The Pearson Lakes Art Center recently lost
a long-time volunteer and supporter. Lois
Powers, Age 96, of Okoboji, passed away on
March 5, 2016. Lois was one of the founding
members of the Lakes Art Center. She served
as president of the Lakes Art Center in
1972 and again in 1981. We’ll remember Lois
for the hours of dedication she put into
getting the art center up and running in the
original barn-like building many referred to
as “the red barn.” In visiting with Lois as
we prepared for our 50th anniversary year in
2015, Lois expressed what she remembered most,
the tree growing in the middle of the red
barn building and how it became “a delightful
surprise” as visitors loved how unique it
was and how the many volunteers decorated
it with little bird houses, painted signs
and tools. We also remember Lois as one of
the visionaries behind Art in the Park. The
very first Art in the Park was held in 1982 in
front of the red barn and the lawn was filled
with artists. The Pearson Lakes Art Center is
forever grateful to Lois and our condolences
go out to her family and friends.

Beauty, elegance, grace — intricacies of
pattern, color and form — not the common
parlance of contemporary art in America for
many decades, yet these are the elements that
inspire Cynthia Whynott to create paintings and
works that embody these enduring components.
The world of Ukiyo-e inspires her art, with
complex patterns and flowing shapes drawn from
nature. The elegant portrayal of the Japanese
kimono’s contrasting patterns is a recurring
theme in her work. As in nature, an essence of
beauty is revealed in many varied ways.
In today’s world, which is rife with
violence, angst, and endless exploration of
harshness and man’s primitive self, her love
of beauty and color lead her to create work
that provides a respite from the currency of
a conflicted world. Whynott seeks to provide
the viewer with a sense of tranquility and
contentment that speaks to a better self in
a world of calmness and serenity. In another
vein, she has been drawn to the Pop Art scene
of the 70’s and diverges from the path of a high
aesthetic to the inherent whimsy and humor in
the images and words that intrigue. She strives
to create a sense of calmness and appreciation
in the viewer, for her role in life is to create
beauty and inspire others to seek it out.

Cynthia Whynott:
A 40 Year Retrospective
Opening Reception &
Artist Talk:
Thursday, June 16
5–7 PM
Daniel Dean produces sculpture, video, audio,
and site-responsive installations that explore
our relationship with media and technology. Dean
transforms the familiar using repetition, shifts
in scale and context, and displaced language.
The merging of the immaterial and material world
is expressed by reimagining the connections
between exchange vs. value systems, utility
vs. aesthetics, and collective participation
vs. personal experience. The resulting liminal
space is explored, for example, through the
use of computational forms like algorithms that
reflect the realities of how media effects our
perceptions of the world.
Collaboration and research is essential to
Dean’s practice. He currently teaches new media
studio and theory courses at Minneapolis College
of Art and Design and Macalester College,
St.Paul. Dean has exhibited and performed
his work nationally and internationally at:
the Weisman Museum, Minneapolis; The Soap
Factory, Minneapolis; Northern Spark Festival,
Minneapolis; the Bakken Museum, Minneapolis; The
Katzen Arts Center, Washington, DC; Institut für
Alles Mögliche, Berlin; NGBK, Berlin, ZKM Center
for Art and Media, Karlsruhe; and the Beijing
Film Academy. Dean has an MFA in Experimental
and Media Art from the University of Minnesota.

Christopher T. Hood (b. 1989), is an artist born
and raised in between several states (Kentucky,
Indiana, and New York), currently living and
painting in Iowa. His works have been exhibited
in several group shows in New York City and
Long Island, in addition to other small scale
shows in other states. Group show highlights
include: SW!PE at National Arts Club’s Trask
Gallery, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. Working
primarily in acrylic on canvas, his paintings
depict in an abstract manner his thoughts and
ideas of society, human conditions, and current
events. His current works have taken on more
metaphorical languages within the imagery
itself, utilizing collage and mixed medium on
paper that eventually act as sketches for future
works. Each work reflects a piece of the artist’s
memory: a figurative embodiment of ones history,
an interest, an idea, etc. He is primarily
interested in the idea of ephemeral works made
through mass production for marketability, while
there is a master work, or what could be called
“model zero”, and the idea that art is meant to
represent a means to pull an emotional response
to the material rather than investigating only
the main idea of the work.

Views from the Gast family’s 1946 Cessna 140
airplane have become a point of reference for
a series of large scale works by Spirit Lake
artist, Danielle Clouse Gast. This perspective
on the Iowa Great Lakes and the surrounding
areas has opened up fresh compositions while
emphasizing the style most associated with
Clouse Gast’s work. Her use of organized,
geometric shapes and lines (referencing planned
groves, repetitive docks, and scattered, playful
boats) results in an abstract blend of inviting
landscapes.

From the Ground Up
Opening Reception &
Artist Talk:
Thursday, August 11
5–7 PM
My paintings are abstractions that explore the
visual effect of tensions between painting and
sculpture. The works are tightly designed and
compositionally complex. Each painting is a
long process of working out a new image. On the
occasion that a painting is cultivated quickly,
it is the result of a longer struggle with a
previous painting that didn’t fully resolve
itself.
Moving from (almost) traditional still-life
paintings to abstractions of various sorts,
the practice is constantly exploring a mish/
mash of flatness and illusion; abstraction and
representation. The best description of the
work thus far describes this as “a play between
shadow and pattern.”
Making a painting is a conversation with my
materials. Each painting seems to create itself
and, although abstract, becomes a self-portrait
and a record of time and place. The practice is
fulfilling, because I witness psychic content
manifesting itself in physical materials.

Low re-cast ceramic pieces also work well. The

Light is the master key. It brings design, color,
and value together creating an atmosphere alive
with vibrating echoes of color. The focus will
be on Luminosity, and on controlling the power
of Light, on the color of Light, bouncing that
color, and floating paint on water for a clean
light & air illusion. Luminosity brings life.
It is the illusion of light radiating out of
something. Light can radiate from a face, sky,
book, flower, window, common objects - your
imagination is the limit. In 2015, Dora received
Fellow Maxima Cum Laude status in the American
Artist Professional League in NYC. Please

All materials included! Discover Eco-printing
and natural dye methods. Eco-printing allows you
to print directly with plant material, leaves,
blooms, berries, rust. Use local plant material
to design and create one silk scarf with the
Eco-print method. We’ll explore mordents and
methods. As the contact print bundles steam, we
will play with an indigo vat. Indigo is a plant
dye as well. Try Shibori style folding and tying
methods to create patterns in a second silk
scarf. Eco-print works well with animal fibers,
such as silk and wool. Indigo likes all natural
fibers. (Think blue jeans!) You may bring one
