11th Annual Cheese and Wine Fundraiser: The Purple Tie Affair
The Manitoba Chapter’s 11th Annual Cheese and Wine event,
held March 10, 2016, continued our tradition of great fun,
food and wine. Live music, presented by Chapter volunteer
Léo Gosselin, playing the Chapman Grand Stick, welcomed
arriving guests. The nearly 150 guests, many attired in
purple, joined sponsors, supporters and Chapter staff and
volunteers at the Caboto Centre. This epicurean evening
featured sumptuous gourmet cheeses provided by local
artisan cheese-maker Bothwell Cheese Ltd., and fine wines Above: Marg MacDonell

Lindy Fraser Award 2015
If you know someone recently
diagnosed with Osteoporosis,
please tell her or him about our
Newly Diagnosed information
program. Sessions are held
monthly at the Chapter office in a
friendly setting. Participants are
provided with current, evidencebased information related to living
well with the disease, and,
perhaps most importantly, they
learn that they are not alone.
Osteoporosis Canada’s Scientific Advisory Consultants (SAC) and Osteoporosis
Canada (OC) have announced that Dr. Heather Frame is 2015’s Lindy Fraser Award
recipient. Dr. Frame has shown immeasurable dedication and determination in the
collaborative effort to achieve the common vision of Canada without osteoporotic
fractures. In addition to her outstanding service to OC, she has worked on a
number of publications and committees with SAC, and has extensively presented to
the medical field and at public forums.
Those desiring more in-depth
information about how to live well
with osteoporosis may join our
A graduate of the University of Manitoba, Dr. Frame is currently Vice-chair of OC’s
Board of Directors, sits on the Guidelines Committee, and is on the SAC Executive.
In addition to her outstanding contributions at the national level, Dr. Frame
practices family medicine in Winnipeg, is a physician at the Victoria Hospital’s
Osteoporosis Clinic, is a committee member for the Manitoba Bone Density
Program, volunteers with the Manitoba Chapter, and sits on the Manitoba
Chapter’s Advocacy Committee.
It is little wonder that Dr. Frame’s SAC colleagues have described her as “... a voice
for Primary Care and its role in the management of osteoporosis.”

detailed information, presented
by experts in nutrition, physical
fitness, medications/treatments and falls prevention. This 6-week program is held twice yearly (spring and
fall), and is scheduled for a different area of the city each season.
Those who have attended either of the Newly Diagnosed or Break Through sessions are eligible to join
OsteoConnections. This support group meets once per month in the Chapter office. Discussion topics are
chosen by the members, and the specially trained facilitators research Osteoporosis Canada materials to find
the most current, factual information available.
All of these programs are free to attend but pre-registration is required. For more information, just call the
Chapter office at 204-772-3498 or send an email request to manitoba@osteoporosis.ca

Backbone Award
Our volunteers are literally the backbone of the
Chapter. Without their time, talents and
commitment we could not function in our efforts
to bring the bone health message to the
community. Each year we celebrate and
recognize one outstanding volunteer with the
Backbone Award. The recipient is a person who
through her or his actions, efforts and ideas, has
made a significant impact to the success of
Manitoba Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada. Our
Backbone recipient this year is Andrea Bedard, a
person who demonstrates this ideal - in other
words she embodies the spirit of volunteerism.
Andrea has been an active member of OC since
2000. During this time she has done countless
presentations at the Chapter's public forums, for
small groups, for health care professionals, and
for new volunteers. If you have been at an event
with Andrea presenting you know that she has
everyone in the audience paying close attention
and physically participating in the presentation.
As well as doing presentations, Andrea has made
valuable contributions to our Executive and the
Education Committees and has participated in
our fundraising events.
Andrea does all this as the mother of three young girls and
working as an instructor at the University of Winnipeg in the
Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health in the areas of
physical health and wellness with a focus on aging. She has a
specific interest in physical exercise and osteoporosis and
exercise prescription and adherence for mature women. She
brings this perspective to the boards on which she sits, such as
the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults and the
Manitoba Fitness Council and has involved them in our events.
Andrea ensures that her students are knowledgeable about
osteoporosis, and that they understand the importance of
balance training in the prevention of falls.
Andrea’s enthusiasm,
positive
attitude,
sense of humour and
cheerfulness
make
her a delight to work
with
but
more
importantly, enable
her to engage the
public in learning
about osteoporosis
and the importance of
being "Too Fit to

Fracture".

Bones ‘n’ Beer Fundraiser
Friday, November 18th
Club Regent Event Centre
Our Bones ‘n’ Beer event is back! It’s a lighthearted title but a very serious intent: Our
goal is to heighten men’s awareness to pay
attention to their bone health and the
potential consequences of osteoporosis. Did
you know 1 in 5 men will get osteoporosis?
Did you know that men are less likely to
be assessed for osteoporosis or to receive
treatment for osteoporosis after breaking
a bone and more likely to die within a year of breaking a hip than women? These are a few of the startling
statistics about men and osteoporosis that we need to share.
This is a unique evening of craft beer, barbecue ribs and chicken, some well-known hockey personalities,
games, and a terrific silent auction. We encourage and invite everyone to wear their favourite hockey jersey
to this exciting event of “Great Food, Great Beer, for a Great Cause”. Contact the Chapter office for more
information or to buy tickets.
Coming this fall to a Safeway or Sobeys store near you
Stand Tall Manitoba is an interactive public awareness campaign that aims to raise awareness that height
loss can be an indicator of a spine fracture. Participants’ height is measured and they are given information
about the risk factors for osteoporosis and broken bones caused by osteoporosis, including loss of height.
Those who have lost height will be encouraged to see their healthcare provider and take a “Stand Tall” card
with their recorded height. Osteoporosis Canada recommends that if you have lost 2 cm (3/4”) or more in
height as measured by your healthcare provider, or 6 cm (2.5“) or more
overall from when you were a young adult, or you have a more rounded
Osteoporosis Canada
spine, you should talk to your doctor and insist on a spine x-ray.

As many as two million Canadians live with osteoporosis, a disease that
causes bones to lose their strength, become thin, brittle and prone to
fracture. Osteoporosis Canada works to educate, empower and support
these individuals. The Manitoba Chapter serves the community of
Winnipeg and surrounding areas to deliver vital education and patient
support programs for those living with osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis Canada is the only national registered charity serving
people who have, or are at risk for osteoporosis. The organization works
to educate, empower and support individuals and communities in the risk
