Iran opening up for
foreign investment
Organized by:
The year 2016 marks a new era for doing business in Iran
After the Vienna agreement between Iran and world powers of July 2015 the year 2016
will see international sanctions lifted in return for Iranian curbs on its nuclear program.
Especially in the digital sector, US-giants will enter Iran‘s 79-million-strong, highly
educated, consumption-savvy market for the very first time whereas many others will
return after a period of standstill.
This development also marks a new era for iran telecom, the most valuable and largest
technology event in Iran since its inception in the year 2000.
To mark the new era of Doing Business in Iran and to take account of the technological
developments in the past 15 years, iran telecom has been renamed in iran telecom
innovations and a new logo has been created.
The outlook for the future in Iran’s ICT business is
very positive!
At iran telecom innovations 2016 once again business and entertainment will go hand in hand
and all this with an extremely positive outlook on the future development.
There are the telco-halls with all the latest smart phones and tablets, but also presenting
serious visions and relevant proposals on the Internet of things including Smart City, Smart
Cars, …
And there are all the B2B halls where OEM’s discuss business with engineers and on what is
next on Iran’s agenda to modernize its CIT infrastructure.
As in 2015 where exhibitors and visitors were extremely satisfied, iran telecom innovations
2016 is becoming a milestone marking A new era of Doing Business in Iran.
“MTN Irancell is very optimistic about the future roadmap leveraging the latest development
happening between Iran and the international community. MTN Irancell confirms its readiness
for the new era of supporting new business opportunities in Iran and proactively prepared the
required infrastructure to support the increasing demand for Enterprise Business Solutions
specially by the new foreign investors, once the market will be totally open.” Mr Mazen Mroue,
MTN Irancell – COO

Iran is one of the
Middle East‘s leading importers of electronics
Iran has always been one of the most important markets for CIT services
and technologies in the Middle East. Even between 2010 and 2014, when
sanctions were most severe, Iran has imported electrical and electronic
technology worth 4.3 to 6.1 billion euros annually (ZVEI-German Electrical
and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association).
After the Vienna agreement between Iran and world powers of 14 July 2015
experts now foresee Iranian imports of electrical and electronic technology
easily to double within the next few years, reaching up to 12 billion euros
and more.
The agreement, which will see international sanctions lifted, has boosted
the appetite for doing business in Iran at the earliest opportunity. Some even
anticipate a „gold rush“ once Iran‘s 80-million-strong, highly educated,
consumption-savvy market opens up.

Iran’s telecom thrills European investors
Two leading European companies are set to buy stakes in Iran’s
biggest cellular operator, Mobile Telecommunication Company
(MCI), its head Vahid Sadouqi says.
MTN has an equivalent of about $1 billion in loan repayment and
accumulated dividends locked in Iran, which the company hopes
to repatriate with the lifting of sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
MCI, better known as Hamrah-e Aval to Iranians, dominates 70%
of the telecom market in the country of 80 million and is listed
worth over $4.3 billion on the country’s benchmark Tehran Stock
Exchange.
Iran’s other mobile phone operators are Taliya and Righ Tel.
“There is quite a lot of enthusiasm among foreign companies
in Iran’s telecom industry. In this regard, we have reached
agreements with two European operators which I prefer not
to name due to the sensitivity of the situation,” Sadouqi said
Tuesday.
There is growing interest by foreign investors in Iran’s stock
market in the wake of the new opening after the July nuclear
accord.
More than 400 financial entities are listed on the Tehran Stock
Exchange with a market capitalization of over $100 billion. Many
others are waiting for initial public offering which could catapult
the TSE to the top of the Middle East’s stock exchanges.
The state-run Telecommunication Company of Iran owns 90% of
MCI. Only 10% of the cellular operator‘s shares are public, which
have seen dramatic gains in recent years.
The Tehran bourse has scorched to several record highs in recent
years even under the most intensified set of US-led sanctions.
Sadouqi said foreign companies “are seriously looking to
purchase shares in MCI as a profitable company because, while
world operators have seen revenues sharply decline over the
past 10 years, MCI has continued to grow”.
Source: www.presstv.ir / 20 October 2015
Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology
Mahmoud Vaezi had already said that France‘s largest operator
Orange was in negotiations to buy shares in an Iranian telecom
company.
MCI has reportedly about 17 million postpaid and 49 million
prepaid subscribers.
Iran’s second largest operator MTN Irancell possesses 28% of
the market share. MTN owns 49% of unlisted Irancell which
constitutes the South African company’s third largest market.

The Iran mobile market
connectivity in 2014
• Mobile subscriptions: 83.2m (Largest in the Middle East)
• Internet traffic: 55%
• Facebook users: 58%
• Mobile traffic: 110% – 143% (2014 – 2017)
• Smartphone users: 8 million
• A country with a very strong engineering culture but lacks business skills
when it comes to startups.
• A country with political highs and lows – although recent political changes
have made it more prone to reform and reconciliation with the Western
world.
Iran Mobile Market
…
Iran is in fact the largest mobile market in the Middle East, with 83.2
million mobile subscriptions and 8 million smartphones in 2012. This is
evidently a large market of untapped Candycrush users, especially since
a wide range of sanctions, some covering iPhones, were recently lifted by
the US Treasury Department.
This mobile market is only going to expand even further, with a mobile
traffic rate of 110% that is set to increase to 142% in 2017.

Social Media in Iran
When it comes to Internet presence, all it takes is a quick look at the numbers
to show that Iran has more online users as Bahrain, UAE, Israel, Saudi Arabia,
Syria, Yemen and Jordan combined. Contrary to popular belief, these aren’t just
government-sponsored accounts that troll the Internet, but one of the largest organic communities in the world. In fact, Iran has the world’s largest blogosphere
relative to its population, with nearly 25% of users running a blog and another
21% of users that read or contribute to forums at least twice a day.
… roughly 60% of internet users still access their Facebook accounts through
proxies.
…, there are parts of the Iranian government itself that seem to be aware of the
importance of being social media savvy, with the Iranian foreign minister Javad
Zarif maintaining a popular Facebook page with over 900k likes. For comparison,
the British Prime Minister David Cameron has a paltry 250k likes.

It is no wonder to hear how Diasporas have related their interests in coming back
to Iran to grow businesses while potential emigrants are growingly hesitant to
leave what is steadily being identified as a significant emerging market. The educated tech-savvy youth have always seen the government’s attempts of technological control as a means to practice creative hacking. With growing liberalization,
increasing resources and a huge mobile potential, it will be very interesting to
see how Iran will take possession of mobile technology in the coming years.

Iran - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts
Iran shows progress
in 2014 with fibre network deployment
In recent years the international community identified Iran as lagging
behind in terms of broadband infrastructure and access, particularly
when compared to other GCC member states. However in 2014 there
are encouraging moves underway to improve this situation, with the
FttX operator Iranian-net currently deploying a fibre network which
aims to have 8 million customers by 2020.
Broadband penetration is also improving due to the growing number
of competing ISPs, made possible through a licensing scheme. Competition has also improved following the launch of alternative infrastructure-based offerings centred on WiMAX.
In 2014 there are four companies licensed to provide WiMAX services, including MobinNet, MTN Irancell; MTCE and Rayaneh Danesh. In
2013 Datak Telecom failed to obtain ongoing authorization to continue
to offer WiMAX services.
