Kalbarri
Kalbarri is a picturesque seaside town located 590km north of
Perth, midway along Australia’s Coral Coast.
Kalbarri National Park
Kalbarri National Park covers an area of 186,000
hectares, the rugged terrain and relative seclusion
of the park attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The experienced hiker to the simple holiday maker
are catered for with access to 14 different sites
throughout the area.
The town itself is located at the mouth of the Murchison River,
an ideal playground for families to relax, swim, fish and
snorkel in the clear, blue waters.
Surrounded by National Park, Kalbarri offers dramatic inland
gorges, magnificent coastal scenery and a variety of wildlife
and wildflowers.
The township of Kalbarri is encircled by two distinctly different
landscapes. East of town are inland river gorges with rock
formations as old as 400 million years, the south features towering
ocean cliffs plummeting to the waves below.
Humpback whales grace our coastline seasonally and
adventure tours suitable for all types of visitors are on offer,
making Kalbarri the perfect holiday choice.
Kalbarri Visitor Centre is the first place to
visit when you arrive. Located in the main
street of town, here you can book tours,
accommodation and coach transport
with our friendly staff, plus find all the
local information on sightseeing, walk
trails and what to see and do in the area.
The population
in Kalbarri is
under 2,000
but can swell
to 7,500 in
peak season

The roads to the coastal sites are sealed and suitable for all
vehicles, except for Pot Alley which is not suitable for caravans or
motorhomes. The roads into the inland gorge sites at Hawk’s Head
and Ross Graham are also sealed, and there are shade shelters,
toilets and picnic facilities. The first 12km of the road to the Z-Bend
and Loop area is sealed with the remaining 19km unsealed and
accessible to most traffic including two-wheel drives.
We recommend to check with the visitor centre for current road
conditions as heavy rainfall can close this road.

Interpretive signage located along this
path reveals the intriguing history of the
area. At Pederick Lookout see sandy
beaches below and striking Zuytdorp
Cliffs to the north. Continue further to
Red Bluff to Beach Trail (below).
Pot Alley
Pot Alley was named by local
cray fishermen after losing many
pots to this hazardous cove. The
view south from the cliff top truly
captures the rugged beauty of
this coastline. Take the winding,
rocky walk down to the
beautiful beach. Great to
explore, however swimming is
not recommended.

Class 3, 8km one-way, 16km return
Bigurda is Nanda for a small
kangaroo also known as the
euro. Connecting Eagle Gorge
to Natural Bridge, this sandy trail
provides stunning coastal views
with great photo opportunities.
This unique walk offers a vast
array of wildflower species from
winter through to the end of
spring. Dolphin pods are a
common sight as well as
humpback whales. Some parts
have uneven surfaces with
loose stones, hugs the coastline
and is close to the clifftop –
watch your step.

This loop trail takes you on a
contrasting journey of discovery.
Informative signage along the path
takes you back 400 million years to
a time when Australia was known
as Gondwanaland and marine life
ruled the planet. See a range of
rock formations from worm tubes to
round boulders and banded
colours of sandstone layers. At
dawn or dusk witness kangaroos
feeding amidst the coastal heath
and rocky outcrops, the ocean
never being far from sight.

As you take in views from the
Eagle Gorge lookout, watch for
seasonal whales and seabirds
while listening to the pound of
the waves below. For anyone
seeking a little extra, take the
stepped rocky path to discover
a secluded beach that’s well
worth the effort.

The Murchison River starts its journey
in the range lands near
Meekatharra, travelling across dry
plains, hills, salt lakes and gorges
with many tributaries forming this
massive catchment area. Heavy
rainfall from the movement of
decaying tropical cyclones can
often result in floodwaters reaching
Kalbarri up to three weeks later. In
extreme flood events, muddy brown
water can be seen emptying into
the ocean creating a stark contrast
between blue water and brown.
Predatory fish lay in wait for the river
inhabitants to be flushed out for a
feast. These floodwaters carry an
amazing array of nutrients that
nourishes and restores the river
system; within a month the river is
teeming with life again.

Blue Holes
Blue Holes is part of an inshore limestone reef
system, with some sections permanently
submerged and other exposed – giving the
‘Blue Holes’ stretch of coast its name.
Declared as a Fish Habitat Protection Area
(FHPA) in 2007, it is home to more than 70 species of finfish. Some fish to
look for include dart, moon wrasse, raccoon butterfly fish, humbugs and
western rock lobster. There are as many as 10 types of sponge, 11 species of
coral, crustaceans such as banded hair shrimp and beds of oysters. Blue Holes
offers a range of recreational activities including swimming and snorkelling.
All marine life is protected and no fishing activities permitted also no shells are to be taken
off the beach. Recreational boating and the use of jet skis in the FHPA is prohibited.
Whale Watching
Approximately 22,000 of
the world’s Humpback
whale population pass
the Kalbarri coast line
between June to
November on their annual
migration. The Humpback
whale undertakes a
northern journey from
May to August, from their
feeding grounds in
Antarctica to breeding
grounds as far as Camden
sound. They return the
following year to give birth
in the same waters, then
travel south from August
to November close to
Kalbarri’s shoreline
sheltering their young.
At birth, calves are
approximately 4 – 5 m in
length and weigh
approximately 2 tonnes.
Mothers produce nearly
240 litres of milk for their
calves each day.

classed as a Competition
Standard Park. The bowl is
the second biggest in WA
with landscaping and
shade shelters for
everyone’s enjoyment. It is
recommended that you
wear protective gear at
the park and all children
are supervised.
Pelican Feeding
Pelicans are recorded as having
the longest bill of any living bird,
each morning at 8.45am join our
volunteers who feed these
beautiful waterbirds.
Surfing
Kalbarri is home to the iconic
lefthander called Jakes Point,
recognised as a National Surfing
Reserve, one of the state’s most
famous remote surfing breaks.
Jakes is one of those unique
waves that is mastered best by the
local surfers. Like most reefs, Jakes
breaks from two foot and up and
is recommended for experienced
surfers only. Jakes Bay offers a
safer option for the novice while
fostering a protective environment
for our next generation of talent.
Kalbarri has a very strong
community where locals take their
surfing and the protection of the
environment seriously.

Dolphins
We see two types of dolphins in our waters, the common dolphin seen from
cliff tops and close to shore, the yellowish pattern on the sides make them
easy to identify. Bottlenose dolphins are also common, seen frequently while
fishing or boating offshore and have a short rounded snout, described as
bottle-shaped. A dolphin’s life can span up to 45 years.

Pink Lake
Hutt Lagoon was given its name by explorer George Grey who camped on
its edge in 1839. The pink hue is due to the presence of the carotenoid
producing algae, Dunaliella Salina, a source of Beta-carotene, a foodcolouring agent and source of vitamin A. The lagoon contains the world’s
largest microalgae production plant and a commercial supply of Artemia
parthenogenetica brine shrimp. Artemia is a specialty feed used by prawn
and fish farmers and the aquarium fish trade.

The town of Gregory lies south of Kalbarri near the mouth of

it was not suitable for large vessels. Port Gregory was once
bombarded by a submarine during WWII. Further down the

Our Environment
Fauna
The Department of Parks and Wildlife are working tirelessly to reintroduce
native animals such as the chuditch, tamar wallaby and woylie to our
national park. Some of the most common animals you will encounter are
western grey and euro kangaroos, emus, short beaked echidnas, shingle
back and ta-ta lizards. Another lizard is the thorny devil, a small
fascinating reptile that feeds exclusively on black ants with an amazing
ability to absorb water through its skin like a straw.
Podolepis
Flora
One mention of wildflowers and
many people will think of Kalbarri –
over 800 species with many unique
to the area. Starting at the end of
June through to October, travellers
make their way here from all over
the world to witness the
transformation. The coastal areas of
the national park boast plants such
as Murchison rose which can only
be found here in Kalbarri. Make
your way inland and the sand plains
become carpets of pink and white
everlastings and orange
immortelles, jostling for space
between starflowers, kangaroo
paws, featherflowers and orchids, to
name a just a few. One of the last
flowers to emerge is the aptly
named smelly socks. With the
flowers on the end of long stalks
and low grevillia shrubbery, these
beautiful flowers attract many
insects and release a sickly sweet
smell at dusk and into the evening.
At the northern entrance of the
national park visitors will notice pine
trees along the roadside, these
sandplain cypress are native to the
area. Kalbarri Visitor Centre keeps
up to date with what’s flowering
where, pop in to see the friendly
staff for a wildflower update.
18
Birds
Kalbarri has an abundant bird population with as many as 170
species. Along the coast you will encounter sea-eagles and osprey
and the ever popular pelicans and sand pipers. If out at sea you
may be lucky enough to catch the flight of a yellow-nose albatross.
Wedge-tailed eagles and kestrels are often spied patrolling the
deep gorges, while fairy martins and swallows nest in the cliff faces.
The lower reaches of the Murchison River is home to an amazing
array of birdlife with the red-tailed cockatoos, carnaby’s black
cockatoos, egrets, kites, wood ducks and black swans. In the town
site, flocks of pink and grey galahs, ringneck parrots, mudlarks and
cuckoo shrikes can often be seen in the trees and grassed foreshore.
Histo
ry
Indigenous Culture
Nanda are the salt water people. Keepers of the land and sea, they have
a spiritual connection to the land and Mother Earth. Aboriginal people
known as the Nanda inhabited an area including Kalbarri, west to Willigulli
and mouth of the Bowes River, East to Northampton and North to Tamala.
These Aboriginal people believe a mythological Dreamtime being
sculptured the land to what we see today. Long ago during the spiritual
Dreamtime, a serpent called Beemarra travelled down the Murchison
River, drawn by the unfamiliar sound of the pounding waves. The
Beemarra followed a creek and then disappeared underground to tunnel
her way to the coast. Emerging at Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs, Beemarra was
terrified by the thundering waves and fled back to the safety of the
Murchison River. As she fled her passage was marked by a tunnel through
an outcrop of red sandstone. She rested in many places leaving fresh
water where she had lain. These fresh water springs are still in existence
today and are registered sites with the Department of Indigenous Affairs.
209 Aboriginal heritage sites are also registered in this area.

Shipwrecks

The remote and windswept coastline of Kalbarri has been the tragic
setting of many shipwrecks over time. A more famous shipwreck was
Batavia, from the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Built in Amsterdam
1628 and armed with 24 cast-iron cannons. Shipwrecked on 4th June
1629 on her maiden voyage, she struck Morning Reef, part of the
Abrolhos Islands group, made famous by the mutiny and massacre that
took place among the survivors. Commander Pelsaert left survivors on the
island to make the miraculous journey to Java in a tiny long boat for help.
The crew plotted mutiny while Wiebbe Hayes and his followers held the
mutineers at bay until Pelsaert returned. Some of the mutineers were
sentence to death, some taken home for sentencing and two cast
ashore at Kalbarri, believed to be at the site of Wittecarra Creek.
Interpretive signage at this site informs visitors.
In 1712, the Zuytdorp, also a VOC Company vessel was wrecked against
limestone cliffs between Kalbarri and Steep Point, while voyaging to
Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia). It carried a rich cargo of 248,000 freshly
minted silver coins along with 200 passengers. Hundreds of coins have
been recovered from the famous ‘carpet of silver’ in and around the
wreck. The precise circumstances of the wreck remain a mystery,
because no survivors reached Batavia to tell the tale. Some did live for a
time in Shark Bay, where they were helped by local Aboriginal people.
The Fishing Industry
Commercial fishing boats
have more than halved in
recent years due to fishing
regulations and a change in
climate. WA has outstanding
fish management systems in
place to ensure fisheries are
sustainable. Fresh lobster
catches are unloaded directly
from the vessel and
transported to Geraldton for
processing and not available
for sale from the boats. Fresh
fish and lobster are featured
on the local menus and can
be purchased from a few
outlets in town. Fresh fish can
be purchased directly from
the boats at the wharf when
available.
