Principals, Assistant Principals, Directors, NHCS Senior Leadership and NHC Board of Education Members kicked-off the new school year with 3 days of collaborative and inspirational informational sessions. They heard presentations from guest speakers and each other, they shared meals together, and they put their heads together in continued efforts to provide top educational experiences for NHCS students. Principals collaborate with one another, sharing ideas for increasing student success in the upcoming school year. Patrick McCarty is the new principal at Ashley High School. Formerly, he was the principal at Murray Middle. Kristin Jackson is the new principal at Blair Elementary School. Formerly, she was the principal at Lake Forest Academy. MaryPaul Beall is the new principal at Isaac Bear Early College High School. Formerly, she was the principal at Wrightsville Beach Elementary. Dr. Laura Jennings is the new principal at Lake Forest Academy. Formerly, she was the assistant principal at Alderman Elementary. Susan Sellers is the new principal at Rachel Freeman Elementary School of Engineering. Formerly, she served as a school transformation coach with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. Dr. Gerri Martin is the new principal at Sunset Park Elementary School. Formerly, she served as an education consultant for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. Bond Updates In November 2014, the voters of New Hanover County approved a $160 million bond referendum for new construction, additions, renovations and improvements to New Hanover County Schools’ facilities. Since approval of the project plan by the NHC Board of Education, contracts for design have been awarded and the projects are moving forward. Laney and Hoggard High schools’ additions and renovations are currently in the pre-design phase. Both schools will be getting a new 1,600 seat main gymnasium and support facilities. The current gyms will serve as auxiliary gyms. A new media center will be built at Laney, with the current one made into classrooms. Hoggard’s existing cafeteria and kitchen will be expanded. Site and infrastructure improvements are also planned at both locations. The projected timeline for construction at the two schools is June 2016 through August 2017. *Projects in blue are included in current additions and renovations. Porters Neck Elementary School The new northeast elementary school was officially named Porters Neck Elementary School at the September 1, 2015 Board of Education Meeting. Ground breaking for the new school is scheduled for November 2015. Substantial completion of the school building project is projected for February 28, 2017. Williams Elementary School Principal Amy Oots accepts a $500 grant from New Hanover County Keep America Beautiful for the school’s commitment to being "green!” 10 Fall 2015 Fifty Beginning Teachers attended the beginning teacher orientation August 1113, 2015 at the Board of Education Center. They participated in a Skype session led by Beverly Ladd, teacher at Pine Valley Elementary, along with other helpful sessions. Teachers and principals from Gregory and Williams Elementary Schools attended a Harvard Project Reads research project retreat in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Teams from both schools presented adaptions that they implemented to individualize the initiative to improve project outcomes for their students. The district will continue to hire the best and examine the needs of each school.” -Dr. Tim Markley 2014-15 READY Assessment Results Press Conference, September 2, 2015 Teachers at Ogden Elementary accessed a Google Doc Scavenger Hunt via QR codes to investigate the new offerings of the district’s Instructional Services pages. 11 A Visual Arts Teacher from New Hanover High School, Nicolette Johnson, helped students explore drawing, painting, mixed media, ceramics, and film-making as a camp counselor at UNC-Greensboro's Summer Art Camp. The camp culminated in a gallery showing of student work in the Gatewood Gallery on July 18th. Fall 2015 Lisa Burris presents to Student Support Services Counselors, School Social Workers, Nurses, In-School Suspension Coordinators, and Graduation Coaches for her last school year launched. Nourish NC representatives visited College Park Elementary Principal Maria Greene and Social Worker Jeannie Hovis to talk about how the program can positively impact students. Amy Oots, principal at Mary C. Williams Elementary School, was honored by the Wilmington Rotary as a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. Paul Harris Fellows are named for their "significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world." The Wilmington Rotary has been a valuable partner of Williams Elementary for three years, donating time and literature to the school's Media Center and students. 12 During the teacher work days before traditional school started, Murray teachers prepared their classrooms and caught up with their peers. During a professional development session, Special Education teachers practice mindfulness and learned many other helpful skills for the new school year. Noble Middle School counselors Paige Turner and Megan Demonlina welcome students at Noble’s Open House. 13 Fall 2015 Rachel Freeman Elementary School of Engineering teachers participate in PBIS professional development before the start of the new school year. The Physical Therapy Department collaborated with the Transportation to instruct drivers and monitors in evacuation procedures. Driver Nancy Lent received a glowing letter of accolade from the grandparent of one of her students that she drives to and from Eaton. “Nancy is always very pleasant, professional, courteous and friendly…There was one instance in particular…” that she showed she “takes her job seriously as we all take our jobs of raising our children seriously.” The Friday afternoon before #nhcsB2S2015, dedicated middle school math teachers learn new strategies to help their students succeed. 15 The district said farewell to Lisa Burriss (center) at a small retirement party. Lisa was the district’s Lead Counselor/Social Worker. Fall 2015 F.Y.I. New Hanover County Schools Substitute System The phone number and web address has changed for the substitute system. Substitute system phone number 910-338-3597 Substitute system web address https://newhanover.eschoolsolutions.com How to register as a new employee (You can only register by phone) 1. Call the system phone number (910-338-3597). 2. When the system asks for your Access ID-enter your full social security number (unless it begins with any zeroes, drop all beginning zeroes). 3. When the system asks for your PIN number, you will enter your social security number again (drop all beginning zeroes). 4. The system will then prompt you to voice your name and then record a new six digit pin number. Have that number ready to enter. 5. Once you register, you can then create an absence using the phone or hang up and log on to the website to create an absence. Employees who have registered but have forgotten their PIN Number 1. Log on to the website https://newhanover.eschoolsolutions.com 2. Click the “Trouble Signing In” link. 3. The system will ask for your ID number (social security number-drop all beginning zeroes). 4. You will enter the security letters and then click submit. 5. The system will email your PIN number to you. If you do not get the email, please contact the Substitute helpdesk at 910254-4345. Jerri Romblad, former treasurer of Pine Valley, died on September 7, 2015, after a two year illness with brain cancer. Jerri worked for NHCS for 26 years.
