Pepper Pete This precious old soul, who lived on the miller's wires for 10 to 14 years of his life and came to us blind and deaf with the #40 tattooed in his ear, as his only identification before rescue, has fought a very long and valiant battle to stay and enjoy his newfound freedom ... but, despite extraordinary vet care, the Paws 'N' Hands NBSTR Program, and more love than he is ever known, his heart and lungs are giving out on him ... For all of the Hell Pepper Pete's life represented to him before that day in July 2005, when authorities raided his puppy miller and confiscated all 80 dogs, Pepper Pete has been, since coming to us (4/07), the very gentlest and loving of souls, always so grateful for his new life and new found freedom. He has never been able to hear or see us, but he knows us by the hands of love. We were told last September that he only had 612 months to live. We have shared love with him a day at a time, and for awhile, this brave warrior did well. You may recall that 6 weeks ago, we nearly lost him in the vet's office and were certain it was only a matter of days. But Pepper Pete had other plans. He wasn't ready to go ... Pepper Pete is a part of the New Beginnings family, and it is only right that I share this time with you now... loving them enough to let go at the appropriate time for them, is the most difficult walk of rescue. And, as the circle of life goes on ... we welcome new babies ... Sharon H - NBSTR - (OH) Even though he has been with you only a short time, you gave him extraordinary love and care He has a name, he is no longer a number, a piece of property, you gave him some dignity. I know when he crosses the bridge, our Robin will there to meet him and welcome him to God's home. When he gets to see God, he will tell him how although he could not see or hear, his last human gave him so much love that he was free of his previous torments. I also think he will ask God to give you love and peace to heal your heart and to know you are blessed because of the work you do. Take care and know our hearts are heavy and we will grieve along with you. ~ Nick Welcome Home: Placing a pet in a wonderful, adoptive home or helping at your shelter is the happiest moment in rescue, even if it doesn't feel like it at the moment. You helped to make a perfect love story, and you get to move on to help yet another. This is why we do rescue. The circle completed. ~ Lavina Carol & Tom’s Joey, Char’s Caleb, Chris’s Honey (also known as Minnie Mouse), Jan’s Sadie, JudyP’s Athena, JulieH’s Maggie Mae, LindaT’s Ziggy, Nick’s Mr. Bear (adopted by our own Mary Ling!) Rita’s Bandy, and SueC’s Teddy all found their forever homes this holiday weekend. ~ Bekye Spencer was adopted. ~ Heidi, Laura, DebbyC Maggie Mae Wooddell has a new family. They live in a BEAUTIFUL home with an absolutely gorgeous yard for Maggie. Jon & Rebecca are both teachers. Rebecca is also a master gardener. They both fell in love with Maggie Mae and vice versa. She will definitely be well cared for and most importantly loved. I couldn't have picked a more perfect home for her if I tried. She will have two Shih Tzu sisters also; Cookie (8 yrs old) and Muffin (10 yrs old). ~ JulieH CJ (Bennet) - will be adopted June 7th by Susan Marcott. ~ LisaH Peaches now renamed Bailey is in her new forever home with the Phair family. They were so excited to see her! Bailey was nervous the whole ride over and I think she knew something was up. But she is going to be just fine! I miss her dearly. They are a wonderful couple and very dedicated to Bailey and giving her the life she deserves. ~ LauraC Patty found a home with a wonderful woman named Barbara who met Patty at the IN expo. ~ JoanneF Murphy’s got "soft eyes". I don't see how anyone could get mad at him. If someone weren't a Poodle lover, Murphy would win them over in a heartbeat. The Macho's are going to be very happy with him. I know they're so excited! ~ CindyJ You know how it feels when you have a gift you are REALLY excited to give someone and you almost can't wait until that special day to give it to them......that's how I felt with Darla and Sharon today! I was SO excited for Sharon to meet Darla and although Darla was scared, Sharon was ready for that and it was a beautiful hand off. My heart and my head are at peace tonight. I'll miss that little one in bed at night and her quiet way of saying hi when I walked in the door....but I know Sharon will love her as much if not more than I could! I am blessed to be part of such a wonderful life changing event. ~ PaulaE Teddy was adopted so now he has a new home and a new playmate Oscar. ~ SueC Athena was adopted tonight by Linda and Duain Tischer. They are absolutely wonderful. They have 2 small dogs - Jeeper, a Llaso and Minnie, a St/poodle mix. Athena happily slept in Minnie's new bed. Athena will be much loved and taken care of VERY well. ~ JudyP Chelsea found a home with the Belfers, who fell in love with her. ~ Laura, Heidi, MaryAnn Joey weighed in at 5.6# soaking wet. This little guy had a way of wriggling right into you heart. Yesterday at Petco everyone was taking turn snuggling with him and each time he cuddled up to their chests and took naps. Joey was adopted by the Bergman's in Brown Deer. They brought along Julie's mom who is very much into rescuing dogs and all were in love with Joey immediately. ~ CarolP My Sadie was adopted Sunday to a wonderful couple with a male (2 1/2 yr old) Shih Tzu and a very nice daughter Ashley. ~ JanS We can all congratulate the little diva, Miss Snowflake on her acquisition of new servants/family: Deb Johnson and her family. ~ Nick Darla was adopted yesterday. by Constance from Mt. Prospect IL. She has a new fur brother Bobo who she connected with right away. As soon as she saw her new fur brother her tail went crazy!!! As soon as I put her down in her new home she started sniffing everything and her tail was still going crazy!!! I know this family will take very good care of her and treat her like the little princess she is. ~ SandraM Diesel got adopted. Nicole works with Marie and totally feel in love with Diesel. She brought her mom, brother, aunt and boyfriend to pick Diesel up. Everyone was buying this lucky guy gifts. She called me to ask me some things and said they are just in love with him and he is having a ball at their house. ~ JudyP Donna Mejdrich's shih tzu, Coco, wore a sign on his back "I want Pongo as my brother." The campaign was successful. Pongo is going to love the fenced in yard and having a buddy to play with! ~ KimP Mikey went to his new home tonight with his new brothers, Tippy (spaniel mix) and Charlie (Tzu/Chi mix). He walked into the house like he'd always lived there and immediately made himself at home. My seniors helped me pack his bags and tried to give him a little push out the door, but I know that Davie and Foz will miss him as they were the unstoppable playing machines together. I think he will do wonderfully with Marge and her furkids, and at 12 weeks of age, he is already almost completely housetrained, has learned how to sit and is scary smart. Man, the house seems quiet/calm tonight. ~ LeannL June and I traveled to the ends of the earth (Spring Valley Illinois) today to visit Chet and Diane who applied to adopt Nutmeg. Turns out it was a wonderful home for her and she is a smaller version of their previous dog. June, thanks for trekking along with me. ~ CarolP I met Mr. Bear at Petco Harwood Heights. I thought about him everyday afterward, even though I didn't think seriously about adopting him initially. ~ MaryL [Bear’s new mom] Vicki was adopted to Linda and Bill Pruett of Warrenville! She will live a very pampered life. Vicki's new sister is a Dachshund/Yorkie mix. Bill has his own business and the dogs go to his office! His staff loves fussing over the dogs. ~ JuneE Henry was adopted by Barbara Zander. I know he will have a good home there and he already loves his new brother. He has made himself at home. He slept all the way home in her arms and is getting plenty of loving there. ~CarolP / JayneS My foster Phoenix’s health rapidly deteriorates, there is only one gift we can give him before the final one. John and I are adopting him. This brave and wonderful little stray will cross the Rainbow Bridge, more likely sooner than later (I am suspecting it will happen this weekend) with his own last name. And with our love. ~ Bekye Roxy went to her forever home today. Tom Ivey adopted her, he is a WONDERFUL man who will love her and spoil her and make her a queen for the rest of her life. I knew that she would be okay when she kissed his hand. Tom got down on the floor and just talked to her . . it was amazing. He loved her from the minute we walked in. He is retired and is home all day and that is just what I wanted for her, he is going to take her every where with him, and he said she is going to be his best girl. They were both looking for a companion and someone to love and now they have each other. I cannot tell you how quiet it seems this morning, waking up without her, and walking down the stairs without her was very hard this morning, even Carina is sad, but in my heart I know that Roxy woke up this morning and the minute she saw Tom her tail was wagging. ~ Carri Griffin goes to his furever home. He is such a good boy and did I mention, ADORABLE! ~ JulieH Good Wishes and Thanks… Our dogs in their forever homes One of the most heartwarming aspects of rescue, is the love between people and animals, the homes who welcome animals with love. From people who believe in us, our dogs, and rescue: To Joanne: Finnegan is doing wonderful. He is such a great dog. We absolutely love him. He has such a funny personality. We had our kitchen remodeled over the winter, while the workers were there I took him to my sister’s during the day. I still take him there everyday when we are at work and school, they have a dog also and Finnegan loves to play with her. ~ Kelly Angel is living up to her name. She is a pure angel!! She just wants to please and be loved. She is very attached to me which I am thrilled about since all of my kids are in school all day. She loves walks and pretty much goes everywhere with me. She especially likes walks to the kids school at pickup time. She has brought nothing but joy to us. ~ Nicole BeeBe (Wrigley) came to work with me one day (I'm a teacher). He loved being the center of all the kids world. The kids loved him, and he loved them. He wasn't scared at all! Overall, Wrigs has been a great addition to our family. Everyone who visits, especially his grandpa, adores him! His grandma is so in love with him that she is thinking of adopting one for herself when the time is right. He has gotten quite used the good life. He has become an expert cuddlier and eater! He has filled out quite a bit! It suits him well. As mentioned earlier he always wagging his tail and just loves his new home. Thank you for everything, Kristi, Chris, Lambeau, and Wrigley. Here is money for the quilt raffle tickets. Odean/longtime friend of Bekye. Rena, Here is a check for the raffle tickets, plus $10 to add to the pot! We love our little guy that we adopted last spring. Although he had been paralyzed in January, you would never know it by looking at him running with glee today. Our little guy is soooo popular and charming. Everyone just loves him. We are very lucky. Thanks for all your hard work. Greg and Paula Kula The $18 is for the tickets. The $100 is to help cover the cost of our Ginger. She is a good girl. Thank you. ChuckZ Sandy and family have fallen in love with Wesley, the Pug/Shih Tzu mix! Hi NBSTR – It would be nice to know that all the shih tzus could be as happy as out little Herbie. We just love him. He is so much fun. Even though I had to bribe Carol Pfeiffer with an apple pie. It was well worth it. JoAnn and Ed We enjoy our Sammi. She loves our fenced in back yard. She also loves sleeping with me and likes snuggling up with Carl or me – and loves her walks – which is also good for me. ~ Carl and Frances Gratton Just want you to know we are enjoying Krissy, whom we adopted in September. She is a treasure. We worked with Mary Ann – who was wonderful. Thanks to NBSTR. ~ Pat Murphy / Jeanne Ternes Zac's mother called me today. They LOVE him and he is great. They changed his name to Ewok and he is in love with Alex - the dad. She said when he comes home he is all jumpy and excited to see him. She said she bathed him and combs him everyday - including his tail. All the prayers for Zac, I mean Ewok, to behave have so far been answered. This is great for a little guy the first vet told me to consider putting down. ~ JudyP Thank you to all of you for all of your help in finding Loki, Dennis, and I our forever new buddy. Henry’s new name is Haakon (a good Norwegian name). He is an absolute lover dog. His favorite time is “LUNCH.” I took him to meet the neighbors. Everyone went crazy. I then took him to the bank to introduce him to my work buddies. He charmed them too. He and Loki play lots. ~ BarbZ Rex is happy in his home with mom, dad and 2 active teenage girls. He likes to visit them at their softball games and hang out with their friends!~ GinaH Peaches, renamed Bailey, was adopted by Cindy and Craig Phair. Zac has been giving us kisses and lets us pick him up and give belly rubs. He loves to play with his ball and pretty much entertains himself. We love seeing him play and seeing him so happy. He is a joy to have around. Thanks for everything Judy. ~ Mauriel I adopted Frankie and Scottie from NBSTR in April and I cannot tell you how happy I am with these two little guys. ~ Catherine Keane I am Heather, my grandfather adopted Roxy yesterday! I just wanted to say thank you as he is SO HAPPY, he loves her! I also help run a rescue in Atlanta so I was happy when I found you guys online and he visited your adoptions. (at one point his petstore where he gets bird food had him convinced that their shih tzu pups were bred by good Amish people, I beg to differ, PUPPY MILL) so I was happy he had a puppy mill rescue. Chrissy, our 10-year-old Lhasa/Shih Tzu that we adopted from your organization is still running our household and we’re still enjoying her very much. She has everything under control! Enclosed is a donation. PatM From us to you: Thank you, more than we can ever express. Who’s your Daddy? Hi, Carol! I decided to send in a DNA sample from Blossom because I was really curious to see if she really was Lhasa or not. The size of her paws and her athleticism have always made me wonder exactly what she was made of! I thought you might be interested to see the results for yourself. This is part of the email that I received from the lab: Thank you for using BioPet Vet Labs DNA Breed Identification Test. The breeds listed below indicate the breeds that we detected in your dog These breeds are listed in order of prevalence, with the most prevalent breed listed first. Shih Tzu / Unidentified / Akita So, New Beginnings can give itself a pat on the back- you apparently rescued yet another (for the most part) Shih Tzu! Gotta wonder where that Akita came into play?!?! The lab has DNA from the 51 most popular AKC breeds on file, so I wonder what her unidentified part is? Although, it doesn't really matter. I would love her just the same! Hope you, Tom, and your dogs are well! Take care, Dawn and Blossom the Shakita? or Akitzu? Who are the “friends”? You, our members, the shelters we work with. And every other ethical rescue. Rescue is an inter-connected world. We at New Beginnings don’t rescue only Shih Tzu: we rescue smaller size dogs in need. Scratch a rescue or a rescue person, and you’re likely to find that dedication runs much more than breed-deep. Sometimes I actually prefer some of the friends, more of a variety of dogs and attitudes and personalities. Laura and I joke that I am more of the "and Friends" part of the rescue even though I've had my share of the Shih tzus. I like the different breeds. I guess I could be the go-to for any Poms, though… Buttercup is my third one in a matter of months. ~ Heidi Who we are Quilt Drawing Allie, Henry, Brittney at the first Papillion, NE Petsmart event Henry in the daylilies Me and my party hat Transport!
