Innovative and responsible business go hand in hand at Mistral Businesses do not work in a vacuum. The time where they could close their eyes to social and ecological themes has been over for quite some time. Producing and turning a profit should and can be done, but it should be done ethically. This is why more and more brands and entrepreneurs are searching for worthy projects where they can express their social involvement. Mistral is no exception and already has quite a long history doing so. In the past, Mistral supported an orphanage in Bulgaria and helped alleviate their material needs on location by donating bed linen. Also, the profit from Mistral’s 10th year anniversary party was donated to ‘de Kromme Boom’, an organisation that mainly helps house and council alcohol and drug addicts. The latest project, Designers Against Aids (DAA), is something that went hand-in-glove with the Mistral corporate philosophy. While we sleep and dream comfortably, many people are still dying of AIDS. Since the HIV threat should absolutely not become a ‘not in my backyard’ affair, quilt covers for people who do not have sweet dreams were a good idea. Mistral was charmed by a previous collaboration between H&M and DAA and contacted the organisation to suggest their own contribution. To provide more notoriety to the project, artists such as Kate Ryan and Vive la Fête were called upon. Together with other creative minds and designers they elaborated a number of designs to adorn the Mistral quilt covers. The Mistral designers translated these ideas and designs into prints. Organic cotton was used for the quilt covers as well as environmentally friendly colourings and printing techniques. This modern, fresh collection is well on its way to becoming a strong commercial success. And the more quilt covers are sold, the more money will be raised for the fight against AIDS. 3 Who is DAA ? DAA w w w . designersa ga insta i ds . co m Designers Against Aids (DAA) is a project of non-profit organisation Beauty without Irony that was founded in 2004 to raise HIV/AIDS awareness in the international media and towards the general public, more specifically towards young people in the industrialised countries. DAA does this by asking famous and emerging fashion designers, musicians, artists and other celebrities to create designs that can be printed on items such as t-shirts, sweaters, underwear, beachwear, condom boxes, ringbinders, etc and DAA also takes part in collaborations, most recently with H&M in ‘Fashion against AIDS’ that was sold in 27 countries worldwide. The DAA fashion collections are made of organic cotton in a Fair Trade community in India with the help of German company Sense Organics. You can find more information about DAA, planned events and points of sale on www.designersagainstaids.com Through links on the website you can find more information about AIDS/ HIV. Later records such as Republique Populaire (2001) and Nuit Blanche ( 2003) made them popular, especially in the fashion world where Karl Lagerfeld is one of their fans. In 2005 they released the album Grand Prix and they toured all over Europe. They also played some shows in Brazil and Mexico. 17 Vive La Fête 18 Vive La Fête 19 mari otberg - fashion Mari Otberg or justMariot has a strong passion for both art and fashion. In 1998 she launches her own label “justMariot” and 3 years later she presents her first fashion collection called “Pearl in a Battlefield” – a huge success. After London she moves to Berlin where she opens her first fashion shop – a little princess’ castle with her special designs for musicians, artists and business women. After her collection called “I want to be…Sanssouci” she started concentrating more on her artwork and she also started with a made to measure bridal service. 20 Mari Otberg 21 Mari Otberg 22 PERCY IRAUSQUIN - fashion designer Fashion designer Percy Irausquin (Aruba, 1969) has created this design for the first DAA bed linen collection. After finishing school, Percy moved to the Netherlands, where he attended the famous Rietveld Art Academy and the equally prestigious FIA master of fashion design course in Arnhem. He then moved to Paris, where he worked for the likes of corset maker Hubert Barrere en Christian Lacroix. From 2004, his own commercial collections followed suit, all featuring his strong, spectacular and above all feminine trademark style. He soon became the darling of press and celebrities alike. Percy was set to become a big household name. But sadly, he passed away in August 2008, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. He was only 39 years old. This design is testimony to his creativity and largely unfulfilled ambitions. 23 Percy Irausquin 24 Percy Irausquin 25 Percy Irausquin 26 hemingway design - designers In 1999, Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway set up HemingwayDesign, which specializes in affordable and social design. In 2005 he started the Bas Kosters Studio to house al his fashion related activities. Besides designing clothes he paints, illustrates, makes objects, installations, music, dolls and does performances. The dolls play a big part in the work of Bas Kosters Studio and his opulent use of colours, intensive embroidery and his signature prints make his work very recognizable. Wannyn 43 Johann P. Wannyn 44 Johann P. Wannyn 45 Ninette murk - fashion editor/director and consultant After working for over a decade as fashion editor/director and consultant, Ninette Murk earned three things: a reputation for having a keen instinct when it comes to discovering new creative talent, the respect of designers, the fashion industry and the public alike and last but not least: a true sense of objectivity. That she was never lured into some fashion clan testifies to that. Continuing to adhere to her principles of independence, creativity and beauty, she started MintRed PR, which promoted talent from Flanders and Brussels and represents some talented designers, photographers and artists. In between acts, she found the time to think up and start the international artists’ movement Beauty without Irony -of which she is also artistic director- and founded and directs its offshoot Designers Against Aids (www.designersagainstaids.com), for which she designed this bedcover. 46 Ninette Murk 47 Ninette Murk 48 Javier Barcala - writer/art director Brussels-based freelance writer and art director Javier Barcala has been a regular contributor to lifestyle and avant-garde media for about a decade. The release of a fashion photo-book (December ‘09) and a number of productions next spring under the name of ‘La Fortuna’. 49 Javier Barcala 50 Javier Barcala 51 M@M<C8=ÜK<=i\eZ_]fiCfe^c`m\k_\gXikp `jXe\c\Zkifgfg^iflg#]fle[\[`e(00.`e>_\ek9\c^`ld %K_\ Zfi\f]k_\YXe[`j]fid\[Ypcfm\ij;XeepDfdd\ej^l`kXiXe[mfZXcj Xe[<cjGpeffmfZXcj % K_\`iÔijkjlZZ\jjZXd\n`k_k_\`i[\Ylk8kkXhl\Jligi`j\)''' %CXk\ii\Zfi[jjlZ_XjI\glYc`hl\GfglcX`i\ )''( Xe[El`k9cXeZ_\)''* dX[\k_\dgfglcXi#\jg\Z`Xccp`ek_\]Xj_`fenfic[#n_\i\BXicCX^\i]\c[`j fe\f]k_\`i]Xej%@e)'',k_\pi\c\Xj\[>iXe[Gi`oXe[kfli\[Xccfm\i<lifg\Xe[gcXp\[jfd\j_fnj`e 9iXq`cXe[D\o`Zf% :f\e;XX[ IfY\ik9ffe ?\d`e^nXp;\j`^e G\iZ\p@iXljhl`e Af_XeeG%NXeepe nnn%d`jkiXc%Y\ (''fi^Xe`jZ_bXkf\e@ Zfkfe@Zfkkfe@Xc^f[e @Zfkfe\@Xc^f[f 8QF]i\\ exclusive drawings made by M`m\cX=k\ DXi`FkY\i^ G\iZp@iXljhl`e ?\d`e^nXp;\j`^e J_Xg\JhlX[ 9XjBfjk\ij IfY\ik9ffe :f\e;XX[ Af_XeeG%NXeepe 9XjBfjk\ij J_Xg\JhlX[ DXi`FkY\i^ M`m\cX=k\ exclusive drawing made by M`m\cX=k\ Dekbedovertrek + sloop I slopen Housse de couette + taie I taies Quilt cover + pillowcase I pillowcases Funda nórdica + funda de almohada I fundas de almohada Copripiumino + federa I federe Capa de edredon + fronha I fronhas DAA =FI www. de s ig n e rs a g a in s t a ids . c o m D@JKI8C?FD<K<OK@C<JXe[;<J@>E<IJ8>8@EJK8@;JXi\af`e`e^]fiZ\j`ek_\YXkkc\X^X`ejk8@;JXe[Xi\cXleZ_`e^XY\[c`e\eZfcc\Zk`fen`k_ K_\:Xi[`^Xej#M`m\cX=k\Xe[fk_\in\cc$befne[\j`^e\ij#dlj`Z`XejXe[Xik`jkj%K_\^fXc`jkfjgi\X[XnXi\e\jjXYflk?@M&8@;Jn_`Z_X]]\ZkjdXep g\fgc\Xccfm\ik_\nfic[%K_\Zfcc\Zk`feÈ?fd\K\ok`c\j8^X`ejk8@;JÉ`jXmX`cXYc\`e¿efn%K_\Xik`jkjgXik`Z`gXk\]i\\f]Z_Xi^\Xe[¿f]k_\jXc\j mXcl\]ifdk_\Zfcc\Zk`fen`cc^fkf?@M&8@;J$gi\m\ek`fegifa\ZkjXccXifle[k_\nfic[% K_\Xik`jkjkXb`e^gXik`eÈ?fd\K\ok`c\j8^X`ejk8@;JÉXi\K_\:Xi[`^Xej#M`m\cX=k\#DXi`FkY\i^#G\iZp@iXljhl`e#?\d`e^nXp;\j`^e#J_Xg\JhlX[# 9XjBfjk\ij#IfY\ik9ffe#:f\e\eAf_XeeG%NXeepe% Packaging Graphic Design by Johanna De Nocker 52 Mistral home textiles NV CONCEPT SA I.Z.
