LOCAL
HISTORY
Finds discovered at Passo delle Erbe which date back to between 7000
and 5000 BC suggest that the Badia valley was home to temporary settlements long before it was permanently populated from the Bronze Age onwards. When the Romans conquered the Alps in 15 AD, the valley became
part of the Roman Empire.
Up until the Middle Ages, the Badia valley belonged to the counties of
the Pustertal and Nori valleys. When it was eventually split up, the right
half (Marebbe, La Valle, Badia and Corvara) was given to the Sonnenburg
monastery for Benedictine nuns near San Lorenzo in the Pustertal valley.
The left half, which went to the bishop of Brixen together with Rina, now
makes up the municipality of San Martin de Tor (San Martin, Picolin, Ju,
Lungiarü and Antermoia). It was only after Emperor Joseph II dissolved the
Sonnenburg monastery in 1785 and the bishopric was secularized in 1803
that the population of the valley became direct subjects of the Austrian
Empire. With the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy after WWI, the local
population became Italian citizens. In 1927, the Ladin-speaking territories
were split up and assigned to three different provinces: Bolzano, Trento
and Belluno – a political ruling which remains valid to this day.
Today, the Ladin valleys are home to some 30,000 native speakers, and in
the Ladin-speaking parts of South Tyrol and Trentino, this ancient tongue
is an official language used in local administration and education.

Le salüde
Bun dé, bun domisdé!
Bona sëra, bona net!

DID YOU KNOW?
Ladin, the native language of the local
population, is a Rhaeto-Romance tongue
and spoken not only in Val Badia but also in the valleys and villages
surrounding the Sella massif (Val Gardena, Fodom, Fassa and Cortina
d’Ampezzo) – and as far away as in the Friuli region and in the Swiss
canton of Grisons. For a long time, the Dolomite regions did not have
a standardised, homogeneous written version of their language. Efforts to unify the different dialects in writing however eventually led
to the development of Ladin Dolomitan, or standard Dolomite Ladin.

What's your name?
How are you? I am fine.
What are you going to do now?
I was just about to go shopping.
It's been snowing, so I am going skiing.
All lifts are working already.
Do you know how to ski?
No, but I'd like to learn it.
Why don't you sign up at one of the local ski schools?
There are plenty of good skiing instructors to teach you.
I'd like to learn how to snowboard.
What are we doing tonight?
We are going sledging: the slopes are lit at night!
Tomorrow night we'll go ice skating.
Tonight we're going to watch the skiing instructors
ski down the mountain with torches.
There will be live music and dancing.
I'm having so much fun in this village!

STROLLS
Take a deep breath of pure, fresh mountain air and unwind without straining yourself. A relaxed stroll along one of the many hiking trails around
San Vigilio and San Martin de Tor invigorates your mind, body and soul
– even in the coldest of seasons! Many routes can be combined with one
another or walked in inverse direction, offering a large number of possible
combinations. It might turn out entirely impossible to resist a pleasant
stroll through our stunning winter landscapes! But, for your own safety,
please pay attention to which type of path you choose, and remember: ski
runs: for skiing | sledging track: for sledging | cross-country skiing slopes:
for cross-country skiing!
H = way there, R = way back
The two picturesque municipalities Marebbe and San Martin de Tor are
cosily nestled at the heart of the world-famous Dolomites. With only 3000
inhabitants, over the years Marebbe has successfully retained its quaint
look and character. SAN VIGILIO is both the administrative centre
of the Marebbe municipal area and a key destination for tourism and culture. The hamlets Pieve di Marebbe, Rina and Longega offer a fascinating
glimpse of the charming historic Ladin communities. With the remarkable
Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and the popular Kronplatz ski resort on
the village's doorstep, San Vigilio di Marebbe is an attractive destination
for winter sports and a snow-filled break.
6 San Vigilio | San Martin | Winter Info
SAN MARTIN, the centre of the municipal area of the same name,
is home to both the Micurà de Rü Institute of Ladin Culture and the Museum Ladin – two significant institutions which foster and cultivate the
Ladin language and customs, turning the village into the undisputed cultural centre of the Badia valley (read more on p. 28-29). Small and yet
wow, notably welcoming Picolin is just around the corner. Lungiarü is an
unspoiled mountain hamlet at the heart of the Dolomites, framed by the
imposing Puez-Odle and Pütia massifs. At the foot of the latter, laid out
between lush meadows and forests, lies Antermoia – the ideal starting
point for a large number of hikes.
SAN VIGILIO
TRU DLES LIONDES (H – R: 1 h)
This instructive trail starts at the Aqua Bad Cortina Oasis Hotel (on
Str. Fanes) and offers insights into the legendary Fanes realm.
SAN VIGILIO – LÉ DLA CREDA (H – R: 2 h)
The stroll begins on Str. Fanes: Walk through the Pes-Pesc playground,
then continue along the paved dirt road parallel to the cross-country
skiing slope (pedestrians: please keep off the slope) until just before
you reach the Ciamaor sports grounds. The forest trail will take you to
Ciamaor (to the left of the football pitch). Having passed the Ciamaor
bridge, keep left and continue along the picturesque trail past Horse
Trekking Mareo until you get to Lé dla Creda.
SAN VIGILIO – TAMERSC – PEDERÜ (H – R: 6 h)
Follow routes A+B to Lé dla Creda. Continue along the main road until
you reach the Tamersc fields and, after 3 km, the Pederü mountain inn.
BRÜSCIA (H – R: 1 h)
Setting off from Hotel Monte Paraccia, follow the path uphill all the
way to the water reservoir, then turn right towards Ciamaor. Walk back
to San Vigilio using the roadside pavement.
SAN VIGILIO – TORPËI – PINËI (H – R: 1 h)
From Hotel Monte Paraccia, this path takes you uphill to the hamlet
Torpëi. Walk past the farmhouses all the way to Pinëi and then back
to San Vigilio.
SAN VIGILIO – CHI VAI – TORPËI (H – R: 2 h)
The path begins at the Miara cable car station and continues uphill
along the road to the first left-turn hairpin bend. There, take a right
onto the forest road following the signs to A Sorëdl until you get to the
hamlet Torpëi. There are two options to return to San Vigilio: turning
left, follow the trail towards Hotel Monte Paraccia or turn right instead
to the valley station of the Miara cable car.
SAN VIGILIO – VAL – COSTA – RAS (H – R: 2 h)
This route too begins at the Miara cable car station: Walk along the
road to the hamlet Val, continue on the forest path to the hamlet Costa
and then back to San Vigilio via Ras.
SAN VIGILIO – SARJËI (H – R: 2 h)
Setting off from Hotel Les Alpes, follow the trail until you reach Sarjëi
(food and drinks available at the Agriturismo Soleseid).

FROM PASSO DELLE ERBE AND ANTERMOIA
SAN VIGILIO – CIASÉ (H – R: 1 h)
From Str. Ciasé (road opposite Garni Cristallo) walk to Gran Pré business park, then turn right and continue until you reach the Ciasé
farmhouse. Walk uphill to the Bella Vista Hotel Emma and return to
San Vigilio on the roadside pavement.
RODA DE BÖRZ (H – R: 1.5 h)
From Passo delle Erbe, this hike runs along the forest road at the foot
of the Pütia peak and back to the starting point. There are plenty of
signs for orientation. Please note: Pedestrians please keep off the crosscountry skiing slope!
SAN VIGILIO – PASSO FURCIA (H – R: 4 h)
Walk past the Miara cable car station and follow the road up to the La
Miara inn and on to the hamlet Rara. Turn right onto forest path no. 1
which will take you to Passo Furcia, where a number of inns offer food
and drinks. We suggest the same route for your return journey.
PASSO DELLE ERBE – COSTACES (H – R: 1 h)
SAN VIGILIO – KRONPLATZ
This trail is fascinating even without skis – just get yourself a cable car
return ticket to the top of Mount Kronplatz. The view from up there is
simply breath-taking! Don't miss: From the impressive Concordia bell,
marvel at the 360° peak relief depicting the mountains surrounding
Kronplatz and gaze out into the fascinating Alpine panorama.
8 San Vigilio | San Martin | Winter Info
From the church in Lungiarü, head south-west towards Frëina/Seres
along the road until you reach the bridge. There, a small path leads
through the forest to Frëina. Follow the paved road on the right and,
in the bend after the bridge, take the narrow path on your left. Walk
past the Vanc farmstead to the hamlet Seres, a lovely example of the
extraordinary historic Viles. Val di Murins, the valley of the mills, opens
up just before the bridge over the stream.
Setting off from Passo delle Erbe, take the forest road just above the
Ütia de Börz mountain inn in either direction (circular trail).
ANTERMOIA – MONTEMURO (H: 2 h)
RODA DLES VILES: WALK BETWEEN THE HAMLETS (2 – 4 h)
Setting off from Pieve Marebbe, you can enjoy a number of walks (A
or B) to the hamlets of Brach, Ciaseles, Frontü, Cianoré, Biëi, Fordora,
Frena and La Costa. From each hamlet, the next one is visible and easily reached by connecting trails and roads, leaving you free to choose
the best route to explore the amazing beauty of these landscapes and
the architectural singularity of the hamlets.
A SORËDL – THEME WALK ( 1.5 h)
The trail meanders upwards along the sunny hillside of Costa and Ches
Costes. Setting off from the Miara cable car valley station, follow the
signs marked A Sorëdl past Ras and Costa. Once you have crossed the
woods, walk on past Val to the Torpëi farmhouse. Take a left along the
paved road all the way back to the village past Hotel Monte Paraccia.
LUNGIARÜ – VAL DI MURINS (H – R: 2 h)
From Antermoia, take the hiking trail up to Passo delle Erbe. At the
peak station, follow trail no. 1 to the Montemuro inn (closed in winter).
KRONPLATZ: WINTER PANORAMA TRAIL (H – R: 1 hour 15)
From the Ruis cable car peak station (2275 m) at the top of Mount
Kronplatz, turn left in the direction of the race track. Walk along the
track until you reach a lookout point with a cross, offering a stunning
view onto the Dolomites and San Vigilio, Pieve Marebbe and Rina. If
you keep walking, the trail will take you to the Graziani inn (2080 m).
Take the same route to return to the peak station of the Ruis cable car.

Pass, where you can enjoy the stunning views of the majestic Sass dla
Crusc peak.
FROM SAN MARTIN AND PICOLIN
TRU VISTLES (H – R: 1.5 h)
With the help of a series of games and signs containing interesting information, this theme walk cleverly combines nature, culture and tradition.
It sets off from the road opposite the church gate in the centre of San
Martin de Tor and runs along the Rio Gadera stream.
PICOLIN – JU (H: 1 hour 15)
From the cable car parking, walk in the direction of San Martin de Tor

SKI TOURING
and snow-shoe hiking
The surroundings of San Vigilio and San Martin de Tor are a real paradise
for every fan of mountain sports: The Fanes and Senes plateaus are ideal
for idyllic snow-shoe hiking and ski touring, and Puez with its advanced
high-altitude ski touring routes is still a well-kept secret among the locals.
Many of the easy routes around San Vigilio or up to the refuges in the
nature park can be enjoyed without a guide and are a true delight for
nature lovers.
While some of the routes around Puez are classified as easy tours due
to their relative lack of difficulty and dangerous spots, others require a
great deal of experience at high altitudes as they are very exposed and run
through difficult terrain. Our local mountain guides offer both demanding
tours around and up to mountain peaks for advanced skiers and easy excursions for beginners looking for that extra bit of experience and safety.
More information can be obtained from the Tourist Offices (for guided
hikes, go to pages 10 – 12).

SNOW PLAYGROUND
A snowPlayground is not strictly speaking a snow park but a challenging surface that can be described as somewhere between a normal slope
and a fun park. Snow playgrounds typically feature a number of freestyle
elements such as roller-coasters, quarter pipes, diagonal and longitudinal
ripples or folds and many more fun tricks. San Vigilio's very own snowPlayground is located directly off the Pedagá slope!

child-friendly drag lift at the heart of Antermoia ideally caters for the needs
of both beginners and those looking to improve their skills. And while
you’re there, why not book a lesson with a professional skiing instructor?

THE 12 FIS RULES OF CONDUCT ON THE SLOPES
We would like to remind our guests that the following rules must be observed at all times – the 12 FIS rules of conduct are the "laws" of the slopes.
Please remember: Be careful and always act respectfully towards other skiers
and snowboarders.
1. Always ski or snowboard in a way which does not harm others or put
them in any kind of danger.
2. Make sure others around you can see you – and that you can see them. Adapt
your speed and conduct to your skiing or snowboarding skills and to the prevailing conditions of terrain, snow and weather as well as to the density of traffic.
3. When approaching from behind, make sure you do not put any skiers/
snowboarders ahead at risk.
4. Upon overtaking, always leave enough room for the skier/snowboarder
you are overtaking to make any voluntary or involuntary movement.
In Italy: At crossings, skiers/snowboarders coming from the right have
the right of way.
5. When entering a slope, setting off again after stopping or moving upwards, always look up and down the slope to avoid putting yourself or others in danger.
6. Unless absolutely necessary, avoid stopping on the slopes in narrow places or where visibility is restricted. After a fall in such a place, move clear of
the slope as quickly as possible.
7. All skiers/snowboarders either climbing or descending on foot must
keep to the side of the slope. In Italy: Moving up the slope is, except in
cases of emergency, strictly forbidden.
8. Always respect the local signs and markings.
9. In case of an accident, every skier/snowboarder is legally obligated to
provide assistance.
10. All skiers/snowboarders and witnesses, whether a responsible party or
not, must exchange names and addresses following an accident.
11. Keep a safe distance to the edge of the slope as well as between yourself
and others.
12. Always respect the space needed by others to safely ski or snowboard.
DID YOU KNOW?
In Italy, children up to the age of
14 must wear a helmet.
The emergency rescue service can be called from the nearest lift
station (emergency call 118).

CROSS-COUNTRY
SKIING
Cross-country skiing is becoming increasingly popular, and many guests
have discovered and fallen for this fascinating Nordic discipline on the
stunning ski runs of the Badia valley.
SAN VIGILIO
DOLOMITI NORDICSKI
From one end of the village, a 23 km track winds down into the Marebbe
valley through the quiet forests and snow-covered mountain pastures of
the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, where the fresh air seems to glisten
and the soothing tranquillity of the winter dominates the Dolomites. On
many different routes (rings), cross-country skiing enthusiasts will find
ideal skiing conditions as well as breath-taking surroundings and inviting
mountain inns offering mouth-watering delicacies. Group lessons and individual lessons are available at the San Vigilio ski schools.
Cross-country skiing in San Vigilio
At the very heart of San Vigilio di Marebbe, close to the Aqua Bad Cortina
Oasis Hotel, a beautiful cross-country slope sets off along the romantic
Mareo valley all the way to the Pederü mountain inn. One glimpse of the
picture-book winter landscapes, and you won't be able to stop yourself
from grabbing your skis and setting off into the white fields and forests,
to relax far from the daily hustle and bustle. The slope is suitable for both
classic cross-country skiing and skating.
24 San Vigilio | San Martin | Winter Info
For all winter sports enthusiasts who wish to learn or improve their crosscountry skiing, there are two ski schools in San Vigilio which offer both
group lessons and individual lessons For ski schools, see p. 20.
Of course you don't have to ski the whole 23 km of the slope: the track
is arranged in a number of routes (so-called rings) which allow you to
return to San Vigilio at any time. Alternatively, you can catch a Mareobus
or Citybus service to Pederü or to the football grounds (Skibus stop) and
start skiing at different points of the slope.

AGRICULTURE
Agriculture plays an important role in South Tyrol. The efforts of local
farmers to conserve and protect our cultivated landscapes have also
greatly benefited regional tourism. We therefore kindly ask our guests to
treat the beauty of our nature and the hard work of local farmers with
respect and care.
WE SUGGEST
If you are looking for a special souvenir or even just a piece of San Vigilio or San
Martin de Tor to take home with you, why not try some of the many mouthwatering South Tyrolean products on offer at our traditional farmers' markets.
The Senni cooperative too offers a wide range of produce made with milk from
our mountain farms: free from genetic engineering, fresh and unique. Quality
and great taste from our Alpine landscapes!
