Fairborn is a unique community diverse in population with a City government dedicated to guiding the
city into the future. During the past several years, the Fairborn Chamber has consistently strived to be

Located with four interchanges on I-675, Fairborn is the center of growth for the Dayton region
now and for years to come. The City of Fairborn offers many amenities including 18 parks, wetland
reserves and a classically structured downtown area. A family oriented community, Fairborn is
home to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, one of the largest Air Force bases in the world as
well as Wright State University, which serves nearly 18,000 students with programs leading
to more than 100 undergraduate and nearly fifty Ph.D., graduate and professional degrees.
The community also offers quality education to its residents through the Fairborn City
School system and its outstanding teachers and staff. Our collaboration with the Air
Force Base, Wright State University, City Government and an incredibly diverse mix

Historical highlights
Fairborn is believed to be the only city in
the world with its name. | Fairfield, one of the villages that
merged to form Fairborn, was one of the few towns in the nation
to lay out its streets due north and south and due east and
west. | The first log house in our community, the Mercer-Smith
House built in 1799, still stands at the southwest corner of

our community values for generations
to come and laid the foundation for
Fairborn’s ultimate success.
In 1799, the first English settlers
arrived and eventually the village
of Fairfield was formed. By the early
1800s, Fairfield had become a pivotal
stop for stage coaches traveling
between Dayton and Springfield.
With the advent of the railroad in
the mid-1800s, new towns began
to spring up. One of them was the
Village of Osborn. It grew rapidly due
to its proximity to the railway line.
During this time, Fairfield’s growth
slowed but, by the turn of the century,
another form of transportation—the
airplane—helped to spark its rebirth.
The Fairfield Intermediate Air Depot
played a crucial role in supply and air
training during the first World War.
Coincidentally, the Wright Brothers
performed many flight tests and had
established the Wilbur Wright Flying
Field on nearby Huffman Prairie.

After the devastating 1913 flood in
Dayton, plans began for construction
of the Huffman Dam across the Mad
River, which would back its waters
into the village of Osborn. On land
now considered a flood plain, Osborn’s
future was in jeopardy. So, in 1921, the
industrious villagers took matters into
their own hands and literally moved the
village to land that bordered Fairfield.
Everything was moved. Nothing was
left except the basements. Buildings were
set on new foundations and Osborn
became a twin village to Fairfield.
Fairfield and Osborn operated
independently until residents voted
to merge their communities and
their names. In 1950, the new village
of Fairborn was officially created.
Later that year, when the population
reached 5,000, Fairborn became a city.
Since then, Fairborn’s population has
blossomed to more than 32,000 and it
continues to grow and thrive.
Working together with the spirit of
innovation and a shared community
vision that benefits our citizens is
a trait we inherited from our rich
history. Our ability to look ahead,
yet preserve the best aspects of our
past, sets Fairborn apart from other
communities. And we continue to
blaze new trails as we reach forward to
a bright future and a limitless horizon.

region. Our close proximity to WrightPatterson Air Force Base has resulted

procedures, technology and products

If it is activity you desire, our parks offer
a state-of-the-art skate park, softball
fields, baseball diamonds, soccer fields,
and basketball, tennis and volleyball
courts to meet your family’s needs. The
Fairborn parks are also home to three
nature reserves, a historic log home and
homestead, two performing arts pavilions,
and a 4.3 mile bikeway that is also ideal
for in-line skating or even cross-country
skiing when the weather is appropriate.
With three public golf courses and four
private courses in Greene County and
two golf courses on Wright-Patterson
Air Force Base, golf enthusiasts have
many options. And, if you have the
stamina, the U.S. Air Force hosts a
marathon each fall that attracts nearly
10,000 runners from all over the world.
The Fairborn Parks and Recreation
Division works hard to offer fun,
entertaining and rewarding recreational
programs for all ages. A variety of sports
and activity camps are offered throughout
the summer in our park system such as
tennis camp, youth fitness and nutrition
camp, and softball, volleyball and soccer
camps. Cultural half-day camps are
also offered covering an array of topics
such as sand and clay art, scrapbooking
and a fun-filled aqua day. Adult tennis
and softball leagues are also popular.
The city offers clean and safe playgrounds
as well as 15 picnic shelters throughout
the park system that can be reserved for
family gatherings, company functions or
church events. The Parks and Recreation
staff plans and coordinates many special
community events each year for the
whole family to enjoy, from outdoor
music concerts to holiday festivals. So

As I write this letter in 2010, Fairborn is celebrating its 60 th anniversary. We are the city of tradition and
innovation. Our tradition has been shaped by our historical past—from the Shawnees to our English
settlers to our stagecoach and railroad days to the invention of the airplane. Our innovation centers
primarily around the Wright Brothers and the spin-offs of the aviation industry including the evolution
from the Fairfield Air Depot to the establishment of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Our city has
become the innovation home of industries and high tech associated with wind energy, biomedical
research and advanced performance systems.

largest and oldest military
aviation museum and Ohio’s

Wright Flyer, the Stealth
Fighter and John F. Kennedy’s
Air Force One. You can also
experience the thrills of the
IMAX Theatre that puts you
at the center of the action.
The National Aviation Hall of
Fame, also located here, was
established to honor those
who have made significant
contributions to the history
of aviation.
This 84-acre pasture, a national
historic landmark, is where
the Wright Brothers put their
dreams into action developing
a fully controllable airplane
and training themselves and
others to be pilots. The field
looks just as it did when the
Wright Brothers flew here. The
associated Interpretive Center
is part of the Dayton Aviation
Heritage National Historic
Park. It features exhibits on
the Wrights’ activities at the
flying field and their continuing
legacy at Wright-Patterson
Air Force Base.
Travel this 12-foot wide
urban trail linking downtown
Fairborn with the Wright
Brothers Memorial and
Wright State University. It
also extends to Huffman
Prairie Flying Field and the
Huffman Reserve. Over four
miles in length, it is part of
the statewide Buckeye Trail.

Silurian age – a time more
than 425 million years ago
when the area was covered

sanctuary of green space,

Creek Wetlands ecosystem

Ohio is that it is the home of Wright
Patterson Air Force Base. WrightPatterson is one of the largest and
most important bases in the Air Force
and home to National Museum of the
United States Air Force. Wright-Patt is
steeped in aeronautical history with
roots dating back before World War I.
From 1904-1905, brothers Orville and
Wilbur Wright’s use of the 84-acres of
land called Huffman Prairie Flying
Field carved its place in history with
their experimental test flights.

The place where many “firsts” in
aviation history took place, WrightPatterson adds a culturally historical
element to the city of Fairborn. Dayton
banker, Torrence Huffman allowed the
Wright brothers to practice flying on
his land as long as their experiments
didn’t disturb the cows and horses.
During that first year they practiced
making turns and circles with their
flying machine. In their 1905 Flyer they
learned to bank and turn. Huffman
Prairie Flying Field was designated as
a National Historic Landmark in 1990.
In 1917, the United States entered World
War I, and three military installations
were established in the Dayton area—
Wilbur Wright Field, Fairfield Aviation
General Supply Depot, and McCook
Field. From 1925 through 1927 newer
and more modern facilities were built
on the area of Wright Field west of the
Huffman Dam to accommodate the
functions relocated from McCook Field.

and other defense and non-defense
activities. It is also the home of the
Air Force Materiel Command, the
Aeronautical Systems Center, the Air
Force Research Laboratory, the Air

Air Force Institute of Technology, the
National Air and Space Intelligence
Center, the 445th Airlift Wing, a
regional Department of Defense
medical center and other Air Force,
DoD and government agencies. The
88th Air Base Wing, as the host,
operates, maintains and defends the
base with more than 6,000 active
military members.

A few years after the official dedication
ceremony, naming Wright Field in
1927, the local community decided to
honor the Patterson family for their
leadership within the community.
They helped keep Wilbur Wright Field
and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field
afloat by raising $425,000 in two days
and purchasing 4,520.47 of the two
fields, ensuring the engineering hub
would remain in Dayton.

With the bed-down of new Base
Realignment and Closure missions,
Wright-Patterson will continue to
provide an “economic engine” to
Fairborn and surrounding communities
as it presses on with the largest Military
Construction project since World War
II. The base anticipates adding 1200
new Combat Airmen to its team. That
means the base will be aggressively
hiring new interns and reaching out
to the community with information
on how they can become part of our
Air Force family.
Wright-Patterson prides itself in its
spirit of community with Fairborn
and the surrounding areas and
continues to seek ways to bolster its
relationship within and outside of its
gates. In September, Wright-Patt hosts
its Annual Air Force Marathon and
over 10,000 military and civilian
runners participate from the United
States and overseas. The community
also makes the annual AFMC Tattoo
a huge success with an annual average
attendance estimated at 75,000. The base
and local communities come out for a
night of free entertainment, flyovers and
fireworks on the grounds of the National
Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
The base also hosts the FIRST Lego
competitions through the Educational
Outreach Office, which is a multidisciplinary program that combines
engineering, computer programming,
problem-solving, researching, presenting
and teamwork into an intense 8-week
period. The competition brings in teams
from across the U.S., and it is held at
the Ervin J. Nutter Center in Dayton.
The program has sponsors from the
local area from military contractors to
individuals from the community who
support the teams from schools in the
local and regional areas.

event. It never fails that if the base is
honoring a fallen military member or
welcoming home an injured airman,
the surrounding communities come
out to show their support.
