This department is part of the HAN Faculty of Engineering
and offers state- of the art study programs in Chemistry,
Biochemistry and Medical Laboratory Technology. Its main
focus is to educate tertiary students and provide them with
the know-ledge, skills and professional attitudes needed to do
high-level research in Chemistry and Life Sciences.
General introduction to HAN - University
HAN University, short for ‘the University of Professional Education of
Arnhem and Nijmegen’ is a well-known centre for vocational training in
the Netherlands. HAN has campuses both in Arnhem and Nijmegen,
twin-cities located in the wooded country side on the eastern borders
with Germany.

Upon successful completion of their Life Sciences program, graduates can

Major and Minor
Each ‘learning route’ has a basic organization, which consists
of a major and a minor. The major is the main direction that
you have chosen within your educational programme and the
one in which you develop the professional competences. The
minor is a ‘secondary’ direction in which you expand on the
breadth of your professional competences or acquire more
in-depth proficiencies in order to characterize yourself in the
practice of your profession. The choice of a minor depends
on your ambitions and talents. When you have completed
both your major and minor, you are very well prepared for
the job market.
Practical component
Putting theory into practice is one of the aims of the Life
Sciences program. This is done by means of projects, the work
placement and the final thesis.
Core competences (related to the professional tasks) which will
be acquired during the four-year course are:

Admission criteria
The Bachelor program in Life Sciences is available to all
students who have successfully completed their formal
education at a senior high school (in the Netherlands: ‘HAVO/
VWO’, ‘Natuur en Techniek’ or ‘Natuur en Gezondheid’) and
who had English as a main subject. If you do not meet these
requirements but if you are motivated for Life Sciences, please

possible with extra courses.
Non-Dutch students should consult our Enrolment office for
specific accreditation of their previous education and training
(see next page). Knowledge and skills in the English language
(Toefl 550 or higher score) must be at a high level in order to

will approve the final enrolment application, to ensure that all
the requirements have been fulfilled.

Admission criteria
The Bachelor program in Life Sciences is available to all
students who have successfully completed their formal
education at a senior high school (in the Netherlands: ‘HAVO/
VWO’, ‘Natuur en Techniek’ or ‘Natuur en Gezondheid’) and
who had English as a main subject. If you do not meet these
requirements but if you are motivated for Life Sciences, please

E LifeSciences@han.nl to establish if admission is still
possible with extra courses.
Non-Dutch students should consult our Enrolment office for
specific accreditation of their previous education and training
(see next page). Knowledge and skills in the English language
(Toefl 550 or higher score) must be at a high level in order to
concen­trate on the course contents. Finally, an academic panel
will approve the final enrolment application, to ensure that all
the requirements have been fulfilled.

have an open-door policy for
all our students, and offer foreign students ‘buddies’ to help
them ease into life at a Dutch tertiary institution. The classes are
small. Each class has its own mentor who is a native speaker in
the English language.

Registration for foreign students is easy.
Simply download a registration form via the internet site
www.hanuniversity.nl or ask for a form by sending an e-mail
to LifeSciences@han.nl.
Dutch students can register via the Information Maintenance
site (www.ib-groep.nl). When asked for ‘course’ you need to
fill out ‘Biologie en Medisch Laboratoriumonderzoek’ (and the
Croho number –34397-). The code for Han University is 25 KB.
The Information Maintenance Group then passes on your
information to HAN University administration, who then
send you a registration form. Simply cross the ‘Life Sciences’
program for final enrolment. Enrolments for Life Sciences are
accepted in their order of arrival. In the event of insufficient
number of enrolments or unforeseen circumstances, the
University reserves the right to cancel the program. Participants
will then be notified as soon as possible. Please note that the
Life Sciences program as announced is subject to alteration
without prior notice after printing of this brochure. Please

This department is part of the HAN Faculty of Engineering
and offers state- of the art study programs in Chemistry,
Biochemistry and Medical Laboratory Technology. Its main
focus is to educate tertiary students and provide them with
the know-ledge, skills and professional attitudes needed to do
high-level research in Chemistry and Life Sciences.
General introduction to HAN - University
HAN University, short for ‘the University of Professional Education of
Arnhem and Nijmegen’ is a well-known centre for vocational training in
the Netherlands. HAN has campuses both in Arnhem and Nijmegen,
twin-cities located in the wooded country side on the eastern borders
with Germany.
The Faculties of Economics, Education, Engineering, Informatics and
Communication and Health Care offer certified tertiary course programs
to more than 21.000 students at BA and MA level. The HAN has firm
links to companies and institutions both in the Netherlands and across
the borders. In addition, the HAN closely co-operates with other
universities all over the world.

center for innovative research. The cooperation between the
Institute of Applied Sciences and the HAN BioCenter enables
the university to provide all activities concerning Life Sciences:
