christmas, while many
of us enjoy the delights of
the season in its full flavour,
some families, especially
disadvantaged women are
struggling with their life,
safety and well-being. Their
wish-list is not a new pair
of shoes, a mouth-watering
turkey on the table, the latest gadget... just their cry for
the abuse, the hurt and the
violence to stop.

Why am I sharing an incident that happened 37
years ago, one that I would
rather keep in the closet of
my memories? And why
at Christmas, a time that
is filled with joy, hope and
merriment.
I recently attended a
course, “Preventing Violence
Against Women.” I was disappointed to hear that Australia, promoted as a lucky
country, is at the bottom
among nations in the Global
Gender Gap Index- in 2012,
ranking 24, (15th in 2006
and 23rd in 2010). This illustrates that Australia is
declining year after year in
its gender–based gaps in
access to resources and opportunities, meaning men
and women have really not
been given equal opportunities. Sweden and Iceland
positioned first, and the Philippines 6, 9 then back to 8.
In a research summary
published by VICHEALTH,
gender equity has been
found to be one of the key
determinants in preventing
violence against women in
Australia. Men, by virtue of
their gender can have the
mind-set that they are the
stronger sex and can exhibit
the dominant power in a

Philippines. The entertainment that was provided
was led by an outstanding
array of Filipino talents both
young and old from the local scene and also from the
Philippines.

Quintero, who has been
operating her remittance
company for the past 24
years, said customers
should join forces with the
remittance companies in
Sydney and other states to
stop these restrictions as
long as the companies are
compliant. “These Filipino
remittance companies are
not really a big threat to
these Australian banks as
we are only doing a small
share of their business. My
message to AUSTRAC is
that we are compliant and
to the banks, we only want
a small share of their business,” she said.
She also asked customers
to be more understanding if remittance companies are stricter in asking
for more documents since
they need to comply to
new regulations set out by
the regulatory board, the
Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre
(AUSTRAC). AUSTRAC
is Australia’s anti-money
laundering and counterterrorism financing regulator and specialist financial
intelligence unit.
Help save remittance
companies
The Australian Remittance
and Currency Providers Association (ARCPA) recently
launched a petition calling
for the Australian banking
industry to reconsider its
decision to close accounts
of money remittance service
providers. The petition says
that money remitters provide an important service
to families and communities. “If you continue not
to bank these businesses,
we will no longer be able
to access these services and
send much-needed funds
overseas. We ask that you
reconsider your decision,
and work with the money
remittance service pro viders to come up with a
solution that enables this
valuable service to continue
to be provided,” the petition
adds.
The same petition urges
customers to support ARCPA’s cause as they will
stand to lose the following:
low remittance fees, higher
exchange rates, same day
transfer of funds, doorto-door money services,
friendly Tagalog-speaking
customer service and a
g r e a t e r m a r ke t c h o i c e ;
enough reasons to consider
these money transfer service companies a critical
means of business in Australia for its migrants.
The issue affects not just
small but also big remittance providers all over
Australia.
Some of the affected
countries are: the Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh,
Pakistan, Fiji, Samoa, Somalia, Colombia and Peru.

$5500 during its 11th Halloween Costume Ball 2014
held last 1 November at
Freccia Azzurra Springvale
Road in Keysborough.
Some kids and adults
took extra effort to make
their Halloween night
worth remembering. Some
came wearing hilarious,
scary or ridiculous costumes all for the spirit of
fun and belly laugh. While
the Ebola suit costume party has sparked controversy
in America, here the Ebola
blood-stained costume of
a young man received the
judges’ nod for its unique
and modern appeal. Kids
were also awarded prizes
for best costumes.
In her welcome address,
CCM Adviser Terry Apines,
thanked guests and sponsors for the support. Marisa
Vedar of Gawad Kalinga

and CCM’s partnership in
helping Capizeños back
home. Philippine-based
singer Isabel Granada provided songs, while Lily
Rose Fashion held a mini
fashion show of its latest

scheduled to meet with Gawad Kalinga Capiz Chapter
in the Philippines to discuss CCM’s plan to assist
poor Capizeños with their
housing problems.

Philippine Fiesta in Gippsland
The two-day Philippine
Fiesta in Gippsland spearheaded by the Samahan ng
mga Pilipino-Australian sa
Gippsland (SPAG) gathered
together guests and supporters from various parts
of Victoria. Some had to
drive two to three hours to
reach to the venue, while
some had to stay overnight
to attend the second day
of the Fiesta. What made
this yearly event a success
was the show of support
and solidarity of individuals, groups and sponsors.
Overall in charge of the
event were husband and
wife, Jerry and Leila Baladjay and SPAG officers and
volunteers.

Austral-Asia Quest
Guests were treated with a
program and dinner at the
Kernott Hall. Philippinebased singer Isabel Granada
serenaded the audience
with her powerful voice.

night was the coronation

Austral-Asia Quest 2014.

violence on women

took oath at the Immigration Park in Morwell, to
promote Prevention of Violence against Women on 9
November 2014. The Australian Filipino Community
Services teams were actively
raising awareness on violence against women in the
Morwell Fiesta. Each team
member helped to gather
men in the Filipino community to register and to take
an oath against violence, as
well as hand out bags and
flyers about local services
and health organisations that
focus on social inclusion and
improving mental health
and wellbeing among elderly
in the community. The men

swore an oath against domestic violence alongside
the Honorary Consul, Felix J.
Pintado, and released white
balloons into the air to promote the coming events of
‘White Ribbon Day’ on the
25 November 2014.

Aida Garcia, a lawyer and
registered migration agent
based in South Australia, was
re-elected as president of the
13th National Conference
of the Filipino Communities Council of Australia
Inc (FILCCA) held on 24-26
October 2014 at Novotel
Hotel, Parramatta in Sydney.
“I lead by example. I believe
in trust, respect, communication and transparency. I have
no hidden agenda in wanting
to be president once again.
I am a people person and
my heart has always been
directed towards the poor
and disadvantaged member
of the community, here and
in the Philippines,” she told

“Facing the Future Together”

world’s strongest typhoon,
Haiyan, which hit the Philippines late last year, one of
FILCCA’s objectives is to help
those worst affected families
of the calamity and coordinate the national efforts to
rebuild the country through
the maximisation of raised
funds and shipped goods.
Targeting the youth to
become future leaders
Garcia said FILCCA will
continue to advocate for
Filipinos in Australia and to
lobby for pension portability.
The group will also target the
youth sector. “In the next two
years, we hope to inspire the
youth and mentor them to
become active members and
participants of FILCCA and
be in a position to take over
the helm of FILCCA leadership,” she explained, noting
that FILCCA is not forgetting

The year 2014 has witnessed a number of significant
events in the Filipino-Australian community. We saw
moments of tribulation such as the winning of FilipinoAustralian Marlisa Punzalan the title, X Factor Australia and
The year that was
the showcase of talents of our community members in HaloHalo Festival. Then we also saw the heightened awareness
on the overlooked issue on abuse and dementia and focused
on the programs created for and by them. Paying it forward
Celebrating our patrons
Our contribution to multicultural
Australian is our veneration for patron saints for which we celebrate
with fervour their feast days. In
January, the Australian Visayan Association of Victoria Inc (AVAVI) led
the biggest Sto Niño festival in Melbourne, which included the usual
Sinulog festivities, a grand Mass and
a reception participated in by other
cultural representatives. “Viva Pit
Senyor” was also the battlecry during
this feast by communities in Hopper’s
Crossing, Bacchus Marsh and other
parts of Australia. Concelebrated with
the Sto Niño festival was the feast of
the Black Nazarene, a replica of which
was first put on parade this year and
a feast day in honour of the Black Nazarene
was celebrated. Also a first for the year was the
celebration of the Ina ng Bicol, or the Our Lady
of Peñafrancia feast in Heidelberg, for which the
first Filipino Mass was also said for the first time.
New Filipino shepherds
Our community was fortunate to have been
blessed with new shepherds to guide the
Filipino flock in deepening its faith. The
community thanked Filipino Chaplain Fr
Loi Viovicente who has since been transferred to Adelaide, while we welcomed
our new Chaplain in Melbourne, Fr. Litoy
Asis. Indeed, 2014 saw some sort of a
“casting coup” for the Filipino religious
as six new deacons were ordained at different points in time: Cristopher Creo,
Carnilo Daculan, Danilo Jumonong,
Novelito Lim, Junray Rayna, Justelle
Callos and Daryl Montecillo.
We were also honoured with a pastoral visit from Filipino Cardinal Luis
Antonio Tagle. During the Mass and the
reception in his honour, he encouraged
the community to live a life of dignity.
The old and the restless
The issue of elderly abuse and other
elderly concerns took on a particular
focus this year and programs designed
for them and by them showed the
community the importance our elders
deserve. The Australian Filipino Community Services led this surge with an
entertainment program called “My Grandparents are Fantastic”. It also staged
a Christmas in July party for its
Planned Activity Group (PAG)
for the seniors of Casey and Dandenong Knox, Seniors and Young
Generation Group. Meanwhile, for
its PAG, the Filipino Community
Council of Victoria Inc and the Philippine Australian Foundation Inc
also had its Christmas in July for the
Damayan group and paid tribute to
Lydia John, a volunteer for 27 years.
Computer training for the elderly
were also conducted to help the seniors use the
Internet to communicate with family and friends.
The Australian Multicultural Senior Support
Group (AMSSG) also had a similar program for
its members, thanks to a government grant. Another laudable project of the AMSSG was their
performance of cultural dances in selected aged
care facilities.

efforts to help distraught kababayans, especially those hit by
typhoon Haiyan in 2013. This compilation shows key events
and milestones in 2014.

Relief for Haiyan survivors
The outpouring of support for Haiyan survivors
seemed to be a cornerstone of fundraising and
relief efforts. Gawad Kalinga (GK) was able to
secure a $1 million-grant from the Australian
Government to build houses and fishing boats
for community livelihood. In its latest report,
GK already turned over a number of housing units and fishing boats in several towns
hit by the super typhoon. Rotary Club of
Brimbank also turned over a donation to the
Rotary Club Iloilo to facilitate distribution
of fishing boats. With the Ilonggo Association, it earlier sent a huge container of
clothing, building materials, tools, kitchen
ware and other food supplies.
ERFFP with the support of organisations in the community also purchased
ambulance boats for rescue missions.
It’s raining beauties
No year would pass without the staging and
participation to beauty pageants. It’s a big year
for pageants this year as we got a franchise
to host the Mutya ng Pilipinas which selects
representatives to compete in the pageant in
the Philippines. Kim Fyfe, Mutya ng Australia
bagged 2nd runner-up honours in the Mutya
pageant, while Mutya ng Melbourne Pauline
Edralin was included in the Top 10 and was
named Ms Friendship. For the first time, we
also secured the franchise for Mr Philippines
which showed that the men have also joined
the pageant bandwagon. Robert Mcnamara
emerged as winner.
A reality show which turned the girl-nextdoor to glam model premiered on C31. Filo
All-Star X featured 12 aspiring Filipino models in which Lisa-Maree Bakker from Sale, Victoria
emerged as grand winner.
Women power
Two women from our community were named as among
the top influential personalities. Filipino Communities
Council of Australia Inc (FILCCA) President Atty. Aida
Garcia was named among the 100 Most Influential Women
by the Filipina Women’s Network. She was cited for her
professional work and civic engagement in the Filipino community. Melba Marginson, on the other hand, was named as
among the recipients of the 100 Women of Influence Awards
for 2014 by the Australian Financial Review and Westpac.
She was recognised for raising awareness and empowering
women through programs and policies developed and
implemented.
Books, books, books
Our writers had a prolific turnout of publications this year.
Manny Asuncion compiled his plays in Seasons, launched
in August this year. It was his lifelong dream to do the
anthology and share it with his audience. Two books on
cooking were also out, including Ma. Neria Soliman’s
Magayon: Souvenir Cookbook: A Taste of Bicol, A Touch of
Class and Yasmin Newman’s 7000 Islands. Both books
celebrated the Filipino cuisine and shared the story
of the Filipino’s love for food. Lorna Ramirez,
meanwhile, launched her inspirational
book titled My Innermost Thoughts.
Entertainment extravaganza
It was another time for laughs and
nostalgia. Nothing could let out a
laugh out loud moment for us than
humour by our very own local comedians. Vhong Navarro and Pooh
brought in the laughs, along with
Filipino-American stand-up comedian
Rex Navarette. For sure, only Pinoys
could relate to a joke highlighting our
penchant for bringing balikbayan boxes which make
the plane take-off challenging.
Nostalgia through songs were delivered by our
favourite Filipino talents brought by different producers. Some of the most loved performers on our stage
included Gary Valenciano, Charice, Lani Misalucha,
Side A, Hotdog and Kamikazee.
Sports crowd favourite
We recognised this year a new darling of the boxing ring
in the person of Randy Petalcorin. He defeated Thai fighter
Lookrak Kiatmungmee during the second round of their
fight, and later clinched the World Boxing Association light
flyweight world title by defeating Walter Tello in Shanghai.
Filipino Stickfighter Andrea Whitley wins Gold in the World
Championship in Cebu.

For this issue, we are
featuring two nurses in our
community, Ms Vilma Rullan-Lleva and Ms Dory Aban.
Both committed nurses,
they have given their time
and lives in service of their
patients and other people
who require love, caring and
attention the most.
My higher calling and
mission
Dory Aban
Dory Aban
My career as a nurse was
fortified by my stint as Nurse
Unit Manager and Clinical
Supervisor for nine years
at the Veterans Memorial
Medical Center in Quezon
City, Philippines. When I
migrated to Australia with
my family in 1989, I started
working as a registered nurse
in 1991 at Alfred Hospital Dialysis Unit before moving to
Sunshine Hospital with the
same specialisation in 1995.
I’m currently an Associate Nurse Unit Manager
at Sunbury Haemodialysis
Unit in Western Health, and
engaged as part-time nurse
at Melton Dialysis Unit.
I find my interaction and
relationship with patients
as the most fulfiling part
of my job. I get to attend to
their health needs, at the
same time provide spiritual
accompaniment by praying
with my patients upon their
request.
In 2010, I figured in a
near-fatal car accident in the
Philippines. My second lease
on life made me realise that
God has other plans for me,
and that he intends for me
to make a difference in the
lives of others. In 2011, I cofounded with a small group
of nurses the Melbourne
Nurses on Mission (MNM)
and became its President.
Our goal is to serve the
poorest of the poor in the
Philippines with medical
missions in rural areas in
the Philippines. We in MNM
conduct fundraising activities to support our cause.
As part of my mission of
serving others, I go home
every year to join our medical missions, and to attend
to my duties as President of
Hope of Melbourne Colleges
Foundation, a non-profit
school established to help
underprivileged youth in
Pangasinan.
My career as a nurse
Vilma Rullan-Lleva
I graduated my Bachelor of
Science in Nursing in Pines
City Educational Centre in
Baguio City, Philippines in
1994. I became a Psychiatric Nurse for just over six
months until I decided to
try my luck in the Middle
East. At 23, I was given the
opportunity to study and
have my training at no cost
as a Dialysis Nurse.
I took this as a stepping
stone in my profession. Being single and naïve, outspoken and motivated person, I
took every chance to pursue
my career.
From the Middle East, I
tried my luck to move to Europe and was given the opportunity to be an Anaemia
Coordinator at St. Vincent’s
Hospital in Donnybrook,
Dublin, Ireland.
When Australia opened
opportunities for nurses, I
was the last person in my
group to decide to move
Down Under.
I was offered the highest
level of Registered Nurse
Division 1 and months later
stepped up to a Clinical
Nurse Specialist Role in Renal and became an Associate
Nurse Unit Manager. With
experience and knowledge,
I managed to experience the
role of a Renal Transplant
Coordinator.
Married and with two
Vilma Lleva and family
kids, I worked my way to
become a successful Nurse
Unit Manager in one of the
prestigious hospitals in Melbourne, the Austin Health,
with the aim of practising
leadership within the nursing field to improve patient’s
experience and hand-inhand with my staff, to perform best practice in this
challenging role.

The government has reopened the Parent visa (subclass 103) and Aged Parent
visa (subclass 804). These
are permanent residence visas that allow the grantees to
work and study in Australia
and enroll in Medicare. They
can also apply for Australian
citizenship and sponsor
qualified relatives for permanent residence. They are
allowed to travel to and from
Australia for five years from
the date the visa is granted.
Applicants for these visas
must be outside Australia.
Those who are in Australia
can apply only if their temporary visas let them apply
for another visa while they
are in Australia. Applicants

when the visa is decided.
Parents can apply for
these visas provided that
they have a child who is an
Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or an eligible

What a grand way for Excelsis Choir to celebrate its
first anniversary at St Patrick’s Cathedral in East Melbourne last 14 November
2014 by holding a free concert to the public. Excelsis is
a Melbourne-based Catholic
choir which sings regularly
for liturgical events and
occasional concert performances. Martina Link (soprano) and Shanul Sharma
(tenor) also joined the group
in their performance.
The group sings for Sunday masses at Christ Our
Holy Redeemer in Oakleigh East, St Elizabeth’s
in Dandenong North, Holy

Filipino-produced short films win awards

TWO Filipino-made films
recently garnered awards in
their respective short film
festival competitions in
Melbourne.
MOTIVIOLENCE, produced by Tristan Manas,
won Best Editing in Melbourne’s 48 Hour Film Project 2014. Created under his
media banner, Project 628,
Motiviolence is a short film
thriller which follows the
efforts of a detective determined to catch a serial
killer haunting the streets
of Melbourne. In the wake
of several murders, he seeks
the assistance of a motivational speaker to unravel
the mystery behind the
perpetrator who leaves a
series of cryptic messages
with the dead victims.
The 48 Hour Film Project
is a uniquely demanding
undertaking for any filmmaker willing to tackle the
challenge. Tristan explains:
“Simply put, filmmaking
teams have just one weekend to make a short film.”
“Filmmakers do not know
what genre they will be
shooting until the start of
the competition. All cre-
ativity – writing, shooting,
editing and adding a musical soundtrack – must occur
within the 48-hour window,
beginning Friday evening at
7pm and ending Sunday at
7pm. To add to the mayhem,
they must also include some
random elements (a character, a prop and a dialogue) to
make sure the film is made
within that 48 hours.”
In this year’s competition, these elements were
a Motivational Speaker
(character), a ruler (prop)
and the line “A promise is a
promise” (dialogue).
Tristan has fashioned
a stylish tale that ties in
these elements effectively.
He has, in essence, made
a “silent” film in which no
dialogue is physically spoken by the film’s characters
but instead relying on their
actions and the film’s editing to craft an intriguing
tale within its almost eightminute run time.

way back home. An official
entry for the 2014 Sunshine
Short Film Festival, Botcha
was written by Jonathan
Sulte and directed by Edward Hernandez.
Producing this short film
was also no easy feat. Edward recalls how, after returning from an overseas
holiday, his filmmaking
team jumped at the chance
to create their movie.
“Unlike the other entrants
who had months to prepare,
we only had a weekend of
preparation. Jonathan wrote
the script on a Friday night.
On Saturday morning, we
started asking friends who
would be able to act, and
on Sunday afternoon, we
started filming. I only had
one day for editing to meet
the submission deadline –
sleepless for about 24 hours
straight but it was worth it.”
Meaning “double dead”,
Botcha plays on the definition of its title in alluding
to the origin and ultimate
fate of the film’s protagonist. At a run time of just
over five minutes, it’s an
astute piece of story-telling
and one that the short film
festival judges appreciated.
The film won in the Open
Category and The Judge’s
Prize for Best Film.

LOVE is a beautiful feeling.
And that’s what you take
away from a Side A concert.
As timeless as their love
songs, the five-man band
made Melbourne the last
leg of their Australia tour
and showed their fans that
they are on top of their game
with their trademark music,
impeccable performance
and superior artistry. Formed
in 1985, Side A has proven
over the years that in terms
of commercial success, no
other pop band comes close.
In fact, the years have only
made them look and sound
better – showing beyond
doubt that they are here to
stay.
Thanks to Clazzy Events,
men and women alike found
themselves swooning and
delighting in some of the
most beautiful love songs
ever heard from Philippine’s
version of Toto. Their twohour repertoire at Kingston
City Hall in Moorabbin filled
the night with popular music
from their multi-awarded
albums, some of which are
Hold On, Set You Free, Foolish Heart, Got to Believe in
Magic, Tell Me and So Many
Questions. The mesmerised
crowd sang and danced to
Side A’s music which was a
montage of love songs and
dance hits from the 70s to the
present. Everyone took the
roller coaster ride with the
band with much gusto, gushing at their love songs and
then busting happy dance
moves the next second.
The band that night must
have been a revelation to
some of their fans. Though
most have known vocalist Joey Generoso to be the
face of Side A, the band
chose to highlight all their
members - showcasing how
each is a talented musician
and singer. Lead guitarist
Leevon Cailao left hearts
aflutter with his version
of John Legend’s All of Me
while drummer Ernie Severino and keyboardist and
founder Naldy Gonzales not
only showed that they can
sing but that they are rightful pillars to the band along
with Joey Generoso whose
voice is just so magical.
Even bassist Ned Esuerra
had his opportunities on the
microphone. Halfway into
the show, you’d know that
Side A is the most talented
band in the Philippine music
industry.
If Side A was a fabulous
treat, so was Clazzy Events,
producer to the show. Their
people were so warm and
helpful that they were a
breath of fresh air. Side A
not only recognised them
but honoured onstage Gloria
Molina who was all praises
to the band for their professionalism and humility. She
expressed how happy she
was for having pulled off
their first major event and
thanked talents, sponsors
and staff. She commended
local talents Albert, Benjamin, Pauline, Julienne and
Alyssa who worked hard to
provide a fitting front act to
Side A.
The band capped the night
with their biggest hit, Forevermore that also served
as their encore. While there
is no question as to how
good they are, seeing Side
A perform live provided a
whole new perspective on
their music and talent. One
fan couldn’t believe how
great they were while some
couldn’t help but buy their
CDs even though the same
album is sitting in their
homes.
Fame is a fickle friend
but Side A has managed it
very well because they are
one of those very few artists
who respect their craft by
continuously excelling in it.
And because of that, Side A
has not only been winning
admiration but also respect
from fans who would always
and forevermore adore them
and their music.

A taste of Hotdog

Experiencing Croatian
Catholic Centre in Sunshine
West on 14 November was
like a journey back in time.
Nothing looked antiquated
or amiss. It’s just that the
crowd and the featured performers seemed to share an
intimate bond crafted during a special time in Philippine music history.
But that should not come
as a shock and horror especially when it’s the Hotdog
band you’re speaking of. The
legendary group catapulted
Manila sound in the 70s and
gave birth to hits which are
now considered as classics
in the industry.
Hotdog’s trip down under
proved to be an early Christmas treat to adoring fans
who came with their dancing
shoes on. It was a couple of
hours before those dancing shoes were put to good
use but everyone seemed to
relish the show. Fans didn’t
seem to mind that the band
updated its look by enlisting
a couple of youngblooded
musicians. They came with
one goal - and that was to
hear the hits that surely were
backdrops to milestones in
their lives.
When Hotdog took to the
stage and belted out Annie
Batungbakal, a different
kind of vibe suddenly enveloped the hall. There was
this beautiful and patient
excitement; not the kind
of rush you see when fans
storm out in wild abandon to
meet their favourite pop artists. I suddenly understood
what writers meant when
they described Hotdog’s
music as transcending socioeconomic classes and time. I
saw it happening that night
in that interesting collection
of people.
Some would say that there
was not enough Hotdog onstage as the gig only lasted
for more than an hour but
I guess no one went home
feeling that there was a
shortage of hits. Hotdog’s
repertoire featured Perslab,
Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal,
Panaginip, Ikaw ang Miss
Universe ng Buhay Ko, Ikaw
Pa Rin to name a few. They
even tossed in Guns n’ Roses’
Sweet Child of Mine and
Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing for good measure.
Excitement was at feverpitch high when the band
fired away dance hits such
as Manila, Awitin Mo at
Isasayaw Ko and Bongga Ka
Day. Fans even demanded an
encore and why would they
not, when the show was not
only a treat to some of OPM’s
greatest hits but also to a
wonderful era in Philippine
music history.
The Hotdog Band was
presented by Eventfullrise
Production. Front acts were
Alyssa Limbo, 3 Stars and
the Sun, Metrosound, Restless Crew, Kalapati, Deuterium, Rianna, and Our
Tribe. The show was hosted
by Mari Sosa Mendoza and

The Filipino Group Tennis
Club is a group of Filipinos
who love playing tennis and
play occasional competitions. Jun Ciar, one of the
members of the Club, said
that the group was originally formed 10 years ago
when one of their friends

support him they created the
tennis group as an outlet for
family and work pressures.
It started with only less
than 10 members and presently there are now 43 members. “We have occasional
competitions during long
weekends and we welcome
some sponsorship during
this time,” Ciar added. They

The Australian Open
Chess Festival that will be
held in Castle Hill, Sydney
on 2-11 January 2015 will be
a groundbreaking event. The
organisers attracted strong
overseas grandmasters from
Europe and Australia’s Asian
neighbours by offering the
biggest prize pool that was
unprecedented in Australian’s chess history. The
lure of winning the top prize
(A$ 8,000) did not escape
the attention of Filipino
chess players. Two of them,
Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa
from Taytay, Rizal and International Master Kim Steven
Yap from Cebu registered
early for the summer event.
Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa,
who won the very tough
Kolkata Open in India last
March, scored 7/10 at the
2012 Chess Olympiad with
an overall performance rating of 2668, which put him
in the super grandmaster
category.
The Filipino chess community in Victoria was able
to assist GM Oliver Barbosa
in a little way. If all things go
smoothly for Grandmaster
Oliver to ensure his participation at the Australian
Open Chess Championships,
then it is the plan of the
Filipino chess community
to invite GM Barbosa to conduct simultaneous chess exhibitions here in Melbourne.
The months of October
until January seem to create
a buzz around chess here
in Australia and around the
world. There were also milestones created that spurred
interests among chess aficionados. The recently concluded Millionaire Chess
Open which was held in Las
Vegas, U.S.A. last October
was the first tournament to
put a mark in terms of the
prize money given to the
winners.
Over 60 percent of players
went home with cash prizes,
but the heftiest amount was
given to a Filipino chess
prodigy by the name of
Wesley So. The 21-year old
grandmaster from Bacoor,
Cavite came on top from
among the 550 players after
five gruelling days of playing in matches. Another
Filipino grandmaster, Julio
Catalino Sadorra, earned
the distinction as the first
grandmaster that signed up
for the inaugural event. He
said that competing against
world-class players would
help him discover his chess
potential. He played board
one for the Philippines at
the Chess Olympiad held in
Tromso, Norway last August.
Grandmaster Julio Sadorra is
now the highest rated Filipino grandmaster as Wesley
So’s request for federation
transfer was recently granted, and he will be playing for
the United States in future
tournaments. Meanwhile, plans are ongoing to form a chess club
to promote chess at primary
schools in northern and
western suburbs and encourage Filipino chess players to
participate in informal and
regular chess matches and

by the Filipino Communities Council of Australia
(FILCCA), the peak national

Despite her flamboyant

taste in fashion, not to forget her 1,220 pairs of shoes,
former Philippine first lady
Imelda Marcos is still a big
mystery to many especially
to her fellow Filipinos in
Australia. It is therefore a
wonderful news to hear
that Filipino-Australians
will finally be able to watch
in Australia the much acclaimed musical play about
her, titled “Here Lies Love”.
The full Australian premiere
will be held at the city’s
Barangaroo development
in May 2015 as part of the
Sydney Vivid Festival.
“I’m old enough to remember she was a larger-than-life
figure. I’d heard she’d installed a mirror ball into one
floor of her New York townhouse, effectively turning it
into a disco. She used to go
out to a lot of dance clubs. I
thought, ‘I love music, but
this woman really has it going all the time’,” shares former Talking Heads frontman
David Byrne during a press
conference last 13 November
2014 in Sydney.
The formal announcement
of the award-winning New
York stage musical was made
by the New South Wales
Deputy Premier, Troy Grant
and David Byrne, co-founder
of Talking Heads and who
conceptualised and wrote
the lyrics to the musical.
Directed by Alex Timbers,
“Here Lies Love” retraces
the astonishing journey of
Imelda Marcos from her
meteoric rise to power to her
descent to infamy after the
People Power Revolution.
The Vivid performances
begin in Sydney on 7 May
at a makeshift 550-capacity
venue called the Millennium. The composer is hoping
his work will make it to other
parts of Australia. “I’m very
excited about the show being
here and I think Australians
are going to enjoy it,” said

Vedar reported the progress
of GK’s efforts in helping
those who have survived typhoon Haiyan, first anniversary of which was remembered on 8 November 2014.
In the report, GK outlined
its assistance in rebuilding
houses, setting up a feeding
program and the distribution
of balangay boats.
GK has so far built 684
houses and 1,357 are still on
schedule for building as of
31 October 2014. The beneficiaries of these houses were
three towns in Aklan; three,
Antique; six, Capiz; 11,
Cebu; three, Eastern Samar;
two, Iloilo; 25, Leyte; and
3, Negros Occidental. It has
also launched the “Kusina ng
Kalinga”, a feeding program
piloted in Alang-alang Leyte,
which now benefits 3,652
children. The goal is to open
10 more kitchens to reach
6,000 more kids by year-end,
and to serve 50,000 children
by 2015.
Fishermen in the community also received 797 balangay boats to restore their
livelihood. The goal is to give
out 700 more by June 2015.
Apart from sustained rebuilding of homes, GK will
strive to build human resource and productivity centres in five strategic locations
in areas hit by Haiyan to
provide sustained livelihood
programs. It will also employ
green technology and provide solar-powered lamps
to 3,500 households, public
schools and health centres.
At the core of its efforts is
the continued recruitment
of volunteers to help build
homes, refurbish schools
and organise communities
and create impact in the
lives of those GK helps.

In a few days, we will welcome 2015, a new beginning filled with optimism
and hope. My question to
you is “how did you make
2014 your best year ever?”
You may still have that list
you wrote earlier in the year
listing your goals and things
you will accomplish for
2014, did you achieve what
you set out to do? If you did,
you deserve a big congratulations and if you didn’t, the
question is why not?
I get it, life can body slam
you and trying to get up one
more time seems impossible and it’s easier to give
up. Sometimes the thought
of getting slammed again
cripples you from achieving
your success. What you need
to do is to step up and step
out with faith, knowing that
you will overcome and reach
your destination.
This coming year, I challenge you to follow three
things that can change your
life for the better and also
shape your destiny. The first

the state. Pay attention to the
important things in your life:
health, wealth, relationship. If you don’t, one
day you will wake up
and realise that disaster is staring you in

Thirdly, “Be Humble.” Everyone is
awesome in their
own unique way.
Don’t be seduced into
thinking you are a legend in your own lunch
box. The truth is someone
is smarter, richer, skinnier,
more popular, and better
looking than you. So celebrate that and just accept
it; I don’t mean to put you
down and deflate your ego,
one is “Master the basics.”
No matter what you do or
industry you are in, make
the decision to master the
basics. Doing so will pay off
tremendously. Do not get
bored with the basics
and do not settle for
“good enough.” The
late publisher Malcolm Forbes said
that “good enough,
seldom is” break
away from mediocrity, strive for
excellence in everything you do.
Mastering the basic can lead to excellence.

Manila, where incumbent
Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr, was in the
same year as he was.
Consul Pintado also expressed his desire to catch
up on his “Tagalog” as well
as Visayan dialect skills and
to get to know the various
Filipino-Australian community organisations in
Victoria, even as he laments
the lack of consolidated
database of these organisations. ACME Chairperson
Fred Jover volunteered the
ACME website for a list of
various small businesses
owned/operated by Filipinos
in Melbourne.
A need for an aged care
facility
The urgent need of the Filipino community for an
aged care facility was also
discussed. The community
has the highest proportion
of elderly family members
compared to other multicultural communities in
Victoria. The discussion
eventually focused on the
needs of an aged-care facility
dedicated to Filipino elderlies as research shows that
persons born overseas where
culture and first language is
not English, will eventually
revert mentally and linguistically to their birth culture
and language.
